Foundation helps donors to maximize charitable giving

W

hen it comes to donating financial resources—it’s personal. Donors often have individual motivations for choosing the recipients of their generosity, but there is one element that most donors have in common— they want their donations to be effective and impactful.

Tim and Christine Steigauf of White Bear Lake exemplify this aspiration. When they sold a business a few years ago and faced tax consequences, they wanted a smart charitable giving strategy.

The Steigaufs turned to the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota (CCF) to help them plan their philanthropy.

Expanding donors’ impact CCF helps donors create meaningful charitable giving plans that are tax-efficient and align with

Catholic values. Individuals and families create funds through the Foundation to support programs and organizations of their choosing. CCF ensures that donors can: Give Smart with a Catholic Heart.

As a community foundation, CCF increases the power of donations by investing them wisely and making them grow.

Tim says, “Working with CCF reminds me of the Gospel story where three workers are entrusted with their boss’s money. One squandered it, but two doubled their money because of good stewardship.” He adds with a laugh, “They probably had help from a group like CCF.” “Our mission is to support financially the spiritual, educational and social needs of our community,” says Anne Cullen Miller, president of CCF. “We are not the benefactor of donors’ generosity but rather a

conduit for it.” In other words, donors give through (not to) CCF. The Foundation stewards more than $530 million in assets and distributes nearly $18 million in grants to the community each year on behalf of its donors.

With CCF’s guidance, the Steigaufs established a donor advised fund to contribute to their favorite places, including the couple’s parish, Church of the Assumption in St. Paul; the University of Notre Dame; the Little Sisters of the Poor; and their Archdiocesan mission parish in San Félix, Venezuela.

The Steigaufs appreciate the simplicity of grantmaking. “CCF allows us the freedom and flexibility to support many causes,” says Christine.

“We determine where and when it’s distributed, and CCF vets these organizations to make sure they’re legitimate and aligned with our values.”

Being financially prudent While benefitting those in need is their primary focus, the Steigaufs want their giving plan to be fiscally sound.

“The tax advantages and the effectiveness of CCF’s management maximizes the amount we’re able to give,” Tim says. “As we got to know the staff, the process and the resources, our relationship grew, and we started to realize how effective the Foundation is at stewarding the funds in our account,” Tim says. “The people at CCF have a vocation to help us make the most of our donations.”

The Steigaufs believe that others may benefit from CCF, “depending on your financial situation, charitable goals and where you are on life’s path,” says Tim. He cites four situations where CCF may be particularly helpful.

“If you have an unusual influx of cash one year, assets with significant appreciation that you want to donate, a desire to support charitable causes after you die or just want to simplify your giving,” he says, “CCF is a must.”

For those considering CCF’s services, Steigaufs offer suggestions.

“You can’t predict the future, and you don’t want to overcommit and leave yourself short,” Tim says. “Getting started takes a little faith and a little caution. Our advice is to ease into it like we did. You don’t need to have all the money you’re ever going to donate on hand before you start.

Take any amount and get started.”

Establishing a family legacy Through charitable giving, the Steigaufs are passing on their deep-rooted values to their three daughters. “We’re showing our beliefs through our time, talent and treasure,” says Christine. “They see our faith in action.”

Christine and Tim attended St. Agnes High School. Christine graduated from St. Catherine University and taught school for 24 years at St. Pascal Regional Catholic School. Tim studied engineering at the University of Notre Dame, got his MBA from the University of St. Thomas and pursued a career as an engineer and business owner. Their daughters went to Hill-Murray School and two of them followed in their dad’s footsteps

to Notre Dame while the youngest is pursuing her degree and playing hockey at Quinnipiac University.

The Steigaufs say that, from young ages, their daughters wondered about the inequities of the world and learned that those who are capable must care for those who need help and support. “This is exactly what we’re doing with CCF: channeling our money to where it’s needed the most and will make the greatest difference,” says Tim. “CCF’s long-term planning assures us that our family can continue to support the causes we care about indefinitely,” Christine adds. “We want our donations to have the biggest impact possible.”

This year, we included an all write-in ballot, so our voters could easily make their top choices. Once voting closed, tabulators determined which businesses were the top three vote-getters.

What’s a finalist vs. a winner?

The top three vote-getters in each category become finalists and are announced in the spring on our website, and the top vote-getter is the winner and is announced in the summer on our website and in our magazine. Once votes are tabulated, our editorial team factchecks the address and contact information for each finalist. If a finalist is no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., the next highest votegetter(s) moves up to become a finalist.

Can a business or organization be a finalist if it’s located outside of the magazine’s coverage area?

White Bear Lake is a sea of creatives. In this artistic community, two of my favorite artists are Allen Christian and Mary Jane LaVigne.

Known around town as Mr. and Mrs. Lucky, this talented couple even has their own museum, House of Balls, in Minneapolis. If you’ve seen a giant pedal bear in a parade, decorated Art Cars around town, a Roaring ’20s band on a boat with a pyramid of water skiers beside it, a pontoon bear on the lake or fireworks shooting out of metal hats, chances are, you’ve seen them in action.

SUMMERTIME IS HERE AT LAST.

And though this season brings the gorgeous warm days we’ve been waiting for, so too will come the inevitable calls of “I’m bored!” from the littlest members of your family. But don’t fret! To help you through the summer of 2022, we’ve compiled our list of the top 22 family-friendly activities in the communities around White Bear Lake.

Whether you check off these items as a bucket list or use them as a launching point for other adventures, we hope this helps your family make the most out of this Minnesota summer.

4. Catch a fish on one of the area’s many lakes. Don’t have a boat? Pontoon rentals are available from Pontoons on Bald Eagle and Tally’s Dockside.

A Pathway to a Greener Community Area sustainability group works toward a safer, eco-friendly future.

AS SUMMER BEGINS on the shores

of White Bear Lake, the beauty of this land comes into full view. Lush green trees stretch over winding trails. Birds sing and swoop over local beaches. It has been this way for as long as residents remember, and the Mahtomedi Area Green Initiative (MAGI) is working to keep it that way.

MAGI’s story began 15 years ago on the

sidelines of a Mahtomedi High School sports field. Parents, stirred by the brisk winds and budding environmental crisis, discussed whether they could perhaps harness the wind and help their kids work towards a renewable future. The result of this founding inspiration, the Zephyr Wind Turbine, now sits beside the football field and produces electric power that is credited to the school district.

Following that success, MAGI chair Paul Hoff says, “We decided the group should stay together and work on other issues.”

Since then, MAGI hasn’t slowed down.

It’s contributed to conversations and projects regarding the water level issues on White Bear Lake, partnered with the Wildwood Lions Club to provide a $1,000 environmental leadership scholarship to an outstanding Mahtomedi

High School senior and promoted and organized events such as the Mahtomedi Area Farmers Market and the Earth Day R.I.T.E of Spring.

In recent years, the group has pivoted toward the issue of safe pedestrian trails across the region. Some of the new changes occurring this summer, including new traffic lights at busy intersections, wider shoulders and flashing beacons at crossing, will promote the safety of the trails for travelers of all ages.

MAGI’s efforts, in tandem with the Lake Links Association, will help to complete the Lake Links project conceived in 2001. The path will allow pedestrians to travel entirely around White Bear Lake when completed.

With South Shore Boulevard due for construction, it’s an ideal time to extend the path through Mahtomedi.

651.209.1600 Though construction will cause some delays and disruptions, Hoff is enthusiastic about the opportunity it will soon bring to residents and visitors alike.

“We ask that people bear with the construction efforts,” Hoff says. “[The end result] will be better for both drivers and pedestrians.”

While building trails may not be the first thing to come to mind when you consider environmental sustainability, better opportunities for green transportation will bring many benefits.

“Trails are not just recreational amenities, nice as they are for that. They are becoming practical transportation routes within our communities so people can support local businesses, get to the library, go to church, school and parks without always getting in the car,” says Hoff. “It’s a bit of an economic engine.”

Environmental sustainability goes farther than recycling cans and decreasing water and gas usage. MAGI volunteers continue to investigate ways to produce renewable energy and encourage community commitment to sustainability— and there’s always more work to be done.

All are welcome at the organization’s meetings, held on the first Monday of every month.

“Not everyone is interested in everything we do,” Hoff says. “But there’s something for everyone to be interested in.”

If a community is only as special as the people that call it home, White Bear Lake is in a league of its own. And while our Best of 2022 readers’ choice survey draws attention to many of the businesses and organizations that help this place thrive, there can only be so many categories and winners! So, let’s take a moment to recognize a few more local gems that embody the spirit of White Bear Lake.

linking oUr CoMMUnitieS throUgh Safe trailS

Making a difference is a relentless pursuit. And for those who know Steve Wolgamot, it’s clear that his dedication and tenacity have made an impact in the White Bear Lake area.

A fixture of the Mahtomedi community, Wolgamot has served on various boards and foundations, including the Lake Links Association, a group focused on bringing the Lake Links Trail Network—a safe, 10-mile walking and biking loop around White Bear Lake—to fruition.

As one of the association’s founders, Wolgamot helped to pull $7.87 million in funding into the area between 2017–2021 by advocating for the project in all levels of government. “[Wolgamot] is a unique blend of technical and art, compassion and community, a renaissance man,” says Mike Brooks, Wolgamot’s friend and Lake Links chair.

“If asked, he would most likely say his involvement in Lake Links Association is for his grand-children and future generations of kids—that we should all have the right to feel safe.”

In honor of Wolgamot’s contributions, the Mahtomedi City Council co-named the city’s segment of the Lake Links Trail “Wolgamot Way” in April 2021. Wolgamot was also selected as the 2021 J. Stanley and Doris Hill Legacy Award recipient, which honors a local deserving individual committed to lifelong community service.

And last June, the Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation established the Wolgamot Lake Links Trail Enhancement Fund to secure the future prosperity of the community trail.

Every local hero has a catchphrase, and Wolgamot’s has always been (at least to the Lake Links Association board) “We Will Get This Done,” says Brooks. Maybe that’s why, if you ask around town, you’ll soon find the well-known Rosie the Riveter poster altered with Steve’s head (red bandana, biceps and all) under the familiar slogan, “We Can Do It.” “Steve has one of the best senses of humor,” Brooks says. “He just thought that was great.”

In January of 2021, not long after receiving word that funding for the last segments of Lake Links was secured, Wolgamot was diagnosed with brain cancer. While we were not able to speak with him for this piece, his children, Megan Malvey and Doug Wolgamot, offered the following, “In addition to all he has done for our community, we think he has earned a ‘best of ’ award in the categories of dad, grandpa, husband, brother, friend and neighbor. We are so proud of him, and we love him so much!”

How can children make a difference in their community? This is the question Children’s Performing Arts (CPA) seeks to answer in its signature “Spotlight on a Cause” production, hosted at Hanifl Performing Arts Center each summer.

“Growing up I didn’t understand how I could … give back to the community we live in,” says Sharon Hanifl-Lee, board chair and senior advising director at CPA. “I want the students that we work with to know that they have a voice in this world and that they can make a difference.”

Hanifl-Lee says the program, now in its fifth year, aims to build confidence and passion in students by helping them become informed on topics that impact their community.

“Spotlight on a Cause is really cool because we still get to put on a play, but we also get to learn about issues that are effecting us as students today … and bring awareness to a cause,” says Hanifl-Lee’s daughter Maddox Lee, 17,

scenes, students are taught to understand and empathize with another’s struggles.

“What better way to have students put themselves in somebody’s shoes?” Hanifl-Lee says.

Each year brings a new production and a new cause.

Past shows have covered topics such as addiction, dyslexia and the global water crisis. For the 2022 production, Pippin, students in grades nine–12 will focus on the cause of mental health.

“In our society right now, mental health is so prevalent, and our students are going through so much, especially coming off the pandemic,” says Hanifl-Lee. In this year’s show, the protagonist, Pippin, is seen dealing with insecurity and thoughts of suicide. Through conversation with experts while rehearsing difficult

Spreading the polar bear love

Medicine Chest Pharmacy is so much more than just a small-town pharmacy. In over 85 years of business, the downtown White Bear Lake staple has cemented themselves as a stop for locals and tourists alike under a fitting alias: “The Polar Bear Store.”

From ceramic figurines and ornaments to custom polar bear clothing, Medicine Chest’s expansive inventory of bear merchandise over the decades played an important role in solidifying the polar bear symbol in local legend.

“At this point, [polar bear merchandise] takes up at least half, if not more, of our gift space,” says store manager Lindsay Schlichting.

When Twin City Nursery closed its doors in 2014, Medicine Chest’s former owner purchased the company’s polar bear molds. And now, the neighborhoods of White Bear Lake are a stomping ground for bears of all shapes and sizes.

The statues found at Medicine Chest are the real deal: solid concrete, painted and coated to be weather resistant year-round. They come in a variety of sizes, with the biggest weighing in at about 600 lbs.

“They pretty much sell themselves,” Schlichting says.

“The polar bear has just become this iconic symbol of White Bear Lake. It’s nice to be able to reflect that in our store.”

That such a pharmacy has been able to survive—and thrive—as larger chain stores pop up is a testament to its importance to the community. Despite challenges during COVID-19, including supply chain issues and rising concrete pricing, the Polar Bear Store is still going strong.

“We are a small, independent business, so to be able to continue to bring people into White Bear Lake and help spread that sense of pride for the town …. I mean that’s why we all work here,” Schlichting says. “It all ties into pride for the town we live in.”

Preserving the spirit of White Bear Lake

Sometime in 1857, before the founding of Minnesota, a hot air balloon soared through the sky above a clear, blue lake.

Its pilot became enamored with the area, deciding then and there to build a cottage on its shores. And he did.

In the decades that followed, White Bear Lake became a gathering place—a resort town that drew people from near and far. And the adventurer and many of his descendants continued to call the town home.

“It’s just kind of intriguing to me,” says Sara Markoe Hanson, the executive director of the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society and the hot air balloon pilot’s great-greatgranddaughter. “There’s just something about the lake that … has drawn people to it for centuries.”

In an area with such a rich history, there’s nothing more important than documenting the stories that define us. And since 1970, the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society has done just that. What once began as an initiative to preserve the Fillebrown House evolved into so much more.

“Our mission is essentially to connect our community

to its past,” says Markoe Hanson. “We try to do that by collecting the history, preserving and saving it, then sharing it in whatever ways we can.”

The historical society services the five municipalities that touch the lake: Birchwood, Dellwood, Mahtomedi, White Bear Lake and White Bear Township. Markoe Hanson refers to these distinct areas as siblings. “They come from the same place, but they have very different personalities and approach[es],” she says.

Along with ongoing initiatives to promote learning and help residents engage with and understand their history, the historical society has embarked on many larger projects. In 2015, it was saving the White Bear Town Hall. In 2020, the historical society celebrated its 50th anniversary with a goal to document and share 50 community stories. In 2021, they began offering free, virtual programs on a variety of local historical topics.

And all throughout, the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society has continued to foster the area’s spirit of community through education and opportunity.

“One of my favorite things is just really connecting with people on that history and what it means to them,” says Markoe Hanson. “There’s never an end to the stories we can tell … and that’s really what keeps us going.”

areer inspiration can arrive from all sorts of avenues.

For Dustin Carlson, it was his road to recovery from a herniated disc as a teen that led him down the path to

becoming a chiropractor.

Carlson earned a doctoral degree from Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Missouri, has advanced training from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego and is certified in whiplash and motor vehicle injuries. He opened the Carlson Clinic of White Bear Lake in 2003. “My mission is to change healthcare,” he says. “I believe we can prevent the unnecessary

lifestyle and taking good care of our bodies, most of us don’t know where our food comes from—and how it gets to us. But learning more about the journey our food takes before it lands on our counters is more important than it may seem.

“You know your dentist and you know your doctor but how come you don’t know your farmer?” asks Michelle Bruhn, White Bear Lake suburban homesteader, local food advocate, garden writer, educator and farmers market manager.

Through an at-home garden and various community outreach initiatives, Bruhn has devoted herself to growing and educating on sustainable food systems within her community. And while Bruhn’s garden produces a plethora of fresh goodies for her family, she often supplements her own homegrown vegetables with a trip to the White Bear Lake Farmers Market.

“I rely on my local farmers because I cannot grow enough in my space to feed my family for the entire year,” Bruhn says.

“I look at farmers markets as a way to try something that I can’t grow enough of, to try new varieties or to buy a bunch of one thing to preserve.”

What once was an enjoyable outing for the kids has turned into a necessary errand to support her family’s lifestyle. But Bruhn says it’s still just as fun!

“I think I just fell in love with the farmers,” Bruhn says. “They are just great people that work really hard … and I realize the value that they bring to my family

Here are some of Bruhn’s top tips for making the most out of your local farmers market: Ask questions and get social!

But don’t be afraid to learn more! These farmers work and play in your community, so think of them as neighbors who share a passion for fresh foods. By asking questions about soil, what’s in season and growing techniques, you’ll not only get to

Here are some questions to consider next time you’re at the market: • Where are the farmers located?

Farmers appreciate this question, as it makes them feel recognized as a valued part of the community. Many take pride in where they are from and the land that they farm and may share more tidbits about their practices and produce.

• What are their organic practices?

Even if they are not certified organic, many local farmers engage in wholesome practices. Inquire about how they tend to the soil. Do they use any pesticides or fertilizers? How do they harvest the food? How these growers treat something as simple as a head of lettuce can have a major impact on the environment and your body after consumption. “If you feed the soil, it feeds you better,” Bruhn says.

• What produce do they have in rotation?

You can find out what products are coming in from a seasonal aspect and which ones are on their way out (which typically means sales!). This can help you plan more purposeful visits to fulfill your meal prepping dreams.

Keep an open mindset

It’s easy, even after asking the questions listed above, to fall into the same buying habits. Try to occasionally purchase some new varieties and products. This step will add life to your kitchen prac-

Plan out your trips

Farmers markets are not the same as your typical supermarket. While this statement may be obvious, it’s necessary to keep in mind. “Farmers are dealing with Mother Nature, where grocery stores are dealing with global food systems,” Bruhn says.

The produce you see throughout the growing season will change through the weeks and months. Plan out your trip to take advantage of the season’s pickings, what items you’ll need to stock up on, and how you’d like to utilize them at home.

By planning out your trip, you’ll only buy what you need, which prevents food waste and makes the shopping experience less overwhelming!

Observe

Make sure to acknowledge the presentation of the items. How are the products displayed? What do they look like? Is the table that they sit on clean? What is the vessel the items sit in? Though these may seem like obvious questions, they are essential to consider when purchasing high-quality products.

Bruhn suggests thinking of a trip to the farmers market almost like speed dating. Look around and observe all options before making a purchase. The farmers remain put while you get to browse. So, take advantage of that! While the first vendor you stop by may have gorgeous tomatoes, the next one may have even better ones at a fraction of the price.
