Welcome to the September Issue of Local Living Ahh September already! We’re heading into arguably my favourite time of year. I love the Autumn for many reasons. Not least for the amazing colours. A very short letter this issue as this month is packed with some fabulous local business, news stories and what’s on information. Don’t forget to get in touch if you have a story to tell or if you want to get your business out to 10,000 homes. Next month will be gearing up, dare I say it, to promoting some Christmas offers , fairs and events. Until next month...

Lowton WI: At our August meet we kick started our fund raising for our charity this year, Women’s Refuge. Our members arranged weeds and grasses and present them in any receptacle available. These were voted on by placing a coin in front of our favourites. The coins go to our coffee morning fund on 5th Oct in St Mary’s community hall in Lowton to support the women’s refuge. The winner was our treasurer Rosalind Smith by president Lin Hayes and her beautiful, display. The second half was informative and interactive. We had a visit from Sian Percival-Edwards from Heartbeat North West Cardiac Care. This is a charity that depends solely on donations. The nearest centre for us is Chorley. Heartbeat care for cardiac patients and people at risk of developing problems. Sian demonstrated the various way’s we can help ourselves to stay healthy by making subtle changes to our lifestyle, including enough exercise, eating the right foods, keeping an eye on our weight and our blood pressure and cholesterol levels are. Lowton WI meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7.15pm and are held at Lowton Social Club on Newton Road. Our next meeting is our 55th birthday party including a talk entitled Ballet on tour by Hilary Norton. If anyone is thinking of joining the Women’s Institute and wants to visit please contact Lin Hayes on 01942 207764 Carl and I, have decided to fundraise on behalf of this amazing charity for our half marathon in September. Following my wife Shelley’s breast cancer diagnosis in 2014, she became a boobette for CoppaFeel! to help educate and raise awareness of the importance of getting to know your boobs and pecs. In the UK, 1 in 8 women will experience breast cancer in their lifetime and over 400 men are diagnosed every year. Early detection really does save lives! CoppaFeel! are the first UK breast cancer charity to create awareness amongst young people, with the aim to install a new healthy habit that could one day save a life. They are on a mission to stamp out late detection of breast cancer and ensure the nation is checking their boobs regularly. They want to educate people on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, encourage them to get to know what is normal for them and empower young people to have the confidence to see a doctor if they notice anything that isn't right for them. Coppafeel want everyone to have the best possible chance of surviving breast cancer. Ideally to live in a world where all breast cancers are diagnosed at the earliest stage possible, at which treatments are more effective and survival rates are higher. www.coppafeel.org/our-charity/ www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tezzandcarlehm2019

First tenants move in to new Rivington Court industrial units George Moss and Sons is celebrating the completion of five brand new, state of the art industrial units on its new Rivington Court development at Moss Industrial Estate. Leigh business, Mclaren Sports Homes, which specialises in bespoke sporthomes, race vans and motorhome conversions, are the first tenants to move in to the brand new industrial units on St. Helen’s Road in Leigh. The move marks the competition of the second phase of building at Rivington Court, which will eventually contain thirteen units of mixed sizes, from 2,738 sq ft up to 11,952 sq ft. Rivington Court is located right in the middle of the industrial estate and is being built in three phases, the third and final phase is due to begin construction in the autumn. Mclaren Sports Homes first moved to Moss Industrial Estate in 2018, at first occupying a much smaller unit, but, due to the rapid growth of the business, it needed more space. Mclaren’s brand-new premises are double the size, at 4,000 sq ft, and feature three vehicular doors and twice the workshop space, meaning they can work on a larger number of vehicles at the same time. The business has also gained a much bigger office space and larger staff kitchen, to accommodate its growing team, as well as a customer reception area. Craig Lewis, director at Mclaren Sports Homes, said: “Moss Industrial Estate was able to understand the needs of our growing business and find us an industrial unit which would allow us to increase our efficiency and give us the opportunity to grow. We produce high quality, customised motorhome conversions and this modern unit, on a well-kept industrial estate, reflects really well on our business.” Sebastian Moss, managing director at George Moss & Sons, said: “Rivington Court is an exciting new development of industrial units, which are completely bespoke and can be fitted out to suit the needs of each individual business. “We take great care of our tenants and want them to stay with us so if we can help them to grow then we will do everything we can to accommodate that. Maclaren Sports Homes is doing incredibly well and we are really pleased that we have been able to support them by creating a workspace in which they can continue to thrive.” Lowton West Residents Vice-Chair Alan Nixon is working flat out to raise funds for a Defibrillator station to be sited in the soon to be de-commissioned telephone box at Crow Wood Road in Lowton. The first fundraiser has been arranged for Friday 20th September at 7.30pm in the Lowton Independent Methodist Church on Newton Road, when the local community choir, All Singers Great and Small will perform. Tickets priced at £5 (under 16 pay £3) from members or pay on the door. www.lwdf.webs.com.The residents group will also host a Macmillan Coffee Morning, £1 entry, on Tuesday 17th September at 10am in the Community Room at Manor Court. Lowton West Residents was formed in 2018 to highlight local issues of concern and campaign for solutions. Issues raised have included the proposed HS2 route, Slag Lane traffic congestion, traffic ‘cut through’ on the Scott Road estate and the obstruction of the 588 bus service on Crow Wood Road. Meetings are attended by elected Councillors and, when appropriate, relevant Council officers. The group meets monthly on the last Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Community Room at Manor Court – new members most welcome – www.lowtonwestresidents.webs.com

Other than harvesting the last of any fruit or vegetables we have grown, this month is one in which we ought to look to the future. Christmas is weeks away, but if you want hyacinths in bloom around New Year, buy some ‘prepared’ hyacinths (there have been treated so that they will come into flower earlier than the ‘ordinary’ ones) and get them planted in bowls of bulb fibre NOW! Make sure the bulb fibre is nice and damp, put them in the dark in a cool but not freezing place and you will have early, scented flowers. This is also a good month to get daffodils and narcissi planted in pots, tubs or the garden. As roses end their flowering season, look at them from the point of view of will they withstand any winter gales. We don’t prune roses until the early spring, for frosts will damage any premature growth triggered by pruning. So if you have very tall bush rises, or very long flower shoots on climbing roses, cut them back a little, but not as far back as you will prune them next year. We love eating salads and try to grow them the year round, in winter either in the garden frame or in the greenhouse in large containers. I make a very sparse sowing of two varieties (Winter Gem and Winter Density, and about 40 seeds in a seed tray) in seed trays and then, when the seedlings have developed two leaves as well as the first oval seed leaves, I prick them out four inches apart in the containers. Start harvesting when the plants touch each other, taking alternative ones so that those remaining may grow to fill the gaps. I make sowings later in October and in December (inside in the conservatory) to replace those we have eaten. A good garden should include facilities for wildlife. Those of us with a bird table and range of feeders holding fat slabs and fat balls, seeds such as sunflower hearts, niger seed and peanuts, and dry mealworms can enjoy a wide range of species, ranging from goldfinches to wrens, great spotted woodpeckers and nuthatches to Scandinavian winter visitors, the brambling, redwings and fieldfares.

6

But think too of the hedgehog, a mammal whose UK population has crashed in the last half century. My garden is in a modern estate but only a hundred yards from the open country, and we have (in July and August) been enjoying a female hedgehog feeding with her two youngsters on mealworms just outside our back door. They will soon be hibernating, in a loose box made of old cut down chunks of a leylandi cypress that we cut down, with, in the middle, a mass of dead leaves. That is also the place where the female produces her young. That hedgehog-home is close to a fence and well shaded by a shrubbery of Azaleas and Camellias. Set up something like that in your garden, this month, and you may find that Prickly Norman and his wife joins you. Back to the edibles....apples and pears are often harvested in September. But beware that, though many varieties can be harvested this month, some should be stored so that they can slowly improve in texture and flavour. For instance, Conference pears picked on 5 September will taste better on the 25 th September!

Malcolm Greenhalgh Newton-le-Willows Gardeners’ Association’s Advice & Sales Hut, on Rob Lane, is open Saturday and Sunday mornings, 10.30- noon. The Flower & Vegetable Show is open to the public from 2pm, at Penkford School, Wharfe Road, Newton, on Saturday 7 September. All welcome.
