Welcome to the May Issue of Local Living Wow I can’t believe it’s the two year Anniversary issue! Time really does fly when you’re having fun.

This issue is, as always, a mix of fantastic local businesses, stories and information about local people, places and things to do. The main feedback I get is that people enjoy reading the magazine as it’s a truly local mag. If you have a story you would like to tell, maybe you’re fundraising for a charity close to your heart? Polly’s story...

So here goes... it all started in January 2018 I started with a numbness in my face. I didn't think nothing of it then in July the symptoms started getting worse. I started with tingling in my arms and the left side of my face kept going numb. I went on holiday I just thought it was stress being a support worker as sometimes it can be mentally draining even if it's the best job I've ever had. It’s really rewarding. Then, on the 9th of August, I fell ill. I got taken into Wigan hospital where I was treated for encephalitis for 2 months. These were the worst 2 months of my life so frustrating of not knowing what was happening to my brain. The specialist not knowing and the doctors didn't have a clue what was going on. I asked to be referred to Salford where I was under a wonderful surgeon Mr Matt bailey who was very interested in what was happening. After all the CT and MRI scans it showed that I had a tumour. I then had my first surgery in November. This was a very hard time for our family but having a wonderful partner who supported me and did everything for me, Abi and Andrew along with being very supportive. With all the worry we all stayed strong and positive having wonderful friends and family. So after the biopsy Salford struggled to determine exactly what it was. They couldn't understand why my histology wasn’t matching up to what my brain was doing. During the next couple of months of frustrating waiting and still not knowing we still had no answers. More MRI scans more blood test it was like it was never ending. But yet I still had wonderful support of my partner when I got upset and angry. After another MRI scan it had doubled in size; 2 grape sizes to be precise so in for the second surgery in February. It was a quick and good operation even though I stopped breathing on the operating table. They managed to get me breathing again. 7 hours later my partner waited for me all day from going in to coming onto the ward. All I wanted was my Janine and my kids oh and then a coffee lol. During this experience I had a world rebound guy who does test on tumours and he was stumped. It took another month before getting any results and this was when I got the verdict, it was bad news. It was a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme that they say is incurable but I don’t believe this! I started treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy tablets. 30 sessions of intense therapy but during this time, after 17 sessions, I fell ill and ended up back in hospital for a week. This still didn't keep me down and I'm going to keep fighting with all I have to beat this. Hopefully having people read my story will give them hope and teach them to never give in. Stay positive and win! I now have 10 sessions left until I ring that victory bell to say I've completed my treatment at wonderful Christie's at Salford. The staff are friendly and nothing is to much trouble. They make you feel good and keep you positive but also have an ear if you are ever worried or need to just have a rant. But most of all I couldn't do this without the great support of everyone especially my wife to be and children. All my love to Janine my partner, Abi and Andrew, families and friends. Thank you.

Life is too short, follow your dreams Back in Aug 2017 sat on our sun loungers in Turkey we started to talk about our dream to open our own funeral directors. After serving the local areas of Golborne and Lowton whilst working at a local independent funeral directors for over 20 years between us, and with Sue having worked at corporate funeral directors adding a further 5 years experience, we felt it was time to chase that dream. In the October of 2017 we started to see the dream becoming a reality as we got keys to our premises and got to work straight away. The following months were hard work with family and friends all mucking in with the tedious wallpaper stripping, cleaning up, painting etc. As well as working full time, juggling two boys going to school, and playing football at weekends, sometimes our 'family time' was spent with the four of us with wallpaper scrappers in hand until 10pm and chippy teas sat on an upside down bucket for a chair. With all this in mind it was all worth it in the end as we started to see things take shape.

In February this year we celebrated our first year in business and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the local area, our families and friends for trusting, supporting and believing in us.

Sue started her career as a funeral arranger in 2007 after the sudden death of her fiancĂŠ. Chocolate collection for The Brick Children at St Thomas’ have been collecting Easter eggs and chocolate goodies for The Brick in Wigan. St Thomas’ have been a big supporter of The Brick for some time and the children enjoy being able to donate to the charity as they know the importance of the food bank to those families in need. The children really wanted to donate Easter eggs and to help put a smile on the face of children whose family need the support of the food bank.

During the last week of Spring term, St Thomas’ enjoyed a music enrichment week organised by Mrs Starkie. The children got to listen to different genres of music which they then interpreted through art, writing and technology. Wigan Music Service provided the school with a set of steel drums which all classes had the opportunity to experience and learn a piece of music. The children were also able to learn about composing music using class sets of glockenspiels and iPads. Teachers were very impressed with the level of musical ability throughout the school. St Thomas’ have a number of enrichment weeks throughout the year which the children always look forward to and enjoy

“N’er cast a clout till May be out!” is an old folks’ expression, but it is absolutely spot on! But ‘May’ doesn’t mean the month of May, but the flower ‘may’ which is an alternative name of the hawthorn. Hawthorn traditionally flowers on St Mark’s Day, the 25th April, and is named after the patron saint of Venice with whom I share a birthday! This year, look carefully at the scented white blooms and you might see a long-legged glossy black fly feeding on the hawthorn pollen. That is the hawthorn fly whose scientific name is Bibio marci, marci after St Mark. So, now that the hawthorn is out you can plant out the half hardy tender annuals like begonias, geraniums and petunias, and perennials that you brought in over winter, like dahlias, that frost would kill.

Most of us who grow tomatoes grow the tall varieties, which need side shoots removed, in greenhouses. But you don’t need a greenhouse.

Why not grow, in biggish pots, low-growing bush varieties? This year I am growing the variety Garden Pearl that produces lots of marble sized, red, sweet juicy fruits that children love to eat one after the other, straight from the plant. And if you have a child or grandchild who says, “I don’t like tomatoes!”, let them taste one and the next dozen will go rapidly. All that these bush varieties need is a pot in the sun and a liquid tomato feed once the first flowers have set.

You don’t need a big garden to grow some great food. I rarely grow salad crops in my garden vegetable beds and instead use containers; plastic boxes 25cm (10”) deep are ideal, filled with potting compost. Try lettuce varieties Hilde, Lollo Rosso and Little Gem for three different flavours and textures. I sow a tiny pinch of each (10-15 seeds = a tiny pinch) in a seed tray every three weeks and then prick out the seedlings 7.5cm (3”) apart, mixing the varieties up. When the plants are touching, I cut every other one and we eat them. And eventually I end up with six full grown lettuces in my larger boxes. Two or three boxes, kept in the sun or semi-shade, and you can have lettuces far better than supermarket ones most of the year.

A golden gardening rule: Any tree or shrub that flowers before July (i.e. midsummer) should be pruned immediately it has finished flowering. That includes buddleias, mock oranges, forsythias, camellias and so on. Trees and shrubs that flower after the end of June are pruned late next winter or very early spring, and that includes hydrangeas and roses. The reason for this difference is that early flowering shrubs and trees have next year’s flowers on wood that will grow after they have flowered in MLSgardenservices summer and autumn (July-September), whereas later flowering plants bloom on wood that QUALITY LANDSCAPING grows in that year’s spring and very early summer (February in mild years to July).

The Brick and Wigan Athletic hosted the 2019 DW Stadium Sleep on Friday April 5 and together raised an amazing £8,000 for the charity The night was a great success with over £8,000 raised for the charity by the individuals, local community groups and businesses from across the Wigan and Leigh borough who took part on the night. Latics and The Brick held the DW Stadium Sleep to raise money towards the charity’s main premises, The Brick Works, where people in crisis can begin to construct a new life through training and employment. Those taking part in the event swapped the comfort of their beds for a sleeping bag and cardboard to sleep on.

All the participants enjoyed a hot soup supper, entertainment from Lee and John from local band Grapefruit and inspirational speeches from The Brick CEO Louise Green and Head of Trustees John Parker who gave thanks to everyone who has supported the event.

The Brick CEO Louise Green said: “"The evening was a great success and we are extremely grateful for the support of everyone who joined us at The DW Stadium Sleep. We managed to raise an incredible £8,000 do far with even more donations pledged and every penny of the money raised will go towards helping people in crisis, in our community, to begin rebuilding their lives.

“We also want to thank Wigan Athletic for not only supporting The Brick for a second year as their charity of the season but for allowing us to hold this great event in their stadium. Each and every time we ask for the help and support of the people in our community we are always are humbled by the incredible response and the number of people who want to get involved."

Jonathan Jackson, Wigan Athletic Chief Executive, said: “To raise £8,000 is an incredible achievement and credit to The Brick for ensuring the DW Stadium Sleep was another great success this year. The relationship between the charity and the football club has been hugely positive over the past two years and the work carried out to help rebuild lives across Wigan has been fantastic.

He added: “I’d like to particularly thank Andy Birch and Craig Horrocks from the DW Stadium for their outstanding support and organisation of the event.”

The DW Stadium Sleep is just one part of the Brick and Wigan Athletics charity partnership for a second season and the funds raised are going towards the £100,000 goal. 5th May Try Sailing in May

18th & 19th May Kenyon Hall Fair

Come and join us and Push The Boat Out at our open day held in partnership with Wigan Sailing Club. There will be free sailing taster sessions available to all. Take to the water and talk to our friendly staff, instructors and club members about the opportunities available for you to get afloat more regularly.

Discounted hire will be running on the day, with kayaks and canoes available for £3 per person and SUP hire will be available for £5 per person for a 45 minute session. A range of food, drinks and refreshments will be available to purchase from the sailing club.

There is no need to book onto the open day, just turn up and bring a change of clothes and shoes that can get wet.

Ken’s off to the Palace 14 years ago I began reading with pupils in St Luke', Lowton, Primary School. Our son Ben was a pupil here and with the strong drive instilled in him at st Luke's he has achieved the dream of getting to University. I have now read with over 400 pupils over the years and my respect for the pupils and staff has been at the highest level. I know I have been valued for being able to look for positives for children of all abilities and have also been an active school governor all that time, another role I have done with honesty and integrity.

7 years ago Slag Lane, Lowton's Doctor's Practice formed their Patient's group, from the first day I have been Chair working with some wonderful fellow patients plus the dedicated Doctors and Staff. Our group is simply so positive as we represent patients at various area meetings, I am proud of all of our team as we share attendance around the borough at these meetings About 8 years ago I was made safeguarding Officer for St Mary's, Lowton church. This is a duty I take seriously in many walks of life. Our church is a big positive in my life and also with Debbie and our Ben as well. I also hire out the hall which sounds easier than reality but helps me be an active church member.

I love Golborne In Bloom. Claire Baker started this group 4 years ago and I began to co-lead the group with Claire to help improve the Golborne Town Centre area, specifically Napier Gardens, across from the Napier Arms, Peter Kane Square, the Library and car park and biggest of all the banking down Tanners Lane. I am so proud of this team, a hard core of 8 of us in all weathers just plodding on and receiving much appreciation from passers-by.

We have also worked with young offenders, trying to get them to see the right choices, not lecturing just trying to inspire them.

I have also a small role with the amazing Wigan Carers at Hindley, they really do have my respect.

This year I have had links also with St Thomas, Golborne, Golborne High School and St John Rigby College, Wigan.

So when an official envelope arrived I thought nothing of it. Debbie opened it and it was a letter to say I had been nominated to be a guest at a garden party at Buckingham Palace on May the 14th. All I have done has been time given freely for no reward, I have helped in schools, in the community and even spoke at 3 Senior Citizens Centres, giving talks on Nostalgia, to enthuse them. I never expected any acclaim but now we look forward to the Palace. I want to say a big 'THANKS' to all the pupils, the different staffs and members of all the groups for giving me so much quiet pleasure, fun and pride in working with you all.

Our April meeting included a duet named So Far So Good, who sang a variety of country style well known songs, allowing our ladies to have a good sing along!! The chaps were very good and even joined in with gusto to sing Jerusalem to open our meeting.

St Thomas’ Eco team have been busy as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Big Spring Clean-up. This week, and with the help of Golborne In Bloom, they organised a litter pick of the field outside the school grounds. It was sad to see the amount of litter around but it made them more determined to pick up as much as possible and make a difference to the community. They work very hard on improving the environment, helping to save the planet and educating their peers on waste and recycling. They managed to collect three large bin bags full of rubbish and have made it their mission to do regular litter picks to keep the area as clean as possible

PLEASE NOTE, Due to the club being used as a polling station, our May meeting will be held on the SECOND Thursday of the month 9th May at 7.15 pm at Lowton Social Club on Newton Road. The subject this evening is called "Dogs for Good."....this will show how dogs work as assistant dogs to help people with disabilities to live an independent life. For anyone thinking about joining the WI and would like to arrange a visit, please phone Lin Hayes on 01942 207764. Visitors are made very welcome, so please come along and join us. Our meeting in June should be as normal on the first Thursday 6th June when it's our Strawberry Treat.

Lowton West Residents Meeting Residents in Lowton West (west side of Slag Lane and adjacent roads including Scott Road estate) have decided to form a non-political neighbourhood group to discuss local issues and work together to improve our area. A Constitution has been agreed and a committee formed with all posts being filled by volunteers. Meetings will take place on the last Tuesday of each month, 7.30pm in the Community Room at Manor Court and elected representatives will be invited along regularly to address residents concerns. Why not come along and find out what is happening in our local area and make some new friends?

Local Slimming World groups have donated 300 bags of clothes, shoes , bags and accessories to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Lowton Travelodge and Heath Street Golborne have joined Slimming World’s ‘Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw’ and have their donations have added up to a value of around £7,500! As part of Slimming World’s 50th year celebrations one lucky member found one of the special Golden Bags and won a personal styling experience and shopping trip to London.

A huge congratulations to Vicki Jones, consultant at Lowton Travel lodge, along with some of her Saturday morning members, for completing the Manchester Marathon.

Members will be taking part in Race for life at Pennington Flash on June 2nd.
