Local Nature - By John K Bannon

Soon the night’s will be drawing and our local wildlife; birds; mammals and insects will be preparing for the winter ahead.

By the end of October most of our summer migrant birds; such as Swallows; House and Sand Martins will have left as they need aerial insects to catch for food.

Swifts have already left on their long journey to Africa and our local Reed and Sedge Warblers; Whitethroats and Garden Warblers will join them in the exodus. Our local resident birds, such as Sparrows; Robins; Blackbirds; Blue and Great Tits; Collared Doves and Wood Pigeons will remain and visit your garden bird table more regularly. Many of our winter Robins are visitors from northern climes too and they are the only bird that regularly sings through the winter days.

Please make sure you take the opportunity to clean your garden feeders to prevent diseases spreading; especially as the UK has had many cases of Avian flu this year. Just wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

Winter also sees a massive influx of visitors to our area from further north; especially from Scandinavia; Iceland and Russia. Thrushes like Fieldfares and Redwings devour the hawthorn berries and some years we get beautiful Waxwings, who particularly like Rowan and Cotoneaster berries. All will also visit your garden; especially if you put out or leave windfall apples

You should also see large flocks of Starlings, many also from Russia; swirling around in their co-ordinated ‘murmurations’ at dusk, before they roost together for the night. With the warming climate, our winters are becoming less severe and some birds are remaining with us; rather than flying south. Two warblers, the Chiffchaff and the Blackcap are now regularly doing so and visit our gardens. The bright yellow flowers of Winter Jasmine provide nectar and are a favourite. Penny Flash and Three Sisters host many ducks, geese and other water birds and Byrom Hall woods is also full of interesting wildlife. I have seen the shy, but now quite common, Roe Deer there, plus the odd suburban fox.
