New Location, Same Great Care!

“D ecide what is yours to hold, and let the rest go. Oftentimes, the good things in your life are lighter anyway—so there’s more room for them … You get to pick what your life has time and room for. Be discerning.” These words from Taylor Swift’s speech during the 2022 New York University commencement ceremony greatly reflects the advice that I would give to the graduating class of 2024: To go against the grain, make your own choices and live a happy and dutiful life.

In this education-themed issue of Maple Grove Magazine, you’ll meet several 12th graders from Heritage Christian Academy, Maple Grove Senior High School, Parnassus Preparatory School and Providence Academy in our annual Senior Spotlight feature. I had the pleasure of connecting with each of the students featured, all of whom are leaving quite the imprint on their school communities. Read the article on page 31.

As the Twin Cities’ largest and most experienced cancer treatment provider, we know that treating cancer calls for more than compassion. It means giving our patients access to more than 100 cancer care experts, evidence-based treatment paths, close-to-home locations and comprehensive services to support the whole person.

Our compassionate team works tirelessly towards one common goal –fighting cancer.

We’re also heading back to school in our Tastemakers section, where resident Dawn Cleveland shares her passion for charcuterie through her business, From the Diner, and with her “Boarding School” students, who learn how to curate their own charctuerie. Read the story, and get your ticket to boarding school on page 42.

This September/October issue also focuses on the lovely homes throughout our community—be sure to go to page 26 to see a recently remodled home on Eagle Lake, featuring multiple skylights, a waterfront view, rich maple accents and more. And on page 12, Kira Vanderlan of Zestful Design shares her tips for a successful home staging.

I’m looking forward to seeing the wondrous things that our upcoming school year will bring—and I’d love for you to share what our students are doing. Send me a line at hailey@localmedia.co.

VIEW AN ARTS EDUCATION

It’s well documented that a good and well-rounded education leads to personal growth, emotional wellbeing and the development of important life skills. Educational opportunities can provide individuals with opportunities for selfexpression, learning and a deeper understanding of oneself and the world.

In particular, an arts education brings us creativity and innovation. By nurturing creativity, we encourage innovative thinking. It allows individuals to express their unique ideas, thoughts and emotions through various art forms, such as painting, music, dance and theater. It also promotes cognitive development; studies have shown that arts education can also enhance cognitive abilities, including critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills. It encourages people to analyze, interpret and make connections, all while fostering intellectual growth. It opens an avenue to an appreciation for diversity and encourages students to develop a broader understanding of the world and encourages teamwork—a critical tool for anyone.

Lise Spence-Parsons, a local artist and author, is the president and treasurer of Maple Grove Arts Center. Find out more at maplegroveartscenter.org.

TASTE Red Hot

The spiciness of a pepper is measured according to the Scoville Heat Unit Scale (listed as SHU). Sweet bell peppers are rated a zero on the scale, while the hottest varieties can score 1,500,000 SHU or more. You may be familiar with jalapeños (2,000–8,000 SHU) and habañeros (100,000–575,000 SHU). Here are some that you might not be as familiar with:

Anaheims, 500–2,500 SHU: This large, pale yellow-green, mild hot pepper is named for Anaheim, California, even though they originated in New Mexico. The most famous of the Anaheim chiles is the hatch chile; they are usually on the spicier end of the scale. The fresh green taste of Anaheims is great in tomatillo salsa. These peppers are also commonly roasted and stuffed.

Poblanos, 1,000–5,000 SHU: When dried, these dark green beauties are known as anchos. Used commonly in moles, their large size and mild spiciness also make poblanos popular for stuffing, as in recipes for chiles rellenos.

Fresnos, 2,500–10,000 SHU: Fresno peppers resemble red jalapeños. Though they can be hotter than jalapeños, they are often sweeter and have a pronounced smokiness. They’re very good pickled and in fresh or cooked sauces and salsas.

Serranos, 15,000–30,000 SHU: Often slightly smaller than Fresnos, the heat of serranos tends to increase as the size decreases. Their fleshiness makes them a nice substitute for jalapeños in spicy salsa. Their most famous use is in giardiniera, a pickled vegetable condiment popular in Italy.

Rachael Perron is the culinary and branding director for Kowalski’s Markets, where she specializes in product development and selection, culinary education and communications. Find the recipes for Roasted Hatch Chiles and Thai Mango Salad at maplegrovemag.com and learn more at kowalskis.com.

Educated: A Memoir

Educated: A Memoir is Tara Westover’s story of her pursuit of education and knowledge. Westover reminisces and takes you on a journey to her life in the mountains of Idaho and recounts her time living with survivalist parents. As the youngest of seven children, Westover discusses the events of her old life and the harmful pressures to isolate from mainstream society. These narratives caused Westover to be denied formal education and often swept abuses under the rug.

Westover explores concepts of pursuing independence and tackles the internal struggle of loyalty to ourselves versus those we love. All the while inspiring us with her journey of self-discovery; away from the influences of her former life and family. It’s a heartbreaking account of having to love her family from afar and learning to pave her own path. Westover’s story might prompt you to reflect on your own life and the complexities of difficult family relationships. But throughout this journey, this book will end on themes of self-acceptance and motivate us to persevere in the things that are the most important to us. Just as Westover’s love for education took her to adventures and more.

BHARAT PULGAM believes there’s a better way to get your groceries— a cheaper, more efficient eco-friendlier way—and he’s rolling his idea out to the Twin Cities, one ZIP code at a time.

The Maple Grove resident is the CEO of Buncha, a grocery delivery app that offers prescheduled service for a set delivery fee of $1.45. “You can count on the schedule,” Pulgam says. For example, Monday might be Costco, Tuesday could be Target, Wednesday might be Aldi … You get the gist.

“It’s like the milkman for your favorite stores,” Pulgam says.

And because deliveries are aggregated by neighborhood, the company is able to keep down costs and carbon emissions. “That way, we’re able to bring delivery service to more Americans,” Pulgam says.

Pulgam has been an entrepreneur since he was 14 years old when he developed and produced a modular, earbudstyle headphone. He graduated from Wayzata High School in 2017 and went on to study business at the University of Minnesota. Two years into college, he came up with his next big idea. “The idea for the company was Pikup,” Pulgam says. “It’s like, ‘Hey, I’m going to the grocery store, do you need anything?’ because in the dorms, no one has cars.”

Pulgam teamed up with friends from high school to develop the idea. They secured “a couple hundred thousand dollars” from preseed investors. “Then we dropped out of school to go full-time.” That was 2019, and everything was looking up until the pandemic struck. “Then, nobody was in the dorms,” he says.

The setback was only temporary, however. As Pulgam waited out the pandemic at the family’s Maple Grove home, his mom provided inspiration for the evolution of Pikup. One day, she asked him to go to Costco, but he didn’t want to go for just one order. “She said, ‘Well then, what good are you?’” he says.

Pulgam ended up putting a post online

for their neighborhood HOA, seeing if anyone else had orders they’d like picked up at the same time. He kept posting, and soon he had nine orders, then 30 orders. “I realized college students were great, but it’s people with kids who really need it,” Pulgam says.

With the software in hand from their first go-round, Pulgam and his co-founders retooled their efforts and, for two years, their service focused on neighbors picking up orders for neighbors. Then, in 2022, Pikup became Buncha, and the service transitioned to a driver-based delivery service with the idea being to “get a buncha people to order together at the same time, to help them save money together,” he says.

Pulgam says they only charge a standard $1.45 delivery fee, and they guarantee store prices. Buncha makes its money through retailer relationships—the retailers pay a commission on each sale. He notes that their drivers are all full-time employees in order to maintain a high-quality service.

Today, Buncha is a 50-person team stretched between the Twin Cities headquarters, engineering offices in Delhi and its newest market in Denver. Buncha currently serves much of the Twin Cities and is adding new ZIP codes all the time.

“Seventy percent of people aren’t using grocery delivery,” Pulgam says. “Right now, it’s a luxury.”

Pulgam is committed to changing that and notes that they are working to soon accept SNAP and EBT payments. “I think we have a unique opportunity to provide service in an affordable, efficient way.”

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO SELL YOUR HOME , staging ensures you show off your space in the best possible way and offers higher value for your property and less time on the market.

The process can be overwhelming and stressful, but Kira Vanderlan, owner of Zestful Design, which offers services in decluttering, organizing and interior design, offered a few tips and tricks—as well as assurance—that all the hard work will be worth it in the end.

Staging Success

Everything, she says, plays a key role in her passion: staging.

“I offer these four lines of business because I’ve found you can’t do one without the other,” she says. “Staging is my absolute favorite. I could do that all day long ...”

Staging 101

When making changes to a home, Vanderlan says stagers first focus on removing or changing things like family

photos, red walls and patterned drapes.

“A lot of people can’t see past that kind stuff and don’t realize they can take drapes down or paint a wall,” she says. “Immediately, a buyer might think, ‘This isn’t the house for me.’ A critical part of staging is neutralizing everything.”

And that doesn’t mean boring. It can mean organizing a pantry, a seemingly simple move that has helped sell a home Vanderlan staged.

“When I’m staging, I aim to help to

A professionally staged home can take the stress out of selling.

leave a lasting memory by creating a look or display in the house that will just stand out to someone,” she says. “If they see an organized pantry, that will stand out to them. Leaving those positive impressions will really help get the home sold.”

An organized pantry serves as a reminder that staging isn’t just for the exterior parts of a room. When buyers move through a home, they want eyes behind closed doors. In fact, Vanderlan says the number one thing that home buyers report they prefer not to see on a home tour: bars of soap in the shower.

“Everything needs to be considered,” Vanderlan says. “Smells are a big one, too. Having strong odors in the home can immediately turn buyers away.”

Staging = Success

Vanderlan isn’t biased about the importance staging plays in selling homes. Paul Skillman, a Realtor with Keller Williams Premier Realty in Lake Minnetonka, says staged homes show better in photographs, and most home buyers start their search online.

“Homes that are prepared for the market and look stellar online will sell the quickest,” he says. “Time is money, and less time on the market means less stress and frustration for [the seller] in the long run.”

Skillman says he has found that homes worked on by a professional stager spent no more than 10 days on the market. On the flip side, nonstaged homes averaged 20 days on the market.

“I can see it in their eyes when a home buyer finds ‘the one.’ It’s like they’re in love,” he says.

Life Lessons

Young author shares insightful thoughts about kindness and friendship.

EIGHT-YEAR-OLD author and illustrator Eloise Zylka isn’t like every other young writer: She wants to be a dentist when she grows up. Her stories are relatable and her first book, Advice from a Second Grader, has lessons on life every adult could pull a page from: Be kind and follow your heart.

“Try your best, and don’t worry about how to spell the words. They can be fixed,” she says about writing. You may see a few words spelled how they sound as you read along the sweetly drawn pages in her stories. Plural. She’s written five so far, often at night, when she’s supposed to be in bed. And her first book is available on Amazon and includes a bonus book called The Big Bad Boulder, a story about a rock that’s grumpy and unloved. “It’s about strong emotions,” Eloise says. “I was trying to share that it’s always good to talk about the things that bother you.”

Eloise is now a third grader at Maple Grove’s Weaver Lake Elementary. Education experts say writing exercises, like the ones Eloise and her classmates do in school, support the

development of critical thinking and problem solving. Creative writing can also help students with focus, dedication to learning and motivation.

“She surprised us with this book,” says Eloise’s mom, Brianna Zylka. “She was gifted with blank writing notebooks and was always creative. A neighbor helped us self-publish on Amazon. Any proceeds she makes goes into her savings.”

So far, the book has been read by classrooms of kids as far south as Texas and is inspiring other young authors to use writing as a way to process their understanding of the world around them. Advice from a Second Grader reads like a selfempowerment guide for kids. In chapter two, Eloise says the main character is struggling to fit in. “At her school, things get heavy, but I am here for them,” she says. Each illustrated page reminds kids to stay positive and support each other.

The unassuming writer has also tried her hand at different genres, with a mystery and one about the colors she says represents emotions. “It’s important to be kind. My family taught me these values,” Eloise says. She’s also a poet, and her motivation for writing is a natural extension of her love of reading. “I like chapter books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, graphic novels and nonfiction about nature,” she says.

This fall, she’s hoping to share her work at nearby craft fairs, along with her sister, Charlotte, who makes dog toys out of fleece strips. Brianna says all these creative projects are teaching her kids about entrepreneurship and believing that they can do anything they set their minds to.

Advice from a Second Grader and The Big Bad Boulder can be purchased online at amazon.com.

BIRTHPLACE OF THE HOME TOUR

In 1948, Minneapolis and St. Paul became the birthplace of the Twin Cities Parade of Homes. What began as a single trend home presented by the then-Minneapolis Builders Association, has been transformed through the years into the largest home tour in the United States. At Housing First Minnesota, we’re proud to be celebrating 75 years of presenting the Parade of Homes in the Twin Cities.

The builders who participated in the early Parade of Homes events were shocked that the community lined up around the block to explore the stunning new construction homes that had the latest designs and technology. Today, the widely recognized and respected regional event continues to draw thousands of tour-goers to connect with builders and be inspired.

Adding the Remodelers Showcase® in 1984 and the Artisan Home Tour in 2014, our home tours are truly the ultimate community celebrations of homeownership.

AN EAGLE LAKE HOME IS REMODELED FOR A NATURE-LOVING FAMILY.

Every time Maple Grove resident Brianna and her family take a trip, they hire a photographer to capture their adventures. They have made these memory-making moments a tradition. Now, all of their favorite images adorn the walls of their newly renovated Eagle Lake home.

Among the clean, fresh renovation by J Brothers Design - Build - Remodel Inc., the photos “become the focus of our space, which I love,” Brianna says. The perfect backdrop for a lifetime of memories and explorations.

Formerly of Elk River, Brianna’s family bought their off-market home in autumn 2018 when a friend down the road connected them with the sellers. The 0.5-acre property sits on Eagle Lake, with 80 feet of water access on a channel and a secluded yard in a quaint neighborhood setting. “The other side of the channel is park reserve, so there’s nobody over there. It’s a ton of wildlife, and it’s very beautiful,” Brianna says.

It is the perfect setting for Brianna and her family, who collectively enjoy extreme sports like climbing and snowboarding, with easy access to the lake, driving a passion for morning wake

surfing sessions. Both Brianna and her husband, Mike, are in the real estate world, with Brianna’s experience in residential real estate informing her vision for the remodel. “When I first met Brianna, I was like, ‘Oh, I want to work with her because she has awesome taste,’” says Carrie Johnson, J Brothers co-owner and interior designer.

The bones of the home provided an ideal starting place. With a dozen skylights throughout the home, natural light was one of the most appealing features for Brianna and Mike; all the 1974 home needed was a bit of a facelift.

“With their house, you have to appreciate the view outside the window,” Johnson says. J Brothers centered the design on a desire to make the outdoors a part of the interior; that meant all new windows, with a focus on large, picture windows looking into their backyard.

“I really just wanted the exterior—the beautiful park across the street, the lake—to be really what’s featured when you look at the space,” Brianna says.

A new addition to the open kitchen and living space is a wide window bench, situated

between storage-heavy built-in cabinets and joined by a round table and two chairs. “We’ve added this window seat area, which is literally my favorite spot in the entire house. I just love sitting here,” Brianna says, adding that it makes an ideal place for their daily family breakfasts and afternoon chess matches.

Post-remodel, the flow of the kitchen is the same, with the most significant change being the island. “The orientation of my island completely changed. It was previously half of an octagon,” Brianna says. The update—a showstopping maple island with a veined white quartz countertop— is 8-feet by 4-feet with room for four barstools; the only thing breaking the smooth surface is a stainless steel undermount sink.

Twin skylights brighten the room from above; rich maple accents—in the floating shelves, range hood and island base—add a comfortable warmth to the light gray perimeter countertops, white cabinets and walls (Sherwin Williams Snowbound), marble herringbone backsplash and black finishes.

“Taking the old dark floor out and dark windows and putting new casings, white trim on the wall and white cabinets just brightened

everything up,” says Mitch Johnson, J Brothers co-owner and project manager.

The bathroom (painted in Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray) is a favorite part of the remodel for Mike—namely the 8-foot by 4-foot 8-inches statement shower, featuring one frosted and one untinted picture window, dual shower heads, a large quartz-top bench and porcelain tile that present a significant update from the soaking tub that formerly filled the space. “[Mike] wanted that bathroom,” Brianna says. “… It’s unique that we have a 4-foot by 4-foot window in our shower, but it’s my favorite feature too because I can shower and just see the beauty of everything behind me. It really brings the outdoors in.”

“We just love our space. It just feels like home to us … It was a fun process to be able to live in the house for quite some time and really get to know how the house lives for our family and then design it around what we wanted,” Brianna says.

Shopping for Medicare or individual, family or business insurance is an important process, which is why it’s crucial to work with a team that understands your coverage needs. Twin Cities Health Insurance Solutions Inc. is a family-owned insurance agency with 15 years of combined experience.

This local agency of individual, licensed health insurance agents, specializing in Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, Medicare prescription drug plans, individual health, dental and small group insurance, represents many national and local carriers.

“We provide clear, easy-to-understand information through consultations to help consumers find the right plan that fits their needs,” says Jill Mudd, agency owner. It’s important to note that there are no costs or fees to consumers for using these services.

“Shopping for health insurance can be challenging and confusing,” Mudd says. “There are rules and sometimes penalties if you make the wrong choice or delay getting coverage. We take the guess work out of it for consumers by providing guidance and solutions.”

Educating clients about insurance options begins with agents being properly trained and certified. “Our agents hold

health insurance licenses with the State of Minnesota and are certified with the Medicare companies we represent,” Mudd says. The team also completes continuing education to retain these licenses and annual certifications with each company. “We stay up on industry changes, enrollment periods, as well as compliance regulations, to make sure that we are providing up-to-date and accurate information,” Mudd says.

Twin Cities Health Insurance Solutions is a local, family business of health insurance experts. “Anyone can help you enroll. What sets us apart is that we provide ongoing service throughout the year by answering your questions and conducting annual policy reviews to ensure our clients are always on the plan that fits their needs,” Mudd says. “We are passionate about helping people feel confident in their health insurance decisions.”

MEET THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS.

A large part of what makes Maple Grove so special is the students in our community: They are our next thinkers and leaders, inventors and workers. These are the students who began high school in 2020 and were quickly faced with the challenges of COVID-19 and distance learning. Now, these students are blossoming into young adults, who will venture into society.

To celebrate this unique group of students,

we asked local schools to nominate students who will leave a positive imprint on their school and those who best exemplify their school’s community. Keep reading to hear from school officials, who provided us with insight to each student, as well as more from the students themselves.

JACK MAHONEY, 17 Providence Academy

“Jack has been a student at Providence in the lower, middle and upper school. I was his teacher in middle school and have been his principal the last two years. Jack is a very good student at a rigorous prep school. He is very active in our community as a three sport athlete and a member of our band. Jack is a model of what we hope for in a student in terms of his behavior, work ethic and value of our Catholic college prep mission.” —Kurt

WHAT IS THE ACHIEVEMENT OR ACCOMPLISHMENT OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

I am most proud of being voted by my fellow teammates to be a captain of the Cross Country Team. I was voted a captain for the past season, the fall of my junior year, and I was again voted to be a captain this upcoming year—my senior year. I started running cross country in seventh grade, and I have continued to run cross country throughout my whole high school career … I do my very best to lead the team and to make sure that everyone is being included and having a fun, yet still productive experience.

WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE LEADING UP TO THIS MOMENT?

My biggest influence has definitely been God. I was born and raised Catholic, and my faith is a huge aspect of my life. As a Catholic, I strive to live like Christ and to practice my faith. I have gone to Catholic schools my whole life, which I’m grateful for, since I’m able to still keep my faith at school … My faith is a big part of my life, so I can say with confidence that my biggest influence has definitely been God.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

… I plan on attending college the following fall … I plan on going into either business or finance, since I’m interested in the field, and I think it will help me after college as well. Because I have participated in school sports most of my life, I definitely plan on playing some intramural sports. I’m competitive, love sports and like to stay active. I’m looking

forward to what’s ahead for me after high school, and I hope whatever college I go to is as great and as helpful as my high school, Providence Academy, has been.

WHAT IS THE ACHIEVEMENT OR ACCOMPLISHMENT OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

I believe the accomplishment/achievement in my high school career that I am most proud of is restarting my school’s cheerleading team, along with one of my close friends. Our school had a cheerleading team for a while, but it eventually lost interest, so when I started, there was no cheerleading team. My friend, Kristin, and I talked to our principal about restarting the cheerleading team, and then we asked who would be interested. We got a lot of interest, and we even found a coach. Kristin and I were chosen as captains to lead the cheerleading team during basketball games. Our team kept getting told that we added so much energy to the basketball games and made them more fun. We got the student section involved in the game many times as well. I think the cheer team was a great addition to our school, and I’m glad I helped start it.

WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE LEADING UP TO THIS MOMENT?

… My friends have been my greatest influence up to this moment. They have always encouraged me to do things that will benefit me in the future, and they have helped me through rough days. I believe that if I didn’t have the friends that I do, I would be a very different person, who would have made very different life choices … Many of my friends have also encouraged me in my faith ... They have kept me accountable, and I think without these friends, my faith wouldn’t be as strong.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

My plan is to go to college (so far, still undecided where) and my hope is to go into the medical field; specifically I want to be a nurse in the NICU. I’ve wanted to be a nurse for a very long time, so I’m excited to be getting closer to achieving this dream.

WHAT THREE WORDS BEST DESCRIBE YOU?

Funny, kind and smart MEMENGWA (MEME) WHITE, 16 Maple Grove Senior High School

“Meme’s smile lights up a room, and her enthusiasm for life and learning is contagious. Meme’s interests and activities are diverse, but the common thread is her love of competition and interaction with others. From alpine and barrel racing to high school lacrosse, Meme is an active athlete competing at high levels. She also gives back to the high school and larger community by representing her class in student council and our district through powwows. She also travels throughout the Midwest for powwows and is enrolled in the AlabamaCoushatta Tribe of Texas. Meme is a natural connector, and younger students are drawn to her warm demeanor and helping nature. She is inquisitive and has a genuine love of learning, which will be an asset as she pursues a path toward a future in veterinary medicine. She is a delight to have at the high school and leaves a positive impact on all that have the good fortune to be around her.”

WHAT IS THE ACHIEVEMENT OR ACCOMPLISHMENT OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

One of my achievements that I’m proudest of is my MVP defense award for lacrosse. It was a sort of representation to me that all my hard work over the years had finally paid off, and I was being recognized by my teammates and coaches for that hard work … [and] when I became the captain of my ski team. It was a valuable experience that taught me a lot about leadership and the associated duties that come with the role.

I’m Native American, and my tribe is Alabama/Coushatta, Ojibwa and Dakota, [and] my Indian name is Waabanong-ikwe, which means woman of the east or sunrise woman. As a result of participating in dancing, I have earned the title of a Native American princess. One of my responsibilities involves representing schools at powwows held throughout the country.

WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE LEADING UP TO THIS MOMENT?

When I was young, I grew up surrounded by dogs, horses and many other sorts of farm animals. I remember almost every weekend when I’d visit unci (grandma in Dakota) and ukanna (grandpa in Dakota), I’d sit with my ukanna and watch this show called The Incredible Dr. Pol. It’s what sparked my interest in wanting to help animals … That’s when I began to make my plans for the future to work and achieve my goal of becoming a veterinarian, and my mom was right behind me supporting my endeavors.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

I’m going to stick to the plan that I’ve had since I was 7 years old when I was surrounded by horses and I realized I wanted to work in a field that

concentrated on taking care of all kinds of animals. The first step is to get into the University of Minnesota for my bachelor of science [degree], the same place my mom went for her undergrad and then her doctorate. After graduating, I plan to go to the University of Colorado or stay at the University of Minnesota for veterinary school.

RONAN LANDER, 17 Parnassus Preparatory School

“Ronan Lander has been a pillar of Parnassus Preparatory School for many years, both academically and athletically. Mr. Lander joined the school in 2012, the second year of operation. [He] and his classmates are the first scholars to go through the entire schooling at

Parnassus, from Prima (kindergarten) to 4R (12th grade). Ronan has challenged himself through the rigors of a classical education by studying Latin, advanced mathematics, ancient history, classical literature, rhetoric and much more. Ronan will also be a part of the first group of athletes to complete six years in our track and field and cross country programs. He was a pioneer for these two programs, joining the first year that they were offered. Mr. Lander owns several school records across both sports and was the first athlete to earn all-conference honors in cross country. As a result of the hard work over the years, Ronan helped the Boys Cross Country Team earn a state tournament appearance in the fall of 2021. He has been an outstanding athlete to have on these two teams and has turned that passion for running into what will be a successful collegiate running career. We wish him good luck!”

WHAT IS THE ACHIEVEMENT OR ACCOMPLISHMENT OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

The accomplishment from my high school career that I am most proud of was sophomore year becoming the fastest 1,600-meter runner in the section for my age. Getting there proved to be more challenging than I expected due to some setbacks that occurred. After a successful first track season in seventh grade, I was thrilled about my upcoming eighth-grade season as a lot of my friends had joined the team. However, after only a week of practice, our season was cancelled due to the pandemic … I created a training plan for myself and stuck to it. I then experienced another setback the following track season, as I got injured while doing triple jump … Despite these frustrating setbacks, I kept working for it, and, as a sophomore, I was the fastest 1,600-meter runner in the section for my age.

WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE LEADING UP TO THIS MOMENT?

… My track and cross-country teammates and coaches. When I first joined the team in seventh grade, I did not know many people outside of my age group. However, that all changed after hundreds of miles of running together, encouraging each other and competing as a team. Since that first year, my teammates and coaches have influenced me to work hard, be a dedicated teammate and to become a better leader.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

I am planning to attend college after high school. I am at the early stages of my college search, and I have not decided on a major yet. Regardless of which college I attend, I would like to continue to run track and cross country. The classes I have been most interested in throughout high school have been math, science, and history. In my free time, I continue to explore careers that interest me and could be a good fit for me.

BOARDING SCHOOL

From the Diner focuses on charcuterie boards and educational experiences.

FROM THE DINER FOUNDER and Maple Grove resident Dawn Cleveland traded her stethoscope for a second chance at following her passion after realizing she had just the recipe for success when it comes to charcuterie boards.

Ironically, when Cleveland first heard the term “charcuterie,” she had no idea what it meant.

“One of the nurses I worked with at the hospital told me where she’s from they had a charcuterie restaurant,” she says. “I was like, ‘a char-what?’”

Little did she know charcuterie boards would grow to become the next big culinary trend. According to the Institute of Food Technologists, charcuterie sales are valued at $1–$2 billion annually.

Twenty-five years ago, Cleveland toured La Cordon Bleu as a possible career path, but, knowing she didn’t have an interest in working at a restaurant that she didn’t own, she ultimately decided to pursue a nursing career instead.

“I’m more interested in having my own restaurant and creating things on my own,” she says.

To balance her love for cooking with her devotion to nursing, Cleveland began creating boards on the side. “I just woke up one day and was like, ‘I think I’m going to make a charcuterie board,’” she says.

In November 2020, Cleveland began bringing her creations to her family gatherings and creating boards for various people. The word soon

began to spread about her masterful board creations to the greater Twin Cities community.

“People wanted them for more than just the holidays. They wanted them for really every occasion that you can think of,” she says.

Soon, Cleveland’s boards were being featured at birthdays, anniversaries and baby showers. A little over a year later, in May 2021, she had enough orders to keep her busy full time. Saying goodbye to the scrubs, Cleveland ordered a prescription for a fresh start.

Word of Mouth

Sharing her charcuterie boards on social media, her growth was organic. One wintery day in 2021, Angry Inch Brewery in Lakeville reached out to see if Cleveland would teach a charcuterie making class. “People were looking for things to do because they [were] tired of being held up in their homes,” she says.

She hesitantly accepted, knowing teaching was completely out of her comfort zone. Her first class sold out instantly, so the brewery asked if she would do another class. Within days both classes were sold out. “It just took off,” she says.

Cleveland began to see other people shared her love for charcuterie. After reaching out to other local wineries and breweries, her calendar filled up with classes. Before she knew it, From the Diner and its “Boarding School” was launched.

43 September/October 2023 maplegrovemag.com
TASTEMAKERS

Today, she is asked to teach charcuterie at other businesses, such as Bridgewater Bank and UnitedHealthcare, as well as for private events, including bridal showers. “It’s been such a joy for me,” she says. “I want to teach them new things they haven’t heard of.”

A centerpiece at weddings and larger parties, her largest creation—called a Grazing Table— serves groups of 20 and more. “They’re a showstopper and a focal point,” she says.

Boarding School classes cost $75 where attendees create regular and themed boards full of everything from artisan cheeses to mouthwatering fruits.

To make charcuterie less overwhelming, Cleveland founded the Clock Method, a system of putting the board together that tastefully organizes the ingredients. She encourages students to use this when putting together charcuterie at home.

“They’ve heard of it, they’ve seen pictures [and] they think it’s pretty,” she says. “You bring the ingredients home; you have it sitting on your counter, and it’s pretty intimidating to know where to start.”

Cleveland says charcuterie should be a creative outlet. Her goal is that students express themselves and their diverse tastes through creating boards that represent them.

“When you’re putting these boards together, there really is never one that’s the same,” she says. “Each time, they can be different, and you can express yourself creatively with the food.”

Although it may be hard to believe, her background in nursing has inspired an intangible addition to her boards. “When I was a nurse, I was trained in Healing Touch, and I would do different types of energy work on my hospital patients,” she says.

Before preparing a charcuterie board, Cleveland grounds herself, remembering who she is making the board for. “[I] think about what the occasion is, and I put all that positive energy through myself into the food for others,” she says.

Local photographer captures the fun of fall.

“I OFTEN USE my front door as a backdrop for my dog’s Instagram photos. I have fun with different themes and decorations for each holiday and the change of seasons. I also get beautiful natural light there in the afternoon and evenings,” says lifestyle photographer Debra Bernard. “I took this particular photo on my front steps in October.”
