From the old Pensioners’ Hut to a pizzeria with purpose If you grew up in Lowton, you might remember the old green Pensioners’ Hut on Newton Road. Or perhaps you remember Lowton Youth Club: Friday nights, loud music, cheap sweets and your first taste of independence. After years of decay, the old hut’s roof collapsed and the building became unsafe. Demolition was the only option, leaving an empty site and a little piece of Lowton’s history behind. But local resident Luke Brown saw an opportunity to create something new. Luke, owner of Lowton Rehab, a judo coach and community trustee, had led the redevelopment of Lowton Community Hub. His next idea was to bring a pizzeria to the site, with a purpose beyond serving great food: creating opportunities for young people. That idea became Dojo Pizza and Slice of Hope...

Great pizza, with a bigger purpose Built from three converted shipping containers, Dojo Pizza has transformed the site into a new pizzeria and outdoor community space. More than 18 months of work went into the project, with around 80 tonnes of soil and rubble cleared and more than 85% of materials reused. Local businesses, tradespeople, volunteers and families all played their part, including dads from the local judo club who helped move the 450kg stone pizza oven into position. And the pizza? The dough is fermented for 24 hours, topped with quality ingredients and stone-baked to order. The menu features classics such as margherita and deluxe pepperoni, alongside house favourites and vegetarian options. All made to order for collection. Local judo families have already been putting the pizzas to the test on training nights after gradings. But the food is only part of the story.
A new opportunity for young people Through Slice of Hope, Dojo Pizza aims to give young people practical experience in food preparation, food hygiene and teamwork, helping them develop skills, confidence and a sense of responsibility. The longer-term ambition is to establish a youth development board, giving young people a say in shaping the project and the wider community, and to work with Lowton Community Hub to deliver three community events each year.
There is a connection here to the Lowton Youth Club many people remember: somewhere to go, something to do and the chance to feel part of something. Dojo Pizza won’t recreate those Friday nights, but it hopes to offer a new generation its own opportunities and sense of belonging. The project also reflects a principle from judo: Seiryoku Zenyo — making the best use of available resources. By reusing materials and bringing people together, a neglected site has become something with a future. The ambition is simple: great pizza can help create great opportunities. Sometimes, the best way to honour the past is to build something for the next generation.
