HAND DELIVERED TO LOWTON AND GOLBORNE HOMES

Welcome to the July issue of Local Living Well, it has been quite a month! Unfortunately, we still have a few more weeks than expected before life can start going back to normal, but what’s a few extra weeks after a whole year? Before we know it, the world will be opening back up, and hopefully we’ll even have a little bit of summer left to celebrate with! In this issue we have some great local news stories, as well as even more local businesses excited to be welcoming you back. Here at Local Living, we also have some secret news that we can’t wait to share with you all, so keep your eyes peeled in the next couple of issues for that! We hope all our readers are staying safe and healthy, and we can’t wait to see you all (finally!) on the other side of lockdown.

Love, The Joneses x

What’s On Guide

Brain haemorrhage charity pledges £300,000 to University of Manchester in memory of former student The Natalie Kate Moss Trust has committed to raising £300,000 for the University of Manchester to fund further research into brain haemorrhage. The Leigh charity, based at Moss Industrial Estate, was set up in 2012 following the sudden death of 26-yearold University of Manchester alumni, Natalie Moss, from a brain haemorrhage. Over the last ten years, the charity has funded many scholarships for students attending the university who have suffered a brain injury and has made a number of smaller donations to support research activities. This latest donation is a significant commitment from the charity, and will fund the salary and running costs of a post-PhD research fellow for three and a half years, within the stroke research team at the recently opened Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre. Haemorrhagic stroke – otherwise known as brain haemorrhage – is a subtype of stroke. Around half of all patients who experience this type of stroke will die, and this death rate has changed very little in the past thirty years. This is in stark contrast to other diseases that have seen death rates reduce substantially over that time. There is currently no successful treatment for haemorrhagic stroke – making this is a key area of research focus for the Manchester Stroke Group. The university’s strengths in Neuroscience research and links with the UK’s largest clinical stroke centre make Manchester particularly well-placed to lead the search for better treatments. Natalie’s sister and co-founder of the Natalie Kate Moss Trust, Fiona Moss, recently shared her sister’s story as part of the University of Manchester’s own stroke research appeal, helping it to raise over £100,000 to fund a three-and-a-half-year PhD student who will work alongside the new research fellow. Together, the new researchers will increase capacity in the Manchester stroke team and support the search for life-saving new treatments. Professor Stuart Allan, from the University of Manchester, said: “We are incredibly grateful for this fantastic commitment from the Natalie Kate Moss Trust and I am so proud to lead the team of researchers who are currently undertaking ground-breaking work in stroke. This commitment to £300,000 funding will enable us to attract and support a very talented young scientist and to fund their work over the next three and a half years, helping them to launch their research career as well as build capacity in our expanding haemorrhagic research team.” To find out more about the Natalie Kate Moss Trust, visit www.nataliekatemoss.co.uk.

Electrical wholesaler opens new premises in Leigh Independent electrical wholesaler, LPD Electrical, has moved into new premises at Moss Industrial Estate. The move offers its domestic and trade customers greater accessibility as well as a much larger range of products. LPD was founded in Leigh in 1997 and offers a wealth of electrical and wiring products to commercial and industrial customers, as well as to the general public. The business operates two further branches - Southport which opened in 1999, and Old Trafford, which opened in 2007. Its head office in Leigh was previously based in a much smaller unit at the back of the industrial estate but, after years of steady growth, founder Vincent Priest is driving the business forward by moving it to a very prominent and much larger 4,000 sq ft unit directly on St. Helens Road, at the main entrance of the estate. Vincent Priest, founder and managing director of LPD Electrical, said: “Our new unit is much bigger and brighter than our old unit and it is extremely visible. We have had so many people dropping in asking if we are a new business, because they have never seen us before. We now have a huge front counter to serve our customers and we can display more stock out front, as well as a much larger range of goods in our warehouse area.” Moss Industrial Estate is owned by family-run business, George Moss & Sons, which celebrated its centenary in 2020. The Industrial Estate is home to around 100 local businesses of varying sizes and industries. Fruity Pork Kebabs With Streaky Bacon Cooking Time: 15 Mins

Serves 6

For the Kebabs:

• • • •

225g lean pork leg of loin steaks, fat removed, cut into small cubes 12 rashers unsmoked sweet cured streaky bacon 1 peach or nectarine, stone removed and cut into 6 wedges 1 banana, peeled and cut into 6 chunks

For the Chilli BBQ Sauce:

• • • • • • •

1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 Tablespoon Oil 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped

3 tablespoons tomato ketchup 1 tablespoon brown sauce 300ml pineapple juice

1) Heat up the BBQ – Make sure the coals are hot and ‘grey’ before you start cooking. Alternatively if it starts to rain preheat the grill! 2) Take each piece of fruit and wrap with a bacon rasher. Using metal skewers thread each pieces of fruit plus 2 cubes of meat onto each skewer. Brush with oil. 3) Cook for about 15 minutes until browned and meat cooked through and juices run clear. Cover the kebabs with foil, if browning too quickly or adjust the grid height to move away from the heat to slow down the cooking. 4) To prepare the chilli BBQ Sauce: Heat the oil in a small pan. Add the onion, apple and chilli, and cook until softened. Add the remaining ingredients, bring to the boil and simmer for about 10 minutes to reduce slightly. 5) Serve kebabs with the BBQ sauce and a fruity slaw. https://www.lovepork.co.uk/recipes/fruity-pork-kebabs-with-streaky-bacon/
