n addition to being the focus of this month’s issue, what do kids, families, seniors and pets have in common? If you’re anything like me, you take (lots!) of photos of them all.

On page 32, I write about an interesting interview I had with local photographer Emily John.

The article covers several topics when it comes to photography, and they all resonated with me in one way or another. One of the discussion points circulated around what photos of late loved ones can tell us about our familial histories, and it got me thinking—and looking around my home.

My home office includes several photographs. Among them is a black and white image of my maternal grandparents. Grandma’s billowy white blouse is neatly tucked into a high-waisted skirt.

Some of her hair escapes from a tidy bun at the nape of her neck. (This is an unfamiliar look as I never recall seeing her finger-waved hair ever out of place.) Grandpa—a proud Dutchman in soul and stance—stands next to her with both arms tucked behind his back, hands resting on his lower back— similar to how I often catch sight of my own sons. (Posture can certainly be inherited!)

From what I can tell, the photo is from early in their relationship. They look carefree, in love and at ease in each other’s presence. It offers me a little glimpse into their relationship that I would never have seen without this picture. It’s the “before.” Before World War II called for them to plant a victory garden and endure financial sacrifices. Before a train on a foggy morning claimed one of their children’s lives. Before joy and other sorrows conspired to create their destinies in smalltown Minnesota. Before I was born and old enough to begin developing my own tender impressions of them. And it’s important to see those “befores” captured in images.

The article also highlights photographing loved ones engaging in something they love or enjoy.

Last Christmas, one of our children asked me for copies of my Christmas cookie recipes. (To say I make hundreds of Christmas cookies is not an overstatement.) I will send the recipes off, certainly, but it won’t be through an email. I’ll write them out. There’s something worth treasuring when reading a recipe penned in a loved one’s handwriting.

A few of my family’s favorite Christmas cookies are a bit labor intensive, and I want someone to photograph me and my husband (my baking sous-chef of sorts), rolling out the layered ingredients, creating tight spirals of dough and decorating tiny holiday wreaths. I hope our children, grandchildren and beyond treasure photos of our floured hands—stained with food coloring, our wedding rings caked in dough and our faces decorated in joy.

The Spice of Life While cleaning out my spice cabinet, I came across more than a few bottles of lesserused, but once-treasured seasonings. Turmeric, cloves, cumin, coriander, cardamom, sumac and fennel were each purchased for a reason before being buried far back on my shelves. I set about to organize my stash of spices and use them up—singly, in combination and as many as possible.

What came about was some of the most satisfying and healing food I’ve made and enjoyed in quite a long time, including something altogether mixed up that I didn’t know what to call other than Mediterranean Nachos.

Mediterranean Nachos • ½ cup chopped yellow onion • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced • 1 lb. ground lamb • kosher salt and freshly ground Kowalski’s black peppercorns, to taste • 1 tsp. Kowalski’s organic ground cumin • ½ tsp. Kowalski’s ground cinnamon • ½ tsp. Kowalski’s ground ginger • ¼ tsp. Kowalski’s ground turmeric • 1 pinch Kowalski’s ground cloves • ⅓ cup dry white wine • 8 oz. Kowalski’s original hummus • Kowalski’s extra virgin olive oil, golden raisins, lemon zest, toasted pine nuts, finely chopped fresh cilantro and Kowalski’s Za’atar (from the Spice Aisle) for garnish • Kowalski’s pita crackers or Kowalski’s naan for serving In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sauté onion until tender. Add garlic, cook and stir until softened and fragrant. Add lamb, cook and crumble until meat is no longer pink.

Drain fat from meat, and season with salt and pepper. Add spices (through cloves), cook and stir for one minute. Deglaze pan with wine, and cook until wine is evaporated.

Remove from heat. Scoop hummus into a shallow dish. Top with meat mixture, drizzle with oil and sprinkle with other garnishes as desired. Serve with pita crackers or naan.

They say necessity is the mother of invention, so the Stoddards came up with a solution—the Doggy Bunk Bed, which is an elevated dog bed that sits on the foot of the human bed. According to the Sleep Foundation, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that sleeping with a pet can offer extra benefits. Apart from getting good vibes from a nearby pet, a study of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder with service dogs noted 57 percent of respondents said their dog helped ease their nightmare problems.

Another benefit can be improved mental health. “Positively interacting with a dog increases oxytocin levels in adults and reduces cortisol levels in children. [Those levels are associated with relaxation and stress reduction],” the foundation’s website says.

Immunity benefits, too. The foundation's website says, “... research shows that petting a dog increases an immune response, so the close contact of sharing a sleeping space may benefit the immune system ...”

Improved health is another stated benefit. “Owning a dog is correlated to a reduced risk of death ...” the foundation says. “Early research on this topic found that petting dogs, in particular, reduces blood pressure and heart rate.

If touching your pet is part of the key to gaining health benefits, cuddling up together at night might help.”

As with most things in life, there is a caveat. The foundation cautions: While sleeping with pets has benefits, there are potential risks. Check with your health care provider and veterinarian for the best way to spend time with your pet.

Little Kids, Big Feelings Workbook helps children process their anger.

AFTER 12 YEARS practicing as a mental health clinician specializing in children, Christina Kress says she noticed a lot of parents were bringing their children to Minnetonka Counseling with the same dilemma: Their children didn’t know how to process their anger.

Kress drew on her experience with past patients, as well as her background in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), to author The Anger Workbook for Kids: Fun DBT Activities to Help You Deal with Big Feelings and Get Along with Others, which aims to help 7 to 12 year olds learn to pro-

cess the complex emotion of anger.

“One size doesn’t fit all, necessarily,” Kress says when describing the workbook’s strategies. “A lot of the activities in the book are things I’ve done directly with clients before. [That’s something] I really like about the book too because it means I know it has worked before, and kids are going to be able to use it.”

Kress says kids don’t learn by repeatedly being told what to do; they learn by trying and practicing. All the activities have an “apply it to real life” component that kids can try at home or

school. “It might be like, ‘Here’s a way to try managing your anger, now go and practice it three times and write down on the worksheet what you noticed happened,’” Kress says. “Encouraging the kids to practice is very important.”

Many of the activities in the workbook derive from the “B” or “behavioral” aspect of DBT, asking kids to analyze the behavior of both themselves and others.

“We all get into states of mind where our emotions are in charge. That’s called emotional mind,” Kress says. “And then we all get into a place where we’re not

Model: Kress says that being a good role model for your kids is one of the first things she recommends. “That can mean talking or describing out loud what’s going on inside of [your head] as an adult. Like, ‘Oh, I’m so frustrated!

We’re going to be late!’” Kress says, adding that addressing these emotions out loud helps kids see that they’re a normal part of human experience.

Label: “Name it to tame it” is a phrase coined by psychologist Daniel Siegel that Kress employs, too. “There’s a lot of research that supports just naming an emotion can start to help reverse the effects of it,” Kress says.

Listen: Kress says it’s also important to keep in mind that kids are still developing emotional intelligence and oftentimes don’t process their emotions as quickly as adults. “I think that it’s much more helpful to kids when the adults can start by listening to what’s going on before they move into the learning phase,” Kress says. “They can start with listening and validating.”

Ideally, Kress says, we should aim for something in the middle, a balance.

Kress says this is because parental guidance is a key aspect of success. “Kids that are really angry, they’re scared,” she says. “They don’t know why they’re so angry, so they need a parent or an adult to explain to them what’s going on … It doesn’t come naturally to every kid how to manage their emotions.”

SOME KIDS DREAM ABOUT growing up and moving across the country to make movies. While these dreams don’t always become a reality, former Minnetonka resident Alia Tarraf made it happen.

Tarraf called Minnetonka home for most of her childhood and graduated from Minnetonka High School. The former Skipper now works for Disney in Los Angeles. Her dream to make movies began to take shape when she was a student at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

After graduation, she moved to New York City to become an independent filmmaker. “I realized there’s not a lot of money in independent filmmaking, especially in New York,” she says. “I saw there were a lot more opportunities in Los Angeles.”

She moved to Los Angeles in 2009 and eventually landed a studio production job with Disney in 2011.

While Tarraf gains a lot of inspiration through her work, it was a friend and coworker who impacted her latest and most personal project.

Her friend Allison Wilke Gryphon passed away in 2016 after a battle with breast cancer. Being a filmmaker herself, she documented her journey with cancer through short vlogs. Tarraf and Mary Beth Gentle found the videos and decided to do something with them, so they cre-

ated A Hidden Star, a documentary about the grief surrounding the friend’s death and the journey of bringing her ashes to Ireland. “It’s a mix between our journey through grief and the home videos our friend made,” Tarraf says.

Tarraf produced and co-directed the project with Gentle. They were able to work on the project while still working for Disney. They’re currently looking for a distribution platform for the film, but it was shown at the Twin Cities Film Festival (2021), the Vail Film Festival (2021) and the Red Dirt Film Festival in Oklahoma in April. “It was wonderful to get to show it [A Hidden Star] in my home state,” Tarraf says.

While the film deals with loss due to an illness, grief is a universal theme, and it could resonate with a lot of viewers.

“With the pandemic, a lot of people are dealing with grief, so A Hidden Star can be a tough watch,” Tarraf says. “But the ending is full of hope.”

What’s next? Tarraf is hard at work on some other projects that she can’t talk about quite yet. While she is excited about them, she has her eye on a dream project, hoping to someday direct a fictional film with one of her favorite actresses. “I would love to direct Emma Thompson,” Tarraf says. “I just love her.”

Take to the sky, and you’ll never know who or what you’ll meet. “I’ve had eagles off my wing, just checking me out,” Alex Peterson says. “Actually, they’re really good guides. On one flight, I met three turkey vultures at 500 feet. I sailed and soared with them until we reached 15,000 feet.”

He is easy to identify; his pickup truck is rigged up with a 6,000-foot spool of line that is mounted on what looks like an aluminum winch—all used to hoist paragliders up, up and away.

Wait a minute; you can paraglide in Minnesota? When the sport comes to mind, one often thinks of paragliders launching themselves from picturesque mountains and hilltops or other highelevation vistas. “I would guess that 99.9 percent of Minnesotans would say you can’t [paraglide in these parts], but you can and we’ve been doing it for years,” Peterson says.

In fact, Peterson has some 11,000 paragliding flights under his safety belt.

In a Great Plains state like Minnesota, paragliders are mostly towed into the air. “If there’s no wind, the pull might be two miles,” Peterson says. “If there is a wind, it’s about a mile.” It goes without saying that the pull (via a truck) has to be unobstructed. “No wires or power lines,” he says.

detached. “You’re on your own,” he says.

Like hawks and eagles, paragliders seek out thermal air currents to soar. Peterson’s longest flight began in Watertown, Minnesota, and ended on Mille Lacs Lake, about 90 miles north.

That’s nothing. One of his friends started a flight in Mankato, Minnesota, and flew to Madison, Wisconsin. “That’s the fifthlongest flight in North America,” he says.

St. Paul’s David Dellanave was born in Italy but cut his paragliding chops with Peterson at SkyBrothers. While he learned the adventure sport in Minnesota, Dellanave also flies in Italy.

“In terms of the flying, it’s pretty much the same,” he says. “The only real difference is how you get up in the air. In Minnesota, you’re towed. In Italy, you fly off a mountain.” While the landscapes are vastly different, Dellanave counts the experiences as being similar. “They’re serene, they’re calm and they’re chill,” he says.

Vadnais Heights’ Craig Aasen was an accomplished skydiver, kiteboarder and kite skier when he learned to paraglide.

“The sensation of flight is the thing I do it for,” he says. One might even say that Aasen has always been inclined toward flight. When he was a kid, he would steal his mom’s bed sheets to use as a makeshift parachute. Instead of jumping out of planes, he jumped off a front yard maple tree. “[Paragliding] is the grown up version of that,” Aasen says. Does he ever get nervous? “I’m always nervous, but I learn things the right way,” he says. “I take lessons, and I talk to the right people.”

Speaking of nerves, Peterson says managing fear is 75 percent of his job.

“Ninety-five percent of my tandem flights are with people with zero paragliding experience. A lot of them start by saying there’s no way they can do this and finish saying it’s the coolest thing ever,” he says.

Burnsville’s Amy Aanenson decided to meet fear head on. “COVID-19 upped my anxiety levels, and, instead of living another fearful year, I was going to tax that fear,” she says. “I remember driving out to meet [Peterson]. After I got here, I remember thinking that I could still drive away.”

stayed and educated herself before taking to the air. “I talked to [Peterson], and I talked to the driver,” she says.

“I also talked to a couple first-timers, who were paragliding as part of their sobriety. Paragliding gave them that adrenaline rush they were looking for but in a healthier way.”

While Peterson enjoys the vicarious experience of helping and watching others take flight, he continues to cull his own experiences, flying as much as the weather allows. Thankfully, winter

doesn’t have to put the complete brakes on his endeavors, but there are limits.

“I tend to stay home when it gets below 10 degrees. At high altitudes, temperatures can get pretty extreme,” he says.

Regardless of the weather, Peterson holds a treasure-trove of memories—from flying over sand dunes in California (“You can cross a ridge and dip your toes in the sand,” he says.) to hiking up a mountain in Washington for a flight. “A paraglider is an airplane in a backpack,” he says. No reservations needed.

My first-ever tandem paragliding experience started with a preflight checklist. Were the straps buckled to the harness correctly and securely? Check. Was I wearing a helmet and was the chinstrap buckled? Check. Was the parachute onboard? I’ll admit that one gave me pause.

With the checklist items in order, we were set. With a backpack (loaded with said parachute) that doubled as a seat draped off my back, I stood in front of pilot Alex Peterson. The sail was behind him, and the tow operator sat in a pickup truck in front of us. A 2,000-foot line spooled in the back of the truck was attached to us and would be let out like line on a fishing reel.

Peterson instructed me to stand in place until the pull of the truck forced me off my mark.

“Keep running until you leave the ground, and don’t sit back until I tell you to,” he said. Lift off occurred maybe 10 yards after my first stride. This was awesome.

When we hit a certain altitude, Peterson had me protect my face with my left hand and sharply pull the lever on the harness with my right hand. The pulling action released the connection to the tow truck. I could see the end of the line float to ground as we sailed on, free as birds. This was awesome.

I didn’t hoot and holler like a few of his previous passengers but rather sailed in silence. With my head on a swivel, the wind hit my face colder and harder than expected. I had looked at a wind-

sock at ground level before we took off and wondered if there was enough wind to fly. In the air, I had opposite thoughts. Was the wind too strong?

We banked toward a beautiful sunset, and I took my phone out of my jacket pocket and took a few selfies. We were flying above Lake Minnetonka, yet I could see the Minneapolis skyline in the distance. People on the ice near Spirit Island, our take-off spot, looked like ants. Their trucks resembled toys.

We circled up to 1,200–1,300 feet and called it a trip. Upon landing, I was told to keep my feet up in the air. My seat hit the ground, and we skidded maybe a couple feet. My first paragliding experience was over; my second awaits. Awesome.

Photographs document significant moments in our lives—pregnancies, births and birthdays; first days of school and graduations; engagements and weddings; and others. But there can be a very important part of life that goes mostly undocumented. As we get older and our own major life events arrive less frequently, we tend to be relegated to only group photos or even step away from the camera shot altogether. How about rethinking that photographic narrative?

“The problem is that these events are all over by about age 35–40, and then we start to show physical signs of aging and think that we are now too old, too busy, too overweight or too this or that to pay for a professional photo,” says Emily John, owner of Emily John Photography in Excelsior. “I’d argue that it’s very important to get photographed because we age and are constantly changing in our physical appearance. Life doesn’t stop after the first 40 years and neither

should we stop celebrating the beauty of aging. It’s important to document your appearance not only for yourself, but also for all of the younger generations, who will look at this image as time goes on …”

John equates photographs with interactive timelines. “A photograph invites the viewer to become a part of that slice in time with you. Don’t wait another year or five years because it will never be a more perfect time than now to celebrate yourself,” she says.

John came to value photography at an early age and points to one of her grandmothers as an inspiration. “Every time I visited her house, I could see [photos] proudly displayed on all the walls, in albums stacked on the bookshelves and in prints tacked to the fridge,” she says.

“I know what all my aunts and uncles looked like as kids and that my dad had leg braces when he was 2. I knew stories of my family from before I was born because we’d look through albums

together … I remember her showing me photos of her mother, who had died when [my grandmother] was 23. Little did I know when she was telling me those stories that I would share in [my grandmother’s similar] fate, losing my mom to breast cancer when I was a senior in college. After my mom died, I visited my grandma a lot because it gave me comfort to know that I wasn’t alone in my experience. If I hadn’t seen those photos and asked to hear her stories, I might not have known this about her.”

While it’s not difficult to highlight the importance of having photographs taken throughout life, putting oneself in front of a lens isn’t always easy, but time can see things the present ignores or isn’t ready to view. “We are very critical of [photographs] at first but tend to really value and love them as time goes on,” John says. She recalls crying after seeing photographs of herself about six months after her first son was born. “I still had the baby weight, and my eyes

had bags under them for the lack of sleep … I thought I looked terrible. That was 11 years ago, and now when I see those photos of me, I see a totally different person.

I see a younger, vibrant version of myself, who’d just birthed and was successfully raising a little baby boy. I see myself before my gray hair and laugh lines set in. I see my favorite sweater I used to wear all the time and my glasses before I got [eye surgery]. When I see that photograph, I am flooded with the memories of that time in my life.”

While photographs tell a story of the subject at the time of the photo, John interestingly points out that they also highlight what the subject can’t know about the future. “[In a photograph], you see the subject as having lived this life up to the point the shutter was snapped, but then time stops for them,” she says. “They have no knowledge of the future beyond that point … There’s iconic images during World War II of men standing together smiling [prebattle] and, in that moment,

having no knowledge of what was about to happen. I recall an image of [a] little girl standing on her farmstead 50 years ago, and that same spot now houses a massive suburban development. Then there’s photograph of my mom, sitting in the grass holding out her hand to help me take my first steps, totally unaware that she would die of breast cancer only 20 years later at 44 years old. It’s a bittersweet reminder that life is finite.”

There are different avenues to taking those meaningful photographs. It’s a safe assumption that the vast majority of cellphone owners use the camera function more often than grabbing a digital or film camera. While convenient, there are outcome differences between phone and traditional cameras

and professional photography.

“I love that photography has become such an easy piece of life, and we are now able to document any and every detail on our phone,” John says. “But because of this commoditization, it’s easy to confuse a professionally-created photograph with a mass-produced digital file that pops up every once in a while on your Facebook feed.”

“These two things are about as different as a McDonald’s french fry and a celebratory anniversary dinner steak at Coalition,” John says. “You just can’t expect to get the same experience and product in a quick cellphone snap as you get when you hire a professional for a family heirloom that hangs above the sofa.”

Encouraging us to take or have images

taken of us throughout life is only the first step, according to John. “… What I’ve noticed is that most people are so busy that, even if they have the digital files, those photographs will never see the light of day,” she says. After realizing that more than 25 percent of her clients’ digital galleries were never downloaded for printing, she changed her business structure, becoming a print portrait studio. “I create artwork that is beautifully photographed, hand retouched and then displayed in homes on only the highest quality archival materials,” John says.

“I specialize in printed products because I believe that a photograph should live out here in the real world,” she says. “…

When you hold a photograph in your hands, it comes alive.”

TIPS FOR THE TAKING John has recommendations for the cellphone photographer. “First and foremost, hold your phone in your hand, look through the viewer and challenge yourself to take a photo that’s better than the last one,” she says.

Be your own photo editor, and consider what could make the photo better—zoom in or out, change your or the phone’s position, ask a subject a silly question to help relax his/her smile into a more authentic expression and more.

“When you start to notice what’s going on in the photos you take and start to think about how to make them better, you are engaging your creative mind,” John says. “Suddenly, a chore is turned into an engaging act of creativity. And being creative keeps us young and our minds sharp. When you develop that itch to take a better photograph, you might find yourself researching and experimenting and playing around with it. Photography can be really fun and a wonderful way to engage with the world around you.”

SIN C E 2 0 0 4 , artists from around the state and country have gathered to showcase their artistic acumen at the Wayzata Art Experience, organized by the Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce. The event is set from 10 a.m.–7 p.m. on June 25 and 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on June 26 along Lake Street between Broadway and Barry avenues.

Activities include a wide variety of artists, delicious food, drinks, sailboat rides and live music. Not only is it a fantastic opportunity to find your new, favorite one-of-a-kind art piece and enjoy outdoor dining, but it’s also a great way to support local artists, too.

Wine Sips and Charcuterie Bits Wineside is set to host the first self-serve wine bar in the west Metro.

serve wine dispensers are soon to be a thing in the west Metro thanks to Top Ten Liquors and its novel concept— Wineside. The Minneapolis chain of liquor stores has its eye on a September (at press time) opening of the ultimate high-end wine and cheese bar, restaurant, charcuterie market, grocery and liquor store in Minnetonka.

The updated space (formerly home to Champps across from Ridgedale Center) is designed creatively to feed customers through their journey of tasting wine and eating expertly-curated provisions.

of our business, which is to extend the experience of buying, enjoying and discovering wine with the perfect food pairings,” says Omar Torres, Top Ten Liquors’ vice president of marketing.

The casual interior design and concept gives Wineside the flexibility to go with the times, even unprecedented ones. This area of Minnetonka is seeing a high level of action as it transforms into an experiential locale, including more retail and dining businesses, residential options, expanding walkways and Ridgedale Commons Park.

Whether it’s morning coffee, lunchtime fare, dinner out or a glass of wine

with friends, Wineside intentionally created an unpretentious space that’s easy to navigate for guests. Here’s what to expect.

Self-serve Wine Tasting Wineside will provide an open space, ideal to sample wines from all over the world.

Customers can pour wine from dispensers placed throughout the store, becoming the first self-serve wine bar experience in the west Metro, allowing guests to taste from more than 100 bottles.

The volume of wine shouldn’t be a deterrent or fuel intimidation. Customers will be greeted by a hostess, who guides them through preloading a Wineside

Then it’s wine time. Customers can peruse sections organized by wine varieties, choose a wine of interest, insert the card, select the number of ounces desired to drink and pour a glass of the beverage of choice. Shoppers should take note of the wines enjoyed during the process, as they’ll be able to purchase them by the bottle at the adjacent liquor store.

(Wineside is working on an app to help in the process.)

In addition to information about each wine at the dispenser, wine leads will be available to help and share details about the wines’ origins and even illustrate why Wineside decided to include the varieties in its vast inventory. “It’s about giving our customers the opportunity to taste and to explain what they like to drink, so knowledgeable wine leads can help with their experience,” Torres says.

From the wine dispenser area, customers are able to bring their wine selections into the bar and restaurant for expertly curated pairings.

Bringing the customer experience home is an option, too. Some menu items and ingredients will be available to purchase in the grocery section. Like what you taste? Why not bring it home?

For those in the mood for something other than wine, Wineside can quench that, too. A small bar area for cocktails, mocktails and brews will be included on site.

Grocery Section Take note: The curated selection of gourmet food in the restaurant is set to be available in the market. In addition to wine and spirits, Wineside will tap into all-day gastronomic cravings with a deli area, grab-and-go sandwiches and fresh-baked pastries and a coffee, tea and pressed juice bar.

The store will be open to all guests, who can shop without sampling wine.

Pop in for an assortment of specialty grocery items in addition to cured meats and artisan cheeses.

Retail Liquor Store To complete the experience, the adjacent liquor store will offer for-purchase bottles of wines from the tasting room.

Additionally, there will be varieties of beer and spirits.
