Take a look at the restaurant review on Page 6  that was a difficult evening’s work!! Barnaby Festival looms and organisers are steaming ahead now! So much going on  take a look at the brochure which will be dropping through your door with the magazine this month. We have been lucky enough to get Simon Brown’s iconic photo, which has become synonymous with Barnaby, on the front cover this month .. so thanks Simon! Take the magazine into Florentyna Dawn in the Grosvenor Centre to get 10% discount this month. If you haven’t been in, just take a look, there are some beautiful clothes and accessories. Gawsworth Hall concerts start up again this month  and what a choice they have! I went for the first time last year and really enjoyed the whole experience. Something else I found out recently, you can prebuy tickets for various places such as Alton Towers, Chester Zoo, etc, at the Visit Information Centre in the Town Hall, and you even get some good deals! As well as avoiding queues. You can also buy coach tickets, and all sorts of other goodies there so why not take a look. And  if you fancy some music, but not sure what to take in, have a look at our gigs listings on pages 28 and 29. It has proved to be a popular move so we will be developing this further in the weeks to come. In the meantime, offers, new customers  enjoy!     

The Blacksmiths Arms 5HVWDXUDQW 5HYLHZ E\ WKH (GLWRU

The Blacksmiths Arms on the Chelford Road Henbury has seen a few changes in the twenty years or so I have lived in Macclesfield. The last transformation, completed to a high standard in the Summer of 2010, seems to have hit the mark. It is now a charming, traditional pub with log fires in the winter, nooks and crannies and candles on the tables to create an atmospheric dining experience. At the rear, it has a large enclosed private garden which makes it not only child friendly but a pleasant place to stop off for a light bite, lunch or a cooling drink on a warm day (yes, I know .!!). There is plenty of on site parking. It is now owned and run by the Chef and Brewer chain and the regular menu offers a good choice and combination of traditional pub food (fish and chips, steak and ale pie, lasagne, home made burgers, grills, fish and vegetarian dishes), Sunday roasts, well priced children’s favourites through to more exotic flavours to tempt the palate venison pie, chorizo chicken, honey glazed roasted pork belly to name but a few. During the day, there are lighter bites, sandwiches, potatoes, etc, available and all at extremely competitive prices. In addition, there is a frequently changing ‘Specials Board’ offering half a dozen or so delicious dishes, cooked to order by the in house chefs and using fresh, seasonal produce.

In previous articles about what goes on behind the doors of 250 Park Lane – our local solicitors Jobling Gowler – we have had the opportunity to benefit from their advice across the range of legal services they offer. However, this month we are looking at the substantial support they give the arts and artists in our local community. When Jobling Gowler bought and refurbished South Park Surgery in 2007 they decided to retain the large reception area not only for their clients but also to display the work of local artists, thereby putting something back into the local cultural community. Since then, 5 or 6 exhibitions have been held each year by groups such as ArtsXtra, Cheshire Textiles, Needle Worker’s Guild and Macclesfield College. At least 3 times a year Jobling Gowler host charity evenings where the exhibiting artists agree to donate 25% of any sales to a local charity, with amongst others, East Cheshire Hospice, The Rossendale Trust and the Citizens Advice Bureau benefitting. Already in 2013, in excess of ÂŁ2,700 has been raised for local charities. Heather Jobling, Senior Partner, has been particularly active in furthering the corporate responsibility policy for Jobling Gowler, not least by her chairmanship of the East Cheshire Hospice Art Fair 2012, held in the Town Hall last October. Its record breaking turnover of over ÂŁ100,000 resulted in a donation to the Hospice of over ÂŁ40,000. Every 2 years Jobling Gowler also hold an art competition for artists with East Cheshire connections. Previous years have featured the themes of “Silkâ€? and “East Cheshire – its plains and peaksâ€?, with this year’s theme of “Labyrinthâ€? already attracting more entries than have been seen in previous years. The exhibition of finalists will open at 250 Park Lane on 3rd June with the winners announced at a special reception in July. The first prize is ÂŁ500 with category prizes of ÂŁ200. There will also be a People’s Choice category, with the winner receiving ÂŁ100 – so please take the opportunity to call in and vote. Contact Jobling Gowler if you are an art group and would like to exhibit, or if you would like to attend the art evenings. Alternatively, if you would just like to go along and look at the art in your own time, the offices are open every weekday between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm, or take a peek at 10

Falafel, Pepper & Goats’ Cheese Salad Serves 4

Ready in 30 minutes If you’re having veggie friends around for lunch or just fancy a meat-free supper for a change this colourful salad will fit the bill. Falafels are small Middle Eastern deep-fried patties made with cooked chick peas. You can buy them ready-made in most supermarkets or deli’s but they are really easy to make at home with just a can of chick peas and a few store cupboard ingredients. For an on-the-go salad pack into warmed pitta breads.

Ingredients:

• 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped • 4 tbsp freshly chopped parsley or coriander • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp chilli powder • 2 tbsp plain flour • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Oil for shallow frying • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 2 tbsp olive oil • 150g bag mixed salad leaves • Half a small iceberg lettuce, roughly shredded • 150g goats’ cheese, roughly crumbled

For the Dressing: • 6 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • tsp Dijon mustard

To make the falafel, place the chick peas, garlic, parsley or coriander, spices and flour in a food processor and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Process for about 1 minute until you have a fairly smooth mixture. Turn into a bowl then divide and shape the mixture into 12 small patties with clean wetted hands. Shallow fry the patties in hot oil for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Meanwhile, place the sliced peppers on a foil-lined grill pan and drizzle over the olive oil. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until tender and lightly charred in places. Toss together the salad leaves and shredded iceberg lettuce. Arrange on four plates with the grilled peppers. Halve the hot falafel then add to the salad and top with roughly crumbled goats’ cheese. To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a screw-topped jar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve immediately.

Tip Add a handful of fruity black or green olives to the salad or sprinkle with some lightly toasted pine nuts to give an extra Mediterranean flavour.

A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield Academy meets regularly to discuss ideas, work together and support each other as writers with a view to putting together a whole school magazine. Our articles look at life from a sometimes refreshingly different perspective! This month, a piece by James Fawkner Corbett on whether the internet is leading the music industry (which has made me feel very old!! Ed).

Back in 1962, Philips invented the Compact Cassette, the time the revolution of compact music began. Sony really took to this idea, the Walkman was considered to be one of the trendiest devices around back in the day. Music could be integrated into your life no mat ter where you were; whether you were doing an exercise regime, studying or simply walking down to the local shops, music could be taken with you like a second friend. The first portable music player! The extreme weight of the box like 60’s radio were out of people’s rucksacks and being replaced by the pocket sized Sony Walkman; the Walkman was flashy, new and in the day. The Walkman Cassette player’s flaws began to shine when the compact disc potential gleamed out to the British public: the change wasn’t sudden as the Walkman has only just been discontinued three years ago in 2010. The marvel of the pure sound quality and the compact factor meant the CD led the way, it still debuts new copies each week in our high street stores, but it has competition, the sales are fal ling, is it reaching the end of its life? My dispute is, do you choose the internet or does the compact CD retain the meaning of music? The compact disc has never failed us, we can rely on it to work flawlessly without any technological problem, it’s a great approachable way to music. Each time I went down to my local supermarket and grabbed a CD, I felt a real thrill! Just holding your favourite band’s single in your hands made you feel good.

It created a lot of social conversation as it was generally very interesting knowing what music people had bagged on their weekend. It was a special feeling, especially purchasing a sensational album for a gift too and you just don’t get that feeling from downloading music online. The thing is, in my opinion, CD’s feel old, like they have had their time in the hall of fame. For some time there have been programs to purchase music online such as iTunes. The idea of being able to download music which you can play on your computer, but also on an iPod which has the ability to store thousands of songs seems a music lover’s paradise. But, it doesn’t finish there, Spotify has become a real internet freeware must have, the ability of being able to stream music without having to purchase or download it has become over whelmingly popular. However, the modern way isn’t always the trendiest way! A retro sense has been re established this year; it feels quirky and great to bring back classic trends from the past. Vinyls are no exception. Many people have fallen in love with them once again. Part of the vinyl experience is the hum of the needle along the record and the occasional crackling sound; people love this poetic, artistic add on which is brought to music. They have more aesthetic appeal compared to CDs or tapes; the design is one of the main reasons people buy them, one of the reasons why collectors love them! Is the internet taking the experience and fun out of this industry?

Shopmobility Macclesfield

will be open during the big weekend of Barnaby (22 - 23rd June) in order to give disabled people access to all the excitement that the festival holds. Barnaby is a 13th century tradition that is open to anyone, and has something for everyone, from contemporary art and music to walks and talks. However, in the past it has been inaccessible for many disabled people. Shopmobility opening this year will allow even more people to participate in the activities who may not have been able to as easily before. It will be open from 9.30am until 4pm on Saturday 22nd June and 11am to 4pm on Sunday 23rd June. As ever, it is open to regular members, who will pay their regular fees, and guests, who can pay a one-off fee of £5 for a weekend pass, so they can enjoy their weekend with no other commitment. Shopmobility will also be opening more often, on Treacle Market Sundays (11am - 4pm) which falls on the last Sunday of every month, and on the second Saturday of every month (9.30am - 4pm). Bugs and Beasties by Pippa Greenwood

Bugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year? Aphids Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary. • Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide • Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues • Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. • Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning. • Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar

biological control. • Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer. • Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh. Woodlice Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures. Earwigs Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo

cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis. Mildew Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white floury deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability. Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often helps too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com where you can sign up for Pippa’s free newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh, Envirofleece and a hand-picked selection of garden products
