Summertime brings out the best of the best, don’t you think? Readers, it’s a sweet treat to bring you the créme de la créme in our Best of Maple Grove 2025—and we have it all, including your picks for the best businesses, restaurants, service providers, shops and more.

You voted online in January when the Readers’ Choice Poll went live and were treated to the finalists in March on our website. And finally—it’s time to meet your winners and runners-up in the Best of Maple Grove on page 15. Don’t forget to bookmark the spots you’re eagerly waiting to visit and keep this issue handy for whenever inspiration strikes.

Speaking of inspiration, Maple Grove is proud to be home to many celebrated athletes. In my Editor’s Picks on page 20, I chat with Olympian Alasan Ann, youth tennis player Daniela Del Mastro and Adam Spurell, head coach of the Maple Grove Crimson football team, about becoming the best in their sports. And trust me when I say they all share what it takes to be motivated and decorated players. Plus, Minnesota Vikings Fan of the Year Betsy Fine shares an inside look at the honor and her time at Super Bowl LIX.

But wait—there’s more! Our annual Focus on Maple Grove photo contest is open July 1 through 5 p.m. August 31. Submit your snapshots of our wonderful community—from scenic spots and local wildlife to your own pets and activities—by visiting maplegrovemag.com.

Revel in all that summer brings—and don’t forget to mark your calendars for January 1, 2026, when our next Best of Maple Grove commences.

Cheers!

BEST OF FAQS

While the voting is complete, and the numbers are tallied, there might be a few questions when it comes to how our annual Readers’ Choice Poll operates— before, during and after all is said and done.

Let’s start here. Voting ran online the month of January with three rules*:

• One entry was allowed per person; each ballot needed to include an email address.

• Voters needed to vote in at least five categories to ensure their ballot was counted.

• Ballots must have been completed by 5 p.m. January 31.

*Any rule not adhered to may have resulted in entire entries being discarded, and all results were subject to editorial discretion.

FAQs

How are the categories chosen?

Each year, our teams evaluate the categories to ensure our poll is reflective of our local businesses and is in tune with our readership’s interests and suggestions—all while providing relevant and engaging content.

How does vote tallying work?

Once the poll closed and the votes were validated, tabulators determined which businesses or locations were the top three (There were ties!) vote-getters.

What’s a finalist vs. a winner?

The top three vote-getters in each category became finalists and were announced in March on our website. (Our team fact-checked the address and contact information for each finalist. If a finalist was no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., the next highest vote-getter(s) moved up to become a finalist.) The top vote-getter is the winner and is announced in this issue and on our website, starting July 1.

Can a business or organization be a finalist if it’s located outside of the magazine’s coverage area?

Absolutely. In order to qualify, each business or organization must be located in the community and/or provide services to local residents.

How can a business get on next year’s ballot? Encourage clients or customers to vote for your business in our next Readers’ Choice Poll, which goes live on our website on January 1, 2026.

I’m a winner! How do I purchase a framed cover? Winners can request a free digital copy of the Best of Maple Grove cover design, which also indicates the winning category and the business’s or organization’s name. Winners can purchase a framed award certificate, which is 14x17 inches and features a black, wood frame. The cost is $150 per item, including shipping and handling, and can be ordered at localmedia.co/bestofwinner. —Editorial Staff

STYLE

The Hottest Style Trends of 2025

This year, Maple Grove’s fashion scene is buzzing with the best of the best! Here are my top five Pineapple Picks for your wardrobe.

1. Espresso: This year, embrace the rich shades of espresso brown. Not only is this shade of brown the Pantone Color of the Year (Mocha Mousse), but it’s also a timeless addition to any wardrobe.

2. Fabulous Florals: These classic patterns in sheer fabrics add a touch of whimsy to your style, ensuring you’ll be on trend for the remainder of the year.

3. Leopard Print: Here’s a classic that’s back in the spotlight! And don’t shy away from bold pieces like leopard print on denim.

4. Mixing Athleisure and Casual Everyday Wear: Mix your sporty pieces, like tank tops, with everyday blazers for an edgy look. Or think leggings paired with a trench coat and sneakers and ball cap— a stylish yet practical choice for errands.

5. Modern Workwear: As we transition back to the office, keeping tailored styles in mind is important. Update your work wardrobe with fun printed blazers or lightweight sweaters for a modern twist on office wear.

Hopelessly Devoted to the Stage

Dayle Theisen stars as Sandy in Grease .

Grease: The first musical that made Dayle Theisen want to do musical theater. So it’s perfectly apropos that the Maple Grove native would one day find herself in the role of Sandy.

“I watched it hundreds of times,” Theisen says of the movie, starring Olivia Newton-John as a newcomer to Rydell High in the 1950s. “It is such a special, nostalgic, important piece in my theater journey.”

Theisen was cast as the female lead in Chanhassen Dinner Theatres’ (CDT) production of Grease late last year after a successful run as a swing in CDT’s White Christmas

Theisen auditioned for the role of Sandy, unsure if she would receive the part. “My heart wasn’t set on it, but I knew it would be an incredible opportunity," she says.

Kris Howland, director of public

relations for CDT, says Theisen proved her worth during the winter run of White Christmas. “Dayle is a versatile performer—great singer, dancer and actor,” Howland says. “A swing has to be ready to go in for any one of a number of multiple female characters at a moment’s notice ... The swing has to know everyone’s lines and unique dance tracks. When you think about it, that is probably the scariest responsibility there is.”

Now, Theisen is responsible for bringing Sandy to life. “[She] is the quintessential Sandy,” Howland says. “She has the perfect amount of sweet, paired with the perfect amount of sass.”

While it’s a tall task, Theisen was up for the challenge. “There is so much pressure to make it similar to the movie,” she says. “But you have to listen to what the script tells you. I’m not trying to imitate Olivia Newton-John. I have to trust my instincts.”

Theisen has been building up those instincts since she started dancing at age 9. “I remember not wanting to ever stop dancing,” she says.

From dance, it was a natural leap to singing and acting, and during her sophomore year at Maple Grove Senior High School, Theisen was cast as the lead in the school’s production of Cinderella.

By the time she graduated in 2017, Theisen hadn’t kicked her love of the stage, so she took a leap of faith and set sail for the Chicago College of Performing Arts where she earned a BFA in musical theater with a dance emphasis. “I really found myself,” she says.

It’s that experience that Theisen brings to Sandy in Grease. “The understanding is that she is a young woman, trying to figure herself out under a new set of circumstances,” Theisen says. “She wants to do what’s right. She’s really

come into her own as a woman.”

“Director Michael Brindisi took an ever-so-slightly modern-day approach to the characters of Danny and Sandy at the end scene,” Howland says. Brindisi unexpectedly passed away in February, and CDT honored him with a tribute attended by nearly 700 people that ended with the cast singing We Go Together. Howland says of Brindi’s approach, “Audiences might not even notice, but Danny meets Sandy halfway. Sandy doesn’t have to compromise herself to make Danny like her. Sandy is a strong female character in her own right.”

Grease is showing through October 4.

Pages Across Continents

Zia McNeal’s book celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Books transport readers to different lifestyles, time periods or, for local author Zia McNeal, across continents. Her novel, Number Eleven, tells a riveting story—inspired by her mother and father, Nusrat and Jhoma Merchant—of engagement and marriage in 1960s Bombay, now Mumbai, India.

McNeal’s path to writing was not a linear one. Prior to studying accounting in college, she kept several journals to document her life but never felt called to share her stories until hearing her parents’ story.

“My mom and dad had told me all these stories when I was growing up, which was so different from my Midwestern upbringing,” McNeal says. “I didn’t have a lot of Indian friends ... I thought my mom and dad’s story was so unique and different, and I wanted to capture that.”

A first-generation Indian American, McNeal cites both her parents as inspiration for the book. “It’s a story not just of my mom but a story of my mom and my dad,” she says. “They both had to … get to a point and a place in their minds and in their hearts to be open to somebody who they did not really plan to marry.”

In order to properly tell their story, she had to completely immerse herself within it. “For six months, I lived, basically, in their world,” she says. “When I was done, it was like, ‘OK, what happened to the last six months of my life?’”

Besides for her writing, McNeal has also been featured in Maple Grove Magazine for her baking. “I think everyone needs a creative outlet,” she says. “Baking, I think, brings me more immediate joy … writing takes a lot out of me because it’s not something I’m trained [to do]. As an accountant by my college degree, writing is like the other half of my brain … so it was more difficult, but I also found it to be more rewarding.” (Read more about McNeal’s baking at maplegrovemag.com.)

Number Eleven has been especially pertinent for the local bookish community, most notably for the Maple Grove Women of Today. Founded in 1950, Women of Today is an organization that focuses on community service, professional growth and fellowship for women ages 18 and older A member of the Maple Grove chapter read Number Eleven and recommended it to the chapter book club.

“Reading from a local author was very exciting,” says Sue Jammes, the book

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Maple Grove resident Zia McNeal’s first novel, inspired by her parents’ engagement and marriage in 1960s India.

club’s leader. “When we reached out to Zia and she agreed to attend our meet ing, we were overjoyed.”

McNeal and her mother attracted a crowd so large that Jammes had to reserve a separate room in addition to her apart ment space to accommodate the overflow.

“Nusrat absolutely captivated the audi ence,” Jammes says. “Both she and Zia wore traditional sarees that were abso lutely beautiful. They also brought beau tiful fabrics and novelties from their time in India to share with us.”

McNeal plans to produce a sequel although there are still some needed plot changes before the drafting process begins. “I want to tell the sequel story, but … my mother has a couple of ‘no-nos’— some of the family secrets,” she says. “And I need a better ending than what I’ve got in my mind right now … so I just need to get to that point.”

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Number Eleven a special promotion for the rest of the year: $20 paperback signed and mailed; $30 hardcover signed and mailed. Interested customers can contact ziamcneal11@gmail.com.

Broman Chiropractic offers expert, progressive patient care.

Since being founded in 1987 by Dr. Doug Broman, Broman Chiropractic & Wellness Center has stayed true to its mission to empower individuals to achieve optimal health and wellness through personalized treatment. “We are dedicated to restoring function, alleviating pain, promoting holistic wellbeing and fostering a community where everyone can thrive,” Dr. Doug says.

Broman Chiropractic offers chiropractic care, clinical massage therapy and acupuncture services, but there’s more that patients can expect. “Our vision is to be a leading chiropractic and wellness practice, recognized for excellence in patient care, education and empowerment,” Dr. Paul Broman says. The community is taking notice of the practice, being named Best Chiropractic Practice in the Best of Maple Grove readers’ choice poll (2014-2024). “We aspire to create a world where proactive health management is accessible to all, inspiring a movement toward lasting wellness and vitality.”

That vision is brought to bear as Drs. Doug and Paul (father and son) have worked together since Dr. Paul graduated in 2015. The duo has grown the practice to include four chiropractors and two massage therapists. And Broman Chiropractic welcomes Dr. Ibolya Konkoly, the team’s newest

member, who received her undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and doctorate from Northeastern Health Sciences University.

One could say Dr. Ibolya was always meant to have a career in chiropractic care. “Early in high school, I found that I loved working with others, making an impact on their health,” she says. “I was fueled by wanting to optimize life. My own experience with chronic illness strengthens my excitement for alternative and holistic care.”

Throughout chiropractic school, Dr. Ibolya was encouraged by her own keen interest in broadening her education by learning more about applied kinesiology and its powerful role in chiropractic care. “I have attended a variety of functional medicine and chiropractic technique seminars, bringing a variety of tools to my treatment. I want to help balance the structure of our bodies to uncover and optimize the health you already possess.”

GOING FOR THE GOLD

’Tis the season for celebrating champions. Written by Hailey Almsted

This last year has been a whirlwind for Maple Grove athletes. From global stages to the roar of local football stadiums, these extraordinary athletes have proven themselves to be among the best in their sport.

In this, our Best of Maple Grove issue, it seems fitting to celebrate a few of those who are the best in their sport, representing Maple Grove near and far. Join me as I catch up with these remarkable athletes and reflect on their road to success. After all, their achievements inspire not only the next generation of athletes but also the community that takes pride in their excellence.

A TRUE TESTAMENT

From the mats at Grandmaster Lee’s World Taekwondo Academy to the cheers of Paris, Maple Grove’s Alasan Ann reveled in the journey to the Olympic Games Paris in 2024. Ann recalls stepping onto the Olympic stage as electric. “I felt my body tingling. It was insane, and the feeling of everyone cheering as I walked out onto the stage, especially for taekwondo, [it was an] unforgettable experience,” he says. Ann originally appeared in our July/August 2024 issue; at the time, he said, “It’s an honor to be able to compete. I’m excited to show what I can do.” And show his talent he did. Although Ann didn’t bring home a medal from his first Olympic games, the experience was thrilling—and he says he is “gunning” to make it to the Olympic Games Los Angeles in 2028.

In recalling his time in Paris, he adds, “When coach and I were in the waiting area right before my walkout, I remembered when I was at my first national win, waiting in the holding area before my final match just sitting there with my coach and the other coaches of the team, eating before my last fight. [It’s] a memory of how far I’ve come.” Visit maplegrovemag.com to read Alasan Ann Makes History at the Paris Olympics

MAKING MOVES

At just 14 years old, Daniela Del Mastro has her eye on the prize. Since we last spoke with Daniela in our September/ October 2024 issue, she has played tennis around the world. She was selected to represent Team USA in America’s Cup at USTA (United States Tennis Association) National Campus in Florida, where the team defeated Canada, Mexico and the South American Federation. She was one of four who qualified for Les Petits As in France, which hosts the top 13U players in the world. Daniela was the consolation singles champion and made it to the semifinals in doubles; as a part of that trip, she participated in an event in England, making it to semifinals in singles and winning the doubles title. In March, she won the FILA Easter Bowl 14U Singles

USTA National Spring Championship held in California.

“It was an honor to represent my country,” Daniela says. “I had so much fun bonding with my teammates and experiencing Europe together.”

Daniela continues to work hard on her game—both physically and mentally. “I meet with a sports psychologist and that helps a lot with pressure, expectations and the emotions of wins and losses,” she says, noting that learning to live away from home, fueling herself nutritionally and preparing for matches has been a learning experience.

As for Daniela’s tennis future, she has her end goal in sight. “My goal is to improve every single day,” she says. “I know that losing is a part of eventual success, and I always

STAYING POWER

Last November, Maple Grove Senior High School head football coach Adam Spurrell led the Crimson to an undefeated season, ultimately claiming the Minnesota State Championship, and he says they’re ready for next year.

In the off-season, Spurrell has seen a record number of students at the 5:50 a.m. workouts. “We have many young men who are competing in other sports and are becoming better athletes each day,” he says. “It’s been awesome to watch the players progress to this point.”

Their previous success is a reminder to stay focused on new challenges. “Each team is their own identity,” he says,

noting that they try to create a championship mindset among players. He adds that recent players have served as incredible role models, and he knows the current senior group will continue to do so. “I know that we have a strong culture already built, and we have players, coaches and families that love being a part of this Crimson family and are ready to go on the next journey,” he says—and on to the next season they go.

CELEBRATING BIG AT SUPER BOWL LIX

When Betsy Fine, a teacher at Weaver Lake and Rush Creek elementary schools, exited the building one day in November, she received the surprise of a lifetime. “I knew that the 60 purple, yellow and white balloons, and Viktor, the mascot, were legit,” Fine says of her being honored as the Minnesota Vikings Fan of the Year. “Immediately, I felt a bit undeserving but very, very grateful for what my daughter, Abbi, had done, and all of the people that came together to make the award a reality.”

Fine’s grandfather, Bill Shaller, was an original bondholder in 1961, and Vikings season tickets have been in the family since. Although Fine began reluctantly watching the Sunday games (“I could either learn the game … or be banished to my bedroom,” she says.) she now says, “Being a Vikings fan is a way of life for me.”

Fine’s nomination was selected out of 400 applications due to her devotion to the team and her 35-year tenure as a public educator. As a part of the recognition, Fine and Abbi were invited to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, where they attended the big game and the NFL Honors event, standing on the red carpet and talking to and taking selfies with Vikings players and reporters.

TAKE A DIP

Brighten up gatherings with fresh takes on appetizing spreads.

If there’s one thing Minnesotans do best, it’s summer get-togethers. Whether your party finds its rhythm lakeside, poolside or on a sun-soaked patio, there’s one appetizer that’s sure to be on the menu: dip. No bowl o’ chips, charcuterie board or crudité platter is complete without a flavorful dip. Simple to make and a versatile addition to the appetizer table, a quality dip is sure to get more repeat customers than the main course. For complete recipes, visit maplegrovemag.com.

Layered Taco Dip

I first tried this recipe when my mother-inlaw, Janice Jorenby, made it one summer evening. With five layers, it brings together all the best flavors of a taco into one delicious dip. It’s perfect for summer gettogethers, a day on the water or a picnic spread. This dip pairs wonderfully with— you guessed it!—tortilla chips, but why not try something different? Pita chips or naan bread would make delightful partners to this recipe. —Hailey Almsted, managing editor and editor of Maple Grove and Woodbury magazines

• 8 oz. cream cheese (Avoid low-fat cream cheese.)

• 2–4 Tbsp. taco sauce, to taste

• 1 cup iceberg lettuce, chopped

• 4 roma tomatoes, diced

• 2 jalapeño peppers, sliced, optional

• shredded Mexican cheese, to taste

Warm cream cheese until it’s soft and spreadable. Pour taco sauce of choice into the softened cream cheese. Mix to combine. Spread mixture around on a pie plate. Refrigerate for at least one hour (or until it’s cool). Top with lettuce, tomatoes and jalapeño (if desired) and Mexican cheese. Serve.

Dairy-Free Spinach Dip

I adapted this recipe from the Alternative Spinach Dip in Didi Emmons’ excellent cookbook, Entertaining for a Veggie Planet, when I had to (begrudgingly) give up dairy. Don’t be intimidated by the tofu—you won’t even know it’s there, and it adds a wonderful protein boost. This dip is fabulous with veggies, crackers or bread, and I love using leftovers as a sandwich spread. —Liz Potasek, editor of Cities South Magazine Collection

Curry Veggie Dip

This veggie dip has become a mainstay at all Kopiecki family gatherings. The Madras curry powder adds the perfect zip without the heat, making it ideal for even those milder Minnesotan palates. I serve it up with baby carrots, cauliflower, celery, English cucumbers, radishes and snap peas. It’s also been known to make an appearance on burgers when the grill gets going. —Madeline Kopiecki, digital editor and editor of Plymouth Magazine

Miso White Bean Hummus With Chimichurri

This recipe is on the weekly rotation at our home. My husband is allergic to chickpeas, and cannellini (white) beans are a beautiful alternative. In the spring and summer, we love experimenting with new toppings—here, chimichurri features abundant summer herbs for a bright, elevated party treat. Serve with fresh pita or pita chips. —Zoe Yates, editor of St. Croix Valley and White Bear Lake magazines

Ruby’s No-Fuss Green Chutney

After moving to Canada from India, my mother missed the tastes of home, so she turned to a recipe book my grandmother had given her before she left Mumbai. But the recipes were too complicated, so she devised a quick chutney recipe. This can be used as a dip with naan chips, as a sandwich spread or placed on top of a salmon fillet, tightly wrapped in foil and baked at 350 F for an hour. —Feroza Mehta, editor of Edina Magazine

Sun-Dried Tomato Dip

This recipe falls into the oldie but a goodie category, since it’s been in my nibbles repertoire for as long as I can remember. I don’t think sun-dried tomatoes get their due, so I happily feature them whenever a recipe needs some depth of flavor. Additionally, this recipe has weight to it, meaning you can use a dipping vehicle of your choice: Chips, crackers or crudités can equally carry this dip from plate to palate without a hitch. —Renée Stewart-Hester, managing creative director and editor of Lake Minnetonka Magazine

TO SKATE

Central Park opens its skating loop for another summer of fun.

Are you looking for a fun way to get some exercise this summer? The Central Park roller skating loop is here to deliver. Sitting at over 800 feet long and 20 feet wide, the rink—which mainly functions as an ice skating loop in the winter—opens from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily throughout summer. Additionally, lights and food options will be offered around the rink. And if you don’t happen to own a pair of skates, there’s no need to worry—on July 18 and August 15, rentals are available from 6–8 p.m. “Twin Cities Skaters comes with plenty of skates in all sizes for people to borrow for free,” says Roee Hecht, recreation coordinator for the City of Maple Grove Parks and Recreation. Twin Cities Skaters is an organization that offers mobile events and roller skating services to rinks around the Metro for beginners and experts alike. —Emma Souza
