This issue is dedicated to celebrating the people, businesses and places that make Maple Grove so special. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” —Eleanor Roosevelt, former first lady of the United States
Readers, I am so excited to welcome you to the pages of our Best of Maple Grove 2024 issue. It is a pleasure to edit the pages of this long-standing magazine, and I thank you for creating such a lovely community to live, work and play in.
Since I have stepped into the role of editor for Maple Grove Magazine, it has been increasingly enjoyable to explore all the city has to offer. When planning my Editor’s Picks this year, I visited Maple Grove’s parks and found several areas that are perfect for picnicking. Alongside our locations, I’ve rounded up everything you will need for a cottagecore-inspired afternoon—complete with the essentials, the bites and sips, the outfits and the tunes. Go to page 30 to read more.
Without further ado, I invite you to flip to page 24 to meet the winners and finalists in our annual Readers’ Choice Poll. These businesses are, unquestionably, something to celebrate. I encourage you to explore these businesses—whether they’re already a familiar favorite or perhaps a new go-to.
Readers, you are what makes Maple Grove unique. Thank you, once again, for all you do for our great community and this magazine.
This month, our Focus on Maple Grove photo contest opens— and we invite you to submit your photos and memories for consideration. Go to page 48 to learn more, and submit your photos now through August 31 at maplegrovemag.com.
Cheers to you, Readers!

Managing finances can be intimidating — but Encore Financial has a breadth of experience assisting clients to ensure they are fiscally secure today and in the future. “We have a team of talented people with various areas of expertise and experience. We are confident we have an advisor that will match your needs and personality,” says Melissa Machlitt, co-owner.
Encore offers a wide range of services: education savings, estate planning, investment management, retirement planning, tax preparation and other financial services. Its mission is built to address clients’ needs at any point on their financial journey. “Whether we are planning for the long term or pivoting for a short-term event, clients can count on our team to be there,” Machlitt says. “We strive to be the best in the industry at providing personalized service. From the moment a client walks in the door, we want them to feel welcome and appreciated, and that carries through to everything we do.”
There are often misconceptions around working with a financial advisor. “We simplify the process, clearly outline any costs and work with anyone who is committed to their financial future, which includes those with modest income and assets,” Machlitt says. “We have a very hands-on approach and do the heavy lifting whenever possible.”
With the added value of having in-house investment managers, Encore builds portfolios from the ground up. “It’s unique for a boutique firm like ours to have that level of expertise in house,” Machlitt says. It also has in-house tax professionals, who offer another level of service.
The Encore team understands that the business of life can get in the way of financial matters. “Our job is to make sure you stay on track,” Machlitt says. “Whether it’s helping identify goals that are most important to you, running projections or coordinating your 401K plan, we’re right there for our clients.”

Questions? We have answers for what you need to know about our annual Readers’ Choice Poll.
Each year, our Best of Maple Grove Readers’ Choice Poll brings together our readers and social media followers, who support and honor local businesses and service providers with their votes.
1.
One entry was allowed per person; each ballot needed to include an email address.
2.
Voters needed to vote in at least five categories to ensure their ballot was counted.
3. Ballots must have been completed by 5 p.m. January 31, 2024.
*Any rule not adhered to may have resulted in entire surveys being discarded, and all results were subject to editorial discretion.
How are the categories chosen?
Each year, our editorial and management teams evaluate the categories to include topics our readers find most relevant and engaging. You’ll notice some new categories this year!
How does vote tallying work?
Once the poll closed and the votes were validated, tabulators determined which businesses were the top three vote-getters.
What’s a finalist vs. a winner?
The top three vote-getters in each category became finalists and were announced in the spring on our website. (Once votes were tabulated, our editorial team fact-checked the address and contact information for each finalist. If a finalist was no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., the next highest vote-getter(s) moved up to become a finalist.) The top vote-getter is the winner and is announced in July in our magazine and on our website.
Can a business or organization be a finalist if it’s located outside of the magazine’s coverage area?
Good question! In order to qualify as a finalist, each business or organization must be located in the community and/ or provide services to local residents.
How can a business get on next year’s ballot?
Since this is a write-in ballot, encourage clients or customers to vote for your business in our next readers' choice poll, which goes live on our website in January 2025.
I’m a winner! How do I purchase a framed cover?
Winners can request a free digital copy of the Best of 2024 magazine cover design, which also indicates the winning category and the business’s or organization’s name. Winners can also purchase a framed award certificate, which is 14x17 inches and features a black, wood frame. The cost is $125 per item, including shipping and handling, and can be ordered at localmedia.co/awardcertificate. —Editorial Staff
“The goal was to take a single photo without any photoshopping or manipulation. This timelapse photo was taken in total darkness. With the camera on a tripod and myself dressed in black, I ran in front of the camera and completed a series of covering and uncovering the sparkler
spelling out Maple Grove,” says hobbyist photographer Tom Danielson. “The first night did not go as planned because the sparkler expired before I could spell out Maple Grove. I came back with longer sparklers, and got the shot I wanted.” —Hailey Almsted

Slay the summer style game with these fabulous trends. Which will you be rocking this month?
Structured Chic: Polished yet breezy, structured styles are a hot ticket this summer. The combination of a lightweight linen vest and shorts is perfect for a sophisticated look. Dress it up with heels, or keep it casual with sneakers.
Fancy Footwork: Ballet flats and Mary Jane’s get a glamorous upgrade. Look for mesh ballet flats with rhinestones or patent leather Mary Jane’s with a touch of heel. Step out in style and confidence.
Light Meets Dark: Black, white and blue steal the show. Opt for
lightweight cotton or linen pieces to beat the heat while making a statement. Dare to be different, and embrace these hues.
Drop It: Dropped waists—especially in summer dresses—exude continental vibes. Embrace the relaxed silhouette, and capture the romance of the European streets.
Accessory Extravaganza: Layered and chunky accessories take center stage. Mix textures, colors and sizes to create a statement. Let your accessories elevate and express your unique style.

Have you ever had an opportunity that calls you to quickly change careers? That happens in His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik, an alternative history novel set in the Napoleonic era when captain Will Laurence and his crew of the H.M.S. Reliant capture a French frigate. In the ship’s hold, he finds an unhatched dragon egg. As they make their way back to England, something remarkable happens; the egg hatches. An unusual all-black dragon with six spines on his wings emerges and starts to explore the ship, sniffing and looking inquisitively at everything. The dragon eventually stops in front of Laurence and asks him a question. Laurence names the dragon Temeraire—this will change Laurence’s career.
Laurence’s new duty to the Crown is to leave the H.M.S. Reliant and join Britain’s Aerial Corps. Usually, an aeronaut is chosen specifically for each type of dragon. They will need to make a special exception since Temeraire and Laurence are already bonded. Upon arrival, it becomes obvious that Temeraire’s features are different than the Western European dragons training at the base. Laurence and Temeraire must work together to overcome these obstacles if they are to help defend England from Napoleon.

What’s the best way to beat the heat?
Sometimes, it comes by way of tart meets fruity, a pinky batch beverage or a lemonade (adult style) to punch up your tastebuds. Our friends at Lunds & Byerlys weigh in with some of their favorite ideas.
Limeade Kombucha Cocktail
On a very hot day, we love a glass of limeade. It has that juicy, sweet mid-tongue pucker that’s so refreshing and addictive. We’ve combined it with GT’s Unity kombucha, which tastes like cherries and coconut and gives a punch-like flavor, a light fizz and a pleasant acidic bite.
Rosé Sangria
Settle in for a citrusy, sweet-tart, supereasy-drinking summer batch cocktail. When we were dreaming up this recipe, we set some goals: Taste-wise, we wanted to create something fruity, refreshing and
delightfully drinkable. Aesthetically, our guiding principle was “pink on pink.” The result is a curated sangria you won’t want to miss. With cranberry, lemon, grapefruitrose vodka, strawberries, raspberries and orange, it’s got a mélange of fruit flavors, but the mix isn’t overwhelming or slapdash.
Low-ABV Berry Lemonade Cocktail
This drink is lemony, with complex undertones and an outsized amount of pucker. It’s super tart and refreshing and goes down easily, though not wantonly. It’s got surprising depth, almost like it has iced tea in it, which simultaneously adds to the complexity and the drinkability.

Maple Grove’s newest donut shop serves up fresh creations daily.
By Mollee FranciscoA NEON SIGN on the wall greets visitors to Maple Grove’s newest donut shop, announcing, “Uffda Donuts Make Me Happy,” and it’s admittedly hard not to smile at the cases of pillowy goodness in a rainbow of colors and flavors.
Uffda Donuts opened last October, east of the Weaver Lake Road/I-94 exit. The bakery is located right next to Great Harvest Bread Co., which is convenient for the Sengs who have also owned that business for the past six years.
But one of the items not on the
Great Harvest Bread Co. menu is donuts. The Sengs noticed a lack of donut shops in Maple Grove and thought they could help fill a need.
Operating Great Harvest Bread Co. gave the Sengs the confidence to add a donut shop to their portfolio. “We love to be baking and making,” Mary Seng says. “We’re good at it.”
With a focus on making donuts fresh daily with the best quality ingredients, the Sengs opened Uffda Donuts. “Everything is natural and fresh with no preservatives,” Seng says. “You may pay
more, but the quality is better.”
Each day, Uffda Donuts cranks out dozens of varieties of donuts from the classic raised, old-fashioned and cake donuts to specialty donuts filled with jelly or cream or topped with unexpected ingredients, like cereal. It also offers cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, croissants and the donut-croissant hybrid cronut, along with a curated selection of beverages.
On Wednesdays, it has glutenfree donuts on the menu while Thursdays feature vegan donuts.
“We want everyone to have a donut and enjoy it,” Seng says.
For special occasions, Uffda Donuts offers a selection of giant donuts. With a few days’ notice, the bakery can crank out oversized letter and number donuts or even a three-tiered donut cake.
It frequently changes out offerings to highlight seasonal flavors and new creations. “We hope to have ... summer fruits that we can incorporate with our donut recipes,” Seng says. In the fall, Uffda Donuts offered pumpkin pie and apple pie flavored donuts. As the weather got colder, there were peppermint, hot cocoa and s’mores donuts on the menu. January brought Champagne-themed donuts as well as a Purple Rain creation in honor of the Minnesota Vikings.
Uffda Donuts aims to be a quintessential Minnesota donut shop, whether it’s paying homage to the home team, taking flavor suggestions from customers or borrowing a uniquely Minnesota phrase to serve as its name. “My husband came up with the name,” Seng says. “I really like that word. It feels like true Minnesota.”
So far, Maple Grove seems to be giving its approval. Seng says the shop has been buzzing with activity since its opening last fall. “We have a lot of regulars,” she says. “We recognize a lot of them.”

Taekwondo athlete first to compete in Olympics for The Gambia.
By Mollee FranciscoWHEN ALASAN ANN takes the world stage this summer to compete at the Paris Olympics, win or lose, he will already have made history. In February, the 23-year-old Maple Grove resident became the first athlete representing The Gambia to qualify for the Olympics in taekwondo. Though he was born in the U.S., Ann meets the criteria to represent The Gambia because his father hails from the African country.
“It was insane, really,” Ann says of qualifying. “I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock.”
It’s a far cry from his humble beginnings in the sport. Ann figures he was just 6 or 7 years old when he walked through the doors of World Taekwondo Academy in Maple Grove for the first time.
“When he first came, his mom was just looking for an outlet,” says grandmaster Eui Lee, Ann’s coach and a decorated taekwondo athlete in his own right. “He had so much energy, but he lacked focus.”
Ann’s mother enrolled him in the after-school programs. At the time, Ann didn’t know what to expect of taekwondo. “I thought it was super cool with all the belts and ninja stuff,” he says.
But it wasn’t love at first kick. “I was mad,” Ann says. “Like, ‘Why am I here? I can’t get away with anything.’”
Learning discipline was hard, but it paid off. By the time Ann was 12, Lee started to notice his true potential. “He was bigger and not as athletic,” Lee says. “But he was fearless. He went out there and competed. Whatever happened, happened.”
Ann competed in his first national competition at age 12. Two years later, he made the nationals team. By 16, he was competing in trials to make the U.S. team. “Step by step, I was getting closer,” Ann says. “And the closer I got, the stronger the passion became.”
For the last decade, the 2019 Maple Grove Senior High School graduate has traveled around the world from the United Arab Emirates to Costa Rica to his favorite stop so far, South Korea, competing at the highest level of the sport. But it was a competition in Paris that really whet his appetite
for the Olympics. “It helped fuel the fire,” Ann says.
Before he could head to the qualifying trials, though, his Olympic dream was nearly shattered when he was hit in the leg by a stray bullet. He had been at a restaurant opening with friends when it occured last October. “It was very scary,” he says. “I thought my career was over.”
Fortunately for Ann, the bullet hit muscle. “Shout out to taekwondo for helping me build all that muscle,” Ann says. Doctors were able to remove the bullet without any permanent damage. “He was lucky he was able to recover,” Lee says.
Healthy enough to compete, Ann made it to the African qualifier in Dakar, Senegal. In the Olympics, the top two competitors from each continent are invited to compete along with five wild cards for each weight category. Ann qualified in the +80 kg (around 175 pounds) category and will now be among 128 athletes competing for gold in taekwondo.
“It’s an honor to be able to compete,” Ann says. “I’m excited to show what I can do.”
Lee says there’s no reason he can’t bring home a medal. “Anyone there at that level has a shot,” he says.
His advice for Ann is to remember what got him to the Olympics. “He’s got a lot of great qualities,” says Lee, citing Ann’s discipline, work ethic, humility and level-headedness. “Win or lose, we’ll be proud of him.”
For his part, Ann isn’t going to Paris to lose. “I’m definitely going looking for gold,” he says.
And when the Olympian returns home, he’s hoping to capitalize on Olympic fever as he and Lee open a taekwondo school together. “We want to grow the community,” Ann says.
The 2024 Olympics take place July 26 through August 11 in Paris. Some 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 329 events across 32 sports.

Maple Grove Community Center project breaks ground this month.
By Emily GeddeCOMMUNITY CENTERS can often be referred to as the heartbeat of a community. The City of Maple Grove recognizes its value, and this July will break ground on the first phase of a multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion project on the Maple Grove Community Center.
The multimillion-dollar renovation of the
Grove Community Center includes building renovations, upgrades, landscaping, aquatic improvements and more.
Broken up into three phases, the first, expected to break ground this month, includes a new ice rink, locker rooms, concourse, lobby, parking lot improvements and geothermal refrigeration improvements.
“It’s a massive project,” says Chuck Stifter, Maple Grove Parks and Recreation director. “We’ve been working on this since 2018.”
Following the birth of the idea for the project, many studies were conducted, including community engagement to determine the public’s needs. The input led to the development of a master plan, a referendum and many meetings to educate community members.
“It’s critical to have community support for projects this size,” Stifter says.
“We are deliberately separating out phase one to only be working in the arena area,” Stifter says, adding following phases will include building renovations and upgrades, landscaping as well as indoor and outdoor aquatic improvements.
After six years of buildup, preparing to officially put shovels in the dirt is exciting, Stifter says. Construction is expected to take about 14 months, with the hope of completing phase one by mid-September 2025—just in time for hockey season.
“That’s important,” he says, noting
the community center serves as Maple Grove Senior High School’s home ice. In addition, the City of Maple Grove has strong partnerships with the local youth hockey association, Stifter says. “They’re a valuable partner and our main user,” he says. “They partner not only in guiding us in designing this appropriately but also financially.”
In the same breath, Stifter mentions that the community center’s other two rinks will remain in operation during production of the third sheet of ice.
The entire project’s plan aims to reduce the building’s energy usage by up to 80 percent, compared to similar facilities. “That’s a pretty progressive effort on the city’s part,” Stifter says. “When we hire architects, we tell them that sustainability and putting thought into the future is important.”
With start and completion dates of phase one becoming clear, Stifter says one of the more popular questions he and other project officials receive is: When are the next phases expected to begin? “We recognize the arena attracts a defined audience, and we do serve a lot more people of the community in the rest of our building,” he says. “... We’re continuing to seek additional funding resources, including a state bonding bill request ... we’ll have a better understanding once those are announced on how to better define the scope of the rest of the project.”
“... It’s a massive endeavor,” Stifter says. “It’s going to be exciting for the community.”

Picture this: The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. The sounds of nature are calling to you—welcoming you into its home. Grab your spouse, your kids, your friends— whomever it might be—and head into Maple Grove’s great outdoors for a cottagecore-inspired picnic. We compiled everything you need for the picnic of your dreams—from eco-friendly essentials to essential cottagecore styles. Happy Picnicking!
WRITTEN BY HAILEY ALMSTED• Out are the days of one-time-use products. Although compostable utensils and plates are great, swap them out for reusable products. Use what you already have—or visit a vintage store for gently loved pieces. Linen napkins are functional and renewable. Reusable glassware straws can level up any drinkware. Wooden cutting boards work wonderfully as serving platters.
• Capture the aesthetic with a patterned blanket. Think: Grandma’s vintage blankets that are oh-so-cozy. Cream or white sheets and comforters also work.
• Picnic baskets fit the aesthetic, but to keep food and beverages cool, consider a cooler or a reusable thermal bag with ice.
• Level up the atmosphere with wildflowers. Whether you stop by the farmers market or forage on your own. Baby’s Breath, greenery and pops of colorful flowers add to the playful day.
• Capture every detail of your Pinterestworthy day with a FUJIFILM instant camera or digital camera. Photography experts may want to splurge for a film camera. (Submit images to our annual photo contest—find details on page 48!)
Any good afternoon includes a curated playlist. Consider adding these whimsical tunes to your outing:
1. August by Taylor Swift
2. Dancing Queen by ABBA
3. Daylight by David Kushner
4. Dial Drunk by Noah Kahan
5. Golden Hour by JVKE
6. Grace by Surfaces
7. Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles
8. La Vie En Rose by Daniela Andrade
9. Sunflower by Harry Styles
10. Too Sweet by Hozier
• Finger Foods: Include a rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables found fresh at the Maple Grove Farmers Market, 9060 Zanzibar Lane N. Add artisanal cheeses, cured meats and sourdough bread for a full charcuterie spread.
• Sliced Sandwiches: Turn your picnic into a tea party with sandwiches cut into fours. Or swap your white sandwich bread out for a croissant or baguette. (Find recipes for Chicken Waldorf Salad Sandwiches and Quick Veggie Sandwiches at maplegrovemag.com.)
• Decadent Desserts: Macaron, English scones, fruit tarts and pastries should be your go-to for desserts. Serve alongside jam for gardenparty-inspired fare.
• Summer-Inspired Sips: Pack lemonade or fresh lemon water. Mix up mocktails, using sparkling water and fruit juices.

When planning your picnic day outfit, look toward the cottagecore style by embracing fashion that is harmonious with nature. Think: You’ve just walked out of a Jane Austen novel and into the present day. Cottagecore is all about the idyllic lifestyle—soft florals, pastel tones and voluminous silhouettes reign supreme. Think about these four key elements when planning your summer style:
Colors: Consider cream tones instead of bright whites, light blues and rose pinks. Sage greens and lavender purples also fit here.
Patterns: Toile is queen—this floral pattern is classic and can be found in new and old fashion alike. Dainty floral patterns are also a beautiful go-to and can be found in a wide range of fashion picks, including dresses, blouses and even denim. Scalloped and lace edges can lend a hand here, too.
Silhouettes: Ditch the tight, waist-cinching corset for a blouse or dress with a corset
silhouette—breathable, yet trendy. Puffed sleeves continue to dominate alongside florals—and the two paired together? A match made in cottagecore heaven.
Textures: When shopping for cottagecore styles, it’s all about searching for pieces made out of natural fabrics, including linen and cotton. Comfort is important, and flowing pieces fit right into the cottagecore lifestyle. Look toward lowrise linen pants or a linen button-up blouse. Straw accessories, including the beloved oversized brim hats and bags, pair perfectly with a picnic look.
Other details to take into consideration: Femininity is the backbone of the cottagecore style. So think about adding a bow/ribbon to your hair or even to your accessories—the more the merrier. Embroidery and custom monogrammed items add a personalized touch to your look. Consider shopping vintage instead of new—many of these styles were once popular, so you may have luck at local thrift stores.
Croft & Stern Jewelry Designs excels at crafting contemporary heirlooms created from your cherished jewelry.
At the helm is owner Kelly Sternau, leading a team devoted to the artistry of crafting personalized jewelry. The expertly trained staff includes GIA-accredited bench jewelers, lapidarists, gemologists and CAD designers with backgrounds in fine arts and jewelry fabrication.
“The core structure of what makes us different is our commitment to custom jewelry,” Sternau says. “Our jewelry is manufactured in-house from start to finish; the work is performed on site.”
When it comes to the heirloom pieces for remodeling, some come by way of a beloved family member, or perhaps one’s own jewelry may benefit from a change. “Capturing sentiment is what we do best here,” Sternau says. “We are unique because we will reset and design for you and your gemstones, making true one-of-a-kind jewelry.”
The transformations are stunning and highlight the team’s ability to replicate a piece’s emotional connection while creating a new vision. For example, a ring, featuring spectacular diamonds, was reset into a gorgeous right-hand style ring. Another family had its precious jewelry recrafted into bezel set rings, to be enjoyed by three members of the next generation. Using special diamonds from a collection of jewelry,
a bracelet, utilizing the same pattern as the ring for sentimental reasons, was created with spectacular results. “We are honored to be a part of so many amazing stories of love and family,” Sternau says. “The 4-6 weeklong custom order process is streamlined with CAD technology, and by using 3D printers, a guest can see and try on the jewelry concept before it is made.”
For customers in the market for something already created, Croft & Stern showcases a meticulously curated selection of limited-run, small-batch, ready-to-wear fine jewelry. In addition, on-site jewelry repair and appraisal services are offered.

We’ve gathered a group of striking cocktails from across the West Metro.
Written by Editorial Staff Photos by Chris EmeottThese cocktails aren’t wallflowers; they’re conversation starters. You know, the kind of drinks that garner a second glance at the menu or spark the question, “Which one is that?” as they travel across the restaurant. Here’s to the summer specials and marvelous mainstays that leave us in high spirits.
Summer arrives by the bucketful at Lookout Bar & Grill, which welcomes back its seasonal Summer Bucket Cocktails. Among this year’s lineup is the Tiki bar-inspired Falkor’s Day Off, featuring a tropical mix of Dragonberry Bacardí, Malibu Black and cranberry and pineapple juices. Lookout Bar & Grill, 8672 Pineview Lane N., Maple Grove; 763.424.4365; lookoutbarandgrill.com
Fifty Shades of Pink delivers on the name. The fresh-squeezed blood orange juice in this tequila-based cocktail results in an endless variation of hues. Rounded out with a mellowing swirl of coconut cream and a hint of lime, this cocktail is the perfect sipper for a summer out and about. The Fox and Pantry, 15725 37th Ave. N. #7, Plymouth; 763.553.7938; thefoxandpantry.com
Sip on the Smoking Gun Maple Old Fashioned, featuring Knob Creek Single Barrel Bourbon freshly smoked with oak. The kicker? This bourbon cocktail is topped with a house-made golden malt waffle and bacon. Brick & Bourbon, 7887 Elm Creek Blvd. N., Maple Grove; 763.208.9477; brickandbourbon.com
Tantalize your taste buds with a Lychee Martini. Dry vermouth makes its classic appearance in this vodka Martini, but citrusy triple sec and sweet lychee juice lend a fruity finish to the drink. Topped off with a fresh piece of lychee, this delicate cocktail is a standout. Kobe Japanese Restaurant, 15555 34th Ave. N., Plymouth; 763.559.9999; kobeplymouth.com
Martinis are all the rage, and this Lemon Basil Martini is a perfect summer sip. Made with Tanqueray (a smooth London dry gin), lemon juice, honey, simple syrup and basil leaves— what’s not to love? Paulie’s, 15641 Grove Circle N.; 763.205.9784; mypaulies.com
Bubbly Champagne meets herbaceous gin to create the Violet French 75 Butterfly pea flower tea-infused gin is a mouthful, but it’s also what creates the striking purple hue. A dash of black lemon bitters adds another twist to the classic French 75, introducing an eartheir note than the traditional tart zip of lemon juice. Northern Taphouse, 220 Carlson Parkway N., Plymouth; 763.476.1011; northerntaphouse.com
Cedar Wood Old Fashioned is made with whiskey, aged aquavit, piloncillo and cedar wood. Granted, aquavit can be an acquired taste, but is there a better way to give the spicy spirit an inaugural ride over your taste buds than with this spin on an Old Fashioned? Layline, 301 Water St., Excelsior; 952.856.8003; laylinerestaurant.com
A cousin to the Negroni, the Minnetonka Boulevardier arrives with rye, Aperol and sweet vermouth. Aperol, an Italian apéritif, has been having a moment in the spritz world, so give it a spin with this Skipper sipper. Spasso, 17523 Minnetonka Blvd., Minnetonka; 952.224.9555; spassomn.com
The Saffron Margarita features saffron-infused tequila, black cardamom, clementine juice and lava salt. The Margarita ranks right up there with the Martini for most recipe variations. Try this version—can you ever go wrong with saffron on the ingredient list? Macanda, 294 Grove Lane E., Wayzata; 952.679.1222; macandawayzata.com
The mind-bendingly creative Makhani Martini is inspired by the Indian dish, Butter Chicken. Clarified Tikka Masala Sauce is added to a blend of Smirnoff vodka, lime and simple syrup which yields a delightful melange of smoky, sweet and sour. Raag Progressive Indian Cuisine, 3812 W. 50th St., Mpls.; 952.405.8367; raagindiancuisine.com
The Hurricane is delicious both in taste and in the eye candy department. Playing off the classic 1940s concoction originating in New Orleans, this version combines a mix of passion fruit, pineapple and mango juice balanced out by Chinola, a passion fruit liqueur from the Dominican Republic. The drink is garnished with a storm-torn umbrella and a “bling cherry,” aka a maraschino cherry bathed in glitter. Mr. Paul’s Supper Club, 3917 Market St., Edina; 612.259.8614; mrpaulssupperclub.com
Sip on the Double Entendre Martini, featuring Zyr vodka, Sonoma-Cutrer rosé, brut Champagne and fresh lime juice. The kicker? This shaker tin cocktail is poured over cotton candy. Brick & Bourbon, 7887 Elm Creek Blvd. N., Maple Grove; 763.208.9477; brickandbourbon.com
The bright citrus notes of a Paloma are perfect for enhancing a vibrant patio atmosphere. This summer’s rendition has a tropical twist thanks to a hibiscus and grapefruit-infused blanco tequila, making it the perfect accompaniment for balmy summer evenings. Pajarito, 3910 W. 50th St., Edina; 612.268.4770; pajaritorestaurant.com
Note: Beverage menus are updated from time to time. If you don’t see one of the suggested cocktails listed, try another sip. Be sure to let us know if you discover something worth cheersing about in the West Metro.
