War and Peace

In November we remember Armistice Day and it’s always a moving and contemplative time of the year. It’s particularly poignant now we’ve reached 2014, as we mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1 and remember those who gave their lives fighting in the trenches, and for the lost generation who never returned. Whether they’re based on fact or purely fiction, the stories and novels of WW1 still resonate today. Here are some of the most unforgettable.

Line of Fire: Diary of an Unknown Soldier Barroux (Author), Sarah Ardizzone (Translator) This remarkable and unusual book came from the chance discovery of a diary. French writer and illustrator Barroux found the journal of an unknown soldier in a rubbish heap on a Parisian street. Barroux’s simple and often stark pencil illustrations have brought the words of the soldier to life and given us a rare glimpse into the first two months of WW1.The diary begins just as France officially declares war, and the soldier’s often heartrending descriptions cover a broad spectrum of emotions: from the physical ache and rub of boots in the here and now, to the hope and longing for his family and for a safe passage through the conflict. What became of the soldier we will perhaps never know, but here we have a rare glimpse into a moment and a life, in time. A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway Based on his own experiences of the First World War, volunteering for the ambulance service in Italy, A Farewell to Arms is a love story between Frederic Henry (a Lieutenant serving in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army) and a nurse called Catherine Barkley. Set against a brutal and bloody backdrop, the novel is full of moments of

sheer romanticism and passion. Hemingway’s descriptions of war are truly unforgettable and the themes of love and death make for a very dramatic read.

This powerful story has become both an emotive stage show in the West End and a Hollywood blockbuster.

All Quiet on the Western Front Erich Maria Remarque A group of young, idealistic and gung-ho teenagers are excited and fired-up by their teacher, eager to enlist to fight in the war. What follows is the horrific realisation of what conflict really is, and the terrors of life in the trenches are soon revealed. Paul Baumer was one of those students for whom the war was at first an adventure. The young group of classmates fall apart after the first bombardment, leaving the survivors languishing in a hell of their own choosing. Paul vows to keep on living and to fight against a war that pits young men against others of the same generation.

Regeneration - Pat Barker Pat Barker’s novel was inspired by her grandfather’s own experiences during World War 1 and a lot of the characters are based on the accounts of individuals who were treated for ‘shell-shock’ and post-traumatic stress disorder (although it wasn’t recognised as such at the time) at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh. The title refers to the research carried out by psychologist W.H.R. Rivers into nerve regeneration after mental and emotional trauma, and explores the medical practices and treatments of the time. The story centres on an English officer who is sent to a military hospital after refusing to continue to fight in the war.

War Horse - Michael Morpurgo From the pen of acclaimed children’s author, Michael Morpurgo, comes a story that has captivated kids and adults alike. Joey is a beautiful young foal who is sold to the army and quickly finds himself charging into battle as the war rages in France. Told through Joey’s eyes, this is a powerful story about friendship, humility and humanity. Joey battles to stay alive and never lets go of his dream of returning home to his original owner, Albert and the farm life he left behind.

The Guns of August - Barbara W. Tuchman The thirty days leading up to the start of World War One have been brought to life in Tuchman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It focuses on why the war broke out, who was involved and why it wasn’t prevented. Her attention to detail is incredible and as those last few weeks spill out in front of us, you can almost feel as though you are reliving it, one hundred years on. It makes for incredibly powerful and thought-provoking reading.

Italian Lamb Shanks Serves 4

Ready in 2½ hours Lamb shanks are perfect for long slow cooking as they become meltingly tender and the meat just falls off the bone. Here they are braised with all the flavours of Italy – red wine, smoked cured bacon and tomatoes. Serve with creamy mash or boiled ribbon pasta such as tagliatelle or pappardelle.

Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C fan/gas 3. Season the lamb shanks with freshly ground black pepper. Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the lamb shanks over a high heat for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently. Transfer to a shallow casserole dish.

Ingredients: •

4 small lamb shanks

2 tbsp olive oil

350g shallots, peeled

2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped

150g cubed pancetta (Italian dry cured bacon)

300ml red wine

400g can chopped tomatoes

2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree

2 sprigs fresh rosemary, plus extra sprigs to garnish

5ml (1tsp) sugar

Creamy mashed potato, to serve

Add the shallots, garlic and pancetta to the frying pan and cook over a medium heat for 6-7 minutes until lightly browned. Pour in the red wine and bring to the boil. Add the tomatoes, sun-dried tomato puree, rosemary sprigs and sugar and pour over the lamb. Cover the casserole and cook in the preheated oven for about 2 hours, or until the lamb shanks are very tender and the sauce has thickened slightly. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve with creamy mashed potato and garnished with fresh rosemary.

TIP

Why not double up the quantities and freeze away half for another day? Allow to cool completely then transfer to a freezer-proof container. Freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat gently on the hob for 2025 minutes until piping hot.

Local People - A Teenage Perspective ‌...

A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield Academy meets regularly to discuss ideas, work together and support each other as writers. Our articles look at life from a sometimes refreshingly different perspective! This month, a piece by James Whyte on his favourite hobby ...

HOOKED ON FISHING Many people in the past have asked me why I am mad enough to sit out in the rain, or the cold, and fish. I reply, “For the thrill of that one fish that comes along when you only have two minutes of fishing left and then you just keep on going. My personal best is a ten pound mirror carp, caught at Goose Green Fisheries, Wilmslow. To put this into perspective, carp can be up to hundreds of pounds in weight, but I was pretty pleased with my own catch. As a hobby it is not that expensive either. I have located a complete beginner’s set for sixteen pounds which contains a rod, reel and tackle. All you need is a free day. I only have the one rod and it works great. I have only had it since Christmas but I have already used it so much. In the summer holidays I went fishing at least twice every week. I am not trying to force people into fishing but may I suggest you give it a go, because come on, who wouldn’t want a day on their own, doing what you want - catching fish? I got into fishing through my granddad. One year I was given a fishing set and then the next time my granddad went up to the canal I went with him and I was addicted. Many people think fishing is really boring but they obviously don’t know fishing like I do, in my opinion you can’t get a better sport. I mean you are on your own for a whole day or, if not on your own, hopefully with somebody you know and who you can have a laugh with. I also go fishing in Gawsworth. Where I go in Gawsworth is great, there are four pools and each of them is very spacious, so even on a busy day you can still fish relatively peacefully. Another way to fish is to go kayak fishing, this is where you paddle out to sea, or out on the pool you wish to fish, and cast your line(s). This method is slightly harder as you are in a small space but one advantage is that you can get to places you can’t get to from the bank. As I said earlier, it doesn’t cost a lot for a basic set of tackle, or go along with someone else who does fish to try it; if you don’t like it it’s not cost you anything. If you are interested in fishing you will have to find out about license terms and conditions which you can locate on the internet. Yes, believe it or not, you do in fact need a license to fish, however, even with a license some places are privately owned and do not allow you to fish, so make sure you check before you fish. Who knows you might end up hooked on fishing! See you there.

James’ favourite hobby is fishing, however when he isn’t doing this you can find him playing football or golf, or gaming on his PlayStation 3. 7R DGYHUWLVH ZLWK XV MXVW FDOO

After many a year of doing the job, Susan Kerby-Skinner decided it was time to get qualified! Not only did she do that, but she also went on to get an accountancy qualification and then a degree in education, eventually setting up her own training centre in Macclesfield some three years ago! And like a good accountant, she paid attention to the numbers to increase her success rate. She only ever takes in 10 learners at any one time to study for accountancy qualifications and finds it far more beneficial to teach in small groups. Susan believes that the teacher can respond more proactively to a small group and the less confident learners do not feel intimidated by a large group. It can also offer one-to-one tuition as required. Classes are organised on a flexible basis and can start as and when required throughout the year. It really does work around the group in question, not the other way around. As a result, SKS Accountancy Training Academy boasts excellent results at all levels. Apprenticeships can be offered for over 16s if learners meet the criteria or learner-loans (over 24) if they don’t. Courses can also be paid for privately. Susan believes that these qualifications are indispensible because people will always need accountants!

Then why not try

Macclesfield Conservative Club?

Now before you all recoil in horror thinking you might have to sign some eternal pledge to David Cameron, you won’t, because although the Conservative Club is a members club, you don’t have to be a Conservative to be one!! Visitors or guests are also welcome and all social functions are non political! Now that that small issue has been cleared up, what else is on offer at the Conservative Club, which is to be found on Westbank Road, just off Prestbury Road and adjacent to the Crematorium! Well, for a start, there is live entertainment every Saturday night and bingo every Wednesday evening. Apart from Christmas Eve and New Years Eve when the events are ticket only, any other Saturday night, you can just turn up. It’s only £3.50 for members and £4.50 per person for non-members. Talking of New Year’s Eve, there is always a Grand Buffet so watch out for details in the next issue of Local People! Various fund raisers are held for charity (we recently held a quiz to raise funds for the Rossendale Trust) and we support the East Cheshire Hospice. If bingo or dancing doesn’t float your boat, we have three snooker tables and are a member of the local snooker league. The club is available to hire for funerals, christenings and birthday parties. We have two function rooms which are ideal for seminars and include a screen for presentations. Plenty of free parking! Catering can be provided with a DJ or an entertainer if you wish. Finally, we run a Car Boot Sale on the second Sunday of every month and we will be having an indoor table top sale on 14th December (£10 per table), so please book your table early. So you can see, not just an empty shell of a building but a whole community with lots going on to appeal to everyone. We would like to invite you to get involved or to use the building to its full capacity. If you would like any further information at all, please just telephone Angela on 01625 422150 or Jane on 01625 420948.

The club was even recently used as a base for the filming of The Messenger, due for release early next year. Robert Sheehan, left with secretary Jane Owen, is one of the stars. Most of the committee in fact were recruited as extras for the film which is about a little boy who can see dead people. Who would have thought that the vicar in the photo to the right is, in fact, one of our very own snooker players!! Even our sandwiches became stars for the day!!

The Batt Man Returns! Batteries are being asked to do more than ever before. Years ago when a car was switched off, it was switched off. Today a whole range of electronic systems will be draining the battery whilst the vehicle is idle. Meanwhile, average mileage is actually falling, meaning less opportunity for recharging. Add into that the issues caused by cold weather and you know you will be seeing a lot of dead batteries when winter comes. This is bad news for motorists! The high power demands of modern vehicles and the drain from tracking devices and alarms means that the battery can potentially become flat in a matter of days if the vehicle sits idle. A number of factors could cause a vehicle’s battery to drain completely whilst in your care: it could be the amount of time the vehicle has been off the road or it could be the lack of regular battery maintenance – did you know that a battery can discharge by 0.1V per month (and possibly even more) if the vehicle is left outside in cold weather?

$'9(57,6,1* )($785(

Stewart Thompson (Batt Man!) of Thompsons of Macclesfield Ltd says, “our research has identified that 1 in 4 vehicles arriving at our shop for the free battery test have simply a flat battery. This can be remedied in two ways - the purchase of a suitable charger or having the battery charged at the store whilst a loan battery is made available to the customer. A mobile battery service is available for callout. Remember, if the battery is flat, only a charge from a charger will recover the battery, driving the car any distance will not! If a battery, once charged and tested, proves faulty then a new battery will be supplied and if required fitted to the vehicle. Varta batteries are the choice battery for more car manufacturers than any other. From the tiny home alarm battery (held in left hand), to an HGV battery.

Thompsons will be here for the Local People reader ‌..

Planting Trees and Shrubs by Pippa Greenwood This is a great time of year to get planting – the soil is still holding a bit of warmth from the late summer and is now more moist and provides good conditions for roots to develop, spread and establish. Furthermore trees, shrubs and woody climbers in particular are often a very good buy at this time of year. A good planting hole or pit is essential, and you should ensure that it is at least several inches larger than the current spread of the roots of the tree or shrub that you are about to plant. For years the advice has been that plenty of bulky organic matter should be incorporated in to the hole and the mixture with which you back fill it. Investigations now suggest that this may not necessarily be ideal: make the planting hole too ‘cosy’ and the tree’s roots may be inclined to stay in the hole. In a heavy clay soil a planting hole full of compost may also end up acting as a sump, so when the soil is wet the compost draws more moisture in to the hole, resulting in waterlogged roots. All very logical, but then I

would also suggest that if you garden on a very sandy, poor soil, a well-prepared planting pit which includes bulky organic matter such as garden compost will help to reduce the risk of drying out. Similarly, provided the organic matter is incorporated over a good enough sized area on a heavy soil, I think it does help to improve aeration and drainage around tree roots, especially if you incorporate some grit too. Well-rotted manure, garden compost and proprietary bagged compost are all useful in planting holes and if it is largely an improvement in soil texture which you are after, then home-made leafmould is great too. Next, to tease or not to tease the roots? I’m a teaser every time, having seen thousands of trees fail because their pot-bound roots never moved out in to the soil properly, if at all. Planting depth is important too, so do make sure that you cover the roots, and only the roots, with soil. Even the compost level in the pot is often too deep, so start from scratch if necessary. Laying a straight cane over the top of

the planting hole will help you to gauge the correct depth more easily. Then of course there is staking. I suggest only doing this with large trees, apples on very dwarfing rootstocks or if the site is extremely windy as a tree will get tougher and more resilient if given a chance to move around slightly and so form a strong trunk. If you do stake, short stakes at an angle are now regarded as best, and do use a good quality tree tie, properly fitted so that the tree’s bark is not chaffed. Finally, remember that aftercare is essential, regular thorough waterings will be needed during dry weather, especially for the first couple of years after planting. If you don’t get the aftercare right, the plant and all that time and effort can easily be lost. The Best Christmas Gadgets For Him

Buying gadgets can be tricky: if you’re buying for a grown-up there’s a very good chance that they’ve already bought the gadgets they want. But don’t despair, because it turns out that there are lots of gadgetrelated gifts you can buy for the man who has everything. A good place to start is with a case. You can spend hundreds if you want something from a name designer, but firms such as Tuff-Luv make really nice vintage leather Kindle cases for around £40. And of course you can get leather cases for other devices such as laptops and tablets too. If he hasn’t already got a tablet, there are plenty of alternatives to the all-conquering iPad and iPad Mini. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD (£89) is good for ebooks and movies, and a range of affordable Windows 8 tablets have been launched by the likes of Asus, Acer and Toshiba, all below £200. If he fancies himself as the next Jamie Oliver, Belkin’s Chef Stand and Wand (£29) is a smart gift idea. It’s a tablet stand designed specifically for the kitchen, enabling him to see the recipe (or the tutorial videos if he’s using cooking apps or YouTube) without getting it covered in food. If he’s more of

an outdoor cooking type, iGrill’s range of smartphone-connected thermometers (from around £34.99) give him a new toy to play with while he’s burning burgers. One of the more unusual new gadgets we’ve seen is the PlayBulb, a bluetooth speaker that’s also an LED light bulb. The £59 device is controlled via an iPhone and Android app that enables you play music and, er, turn the light on and off. For sporty types there are stacks of gadget gifts, such as the Fitbit Flex activity tracker (£75), the Zepp motion sensor for tennis players (£129), Garmin’s Forerunner GPS watches (£89) and the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watch (£149). If you really want to delight a gadget fan, this year’s hot technology is the smartwatch - of which LG’s G Watch R is one of the nicest. The price hadn’t been announced as we went to press but the Androidcompatible smartwatch is likely to be keenly priced - not least because Apple has its own smartwatch, which is likely to be a big seller this Christmas. If he’s already shelled out for a smart watch, how about a drone? Parrot’s AR.Drone 2.0 (£224) is a smartphone-

controlled quadricopter, a flying drone that can stream high definition video back to the owner’s phone or tablet. There are drones to suit all budgets, from the £36 Quadricopter X4 to drones costing more than £600. Many bigger drones are designed to carry GoPro cameras, which are small high definition cameras that can be attached to almost anything. Our current favourite video, a YouTube hit, was made by strapping a GoPro to a dog’s collar and then letting it sprint down to the beach for a swim, but we’ve seen GoPros strapped to bike helmets, to remote controlled cars and even to musical instruments. Expect to pay from around £199. You don’t have to spend lots of money for a great gadget gift, though. The excellent Aeropress coffee maker produces brews that rival the world’s most expensive coffee machines, and you can pick one up - brand new - for around £25. Images left to right: iGrill Smart Thermometer; Mipow Playbulb Bluetooth speaker; LG Watch R; GoPro Hero 3 action camera
