Climbing Plants Climbing plants, especially those with flamboyant flowers or fantastic foliage can transform a garden and offer a whole new planting opportunity, as your garden literally goes upwards and takes a vertical climb.

Supporting Cast A few climbers are self-clingers and don’t need a special support system when grown against a fence or wall; Virginia creeper and Hydrangea petiolaris for instance. But most need to have a proper support, and it pays to put this in place before you plant. For lighter weight climbers some trellis, perhaps prettily painted will do the trick, but for heavier climbers such as a vigorous clematis, or wisteria, you will need galvanised straining wires. Easy Access If you use trellis as a support on a wall, it can be attached to wooden battens which are fixed to the wall using rawl plugs. Use a series of hinges to attach one edge of the trellis to the batten, and a few hooks to allow you to raise or lower the trellis for when you need to maintain the wall. Planting Distance Climbers won’t thrive if they don’t receive enough water at the base. The ‘rain shadow’ created by the house roof and the drying effect of the wall’s foundations can make the soil close-by extremely dry so plant a minimum of 45cm (18in) away from the base of the wall and fork in plenty of well-rotted bulky organic matter before planting too. Train it well If the climber is quite small, it may need to be trained in the right direction. A short bamboo
cane or several for a multistemmed plant, can be angled from the base of the plant to the vertical surface, allowing you to tie in the stems and edge them towards the support. Once the climber has reached the wall, the enlarging network of stems may become congested if left to its own devices, so actively train the stems to grow in the direction you need them to.

Make watering them top-priority, especially for the first 18 months whilst they’re becoming established. Apply a good, bulky organic mulch to a depth of about 8cm (3in) or so all around the rooting area, but take care to avoid the mulch coming in to direct contact with the stems.
Arches, Arbours and Pergolas Climbers don’t just look good on house, garden and garage walls and fences, they can also be used to great effect over arches and pergolas or to clothe an arbour. You may need to install some supporting wires here too, so go for galvanised wires and sturdy vine-eyes as fixings. Choosing a scented climber or two will add to the charm of a cosy arbour or archway. Clever Combinations If the surface that you want to plant up is big enough, try to use climbers that flower in different seasons as, chosen carefully, the plants you use will increase the period for which the arch, pergola, arbour, wall or fence, looks its best. Bare Ankles Many climbers do have a habit of becoming a bit bare at the base, especially after they’ve been in place for a few years. Try some seasonal bedding plants around the base, or plant a small and attractive shrub a little further away to hide the bare stems. 5 Titanic Connections
1. Liverpool - Born in Liverpool in 1887, Frederick Fleet was one of two lookouts in the crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-nest of the Titanic when she hit the iceberg. Like all six lookouts, Fleet survived the disaster but tragically took his own life following the death of his wife in 1965. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Southampton. 2. Broughty Ferry, Dundee - A last minute change to the Titanicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crew meant Dundee-born 2nd Officer David Blair lost his place on board at Southampton. As he left, Blair accidentally took the key to the crowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-nest locker with him, leaving the lookoutsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; binoculars locked inside. The key was later sold at auction for ÂŁ90,000. 3. Chorley, Lancashire - Born in Chorley in 1874, Commander Charles Lightoller was 2nd Officer on the Titanic and the highest-ranking officer to survive the disaster. He helped evacuate passengers on the port side of the ship, until he jumped overboard and climbed to safety on an upturned lifeboat. 4. Colne, Lancashire - Wallace Hartley was a violinist and leader of the orchestra on the Titanic. No member of the shipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s band survived the disaster. Hartleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body was not found until two weeks later; his funeral in his hometown of Colne near Burnley was attended by thousands of mourners. 5. Comber, Co Down - Comber-born Thomas Andrews Jr. was in charge of construction of the Titanic at Belfastâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Harland & Wolff shipyards. He took his place on its maiden voyage intending to note any problems with the ship future, but after the iceberg hit he was last seen alone in the shipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first class smoking room.

hokey pokey melon & raspberries serves 6, prep 10 mins, cook 10 mins for the hokey pokey: 18 x 28cm tin, or one with similar capacity, lightly greased with butter 200g caster sugar 5 tbsp golden syrup 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 orange-fleshed melon, cut in 6 wedges 2 tbsp honey 1 tsp water 150g raspberries Mix the sugar and syrup in a deep pan and cook over a gentle heat, without stirring, until the sugar has melted. Try not to let it bubble until the sugar grains have disappeared. Once completely melted, turn up the heat a little and simmer until you have an amber coloured caramel. Then turn off the heat and tip in the bicarb as quickly as you can. Beat in until it disappears
and the mixture foams. Scrape into the tin immediately (careful - itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hot!). It will carry on bubbling. Leave it and in about an hour, the hokey pokey will be hard and ready to crumble or snap into chunks. You can keep any leftovers in an airtight container afterwards. Mix the honey and 1 tsp water in a small bowl, then brush a little onto both sides of each slice of melon. Heat a griddle pan until very hot. Griddle the melon on each side for 30 secs. Serve with the raspberries, scattered with hokey pokey.

Keeping Minds Active, Staying Social & Aware, Challenging the Progression of Dementia
With over twenty years in Nursing and healthcare with training in dementia and associated issues, Zoe Thomas is starting a Cognitive Stimulation Therapy group locally. This group, for sufferers of mild to moderate dementia and Alzheimers disease, will address an ever increasing need in our communities, for affordable and effective therapy, delivered in a safe and social environment. CST has been proven by research to be at least, if not MORE effective than current drugs used in dementia, and is a cost effective method of delaying the progression of disease, preventing social exclusion and isolation and increasing mental acuity. ALL OF US at some point in our lives will be touched by dementia. Let's do something to take control and help those who are amongst the most vulnerable members of society achieve 34
a high quality of life. The hour long sessions will be held at the Health and Wellbeing Centre for Age UK, who will be offering it as part of their services to our community alongside their other services. The sessions are in a set format course of 14 weeks, and take place in the lovely, warm, bright, well equipped therapy room which has disabled access via a lift (above the Men in Sheds Workshop). A full assessment will be given beforehand, and records kept of members progress and participation. The sessions will be personalised for each member and carers are welcome to attend, or they can simply use the session to take a much needed break! A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield Academy meets regularly to discuss ideas, work together and support each other as writers with a view to putting together a whole school magazine. Our articles look at life from a sometimes refreshingly different perspective! This month, something a bit different by Tristan Staszko ….
Jon Mayhew goes to school Everyone probably knows of an author, for example JK Rowling or Charles Dickens. I’d be surprised if you didn’t know one, two or even more. Recently, at my school we had a visit from an author named Jon Mayhew. Mayhew normally writes supernatural-horror themed stories. He talked to the students about how to not tell a reader everything in a sentence, much like ‘A big slavering werewolf scratched at the window.’ – and to instead use more general, ‘cake-crumb trail’ like descriptions such as, ‘Something scratched at the window.’ This latter sentence is obviously much better as it’s generalised, and therefore more effective in drawing the reader in. Okay, let’s tell you more about Jon Mayhew. My very vague description was probably not enough and you may still not know who he is. It’s amazing that I can tell you what he said, while you have no idea who he is. Jon Mayhew has written four books up to now. His first book, ‘Mortlock’, was a best-seller which was highly promoted in schools; resulting in about ninety-six thousand books being sold. His other titles; ‘Deathmire’, ‘The Demon Collector’ and ‘The Bonehill Curse’ haven’t been as popular as ‘Mortlock’, but they still have similar amazing content. Mayhew has a variety of hobbies and interests. For instance, he has an obsession with chips and likes to play the Mandolin. He also likes running marathons, in the ‘hope of keeping the weight off’ from eating all those chips! The word ‘was’, disgusts Jon Mayhew. He hates it. He says that there is usually a more active, more interesting version. For instance, you could say, ‘It was raining,’ but this could be improved to a much better, more interesting version by changing it to, ‘The rain hammered down on the roof of the house’. Sometimes, there’s no alternative to it apart from some tediously annoying method. For instance, ‘She was not alone’. If you really wanted to get rid of that word ‘was’, it wouldn’t work as it just wouldn’t make sense. Jon hates the word ‘was’ so much, that after completing a first draft of a story, he goes through it changing any sentences that have ‘was’ in them into a better alternative, such as ‘It was dark and damp in the woods’ could be turned into ‘Darkness flooded the damp woods’. Hopefully that introduces Jon Mayhew, but he does have a website where you can see the most up-to-date news of what he’s done and news of any new releases he may have and see what he looks like. In the previous article in our occasional series about what goes on behind the doors of 250 Park Lane - or local solicitors Jobling Gowler - we looked at the importance of making Wills to protect your family and to ensure that your assets go to the right people. Wills are also very important in the context of Care Fee Planning - a subject often in the news and sometimes targeted by unscrupulous companies who sell so called “solutions”.
Many people worry about losing their homes to pay for care in their old age. The payment of fees currently depends upon the amount of capital - meaning the total value of assets, including any home and other investments or cash holdings - a person has. If this can be minimised, more capital will be preserved for the next generation. Jobling Gowler can offer up to date advice on the applicable capital limits. Carefully drawn Wills containing Property Will Trusts can be used to significantly reduce the assessable value of the family home if a care home becomes a necessity. Anyone of any age can draw up a Property Will Trust, but they have to be part of a couple with a jointly owned property. Simply put, if the first to die within the couple leaves his or her interest in the family home on trust for the survivor (who can carry on living there) then the deceased's interest will not become part of the capital of the survivor. The survivor can even request that the family home be sold and a smaller property be purchased, still in trust. These Property Will Trusts are quite different from care home trust schemes (sometimes called estate preservation trusts) that you may see advertised to safeguard the home, to “keep it in the family”. Such schemes should be avoided: they are highly expensive and probably will not work. Will Trusts, however, give peace of mind to couples who have worked hard to build up the value of their assets and hope to leave their children with an inheritance. With the correct Will in place, the potential cost of care - and associated stress - can be minimised for the family.

Light Up Your Life Sensors, smartphones and serious savings
As we come into the winter, we start to need more light in our homes both day and night. There seemed little new in the lighting market for many years, but this has all changed now and from energy saving and long life to remote control, the technology has come out of the dark ages. The most obvious change in lighting is the end of incandescent bulbs and the arrival of low energy lighting. While early CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs were pretty horrible and couldn’t be dimmed, today’s models are far nicer and can even be bought with remote controls to dim and brighten them. The big news though, is the rise of LED. Light-emitting diodes aren’t just incredibly cheap to run; because they don’t get as hot as other bulbs, they are much more versatile. They’re already a common sight in car headlamps, and you can replace most of your house’s incandescent bulbs with LEDs for relatively little cash - including halogen downlighters, which were previously difficult and expensive to replace with LEDs.
When you combine LEDs with sensors, things start getting interesting. For around £12 you can get LED motion detectors, which light up stairs and other potential hazard areas and a LED in an external motion-sensing security light will give you the same peace of mind as before without the enormous energy drain. As technology gets smaller and cheaper, it also gets smarter. Wouldn’t it be great if your lighting linked in to your wireless network and could be controlled by your phone? That’s already available: Philips’ Hue lightbulbs do just that, enabling you to change both brightness and colours - so you might use a gently brightening yellow glow to wake you in the morning, or point at a photo to get the lighting to match its colours. It’ll be a while before such technology is every day affordable though - a starter pack will currently set you back £179 for one controller and three bulbs - but it’s still quite exciting. Another exciting idea is Wemo, Belkin’s wireless technology for home automation. You can already buy Wemo-enabled
plugs, and now you can buy Wemo-enabled light switches. Once again it isn’t cheap - expect to pay around £39.99 for a light switch and the same for a plug socket that you can use to control table lamps - but the technology is interesting: you can combine Wemo with the “If This Then That” web service, so for example you could add a motion detector to switch on the hall light when you open the front door or get the light switch to activate at sunset each evening. If you like the idea of motion sensors, light sensors or timers for your lighting but would rather not shell out for expensive smartphoneconnected kit, you don’t have to: a simple but effective motion and sound-sensing light switch will set you back less than £10, an electronic timer light switch will cost less than £10 and one with a built-in sensor will only cost a few pounds more. The smartphone-compatible hardware may have the wow factor, but lower-tech options won’t give your wallet the “ow” factor. By Gary Marshall
