Welcome to the October issue of Local Living

Keeping Up The Pace With Walking Football

It’s officially Spooky Season! Halloween is only a few weeks away, and then the countdown to Christmas really begins. It’s looking to be a bit of a different holiday season to last year, which is something we can all celebrate. This issue, we have a follow up on Golborne local Shelley Benbow and her charitable efforts, as well as a whole host of advertisers who will soon be setting up for the holiday period. Now is a great time to start thinking about gifts - be they physical presents or a new experience to give a loved one! We here at Local Living hope that all our readers are looking forward to this holiday season, and staying safe on the lead-up to make sure this will be a Christmas to remember! As always if you have any stories you think we’d love here at Local Living, get them over to us to share in future magazines.

Over 50s in Wigan can net a new experience and get fit with walking football sessions taking place every week. Age UK and Be Well Wigan have joined to offer the slow-paced version of the beautiful game which is aimed at helping over 50s to keep fit and healthy. After the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic the charity want to help people get out and get active. Organiser Steven Edwards, of Age UK Wigan Borough, said: “Walking football is a great way to get out and meet new people, have fun and keep fit and healthy. It follows the traditional rules of football but without any contact and you walk instead of run. We play on a smaller pitch with smaller goals that are similar to those on a five-a side pitch, and the ball stays below head height. It doesn’t matter what your ability is we are open to all men and women over the age of 50.” The sessions run at Howe Bridge Sports Centre, in Atherton, every Monday from 10.30am until 11.30am and every Tuesday from 11am until 12pm. If you would like to find out more or take part contact Steven Edwards at Age UK Wigan on 01942 615880 or email: steven.edwards@ageukwiganborough.org.uk For more details about the work of Age UK Wigan Borough go to the website www.ageuk.org.uk

CoppaFeel Charity Success When Golborne local Shelley Benbow joined a trek through the Scottish Highlands to raise money for breast cancer charity CoppaFeel, she set her target at a respectable £1,500. Through hiking, raffling and a lot of hard work, her total now stands at an amazing £2,335, and the trekkers total at an astounding £336k! CoppaFeel is the first breast cancer charity in the UK to solely create awareness amongst young people, making sure that young people are regularly checking their boobs/pecs and know their bodies to be able to have the confidence to see their GP if something doesn't feel normal. Contributions to the trek not only support the trekkers, but directly impact the work that CoppaFeel is able to do to make sure breast cancer is caught earlier in young people. We here at Local Living would like to extend a huge thank you to all our readers who contributed and helped Shelley SMASH her goal, no matter the contribution! Charities don’t raise money from huge donations - it’s the £5s, £10s and £15s from people who give what they can that add up, and add up fast! Whether buying a raffle ticket, supporting Shelley’s hike, or donating to CoppaFeel directly, you contribute to a great cause and help more people than you will ever know. If you missed Shelley’s hike but still want to help out, you can still donate directly on the CoppaFeel website! https://coppafeel.org/give/ My total raised is £2,335. Total raised from all trekkers & celebs currently stands at £336k and still going! Team Emma routes were Day 1 - Schiehallion, Day 2 - Rob Roy Way, Day 3 - Beinn Dearg, Day 4 - Ben Lawers, Day 5 - Glen Lyon
