his special edition of St. Croix Valley Magazine is one of my favorite issues of the year—we get to celebrate the people, places and things that make the Valley such a unique place to live, work and visit.

This is an issue meant to last; to be picked up year-round; to spark conversations with your neighbors, friends and family around the Valley. Whether it’s left on the kitchen counter or loaned to out-of-town guests who want to bounce around the Valley, it is a lasting issue created to inspire our readers.

The top three vote-getters in each category become finalists and are announced in the spring on our website, and the top vote-getter is the winner and is announced in the summer on our website and in our magazine. Once votes are tabulated, our editorial team fact-checks the address and contact information for each finalist. If a finalist is no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., the next highest vote-getter(s) moves up to become a finalist.

Can a business or organization be a finalist if it’s located outside of the magazine’s coverage area?

Stella Snacks I’ve written many recipes for loved ones over the years: sister, daughter, son, husband, mother-in-law, best friend and so on. However, there is one very special friend I’ve yet to write for, even cook for—until now.

This furry friend came into my life at what should have been a hard—very hard—time. In the midst of 2020, while preparing to send my oldest off to college, sheltering in place and all that came with that, I found the support I needed in my sweet Boo Boo Baby, or as most people know her, Stella, my cavapoo (cavalier King Charles spaniel-miniature poodle).

Those who know me well were beyond shocked when I brought Stella home with me.

I’ve said over and over that I’d never have a pet in my house, to the point where my 14-yearold son once didn’t speak to me for two days.

But, 2020 changed all that, and I actually came to deeply understand the concept of therapy dogs. She’s one loved little baby and is always there whenever any of us needs a snuggle, a walk, a chat or—my favorite—a nap. In the last two years she’s grown from a tiny pup to grownup Stella Bella.

I’m particularly fastidious about what Stella eats. She doesn’t get table scraps of any kind— and we’re picky about her food and treats (more so than I probably was with my actual children).

But, in return for all Stella has given me and my family and to celebrate her second birthday on June 6, I finally created a recipe just for her.

My recipe for Stella Snacks is really simple, made from clean, dog-safe ingredients that I know she loves (carrots and apples, with a little sweet potato mixed in). I make them in dog bone-shaped silicone molds, but Stella wouldn’t care if they were hearts, fish or teddy bears; you could even roll them out and use cookie cutters.

Baby food makes them super easy to prepare, but you can certainly purée your own combination of dog-safe vegetables or fruits and use either whole wheat or oat flour to create a

sprawling, it contains a through line that represents the hallmark of every healthy community: supporting its own. For this Best of St. Croix Valley issue, we want to check in with a few stellar nonprofits and programs that share time, resources and passion throughout the community.

This youth-led program is built of Hudson High School students who create their own programming throughout the year to engage and enrich the surrounding community. “Currently, we run 10–15 programs that our youth implement and participate in,” says YAH executive director Meredith Arcand.

The longest running of these programs is Peer-to-Peer, which provides resources and presentations to middle school students. “YAH youth reach out to their peers, engaging them in positive selfimage, how to prepare for high school and how to be a positive participate in your community,” Arcand says. On average, she notes that 66 percent of all middle school students report learning something new from these presentations.

The youth-led nature of YAH also allows members to introduce events and programs of their own, which can keep pace with the ever-evolving needs faced by students today. One such program is the Mental Health Youth Ambassadors program, launched in January 2022.

“The goal of this program is to equip teens with the tools and information so they can become active at identifying a peer in crisis and know how to direct them to the proper resources,” Arcand says.

Arcand says she’s most proud of the program’s 47 youth participants. “Their lives are full of many things they have to do, and volunteering is not something they have to do; it is a choice,” she says.

St. Croix Valley Foundation (SCVF)

SCVF partners with 10 affiliate community foundations to encourage charitable giving, collaboration and connection between community members and the causes that speak to them. SCVF is steward to more than $90 million in assets, which they’ve raised through cash donations as well as gifts of appreciated stock, real estate, life insurance policies and more.

SCVF’s affiliates focus on local giving and local grant making, explains marketing manager Ellen Montgomery, while SCVF itself provides staffing, administrative, financial, investment and legal support for affiliates. This assistance frees up the more locally-focused affiliates to devote their attention to community projects and needs.

One affiliate, the Lower St. Croix Valley Community Foundation, recently coordinated a massive and multi-year bike trail restoration, spanning the communities of Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix Beach, St. Mary’s Point and Afton. In Stillwater, the Stillwater Area Community Foundation funded the restoration of the Stillwater stairs, a popular haunt of morning fitness climbers, and funded the cleanup and reclamation of Fairy Falls, where trails fell victim to erosion. The Hudson Community Foundation has recently funded W.H.O. Books, a program that seeks to provide young readers with books focused on diversity, equity and acceptance.

“These are just a few examples of the many ways that the local grantmaking of SCVF affiliates impacts communities throughout the St. Croix Valley,” Montgomery says. “... These projects rely on the generosity of those who support their hometown via their community foundation, caring for the place they love today and forever.”

ArtReach St. Croix executive director Heather Rutledge has been working with museums, arts organizations and arts funders since her first high school internship. “For me, it is about building an ecosystem where the arts can thrive,” she says.

Rutledge has been on the St. Croix Valley Magazine Editorial Advisory Board since its inception. “I love pitching art stories and being a cheerleader for the creative projects that happen in our river towns,” Rutledge says.

Treasuring the outdoor work through all seasons, she also serves on the board of Franconia Sculpture Park. “Franconia is a great example of how you can experience the arts in the Valley, but I also love driving all over the countryside to satiate my pottery addiction during the St. Croix Pottery Tour over Mother's Day weekend,” she says.

Understanding the value of volunteers to nonprofits, she gives her time to Valley Outreach, StyleXchange and Charity Cases.

She and her husband, Andrew, settled in Stillwater 10 years ago, where they’re raising their two boys. They spend quality time at parks, including Afton State Park, William O’Brien State Park and Interstate State Park. “The beach at Square Lake is our go-to on summer evenings,” she says.

Favorites for dining out? “I’m a vegetarian, and luckily, many of the Valley’s restaurants are vegetarian-friendly,” Rutledge says. “Phil’s Tara Hideaway is a great place to take out-of-town guests.

Brent Peterson

A member of the Stillwater High School class of 1982, Brent Peterson started his history career at the Minnesota Historical Society and is the Washington County Historical Society (WCHS) executive director.

Peterson has served on the Stillwater Heritage Preservation Commission and the Historic Courthouse Advisory Commission. He is currently a trustee on the Fairview Cemetery Board, and he writes a weekly column for the Stillwater Gazette on the history of the St. Croix Valley.

Because St. Croix Valley Magazine is a source for citizens and visitors, Peterson enjoys serving on our board and providing to the community. “With its articles and other attributes, it is a fine magazine for those looking for something to do in the Valley,” he says.

Peterson is married with two grown daughters. Noting there are many fine restaurants in the Valley, Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop is the one they keep going back to. Washington Park is their family go-to as they live a few blocks away.

When he’s not working or doing housework, he’s golfing, fishing, enjoying their family cabin in northern Wisconsin or playing WCHS’s Vintage Base Ball.

ors, shapes and sounds. Years ago, the fireworks show (one of the most loved events) ended not with a traditional grand finale, but rather a firework shown in the shape of an American flag.

“The flag in the sky meant the end of Booster Days,” says Booster Days committee member John Herick.

Herick also recalls the homemade heavy cannons and the truckloads of gravel that were needed to fire off the fireworks. “When the shells went off, the whole dike shook,” says Herink. Now, fireworks are ignited electronically—and even more has changed since COVID-19.

in its entirety due to COVID; in 2021, road construction halted its parade.

Typically, Booster Days includes a carnival, live music, bingo, beer, hot-dogeating contests, a tractor pull, fishing contest, bags tournament and fireworks, sponsored by the City of Hudson.

Its beginnings were less than what it is now. Hudson Boosters, originally incorporated as the SouthSide Boosters, has been going strong since July 16, 1954.

However, knowing what happened 68 years ago is complicated. “If you hang around long enough, you became the historian,” says past Hudson Boosters president Randy Lau. Lau’s research centers around an old bag full of Boosters memorabilia passed

down from committee to committee.

It includes a collection of Boosters buttons—the earliest of which dates back to 1952, the year the Hudson boys baseball program started and the year the city held the first Annual Hudson Picnic.

Hudson Boosters firsts, according to Lau’s timeline, include ice car races (1955), an Easter egg hunt (1958), girls’ recreation program (1960), fireworks and a tug-o-war event (1962), snowmobile races (1966), a boat parade (1967), a water ski show (1969), a parade down Main Street (1970), boys and girls T-ball program (1976), girls’ softball recreation program (1984), girls’ traveling softball program (1995) … And, in 2001, all Booster Days activities moved from the

south to the north end of Lakefront Park.

“You have to give those early Boosters credit. They tried a ton of things,” says Lau. Members then and now are volunteers.

“While volunteerism has been down lately, we have a community of help in our community,” says Holly Schultz, Booster Days coordinator. “Members and non-members are volunteering, and we can use every last one of them.” Herink adds that the volunteers, like the fireworks, come in all different forms.

“Some of our volunteers come for a single event and some are there 18 hours per day. We’ve had a construction guy volunteer his crew for security, and we’ve had churches run food stands,” he says.

Last year, the Hudson High School football team helped tear down and clean up.

For this year, from the sounds of it—snap, crackle and pop—everything is either on, or possibly be on, the table. At the time of writing, Schultz says summer felt so far away. Following a February Booster Days committee meeting, she confidently says, “But we’re having Booster Days.”

The driving force, as always, is the children in the community. “Kids’ involvement is why we do it,” says Schultz.

Money raised at Hudson Booster Days is used to support Hudson’s youth softball, baseball and football programs.

Whether it’s for a casual brunch or a delectable dinner, time spent volunteering, afternoons sailing or mornings playing, the spots you’ll visit in our quaint space are ones to surely embrace. LEND A HELPING HAND

My story with Coco’s Heart Dog Rescue (CHDR) starts a little unexpectedly. In 2019, my (now) fiancé and I took an anniversary trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in September. But our adoption story starts months before, when we saw an adorable husky litter that had just been put up for adoption on the CHDR website.

We’d been searching for a small breed, but I immediately felt drawn to one particular pup in this litter—Athena, a white husky with her tongue sticking out in her intake photo. Fast forward three months later, she’s still available for adoption—all seven siblings had already been adopted—so we made a promise that, if she was still available after our vacation, we’d put in an application. While

waiting for our flight home, we decided to apply.

Three days later, we’d officially adopted our first pup and renamed her Nova.

It felt like fate—we were waiting for the right dog, and she was waiting for her right owners. Now, over two years later, my journey with CHDR continues.

Director Ashley Kurtz had a childhood dog named Coco, who died when she was young—it left an impact on Kurtz, who founded CHDR in 2010.

Since the inception, when its beginnings were small and dogs were being fostered with a small group, it has grown to a large-scale operation. It opened a facility in Somerset, Wisconsin, where it hosts its own veterinary clinic, office space and, hopefully one day, an animal sanctuary.

ating in an older building [in Hudson, Wisconsin] where we had to carry dogs up the stairs, among other things,” says Molly Larson, donor and program and event coordinator. “Now, we’ll have a functional space that’s one level … It’s all really exciting for us.”

Although CHDR’s main rescue efforts go toward dogs (at the time of writing, it had over 500 dogs in rescue!), it also sees pocket pets like guinea pigs or bunnies. It’s also seen stray cats, a pot-bellied pig and, twice, mini horses. “With the new space, we want to open up and do more pocket pets,” Larson says. She notes that, though a long-term desire, the hope is to open an small-scale animal sanctuary where it could accept mini horses, goats or other animals in need.

The rescue also works with the community in providing several resources. Kids Day Camp is an annual event hosted in the summer where kids ages 3–10 learn about veterinary procedures, crafts, responsible pet ownership and more.

“We’re lucky to live in an area where [responsible pet ownership] is really well known, but it is still something to teach the next generation,” Larson says. The Senior Buddies Program is another system to aid the community. Foster dogs are taken into assisted living facilities, where the residents can interact with the dogs. It also partners with the Minnesota Wild with its “Team Dogs”—the hockey team fosters one dog a year where it serves as a team dog; after 12 months, it goes to Soldier 6, where it trains to be an emotional support dog for

a veteran. “It’s really cool and allows people to see the rescue dogs,” Larson says. “It’s so wonderful that people see what the dogs are capable of, even if they’re from rescue.”

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Stillwater resident Dariush Moslemi says it was a date night with his wife, Sarah, in Minneapolis that prompted him to open The Velveteen Speakeasy. “We were at a then popular speakeasy, and while the place was fantastic, the service was a bit on the snooty end,” he says.

“We looked at each other, and were like, ‘I think we could do this in Stillwater and make it a bit friendlier.’” Two years later, Moslemi’s speakeasy opened to the public.

The namesake comes from The Velveteen Rabbit, a children’s book from which Sarah read a passage at their wedding. “She loved the passage about no matter how worn you are or where you have been, you will be loved. And that followed our philosophy into service and accommodation,” Moslemi says. The speakeasy certainly takes this attitude seriously—the space is designed to “remove the world from you,” Moslemi says, and has special features throughout to transport you to another decade.

From the libation menu to the small bites, there’s no shortage of inspiration at The Velveteen. Marcus Clark, then head bar man, created the cocktail menu, trained the bartenders and passed the baton to Brady Plum, who now runs the bar. (Clark now helps to run Moslemi’s The Wild Hare.)

“There are so many cocktails that people love,” Moslemi says. Other favorites include the Brooklyn, a classic prohibition cocktail; the Don Corleone, a powerhouse of rich complexity; and the Bearcat Punch, a light and fruity martini without being overly sweet. “I recommend the Aviation, a Prohibition-era drink from 1916, which features Citadelle gin, crème de violette, Luxardo maraschino and lemon,” he says.

As for the small bites, Moslemi says the menu draws on years of creating at-home appetizers; many of the offerings are gluten-free and vegetarian, and all items are created in-house. “A favorite and staple on the menu are the stuffed mushrooms,” he says. “[It’s] simple, elegant, gluten-free and vegetarian.” Executive chef Jake Price leads the team at The Velveteen but also runs the food program in partnership with its neighboring restaurant, The Lumberjack.

Since its opening in 2017, The Velveteen has become a staple for date nights (how I first discovered it!), an after-hours cocktail or a simple dinner. Now, Moslemi is embarking on a new journey with his new Stillwater-based restaurant, The Wild Hare. “[It] has a polar opposite vibe, but

with the backbone of service and accommodation that we instilled at The Velveteen,” he says. “… The Velveteen drew inspiration from Prohibition in the 1920s, from the style of the drinks to the décor, music and general vibe. The Wild Hare draws its vision from the 1990s without being in your face, with ’90s favorites playing in the background, album walls, graffiti and even a pay phone.” The Wild Hare, centered around food and also featuring a largely gluten-free menu, is a “casual, organic dive fusion,” Moslemi says, and is a mix of old school and new school.

So, whether it’s date night at The Velveteen or appetizers at The Wild Hare, Moslemi says it’s the environment that brings people back. “People have loved getting lost in another era, another time, right in their hometown,” he says. “And we love creating that for them. With all we have to deal with in our lives, it’s nice to be able to step away from your life, just to enjoy some food, drinks, time with friends and in a space that removes you from your world.”

THE BEARY BEST PLAYSPACE

Growing up in neighboring Woodbury, it was evenings and weekends when we’d come to Stillwater for a bite to eat or a walk near the river—but one of my fondest memories is of one of Minnesota’s cutest public parks: Teddy Bear Park.

About 17 years ago, an anonymous local couple wanted to make a donation through a big-hearted gesture—and thus, Teddy Bear Park was born.

“Overall, the park was constructed for about $5 million, with the majority of that cost covered by their donation,” says Jason Grode, park superintendent for the City of Stillwater. “The Teddy Bear Park name came from the donors, as well as the design of the park.”

Featuring varying play equipment and a climbing wall, Teddy Bear Park is fun for all—it also features an amphitheater with children’s programs, a gazebo and picnic tables, plus a two-story barn that can be reserved. “Teddy Bear Park has playgrounds and activities that are very unique compared to other parks,” Grode says. “The playground equipment is designed for younger children and includes slides, nets, tubes [and bridges].”

But it’s the larger-than-life teddy bears that give the park its namesake. From a small teddy bear holding a letter block to the large, bow-donning teddy bear holding a smaller bear, the variety of statues welcome kids into the park in an exciting manner—especially during the park’s grand opening in 2006.

The park boasts fun activities for toddlers through age 8. Grode says the activities can vary from story times to music sessions. “In the past, Teddy Bear Park has hosted several children’s programs throughout the summer at the amphitheater

including music time, story tellers, jugglers, magicians, dance shows, puppet shows, zoo animals, children’s concerts [and more],” he says.

The park opens on or around April 15 of each year and is open through October 15, weather permitting. “It is estimated that thousands of visitors visit Teddy Bear Park each year when it is open,” Grode says.

WWH underscores the value of holistic care, believing that health is more than just the absence of disease. It encompasses the whole person—mind, body and spirit. “Our team includes integrative practitioners, a health coach and experts in fitness and nutrition, all working together to help the patient be healthier,” says Charlie Forbush, chief administrative officer.

“Our mission is to build a healthier tomorrow together, and a large part of that is through patient education,” says Kathleen Findlay, MD, who leads WWH’s simple health program. WWH offers a wide range of outreach programs to

further its mission. Staff members include registered dietitians, a board-certified health and wellness coach, a certified diabetes educator, personal trainers and more. In addition, it offers programs, including Simple Health, Mindfulness Training and Living Well with Chronic Conditions.

While staff and programs are at the ready, some people need encouragement to schedule appointments. Too many people have put off tending to their health during the pandemic. “We see the ill-effects of delayed care here every day,” Pederson says. “We can’t emphasize the need for preventive care enough. Medical problems arise; it is why we are here, but the earlier WWH providers can identify and diagnose, the sooner our team can provide treatment and can make an impact.”

That attention to treatment is resonating with patients. “I am relatively new to [WWH], and, for the first time in my adult life, I feel that the providers I’ve seen are genuinely concerned about my well-being,” says K.S.
