The thought of spring cleaning might be even less appealing when you remember to add your oven to that long list of tasks. However, husband and wife team Paul and Andrea Clark, who run oven valeting service Ovenu Warrington, are urging householders and landlords not to avoid one of the most detested of all household chores. “Cleaning the oven is one important job often overlooked,” said Paul. “You’d be surprised at how many loathe the task and would rather leave it another day – or month!” Over time food and grease sticks to the hot plating, grills, and metal trays which, if ignored, will burn whenever the oven is used. This encourages the build-up of bacteria and leaves the oven less efficient, meaning food may be undercooked. A clean oven saves on energy bills and improves the quality and taste of food – banishing those smells created by accumulated grease and grime, which can also pose a fire hazard. Andrea added: “More people have been at home cooking and baking during the pandemic, which means more ovens that usual will need a thorough clean.” Ovenu Warrington, is accepting bookings at its discretion, with the stipulation that both parties observe the two-metre social distancing rule, along with guidelines on hygiene and cleanliness. Paul, a former nurse and social worker, said: “We take the safety of our clients very seriously and follow a series of strict Covid-secure procedures, something that we’ve been complimented on in our five-star client reviews.” The valeting process involves dismantling key components and placing them in design-registered tank equipment. Using safe, non-caustic and biodegradable cleaning products, the oven is returned to near showroom condition. Ashes to silver was founded by myself, Tracy Leach. After a mini course to make my own rings I caught the bug. I fell in love with silversmithing and signed up for a course. I decided to develop the ashes range when I lost my Mum. I couldn't find anything that was ‘quite right’ as a fitting tribute so, after a number of years perfecting these pieces, they are now available for you to have special memorial pieces of your very own. Depending on the piece chosen your ashes will be fused into Sterling Silver or hair imprinted with a unique process. You could chose different colours (even a sprinkle of glitter) if you wanted your piece encased in a high grade jewellers resin. I have made many pieces over the years and I am currently developing a range specifically for pets that you may have lost. I pride myself on a very personal service and, as with every piece produced for Ashes to Silver there is a lot of love and care taken from start to finish. Based from a little workshop in Lowton (well my back garden!) every order is hand made from start to finish by me. As every piece is made to order please feel free to get in touch if you would like something a little different.

This month’s spotlight is on C.J. Harter, author of the captivating Rowan’s Well and suspenseful Fitful Head. A local author, Harter has
over fifteen years of experience in both writing and professional editing, and runs a successful proofreading and editing business alongside writing her own thrilling novels. Harter specialises in psychological suspense, and her reviews certainly speak to her expertise in the genre. You don’t have to look far to find glowing testimonials from satisfied readers, and many of her past students and editing clients - like David Beckler, author of the Mason and Burgess crime series, and JF Burgess, author of the DI Tom Blake series - are already looking forward to working with her on future projects. All authors, consciously or not, tend to draw from their own experiences in their work, and Harter has plenty of experience under her belt, but the one that fascinated me the most when researching her was her experience with human dissection at Sheffield University. Speaking of the experience and how it impacted her work, Harter said: “It’s hard to deny your own mortality when you spend many hours looking it in the face. The smell of the formaldehyde used to preserve the cadavers is hard to forget. But it was a great place to observe human behaviour: so many different reactions and ways of coping with a surreal situation.” This ability to observe and consider human behaviour became invaluable as Harter started to find her writing process asking “what if”. Through casually observing people around her, Harter soon finds herself “working out who will do what next, who will be the hero of the piece, and who the villain,” and from there a thrilling novel begins to emerge. However, as I mentioned, Harter does more than write her own novels. When a writer friend encouraged her to go into proofreading and editing work, something she already enjoyed, Harter realised she could turn another hobby into a successful career. Just like with her novels, outstanding reviews for her editing services aren’t hard to find. So, what’s coming next from C.J. Harter? Well, fans of her stirring crime novels will be happy to hear she is currently working on a Manchester-based crime series. While a step up from her solo novels, Harter says it’s “great fun” to work on a wider series, so it sounds like there are plenty more captivating stories in the works. Links to all of Harter’s work, including the free short story The Haydock Haunting, can be found on her website: cjharterbooks.co.uk
