A Very Vintage Christmas It’s mid December and your newly-bought Christmas tree is standing naked in the corner of your living room. So it’s to the loft, garage or shed to dig out that battered old box of decorations. If your box is anything like mine, you’ll probably find a past-its-best fairy with drooping wings, some purple and silver baubles from the Millennium and two crushed crackers from last year’s Christmas lunch (couldn’t bear to throw them away) tangled together with swathes of tinsel, garlands, non-functioning fairy lights and springs of plastic holly. Most of my hoard is cheap, garish and ultimately disposable. But there’s one very special part of the collection that I will never throw away. It’s a treasured set of old-style, hand painted tree decorations, made out of wafer thin glass. Vintage tree ornaments are an evocative sight for those of us who were children in the 1950s and 60s: each year when I unwrap my collection it takes me back to a time when Christmas seemed truly magical and exciting. Although I understand the reasons why hanging delicate glass baubles on the Christmas tree – within grabbing distance of little hands - is no longer a good idea, it’s sad to think that such beautiful items are no longer readily available. The tradition of making glass tree decorations dates back to 17th century Bohemia (the modern day Czech Republic) and Germany. Today’s familiar ball shapes had their origins at a place called Lauscha in Germany, where legend has it they were first created when glass blowers competed to see who could blow the largest

sphere before the molten glass popped. Those that survived were kept by the glassmakers’ wives, swirled with silver nitrate and sold at local markets as magic talismans, offering protection and blessing during the holy season. In 1848 a picture of the young Queen Victoria’s Christmas tree, hung with decorations brought from her husband Prince Albert’s native Germany, was published in the Illustrated London News. This sparked a copycat craze throughout Europe and soon whole families in the town of Lauscha were employed to mass-produce decorations – the menfolk blowing the glass and the women and children painting and finishing the ornaments. Later that century, German immigrants brought the same passion for glass decorations to America. Thanks to entrepreneur Frank Woolworth - who bought millions for his popular chain stores - what began as a cottage industry in Lauscha became an international phenomenon. By the mid-20th century new molding techniques had sped up mass production and reduced the cost of manufacture. In addition to the more conventional round and oval shapes, there were decorations shaped like musical instruments, stars, lanterns, mushrooms, snowflakes, snowy cottages and little figures of Santa Claus. My favourite ones were the exotic birds with silky fibre glass tails that clipped onto your tree and trembled like real birds every time the branches moved. Nowadays most Christmas tree ornaments are made out of plastic, but if you do happen to find a Lauschan treasure lurking at the bottom of your decorations box, take good care of it. Vintage tree ornaments are becoming highly collectable and you can find sets on Ebay and other online auction sites for between £15 and £30. By Claudia Leaf

Seasonal Recipe These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.

Mini Christmas Cakes FoR The Cake • 250g butter, softened • 250g dark muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 350g plain flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp ground cloves • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 800g mixed dried fruit • 100g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and chopped • 100g chopped mixed nuts FoR The DeCoRaTion • 750g marzipan • icing sugar, for dusting • 4 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved • Mixed coloured glace cherries, walnut halves, Brazil nuts and chopped dried apricots

Makes 9 Ready in 4 hours (plus cooling)

A cause for concern. Everyone has at least one. Mine in particular is one of the most noticed problems of living in today’s world. Poverty. As Christmas approaches and our thoughts turn to what we want to receive, and surely most kids are busy circling the Xbox 360s and the Playstation 3s in the Argos catalogue by now, we should take a step back and consider those less fortunate than ourselves. 1.6 billion people, on average a quarter of today’s population, don’t live with electricity. Unbelievable, right? Think of a life like that. No hair straighteners, no T.V, no internet! You might think what has all this got to do with me? Well, here in Macclesfield poverty also exists. In a seemingly affluent area this may come as a shock, and like any town with pockets of poverty it is often the kids who suffer the most. It’s really disheartening to know that there are not as many smiley faces in my home town as I thought. Christmas often creates added financial stress to families on low incomes. Why? Christmas arrives when the freezing weather of winter is upon us and fuel bills rise. Families who are already struggling to cope with the cost of living really feel the pinch. Some people will have the feeling of warmth and comfort while others will struggle to stay warm. It’s horrible to think that people won’t be

having much of a merry Christmas due to a cold house. But, it’s not all doom and gloom. One reason I’m happy to live here is that people in Macclesfield are taking action to address poverty in our community. For example most local churches each Christmas ask us to put one extra toy in our basket when out shopping, for those less fortunate kids who are not given gifts because their parents can’t afford them. A doll, a game or a cuddly toy may seem like a small contribution but it can make a massive difference to a child. It’s really nice to imagine the smiley faces of the children unwrapping their gifts on Christmas morning. If I’m honest I do make a Christmas list and I do wonder if I’m going to get the latest Call of Duty game, or the right curling irons. But this year I am going to make a conscious effort to give a little bit back. It always feels nice to give something; nothing is more rewarding than that. It can be a donation of money: 5p or £500. Every penny counts. Just donate some money to any poverty charity this Christmas. Or it could be a gift or maybe your time. I leave you with that thought and Christmas wishes and a Happy New Year to you all.

Leading Law Firm Launches Professional Negligence Department Jobling Gowler Solicitors have established a specialist team in response to the increased number of professional negligence claims being made against other solicitors in relation to the under-settlement of personal and medical injury claims. A surprisingly high number of claims are settled for lower damages than they merit, often due to the mis-management of the case. For many years, Jobling Gowler has provided second opinions to clients who have had concerns about their current solicitor’s handling of their Personal Injury case. In many instances, Jobling Gowler have taken over the case and have gone on to achieve far greater settlement than initially had appeared possible. With changes in legislation coming into force from April 2013 restricting the fees that solicitors can earn, Jobling Gowler predicts that the trend in poor service leading to under-settlement is likely to increase. Commenting on this, Jobling Gowler Partner, Simon Gowler said: “Many personal injury firms pay for leads from insurance companies, meaning that they have to minimise the costs associated with dealing with a case. In many instances the person who handles the case may not be a qualified solicitor, may not have a full understanding of the medical evidence or legal principles involved and they are often not adequately supervised. As these large scale operations are centralised, face to face meetings with the client are very rare, and therefore the claims handler may have difficulty in understanding the full impact the accident has had on the injured person.â€? Jobling Gowler has never paid referral fees, contending that solicitors should attract clients on merit based on their experience and expertise in personal injury claims. With all claims being handled by qualified solicitors, the firm has been able to achieve some outstanding results for clients (see below) and generates 80% of its new business through personal recommendation. Simon added: “Our new Professional Negligence Department will pull together the expertise we have across the firm to assist clients who are looking for an expert second opinion on their injury claim to avoid undersettlement. Although nothing can be done to take away the trauma of an accident, using a dedicated and experienced professional negligence team, such as Jobling Gowler, will at least ensure that you achieve the best financial outcomeâ€? Should you require a free, no obligation, second opinion in respect of an on-going personal injury case, or require an opinion in respect of a case which you believe may not have been correctly handled and has led to a reduced settlement, please contact Jobling Gowler on 01625 614250. Recent Outcomes Mrs A was being encouraged to accept ÂŁ1,500 for her whiplash injury by panel solicitors. She was still experiencing pain in the middle of her back, which we realised was unusual. The client had a scan and saw a new suitably experienced consultant who diagnosed damage in the thoracic spine. Through this we were able to secure compensation of ÂŁ64,000. We recently settled a case for Mr R, with similar circumstances, where the offer on the table was ÂŁ1,700 for whiplash injuries. The client resisted the pressure to accept this, instructed Jobling Gowler and is now ÂŁ21,000 better off.

Beat The Bills How tech can reduce your energy usage After yet another winter of record-breaking energy prices it’s clear that the cost of lighting, heating and powering our homes isn’t going to drop any time soon - so it’s a smart idea to invest in energy saving technology to reduce the amount of energy we use. You’ve probably already double-glazed the windows, filled the cavity walls and insulated the roof, but there are still plenty of ways that technology can reduce your energy bills further. Some of the best ideas are the simplest ones, such as the Enviroplug (£9.99). As the name suggests it’s an environmentally friendly plug that’s been designed to switch off phone and gadget charges when the device is fully charged or no longer connected. Enviroplug reckons it can save you 13.14KWh of energy per year, equivalent to 76 hours of TV watching, per plug. Another simple idea is an automatic radiator bleeder (£13.99), an easy-to-fit device that ejects air from your radiators to keep them running at maximum efficiency. You can do the same job yourself with a £1 radiator key, of course, but air can easily build up without you noticing it.

Changing your light bulbs can reduce your bills too, even if you already use energy-saving CFL (Compact Fluorescent) bulbs. LED bulbs are improving in leaps and bounds, and a typical LED bulb will use half the energy of the equivalent CFL. To our eyes they’re better looking, too. Another good energy saver is the Standby Buster plug socket and its many imitators. It’s a remote control system that switches off devices completely instead of leaving them in standby mode. Expect to pay around £17.99 for three plug adapters or about £8 for a single plug socket. If you’re a tea or coffee drinker the Energy Savings Trust reckons you should change your kettle: its recommended product, the Wahl ECO Kettle, achieves energy savings of up to 60%. You fill it like a normal kettle but use the ECO control knob to tell the kettle how much water you need; it then only boils that amount. If you have computers at home, you may well be wasting energy there too: computers left running while you make a cup of tea or attend to a family crisis can consume surprisingly large amounts of energy: if you can see the screen saver, you’re paying for unnecessary

energy use. One of the most interesting solutions is the multi-award-winning Ecobutton Halo (£12.99), which plugs into a spare USB port and puts your PC into its lowest-energy standby mode with a single button press. It comes with software that tells you how much you’ve saved that week and since you installed the Ecobutton. Ecobutton reckons you can save around £50 per year with the device, although sadly it isn’t compatible with Apple machines. In addition to your computer, it’s worth looking at its accessories too: wireless mice and keyboards, games console controllers and other peripherals often use lots of batteries, and swapping Duracells for rechargeable ones can save you money as well as reduce your environmental impact. Even the biggest chargers are very cheap - Duracell’s CEF22UK is around £12, while the batteries themselves are relatively inexpensive too, with AAAs at around £6 for four and D-sized batteries weighing in at £3 apiece. You don’t need to recharge your batteries too many times before they start paying for themselves.

Christmas Tree Lights

There’s nothing that says ‘Christmas has arrived’ as much as a Christmas tree beautifully illuminated with lights. Some say that the tradition dates as far back as the 1600s when wealthy German families would decorate their trees with small candles held in place with pins or melted wax. Owing to the danger of fire however, the candles would only stay lit for several minutes at a time with home owners standing nervously by. Even after candle holders and lanterns became available, fires were common and insurance companies started refusing to pay claims. The solution was provided by a very wellknown name and its unveiling must be one

of the greatest publicity stunts of all time. In December 1880, in order to publicise his latest invention, Thomas Edison hung a string of electric lights around his laboratory in New Jersey. Passers-by were mesmerised by the beautiful display and associated it with yuletide celebrations. Two years later one of Edison’s inventors, Edward Johnson, lit a Christmas tree with 80 small bulbs and by 1900, Christmas displays with lights started appearing in department store windows. On Christmas Eve, 1923, President Coolidge lit the National Christmas Tree near the White House with 3,000 lights. A string of lights cost about $12 which put buying them way out of reach of ordinary American families. General Electric, who had purchased the rights to Edison’s bulbs, even released advertisements suggesting families rented them. It wasn’t until 1925 when the Sadacca family, who owned a novelty lighting business, started mass manufacturing Christmas lights, that they become affordable. Today you can take your pick of incandescent or LED lights. Either way, what a pleasure it is to light up your tree in these cold winter months.

Robert Blincoe - the story continues ‌... Back in the October issue of Local People, Dennis Whyte of the Macclesfield group of the Family History Society of Cheshire gave us some initial food for thought on the subject of whether a certain Mr Robert Blincoe, buried in Pott Shrigley church, was in fact the inspiration for Dickens’ ‘Oliver Twist’? Dennis writes ‌ “After the article on Robert Blincoe in the October edition of ‘Local people’, two readers contacted me with further information. The first had moved his business temporarily into Litton Mill where Robert Blincoe had been apprenticed from around 1805. The Mill is now residential apartments. The second reader lent me a copy of a book published in Manchester in 1832 about Robert Blincoe’s early years. The title is rather long but very descriptive: $ 0(02,5 RI

He never knew who his parents were and was unsure if Robert Blincoe was in fact his real name. He hated the confinement of the workhouse but his apprenticeship in 1799 to Lowdham Mill, Nottingham proved to be nothing short of slavery and brutality. Unfortunately his transfer to Litton Mill, Derbyshire after four years led to far worse treatment – near starvation, very long hours and beatings were the order of the day and many died. When his fourteen year apprenticeship finished Robert found work in several mills in the Manchester area, saving part of his wages so he could go into business himself. He married in 1819 and had three children. He came to live in Macclesfield with his daughter and son-in-law in the 1850s where he died in 1860. He showed remarkable courage to survive his ordeal and a strong determination to succeed and improve his life. In 1888 Robert Blincoe was remembered as a little man in height, his legs being very crooked, the result of his early life in a cotton mill. These memoirs are harrowing to read but give a real insight into conditions in many textile mills of the time. The publication of this book in 1832 leads one to believe that Charles Dickens could indeed have modelled Oliver Twist on the experiences of Robert Blincoe. The book was reprinted in 1977 and second-hand copies can be bought on the internet ´ Many thanks to Dennis and his colleagues It just shows how a story can develop once you start investigating. If you would like to speak to Dennis, contact him on 01625 617557 or Macclesfield@fhsc.org.uk. And thank you! 7R DGYHUWLVH ZLWK XV MXVW FDOO

Dear Diary...

Imagine 365 blank pages: a brand new year of opportunity stretching before you. 2013 will be full of ‘dear diary’ moments and to kick-start your new year’s resolutions of self-improvement and examination (until February at least) here are some of the best, and most amusing slants on, and windows into other characters’ lives.

Secret Diary of a Call Girl by Belle De Jour Publisher: Grand Central Publishing It’s a growing problem: graduate unemployment. What do you do when university loans and soaring rent become too much and you need to find a way to make ends meet? Belle hits on a new and rather unorthodox get-rich-quick-scheme that fits perfectly in with her London lifestyle. It’s not for the fainthearted but if it’s titillation you’re after then there are observations and shock events that will have you laughing your fishnets off.

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith Publisher: Vintage Classics. Cassandra Mortmain’s family is poor. They live in a castle that’s crumbling around them and this is her story, written while she’s sat ‘at the kitchen sink’. So begins the endearing and warming tale of the children, living under the burden of their novelist father’s writer’s block. Cassandra’s journal charts the change and disruption that breaks out when heirs to the family home come to claim it. Dream-like and highly memorable, it’s a diary to be treasured.

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 and by Sue Townsend The teenage Adrian Mole is unfailingly satirical, tremendously funny and completely loveable. This is one of the most memorable diaries ever and it’s oozing, like a giant zit, with teenage angst. Will he ever discover the delights that lie hidden under Pandora’s Janet Reager slip? Children will read this and both look forward to and dread adolescence in equal measures, whilst adults will be able to reminisce over first having a girl in their bedroom. I’d insist the door’s propped open if I were you.

Diary of a Nobody by George Grossmith, Weedon Grossmith. Publisher: Wordsworth Editions Limited Don’t let the fact that this book was first published in 1892 put you off. It may be a year and a half in the life of a lower-middle class Victorian clerk but there are so many parallels with modern life that you can’t fail to be touched by its humour. Fundamentally flawed by his own over-inflated sense of worth and his desire to climb the social ladder, Charles Pooter’s observations, wit and snobbery will have you laughing out loud.

Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding Publisher: Picador. With her constant caloriecounting, lusting after her bounder of a boss and remorse over binge-drinking sessions and social faux pas, how can we not love Bridget Jones? She’s become cemented as one of the great literary (or at least chick-literary) antiheroes. Enjoyed by singletons and ‘Smug Marrieds’ alike, we love Bridget Jones…just as she is. Diary by Chuck Palahniuk Publisher: Vintage Told in diary form and mainly through the eyes of hotel maid and self-confessed ‘white trash’ woman, Misty Mary Wilmot, this is a thoughtprovoking novel from the author of Fight Club. Misty was once a bohemian art student who met the wealthy and enigmatic Peter, so unlike the other students that she thought all her prayers had been answered. Now she lives in a world she doesn’t recognise and her husband lies comatose after a suicide attempt. This is for those of us in a period of self-reflection and examination. If it tells us anything it’s to be true to ourselves.
