“If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you always got …” So why not take a leap into the unknown … if your target market is concentrated in Macclesfield, Tytherington and the surrounding villages, why not try advertising in We’ve been publishing for nearly 9 years now …. By a local person for local people …. 23,000 copies are printed of each colourful little issue … Of these, 22,500 are delivered directly through doors .. by our own team. Water, Water, Everywhere by Pippa Greenwood

A water-feature adds magic to any garden. The sound of tinkling water and the movement of light on its surface can be just the finishing touch you need either for a patio or for a much larger garden. There’s a plentiful choice of water-features of all shapes, styles, and sizes; but before you commit yourself, what are the main points to bear in mind? First, position. For moving water, your feature will use an electric pump, so there has to be a power-point nearby – something often overlooked. Do you want an eye-catching centrepiece for a formal garden, or just the music of running water as the soundtrack to your alfresco Sunday lunch? In either case, you need to consider carefully the appropriate position. Water-features can turn bright green in summer due to the build-up of algae. You can go a long way towards preventing this by positioning them away from direct sunlight. Make sure they’re well away from deciduous trees, too, as falling leaves will clog everything up. For smaller spaces you’re best off with a self-contained feature. There are lots of lovely ones available such as terracotta or glazed pot stacks with the water continuously

pumped from one container to another, so you’ll only need to top it up in the hottest weather. Spouts and fountains are great fun. A spitting fish, frog, or gargoyle adds a touch of art – or humour – while oxygenating a pool, reducing algae and keeping the pond-life happy. If you want moving water but perhaps have toddlers, a millstone with a low, centrallypositioned jet is both beautiful and safe. Plants are integral to any pond. Surface-floating plants such as waterlilies not only look gorgeous but their leaves also shade the water – again, reducing algae. Waterlilies need still water, so are best avoided if you have a fountain; but a single spitting feature at one end of the pool shouldn’t create too much turbulence. Plants around the edges of pools and ponds are called marginals and do best in shallower water or boggy ground. Use plenty: they look gorgeous, they hide the liner and they’re a haven for wildlife. Marginals to consider include yellow-flowered marsh marigold (caltha palustris); white-flowered bog arum (calla palustris); miniature reed-mace (typha minima); pale blue water forget-me-not (myosotis scorpioides); and purplebloomed water and bog iris

(eg iris laevigata). You’ll need about two plants per metre. For a more formal look choose shapely rushes or ferns. Water-features attract wildlife, and in summer you might be visited by dragonflies or mayflies. Birds may also come to drink and bathe. And even a small pond needs a safe exit-route in case hedgehogs pop by for a drink and tumble in. A shallow beach of pebbles should do the trick. If your feature has a sizeable surface, net it in the autumn to catch falling leaves. Garden netting stretched taut is ideal. Remove it as necessary to tip off the leaves. Left in the water they’ll both clog the pumps and produce methane, which is toxic. In winter, don’t let the waterfeature freeze up. If extreme cold is forecast smaller features are best emptied, and the pump cleaned and stored in the shed. Fish need an ice-free area on the surface or they’ll be killed by methane building up under the ice. Floating a football on the surface helps. If you haven’t yet seen this Aladdin’s cave of the terracotta pot world, then you need to pay a visit! From the outside, tucked away behind the Jolly Sailor off Sunderland St, it looks unassuming enough but go inside and you will marvel at the fantastic array and choice of terracotta pots and zinc planters. Over 50 designs, all shapes, all sizes - but what is really good, all at fantastic wholesale prices! The shop is the brainchild of local man, Gary Henshaw, and started trading here last October. It opens up three days a week at the moment, including Sundays, and has already built up a good clientele who come back for pot after pot as they recognise good quality at an incredible price! Even better, not only can you buy the pots but Gary and his wife will also plant them up for you if you wish. The plants are provided by The Macclesfield Community Garden Centre in West Park (also worth a visit when looking for your summer bedding stock!) and over the last few months, Gary has built up an excellent relationship with the little garden centre in the park, culminating in him donating 1,000 beautiful little glazed pots to them which they are now selling, complete with a candle, to raise funds to keep their own enterprise going. And during the month of May, not only will you get more than a bargain anyway when you visit, but Gary will be giving away one of his small glazed pots with every sale (whilst stocks last). Take a little detour off the beaten track and go a bit potty ‌. you will be amazed!

Moroccan Stuffed Loin Of Pork Serves 6

Ready in approx 3 hours

This roast pork is full of flavour and the spiced fruit and nut rice stuffing makes a change from the usual sage and onion. For really crispy crackling, the pork rind needs to be finely scored right through to the layer of fat underneath– ask your butcher to do this for you.

Ingredients: •

1 tbsp olive oil

1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped

2 tsp each ground coriander and ground cumin

40g ready-to-eat dried apricots, finely chopped

25g pine nuts

25g sultanas

100g cold cooked basmati rice

1 tbsp beaten egg

1.5kg joint boned and rolled loin of pork with skin scored

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in half the ground coriander and cumin and cook for 1 minute. Add the apricots, pine nuts, sultanas and cook rice and fry for 2-3 minutes until piping hot. Leave to cool completely then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Preheat the oven to 220C/ fan 200C/gas mark 7. Unroll the pork loin and spoon the cold stuffing down the centre. Re-roll the pork to enclose the filling and secure tightly with fine string at intervals. Mix together the rest of the ground coriander and cumin and rub into the scored skin. Weigh the stuffed joint then place it in a roasting tin. Roast for 30 minutes then reduce the oven temperature to 190C/fan 170C/ gas mark 5 and roast for a further 35 minutes per 450g. Cover loosely with foil towards the end of the cooking time if the cracking starts to overcook. Remove from the oven and cover with foil. Leave in a warm place for 20-30 minutes to allow the meat to rest before carving.

TIP To make a delicious gravy, pour off any excess fat from the roasting tin just leaving a little fat and the meat juices in the base. Heat the pan juices on the hob until sizzling. Stir in 1 tbsp flour and cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in 400ml apple juice or cider and 2 tsp Dijon mustard, scraping up any sediment from the base of the roasting tin. Bring to the boil then simmer, stirring all the time, until reduced and thickened. Season to taste then pour into a warmed jug or gravy boat.

Local People - A Teenage Perspective ‌...

A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield Academy meets regularly to discuss ideas, work together and support each other as writers. Our articles look at life from a sometimes refreshingly different perspective! This month, a brave and inspiring piece by Toby Harris.

Asking for help: is it a weakness? When I was diagnosed with a speech impediment in September 2013 my experiences at school changed drastically. However, rather than shy away from my problem I decided to take control and ask my teachers for support. As a result they offered me a helping hand in a number of ways ranging throughout various subjects. To start with the help originated from my school mentor. During one of our mentoring sessions we talked about my situation. This led to him getting in touch with my speech therapist and offering to send an email to all my teachers informing them of my stammer and how to deal with it. This email also allowed my teachers to take into account my stammer when considering my involvement in the lesson, and to understand that it might be holding me back from contributing enough. In response to this email many teachers spoke to me individually concerning my stammer. One of which was my form tutor and English teacher. After a discussion an agreement was made that I wasn’t going to be put on the spot in class and made to read out unless I felt I was ready. This took away the fear of being asked to read or answer questions. In addition, I approached my physics teacher as I believed that physics was a lesson I wasn’t contributing enough in due to my stammer. The talk we had included us making a plan; I would try to answer questions more and if I did begin to stammer then he would leave me to it. In addition, he would only ask me questions when my hand was up so he knew I was ready. Furthermore, my stammer arrived at a time when I wanted to apply to become a prefect at my school. During my initial interview for this position I spoke to the Deputy Head about whether my stammer would hinder my performance or chance of becoming a prefect. I was assured that this wouldn’t be an issue and that if any problem arose that it could be sorted. This set my mind at ease. Also, the confidence I gained from this experience led to me applying and becoming Deputy Head Boy. So, despite my stammer I have still been able to achieve my goals. I was determined that my stammer would not hold me back and that I would overcome it. However, sometimes we need help and support. My school provided me with help and support in many ways and continues to do so. So, if you have a problem, don’t be afraid to ask for help; this isn’t a sign of weakness. I have now been discharged from my speech therapy course but I needed a little help along the way.

Gary Lee, an independent financial adviser from Mulberry Financial in Macclesfield, explains how some recent pension changes could affect you.

$'9(57,6,1* )($785(

How do I cash in my pension? This is a question that has been asked many times since the recent Budget. There are now two sets of rules – the interim rules that have applied since 27 March 2014 and the rules that are due to be introduced from 6 April 2015. If you have already purchased an annuity with your pension, you will not be able to convert it back into cash. The rules as they stand now Are you aged 60 or over? If not, then I’m afraid you do not qualify you have another 12 months to wait (or until your 60th birthday if earlier). If you ARE 60 or over, then you have a couple of new ways to cash in your pension pots. The first way is to use the ‘small pots’ rules which allows people with small pension pots to cash them in. You can now do this up to 3 times with pension pots of up to £10,000 in value (making £30,000 in total). You can use this method even if you have other, larger pension pots elsewhere. The second is to use the ‘triviality rules’. To qualify, the total fund value of ALL of your pensions except the state pension must be under £30,000. This includes the value of pensions you have already drawn. If you qualify, then you can draw all the pensions as a lump sum less tax, although they must all be encashed within a 12 month period. Before ‘cashing in’ a pension pot, it is very important to consider the Income Tax implications. A quarter of the pension fund can be paid to you free of tax. The rest of the fund value is liable to Income Tax in the tax year that it is paid to you. If you are careful about the timing of your pension encashments, you can reduce the amount of tax due. The new rules from 6 April 2015 From 6 April 2015, the rules become simpler. It will be possible to fully encash ANY money purchase pension fund from age 55 onward. The tax treatment will be the same – 25% tax free, and the rest liable to Income Tax. I think that the new rules are an improvement, as they offer more flexibility for retirees – however, it is still a complex area so please take financial advice and think carefully before encashing any pensions.

How many times ‌..

do you walk past the building below without giving it a second thought? Do you know what it is? Or more to the point, how old it is?

Well, on 21st April 1813, Napoleon Bonaparte was still two years away from meeting his Waterloo on the day the foundation stone of Macclesfield Sunday School was laid in Roe Street. This year, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of its opening, an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and concerts has been taking place as this much-loved Grade II* listed building, now known as The Old Sunday School Heritage Centre, continues to serve as a focus for community activities in Macclesfield. To have reached this milestone at all represents a major achievement in itself. Described at one point as ‘Perhaps the finest Sunday school in England’, the building endured gradual decline in the years after WWII and deteriorated rapidly following the closure of the Sunday School in 1973. Fortunately, the granting of listed status recognised its architectural and historic value, and during the 1980s fund-raising efforts led by the Friends of Macclesfield Silk Heritage and The Macclesfield Sunday School Heritage Trust ensured its survival, restoration and refurbishment, culminating in its designation as the Heritage Centre in Macclesfield. The Macclesfield Sunday School Bicentenary Exhibition is now open until 7th September for all to visit within the Old Sunday School Heritage Centre Building. It explores the history of this fantastic building and to commemorate this event, pupils from Bollinbrook Primary School have produced creative responses to different periods in the Sunday School’s history, their work complementing the displays on show. Entry is free! Younger visitors can dress up and get a real taste of what it was like in Victorian times! The museum within The Heritage Centre explores not only the history of the building, but also the rich heritage of Macclesfield itself. The Centre also houses a fabulous shop, a cafĂŠ and Cinemac, a great venue to see the latest films and innovative live screenings of theatre and musical

performances from the likes of the National Theatre or the Opera House, Covent Garden. You may also like to take a look at www.windowofopportunity.org.uk As part of the unique occasion that is the 200th anniversary, the Old Sunday School Heritage Centre has created an interactive website based on the building’s design, incorporating its past, present and future. The concept centres around the Georgian windows. Visitors to the site can sponsor a windowpane (from as little as £10) and share their images and personal stories and memories, providing a special link with the history of the building and those who have used it, and pointing towards its use for future generations to enjoy. All money donated will then help towards the renovation and restoration of the Heritage Centre Georgian windows. Businesses can also get involved so do take a look! The The Old Sunday School in the Heritage Centre on Roe Street is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Of course, the Old Sunday School Heritage Centre is only one of four museums in the town which are now administered and managed by the Silk Heritage Trust. Through the maintenance and development of these Museums and their diverse collections, the Trust’s aim is to enhance awareness and interest in Macclesfield’s fascinating past amongst both local people and visitors alike. The Silk Museum is located on Park Lane and follows the journey of silk making, from cocoon to loom, history of Macclesfield silk, with fascinating displays and lots of exciting hands-on exhibits. Also open Monday to Saturday, 10am - 4pm (there is a entrance charge but children are free), it is well worth a visit (Local People always trys to include details of temporary exhibitions, events and children’s craft activities on our community pages). Next door to the Silk Museum, is Paradise Mill. Mill Here you can step back into the 1930s with a guided tour (see website) and see 26 restored Jacquard looms and watch as they weave their magic!! West Park Museum, Museum founded in 1898 by explorer Marianne Brocklehurst, contains Egyptian antiquities, fine arts including the work of Charles Tunnicliffe, and local historical objects. Finally, the Museum Director is thrilled to report that the Heritage Lottery Fund is going to fund two new projects. The first, Macclesfield Musical Heritage, Heritage will be run by the Northern Chamber Orchestra who enjoy a special relationship with the Centre. It will enable local school children to explore and learn the history of the old Sunday School through music and visual arts. The second project, Weaving Stories, Weaving Sounds will use film, sound, performance and exhibitions to open up the history of the looms at Paradise Mill and the town’s wider silk making heritage, in partnership with the Barnaby Festival. For more information on all the above visit www.silkmacclesfield.org.uk or pop in for a leaflet or two! Beginner’s Guide to Keeping Chickens

by Terry J Beebe

ventilation, enough perches and nest-boxes, and robust, secure construction – you don’t just want to keep the chickens in, you want to keep the foxes out! Having said that, you need to be able to move the henhouse from time to time as the soil on which it stands becomes fouled and soggy.

Keeping chickens has become one of Britain’s most popular pastimes. Everyone wants their own fresh eggs, but there’s more to it than that: chickens aren’t just productive; they’re also absorbing and friendly. They become pets. They’re relatively inexpensive to keep, but they do need a certain amount of daily maintenance to keep them in good condition. General Considerations Before you jump in, though, there are a few considerations you need to take into account. First – and this is really important! – check with your local authority in case there are restrictions on keeping livestock on your property.

Next, you need to decide how many birds you would like to keep. As a beginner you need to be sensible and start small. Depending on how much space you have, two to six is a good start and will supply enough eggs for the average family. Housing For such a small flock, a henhouse measuring 6ft by 4ft will provide all the space the birds need, as long as they have an outside run and the house is just for sleeping. It certainly won’t be large enough if you have to keep the birds confined. Buying a henhouse needs careful thought. A ready-built one can be expensive, but if you’re handy enough you can build your own. Whether readybuilt or home-made, it needs to be easy to access and maintain – that is, both chicken- and keeper-friendly. As well as access, check for good but not draughty

Suitable Breeds Chickens come in all shapes and sizes, which can be a bit confusing. But if you’re looking purely for egg-laying birds then commercial hybrids may be your best bet. Isa Brown, Black Rocks, White Star, Lomans, and Bluebell will all lay in good quantities for most of the year: an average of 300 eggs per bird isn’t out of the way. These hybrids are excellent as a starter bird, being both productive and quite easy to feed and keep. If you’d prefer something a little more special such as a pure breed chicken, though, then you need to track down a recognised breeder and get expert advice. There are some spectacular pure breeds that will still give you a good supply of eggs, although not as many as the hybrids. Look for breeds such as Rhode Island Red, Light Sussex, Barnavelder, Maran, and Wellsummer – all reasonably easy breeds, and not too flighty. Water A constant supply of clean, fresh water is absolutely central to your flock’s wellbeing. Chickens by and large are happy to drink out of a bucket, but a proper poultry font will keep their water cleaner and fresher.

Keep it outside the henhouse – if it’s left inside it can create damp which can easily lead to health problems – but it needs to be under cover to protect the water from wild bird droppings. And change the water every single day – something you need to remember at holiday times. Food A balanced feed is very important. It generally comes either in pellet or mash form and both should contain all the nutrients the birds need. You can, however, add extra vitamins and minerals and even cod liver oil to give them that extra boost. A small amount of wheat is quite good as an afternoon treat. General Maintenance Like all domestic animals, chickens need to be looked after. Cleanliness is essential to keep them disease-free and in good general health. Muck

out the henhouse regularly (another thing to remember when you’re jetting off on holiday!) and use dry, dust-free shavings for the bedding – not straw. Straw gets damp very quickly and then goes mouldy, which is guaranteed to cause respiratory infections. Outside The chicken run also needs to be kept as clean and fresh as possible. It is very important that the birds are not running on soiled and sour ground. Giving the chickens’ outdoor area a good digging over from time to time helps keep it fresh. Insects There’s quite a variety of fleas

and mites that will regard your chickens as free board and lodging, and some of them can cause loss of condition and even sickness. Control them with regular doses of goodquality powders and sprays. Chickens are beautiful and endlessly fascinating birds, and keeping them is a very rewarding pastime, with the fringe benefit of a steady supply of eggs. Why not give it a go?

Home Brewing Revival

Maybe it’s the rubbish they put on the telly these days. Maybe it’s because it’s expensive to go out. Who knows? One thing’s for sure, though: crafts and hobbies are making a big comeback. Not unnaturally, if you’re going to spend all your evenings and weekends honing your amateur expertise, you want the end result to be something that you can be proud of. And nothing beats beer really, and that’s why home brewing is enjoying a great revival. In days of yore, the main reason why people brewed their own beer was that they were either broke or miserly. Hobbyists who brewed their own would gloatingly tell you how little their beer had cost compared to the price of a pint in the pub. “You’d have to be mad to pay that much” they would cry, before forcing you to drink some of the stuff.

by Ted Bruning

And as soon as you’d managed to escape, guess where you’d head... However, these days it’s more to do with lifestyle, and home brewing guru Nigel Sadler puts it down to what he calls the Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall effect. Chelmsford-based Nigel runs a training company called Learn2brew and says he’s seen interest in home brewing skyrocket in recent years. “Crafts in general have a much wider appeal now than they used to,” he says. “Home brewing, home winemaking, and home cidermaking have really taken off. Partly it’s because there are now so many microbrewers that people have the chance to try many different beers and are getting generally more interested in the whole subject. Partly it’s because TV chefs and lifestyle presenters like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Heston Blumenthal are encouraging a have-a-go attitude.” To that combination has to be added the miracle ingredient of the modern age: the internet. Twenty years ago, Boots – the only national retailer of home brew supplies – reluctantly decided to pull out of the market. Then the mail-order firms, quickly followed by the independent shops, discovered internet trading. The whole craft took off again; and now Wilkinson, the 400-strong high street discount chain, has taken up where Boots left off. So now it’s easy to get start-

ed. And at entry level, it’s an easy craft to pursue: you don’t need anything more than a brewing bucket with a tight-fitting lid, a kettle, and a brewing kit comprising a packet of ready-hopped malt extract and a sachet of yeast. If you just follow the instructions you’re pretty much bound to get a more than passable beer for your efforts. But be warned! Once you’ve started it’s hard to stop. It’s perfectly possible to bump along at this most basic level for ever and be perfectly satisfied. But brewing is a seductive business, especially if you’re the type who enjoys browsing the market and sampling different beers. From brewing with kits you venture into trying your own recipes then before you know it you’ll have graduated from using malt extract into buying whole grains. It can be a sociable hobby, too. The local home brew shop (where there is one) tends to turn into a bit of a social centre, as specialist shops so often do; and in most areas there’s a home brewing club that holds troubleshooting sessions and competitions. There’s a UK Craft Brewing Association as well, which holds its own competition; so one day you might well find yourself being crowned national champion... and toasting your triumph in your own beer! • To find out if there’s a home brew shop nearby, visit www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk or www.homebrewshops.co.uk
