Scheidler,
Welcome, readers, to our 20th anniversary as Maple Grove’s premier community lifestyle magazine. We couldn’t be prouder of our long-standing roots in and commitment to this community. A lot has changed over the course of two decades, but we look back with pride and joy at the relationships we’ve made, the community we’ve been a part of and the stories we’ve told.
Over the years, we’ve met residents who are the cornerstone to the success of this community and others who are enthusiastically leading Maple Grove into the future. Our pages have been filled with deeply-rooted businesses, ventures that have leaned into evolving alongside the community and newcomers who are striving to make their mark. Residents, business owners, creatives, educators, health and wellness providers and a host of others have all shared their wonderful stories within our pages.
As we’ve watched Maple Grove grow over the years, Maple Grove Magazine and its sister publications have done their share of growing too. I fondly recall the excitement in 2005 when the premiere issue of Maple Grove Magazine landed in your mailboxes. And that same enthusiasm has expanded over the years. From launching three magazines 20 years ago to now publishing eight thriving lifestyle magazines and operating growing websites and social media platforms, we stay true to our original mission: focusing on local residents, businesses and services while shining an appreciative light on what makes this community a great place to live, work and play.
Our Editorial team is eager to continue our legacy and proudly offers original, engaging and elevated content, written exclusively by our team of writers. Alongside them, our talented Art, Production and Sales team members work month after month—illuminating the spotlight that glows from within Maple Grove. We can’t thank them enough.
Most importantly, thank you—dear readers and advertisers—for your continued interest, loyalty and support of Maple Grove Magazine. Some of you have been with us from the beginning, and we look forward to walking into the next 20 years with you and welcoming more readers and businesses to our pages.
With appreciation,

Maple Grove is home to Minnesota’s first indoor dry-slide and air court park, Slick City, opened by coowners Mike and Annie Kelly. Its 43,000-square-foot facilities offer a variety of thrilling activities. Slides include the Fast Lane, the Royal Flush and the Mega Launch. There’s also the Junior Jungle, a playground for children under 45 inches, and the Sport Air Courts, combining trampolines and shooting hoops.
“Each attraction is designed to provide a different kind of adventure, and we love seeing families and friends challenge themselves to try them all,” Mike says. “Our goal was to create a dynamic space where kids and adults alike could enjoy thrilling experiences together. We wanted to build a park that felt energetic, innovative and full of adventure.”
Mike says that part of the park’s appeal is its versatility and availability year-round. “As parents, we know how challenging it can be to find engaging indoor activities, especially during the long winters,” Mike says. “We’re thrilled to see families already enjoying it since the recent opening!” —Emma Souza

“This vibrant composition captures the energy of an untamed forest, where bursts of yellow, emerald and cobalt play across the canvas like sunlight filtered through leaves,” artist Julie Miller says. “There’s a raw freedom in the brushwork—ideal for modern interiors, seeking bold texture and movement.”

It’s time to go back to school! Since the mid-1800s, Maple Grove’s dedication to education has been well documented. In 1858, the children of early settlers gathered at the home of Phineas Newton (1812–1887) where classes were taught by his wife, Mercy Jane Champlin Newton (1818–1907). Several years later, the first school building was constructed on the southwest corner of Territorial Road and Ranchview Lane. In 1887 it was replaced at the same location with a new building that still exists. The Maple Grove School, also known as District 42, served local children until it closed when consolidated into what is now Independent School District (ISD) #279.
Today ISD 279 students continue to excel in academics, athletics and the arts. The district’s mission statement likely mirrors what our city’s earlier settlers envisioned as well: “Our mission is to inspire and prepare each and every scholar with the confidence, courage and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning.”

Ally Kubalak had a problem. As her school-aged sons started getting into sports, the Minnetonka mom and hairstylist found herself on the sidelines, cheering them on while simultaneously scanning the crowds for school gear that she actually wanted to wear. “There were not a ton of options, mainly for us moms,” she says. Kubalak talked with other sports
moms and found that they felt the same—the school merchandise was just not their style. Knowing she wasn’t alone in her search for mom-appealing sports gear, Kubalak took matters into her own hands. “I thought, ‘I love fashion, and I’d like to have a side hustle,’” she says. So, Kubalak bought a heat press, downloaded an app and launched 15.20
Apparel, a custom school apparel shop, designed to give moms the kind of gear that meets their style.
Over the last year, Kubalak has created apparel for more than a dozen high schools in the Twin Cities metro, including Maple Grove Senior High School (MGSH).
Kubalak’s designs are clean and understated. “I’ve always been into that classic
preppy look,” she says, noting Ralph Lauren’s look as a strong influence. “Once I settled on a crest emblem, I just played around with that.”
The crest provides the basis for Kubalak to customize her designs for each school or sport. For example, the crest for MGSH features a block M, Providence Academy’s features a lion and Benilde–St. Margaret’s Red Knights includes a medieval knight’s helmet.
Kubalak has added her designs to hats, sweatshirts and sweatpants, T-shirts, tote bags and more. Her most popular pieces are crew neck sweatshirts and quarterzip tops, but Kubalak’s personal favorites are the button-down shirts with the crest emblem on the breast pocket. “I know what I like to wear, and I’ve just been sticking to that,” she says. “I want it to feel and fit like I want it. I want things to be quality.”
Kubalak’s creations have slowly been amassing a following since launching 15.20 Apparel last May. Her first customers were her friends and some of her clients. “I’ve got a great base to work with,” she says.
Kubalak has also toted her creations to various markets, including local art fairs, but most of her new customers are a result of someone seeing her merchandise at a game and asking about it. “I’ve seen people wearing them at games,” she says. “And it’s so cool to have created this new community. It’s been so much fun.”
As she looks to the future, Kubalak dreams of opening a brick-and-mortar location to showcase her work. “I’d love to get my boys involved and make it a family thing,” she says.
For now, she’s in learning mode—discovering both how to build and run a business and also determining what gaps she can fill with her products. “I’m always looking for pieces that haven’t been done yet,” Kubalak says. So far, so good. “I feel like I found a niche,” she says.

A retired FBI agent from Maple Grove had to laugh when he recalled a comment made about him when he started a photography business. “People have told me they didn’t know I had a creative side,” Dean Scheidler says.
But after a handful of years in the FBI and trips to 32 countries around the world, Dean’s photographs are truly something to behold.
The passion for capturing the beauty of nature, while not uncovered until later in life, developed early on. Growing up in
Amherst, Ohio, about 30 miles outside of Cleveland, Dean’s childhood memories involve appreciating the beauty of nature. As one of seven children, he recalls times he would escape to the outdoors whenever possible.
He also discusses a fascination with his family’s encyclopedia set that sparked his curiosity about the world. “I remember spending time reading through them, looking at photos of faraway places and dreaming of one day seeing those things in person,” he says.
Fast forward 50 years, and those dreams have come true. Dean feels fortunate for his upbringing, which instilled in him a greater appreciation for life’s experiences and ultimately set the stage for how he would enjoy his retirement years.
While Dean misses some aspects of his FBI work, he says he is thoroughly
enjoying this next chapter. Unlike many former agents who transition into security or private investigations, Dean returned to his roots and passion for nature, becoming a photographer.
His love for photography began when his twin children, Lauren and Connor Scheidler, were young. He recalls documenting their lives with a film camera, then digital and eventually his cell phone. His interest in photography grew beyond family documentation during an emptynester trip to Utah’s national parks with his wife, Julie Scheidler. This trip inspired him to spend more time capturing and documenting his travels, creating digital time capsules. The couple maintain a travel log, with Dean providing the photos and Julie writing the stories. “If nothing else, if our memories ever fail, we’ll have something to look at,” Dean says. What started as a hobby has now become a business for the self-taught photographer. In 2023, after sharing his photos on social media, someone reached out to purchase his work for an office, sparking the idea to launch Dean Scheidler Photography.
He says he encourages his children to avoid regrets, so he decided to try his hand at business rather than wonder what might have been. His photos, which capture the beauty and variety of the planet, aim to inspire others to travel and appreciate nature.
Dean finds it hard to pick a favorite destination, but lists Iceland, New Zealand and Norway as top contenders. Recently, he and Julie returned from a cruise to Antarctica. “That was the most unique place I’ve ever been to in my life,” he says.
And, despite traveling the world, Dean reminds people of the beauty close to home in Minnesota. Many of his photos of flowers are taken in his own backyard. “I find beauty in all kinds of things,” he says. “In my photos, I’m trying to do what I saw in the encyclopedias I used to look at. I want to give people a way to see places they’ll never get to see.”

There is one word to describe the youth of Maple Grove: accomplished. From perfect ACT scores and accelerated classes to being a business co-owner, our annual Senior Spotlight illuminates the remarkable things these students have achieved. Now, we get to share that all with you, Readers.
Earlier this year, we asked school administrators and staff to nominate outstanding students (Class of 2026) who will leave an indelible mark on their school’s history. “Adam is an exceptional scholar, athlete and leader whose dedication to excellence shines in every aspect of his life. With a perfect 36 on the ACT, a 4.15 cumulative GPA and recognition as an AP Scholar with Honor, he has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to academic achievement while taking on a rigorous course load. As [the president] of the [Maple Grove chapter of the] National Honor Society, he exemplifies integrity, service and leadership, extending his passion for learning beyond the classroom by tutoring students in math both independently and through online ACT prep. His impact in the community is profound, as he has helped countless students gain confidence in their academic abilities. Beyond
academics, Adam is a standout athlete, excelling in Crimson hockey and tennis while earning the honor of being a two-time Minnesota Hockey Advancement Program Player of the Year nominee. As a LINK Crew member, he mentors and guides younger students, fostering a positive and supportive school environment. His unwavering dedication to excellence, leadership and service makes him not only an outstanding student but also an inspiration to his peers and community.” —Katie Grivna, National Honor Society advisor
What is an achievement or experience from your high school career that you are most proud of?
I am most proud of my perseverance during the second trimester of my junior year. Even though I was battling almost daily migraines, a threemonth-long sinus infection and two torn patellar tendons, I scored a 36
on the ACT, got straight A’s in five AP [Advanced Placement] classes and Spanish 5, and scored a goal for the Crimson at Hockey Day Minnesota at Valley Fair. During this time, I proved to myself that even though setbacks in my life will be unavoidable, I can power through them.
What is your favorite childhood book?
Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola. My mom likes to tell stories of her Italian mother—my Nana—reading that book to her when she was a child. It’s an awesome story, but it has a cool personal heritage connection for me as well.
What is your favorite school lunch?
… The chicken bites. I get thirds on those days. The best items to go with that are three big scoops of carrots, a Johnny Pop ... and two of the frozen strawberry cups.
BENILDE-ST.
MARGARET’S (BSM)
“Nadia has not only been a valuable member of the BSM community at large, but she has also become a leader in many different aspects of BSM, most notably as the Student Council junior class president. She’s served on the Student Council every year of her high school career so far. She received an award for her efforts in Student Council at the end of her sophomore year. For BSM’s RoboCup Rescue team, not many juniors are given roles as leaders for part of our robot’s design and development sub-teams. Nadia is one of the rare juniors who [was] trusted by her senior peers to become a leader for an important subsystem of the team’s robot. Nadia has received engineering awards at the end of both her freshman and sophomore years.” — Charles Nepumuceno, Engineering Department chair and teacher
What is something that your peers might not know about you?
My peers might not know that I am a part owner of a blueberry farm in Kentucky, and I spend my summers there, growing and selling blueberries. Our blueberries are delicious, and I love talking with families when they come to the farm about our berries.
What person in history would you most like to speak at your graduation ceremony?
Eliza Hamilton. I admire her dedication to her community and her strong activist work.
What is your favorite childhood book?
Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. My mom used to read it to me often when I was little, and it reminds me of the importance of my family, especially my mom. She has done so much for me and worked incredibly hard, and I can only hope that I could be like her.
“Elijah is an extraordinary student whose curiosity and passion for learning knows no bounds. Elijah is especially interested in STEM fields, and, through the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program, has been taking accelerated classes since the sixth grade ... Elijah is an avid participant in numerous school activities, including being the top scorer on our school Math League team, which will soon compete in the state competition. Mr. Thomas, Elijah’s Math League coach, credits Elijah’s leadership, perseverance and passion for mathematics as being major factors in the team’s success. Elijah was recently recognized as being one of the Top 50 scorers nationwide on the Classic Learning Test 10, a college preparatory exam designed specifically for students at classical schools. While mathematics is his passion, Elijah is a well-rounded student, who is an avid participant in his discussion-based classes. He notes that he has particularly enjoyed studying psychology, which he says has helped him to better understand how our brains work and how we can better interact and communicate with one another.” —Katherine Good, director of academics
What is something that your peers might not know about you?
Once, for my birthday, I asked for a library, because I wanted a large supply of books. While an entire library was obviously unfeasible, for my present that year, we went to several bookstores and started my collection, which now numbers well over 50 books. I have read many of them multiple times, and to this day, I remain an avid reader.

Homeowners bring the great outdoors indoors with a full remodel.
Eighteen years ago, Mitch Johnson of J Brothers Design – Build – Remodel completed one of his first projects: a home on Maple Grove’s Fish Lake. Nearly two decades later, Mitch and his wife, Carrie Johnson, revisited the home and its new homeowners. Now, it’s a complete home renovation from top to bottom.
“When we walked in, I thought, ‘I’ve been here before,’” Mitch says. “This whole job was relocating everything that we’ve done in the past … Seeing the
vision in two different people’s eyes, it’s really cool for us.”
There were several items (including opening the wall between the kitchen and the family room, creating a large kitchen island with seating, and flipping the primary bedroom and bathroom) that the homeowners had on their musthave checklist. After meeting with several companies, the homeowner says, “[We] found out [the Johnsons] had included all of those features in their own home.
That made us feel very comfortable that they knew what we ultimately wanted our home to look like.”
The home underwent a complete layout renovation, swapping the mudroom and dining areas, moving the primary suite from the front to the back of the house and adding a powder room. Now, the Maple Grove home boasts gorgeous views of the lake, superb hosting space and luxurious, high-end finishes to last a lifetime.
(page 19)
The home’s previous layout didn’t allow for the eat-in/live-in concept, as the dining space was originally in the front of the house. The J Brothers team tore down walls between the new dining and living areas, and now, the open concept plan, alongside wall-to-wall windows, allows for sweeping views of Fish Lake and the newly built porch.
The homeowners wanted an eat-in kitchen where the family, including their three sons, ages 17, 20 and 25, could spend time together, and the expansive island is just that. Not only is it a stunning centerpiece, but it is functional, too. “There are hidden elements [in the island],” Mitch Johnson says. “On one side, there are custom dog bowls with their dog food. It’s hidden and out of the way, but it’s for their everyday life.” The island seats four and has a view of Fish Lake.
The beautiful stone arch over the oven serves as a marvelous focal point, and the stone is utilized throughout the home’s several fireplaces. Moreover, the custom-designed space feels entirely luxe with its dark green cabinetry, gold pendant lighting, panel-front appliances, a pot-filler and bar sink.
The walk-in pantry originally served as the mudroom, which was rerouted to the front of the home, and is now home to small appliances, snacks and food, taking the clutter out of the kitchen. “Being able to have the pantry doors open or closed at any time and still look good was definitely a priority,” the homeowner says. The pantry door—disguised as a floor-to-ceiling cabinet—blends in with the rest of the kitchen, and the endless storage inside the room ensures it stays tidy and organized. Its dark green tile ties together the two spaces.
Prior to the remodel, there was a sunken family room with two large posts. Now, all on one level and the posts removed, the area serves as an invitation to the home. It’s ideal for hosting gatherings as it is open to the kitchen and just off the new mudroom area, where the powder room is located. With optimal seating arrangements, a cozy fireplace and wall-to-wall windows overlooking the porch, the space exudes comfort, and the modern beams, with one of them serving as a 35-foot steel support beam, add a touch of elegance to the room.

What are the three most important questions homeowners should ask a roofer when considering a roof replacement?
1. Start by asking your contractor about the different roofing materials available. Options such as asphalt, cedar, slate or synthetic materials vary in lifespan, cost and maintenance requirements. Understanding these factors will help you make a decision that aligns with your needs and budget.
2. Since a roof is a significant investment, choose one that you’ll love for years to come. Take the time to explore various styles and materials that interest you, and discuss their pros and cons with your roofing expert.
3. Be sure to review the product warranty carefully. A strong warranty offers long-term protection, ensuring that you’re covered in case any issues arise after installation.

Customers revel in Sota’s unexpected taste combinations.
TASTEMAKERS — Written by Hailey Almsted
Imagine your favorite icecold soda transformed into a uniquely delectable treat—that’s exactly what you get at Sota. The Maple Grove shop is one of the first “dirty soda” shops in Minnesota, and owner Chad Taylor says he’s blown away by how happy it’s made customers. But what is a dirty soda?
“It’s taking your favorite fountain drink … and adding crunchable pebble ice, syrups, purees or creams that make it really special,” Taylor says. The dirty soda concept has been popular in the western United States, particularly Utah, for more than a decade, and although some might feel off-put by the thought of these additions, Taylor compares a dirty soda to an Italian soda. “They’ve known in Italy that cream and carbonation make fun mixtures, so it’s worth trying out,” he says.
Taylor, who has family in the western U.S. and has long
enjoyed dirty soda, wondered why the beverage wasn’t popular in the Midwest; he started Sota after encouragement from his wife, Joan. Last summer, Taylor opened the Sota food truck, and it quickly morphed into its first brick-and-mortar location that opened in December of last year. “Within a few weeks, there were people waiting outside in [10 degrees below zero],” Taylor recalls.
The beverage lineup includes fan-favorite sodas, such as cola, root beer and citrus, orange and pepper sodas, as well as still or sparkling water and lemonade. Mix-ins include cream, pebble ice, purees, syrups and optional natural energy shots. All of the drinks are named after ’90s songs. “My wife and I [are] children of the ’90s, and I love music, so if I could infuse my passion here … I might as well be naming the drinks after ’90s songs,” Taylor says.
Alongside its standing menu,
the Sota team creates weekly flavors. “It’s a collaborative effort. Some are flavors I’ve been wanting to try, sometimes the team plays around in the shop or sometimes our fans pitch ideas,” Taylor says. Some weekly drops are so popular that they’re made into a permanent addition on the menu.
Taylor says Maple Grove and the larger Metro area has shown up in a big way for Sota. “The response keeps growing and growing, and we’re really humbled that the bulk of our growth has been by word of mouth,” he says. Nearly a year after opening, Sota still experiences weekend wait times of up to an hour. It has been so overwhelmingly positive that Sota welcomed its second location in St. Louis Park’s West End in June and its third in Edina’s Southdale Center in July. “If anyone deserves ice cold drinks, it’s the ice cold tundra,” Taylor says.
Although more than 50 percent of drinks that go out the door are made with pepper soda, owner Chad Taylor says the vast menu has something for everyone. Here are just a few drinks on the menu.
» 1979: cola with vanilla, fresh lime and coconut cream (at left)
» Barbie Girl: still or sparkling water with strawberries, coconut and strawberry puree
» Everything Zen: citrus soda with passion fruit, blue raspberry and fresh lemon (page 34)
» Juicy: orange soda with vanilla, cream and an orange wedge
» Satellite: root beer with toasted marshmallow and cream
» Stacy’s Mom: pepper soda with cherry, vanilla and cream
» The Rain: citrus soda with blue raspberry, vanilla and raspberry puree
Sota is dedicated to giving back to the local community, something that owner Chad Taylor says has always been a part of the plan. “I’ve been lucky to be a part of companies that give back my whole life,” he says. “This is something we knew, from the beginning, that we wanted to do even when we weren’t making a profit.”
Taylor explains that Sota Serves was created to ensure that Sota is giving back each year through fundraisers, donating gift cards or raffle baskets, or other integrations within the community. Last winter, its Holiday Helper Giveaway encouraged customers to nominate someone who could use extra magic to make the holiday sweeter. Sota has also partnered with local school districts and hospitals. “We’re still just a little guy, but we want to be able to give back,” Taylor says.

Hospitality isn’t something just found at home. For Biaggi’s, it’s what has made the casual Italian restaurant a success with diners in Maple Grove since 2004.
As many diners know, Biaggi’s offers an extensive selection of house-made and imported pastas, soups and salad, pizza, seafood, steaks and desserts. Affordably-priced menu selections are prepared in the scratch kitchen with the freshest ingredients available. “We believe that we provide guests with a great value by delivering on a dining experience that includes great food, service and ambiance,” says Amy Goddard, director of marketing. “We work very hard to ensure that we’re providing guests with a consistently exceptional experience.”
While the food and atmosphere are certainly a draw, Biaggi’s in the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes is led by Gary Chanen, longtime managing partner, who relishes in creating an unmatched dining experience. “Gary is very much a people person and has always loved the service industry because it allows him to connect with guests and make people happy,” Goddard says. “When you see Gary interact with guests in the restaurant, it’s obvious that he has a passion for hospitality.”
While Gary can often be found in the restaurant, his presence in the community is just as consistent. “He understands that the success of the restaurant relies heavily on a thriving community, and he is very committed to ensuring that he’s doing what he can to support local initiatives,” Goddard says.
Biaggi’s regularly donates to various local organizations, including athletic teams, churches, schools and service organizations, including the Rotary Club of Maple Grove. “Whether it’s an auction item for a fundraiser or food for an event, we’re proud to support community organizations,” Goddard says. “It’s an important part of being a partner in the growth and success of the community.”

FOCUS ON MAPLE GROVE
“I had seen the same egret on two separate visits to the reserve … Every time I raised my camera to take its photo, the egret would fly away,” says wildlife photographer Esmail Harunany. After crawling out of sight on the third trip, Harunany was finally successful. “I took my chance while the bird was engrossed in its hunt … I love how it’s delicately poised, yet so quick while grabbing a fish from the pond,” Harunany says. —Emma Souza
