Welcome to the May issue of Local Living This is the hardest Editor’s letter I’ve had to write in the 3 years I have been producing Local Living. In a time where no-one knows from day to day what the future holds it genuinely warms my heart to see the community pulling together.

This issue I have focussed on a number of things. Mainly trying to offer over as much information as I can about all our wonderful local businesses. Please, now more than ever before, keep using them. As I have mentioned more than once throughout this issue #stayloyal staylocal.

Covid 19 Updates from Wigan Borough Council If home isn’t a happy place for you, please know that you aren’t alone and there is help and support available.

Recycling centres now open The borough’s three household waste recycling centres have now reopened for essential visits. Essential visits refers to additional waste that has been generated due to spending more time at home. To ensure the safety of staff and visitors, there are strict measures in place to ensure social distancing guidelines are followed. One of these measures includes only allowing one person per vehicle to site.

We’ve launched a virtual In Bloom competition so you can still show off your hard work. The categories are: • Junior garden (open to those •

aged 15 and under) Container garden (includes hanging baskets, house plant displays, front step/ patio planters, and window/balcony boxes) Edible garden Most beautiful place Most creative garden.

• • • A shortlist of three in each category will be chosen by our Borough in Bloom committee and the final winners will be chosen by a public online vote on our Facebook page.

Clap for Carers We hope you’re joining us to clap for our amazing carers and key workers each Thursday at 8pm. We’re aware there is a group encouraging people to release lanterns for the occasion, however this is not recommended by the fire service due to the risk of increased fires and to wildlife. You’re showing your support just by clapping as loud as you can.

The 8th May 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (commonly known as VE Day). This year, the government moved the May bank holiday to VE Day to allow the nation to celebrate.

A number of events had been scheduled, both nationally and locally to mark the occasion.

Sadly, given the restrictions due to Covid-19, these events have been cancelled. However, the government has published digital resources to help residents celebrate at home. Locally, we’ll also be launching our own plan to help residents celebrate the occasion.
