The English Karate Academy –NationalTeamhavereturned home from another successful International Karate Competition at the end of March. The Squad competed in the Malta Open 2024 – featuring over 1000 competitors from 33 countriesinattendance.

This year we took a smaller Squad of just 14 competitors – plus coaches who won an incredible29medals betweenthem!

The English Karate Academy have Karate lessons for ages 4+atLeighSportsVillageand at our purpose built Dojo in Culcheth. New starters are alwayswelcome!

We teach traditional Shukokai Karate as well as the option for all students who want to compete at Karate competitions. Karate Kumite (or fighting) is very light contact – competitors are awarded points for controlled techniques / strikes/kickstotheheadand body.

Kata is a traditional form of Karate practice where competitors demonstrate a series of karate techniques –demonstrating, skill, power and focus –Katacompetitors are awarded points by 5 judgestomovethroughtothe nextround.

British, World and European Champions over the yearsour next International competition is the WUKF European Championships in Poland - October2024.

Twin Toilets

How

it all began:

Three grandma’s were having a chat with the vicar from St Thomas’ Church in Golborne where they found out that in some poorer countries there is no safe place for young girls to use the toilet. So Valerie , Margaret & Sylvia chucked a few coppers in a bag and set about raising the £60 needed to twin their first toilet. On hearing about the first one more members of the congregation soon raised enough for a 2nd toilet. Valerie's 7 year old grandson who attends St Thomas’ School gave his pocket money and before they knew it another toilet was twinned.

Margaret's Slimming World Group at Lowton raffled a bottle of champagne and raised the next £60 in 30 minutes and the 4th toilet was twinned.

The ladies are now raising money for their 5th toilet.

It's a Family Affair

Andrea, Lee and their daughter have done amazing losing over 13 stone between them since they started last. They have all made so many positive changes and created some brilliant positive habits such as walking during their lunch hour and being prepared with their meals to help them stay on track. Jenna their consultant at Golborne says... "I know they are going to go all the way to target and I can't wait to see their smiles grow whilst they're clothes size shrinks"

Mum Andrea who has lost 4 st 7lb says.... "We'd tried Slimming World as a couple before but although we'd always start off for a few weeks with the best of intentions, after a couple of months, old habits would start creeping in and we'd be back to square one.

Our mindsets have completely changed this time round. We individually decided we were joining group, and though we really do support each other at home, its our own journeys we are on, so whilst we do watch each others syns, and give a mindful "do you really want that for your syns?" we just cheer each other on."

Cherie inspires her Husband

Our fabulous Golborne member Cherie achieved her target on 15th May losing the 2lb she needed to reach 2 stone 1.5lb a fantastic achievement.

Cherie says " its been a bumpy journey and took 1 year and 5 days to achieve, but it has all paid off, and it's been worth it, thank you Jenna for all your help and support, it has really kept me going and made me power on. Also to my group for all the great tips, and help, it reminded me not give up"

Cherie has done so well that she has inspired her husband to come along too who is also doing great.

Lowton WI

At our May WI meeting our speaker was Angie Fletcher who got to week 6 in The Great British Sewing Bee in 2022. Angie is a member of Buckshaw Village WI and applied as she was at a bit of a loose end in the lock down in April 2021. Angie had to add more strings to her bow as part of the process. Due to the restrictions in place at the time, she had to order fabric online which she had never done before and film all the segments of herself, her family and her daily activities. Of course as a member of the WI, all this was soon overcome and no-one was more surprised than she was as she kept getting through the stages to eventually appear on the show. Among the items Angie had to make were a garment incorporating macrame, trainers, a maxi-dress from an old duvet and Halloween spider. All the ladies thoroughly enjoyed Angie's talk and looking at the pieces she brought to show us. Well done Angie, you have done the WI proud!
