With COVID measures in place our members enjoyed a lovely Hot Pot supper, followed by fun and games and the usual raffle. Some members received certificates to celebrate 10 years membership. One of our ladies, Margaret Thornton, was awarded her 20 year membership certificate, congratulations to those ladies and thank you for the hard work and fundraising over the years. Bringing the evening to a close our Choir sang Carols, although just a little bit rusty as we hadn’t sung together for a couple of years, we did get a fit of the giggles, which in turn had the members laughing and singing along with us. Sadly, due to COVID Santa couldn’t visit this year but nevertheless, we each brought a secret Santa gift to pass on so no-one left empty handed. There will not be a meeting in January as our members have their New Year meal. achieved her 9 Stone Award! All the way through her weight loss journey, Lianne said she would never attend a gym. However in June, Vicki challenged Lianne to give it a try and she’s never looked back! Now fitter and leaner than ever, her Friday nights will never be the same. Santa Dash for Disability Awareness! Double amputee Jill Doran took part in Warrington Disability Partnership’s “Santa Dash,” raising over £1,200 for charity! While most of the Santa’s ran or walked the 3k course at Walton Hall & Gardens, Jill, aged 59, a double amputee above the knee, who has survived more than 40 operations and a heart attack, did a “bum shuffle.” As well as helping raise funds for WDP, her biggest goal was to raise awareness and funds for Dog A.I.D which has been her saviour not just physically, but mentally too. Jill was diagnosed with Charcot Marie Tooth disease at just 15, a disease that she was told affects the bottom half of the legs, with nerves dying off and preventing the muscles from working. It wasn’t until many years later that she realized it did far more than that. Fast forward to 2007, and she was given the unthinkable ultimatum of fusing her right leg or removing it entirely. However, when the fusion ended up as even more of a hindrance than her pain had been, amputation was the only option, which Jill went through with in 2008. It was around this time that she started taking her Italian Spinone, ‘Minnie’, to dog training classes, where she met the trainer Peta Brandwood who helped her with the basics. A few months later, Peta became a volunteer trainer for the charity Dog A.I.D. (“Assistance in Disability”), and got in touch with Jill to see if she was familiar with the organisation. Dog A.I.D. (D.A.) was established in 1992 to assist people with physical disabilities, improving their quality of life by helping them train their own pet dogs to provide assistance with day-to-day tasks and, in some circumstances, life-saving interventions. D.A. allocate a trainer to clients to help them, and also give them the tools to train their own pet dog, with training workshops happening twice a year at Stoke Mandeville. The call came just in time for Jill. Just a few years later, in 2015, she was faced with the same ultimatum for her left leg. After once again attempting fusion surgery, and once again finding it unliveable, she opted for a second amputation in 2016. But Jill’s current life would be even more difficult if it wasn’t for the support of Dog A.I.D., from both their volunteer trainers and the service dogs they provide. As a non-profit, Dog A.I.D. relies entirely on the generosity of others, from donations to volunteers. Jill’s incredible fundraising efforts to give back to the organisation that supported her will no doubt be appreciated, and her determination and strength shines an important light on both the charity and her condition.
