My name is Debbie Thomas and I am the creator of Deb’s DDs dance class. I was a professional dancer on Cruise ships and Shows for many years. I have since been flying as cabin crew for 27yrs but always had a longing to get back to my dancing roots as I missed it so much.

So back in 2017 I started Deb’s DDs. Debs DDs is a unique, fun filled, dance & exercise class with the most amazing set of ladies you could wish to meet. If you are looking to meet new friends, exercise in a fun and friendly none judgemental environment, then this is the class for you. You will love it.

It works on a block of four weeks. During those 4 weeks you will learn a full dance routine which can vary in genre from Disco Diva favourites to Broadway show tunes. For example a favourite of the group will always be the summer vibes that ‘Mama Mia’ brings.

Come and join us and let your inner show girl out and “Dance like nobody is watching!” Ideal for ladies of any age or ability who want to try something new.

GOLBORNE GIRLS U15’S Once again this team put the small village of Golborne on the map, with many seasons of fantastic football. This season they attracted some video messages of support from ex players such as Kevin Keegan, Paul Ince, Graeme Souness and the soccer Saturday presenters. Over the years the girls have had a massive amount of success, u8s and u9s they played against some tough strong boys teams, they fought on week in week out never giving up but instead inspiring their coaches Paul Walsh and Michelle Leatham. U10s they moved into the South Manchester Girls Football League, what a fantastic first of many seasons it turned out to be! They came league and cup runner up both to Manchester City ladies. U11s the girls worked hard from day one and completed the double with a league title and also league cup win. The winning didn’t stop there at u12s and u13s the girls won the league title making it three consecutive seasons and another two runners up in the cup. U14s was a tough season for the team with some big changes. However they battled on until the end and again worked to the end of the season. They managed to secure a place in the Lancashire county cup final, the first time for a team at Golborne Girls, they matched this with another league cup final. As the girls moved into u15s the team were more settled and playing quality football.

The girls again secured a place in the Lancashire county cup final, came league runner up, league cup runner up and eventually went on to break the curse of the finals winning the Challenge cup with a massive 6-1 score line with the captain scoring 5 of the goals.

In May Mark from The Bloomin Nursery visited the Rainbows and helped them revamp the planters. They all had a fabulous time and wanted to thank Mark for coming along. Mark is making great steps to bring the community together. In June he will be hanging 10 hanging baskets along Heath Street Golborne. He is donating them to brighten up the town. Also he has got 7 local businesses to have a basket and donate £10 to Golborne In Bloom to help them volunteers by more plants etc. There is an event on Peter Kane Square on 22nd June called The Let's get Together Event. This is to help raise awareness of social isolation and anyone who lives and feels alone. There are a few groups putting on a show with tables and chairs for the audience to sit, make new friends and enjoy the show. Also at this event Doingbits have offered to donate free tea, coffee and fruit juices to the audience. It will be a great event for all the community but mostly for anyone feeling lonely to meet friends. In 2020 Marks aim is to bring the community and businesses together permanently. What a funny year it has been! On 3 May I had to cover my new potatoes with fleece and clear polythene to prevent frosts on the early mornings of 4th and 5th hitting them! At least, we are in June and frosts are a thing of the past, ad we can get out the tenderest of plants.

Hanging baskets: there is still time to get a collection of thinks like begonias, dwarf fuchsias, pelargoniums (what used to be ‘geraniums’) and petunias into hanging baskets. One tip is to mix some water-retaining gel, which comes in powder form, to the compost so that the compost will hold water better. Another is to put an old washing-up sponge in the bottom of the basket before you start filling it, for that too will soak up lots of water. Tip two is to put in more plants that you think you need so that, through July and August the basket will be a mass of blooms. The same goes for containers holding the same annual flowers on the patio.

Flower beds: did you grow wallflowers or sweet williams? As soon as they have flowers, get them in the compost bin and cram in lots of flowers like dahlias, and bedding plants. Try to get flower beds that are a mass of colour and not breaks in boring soil!

Don’t forget to dead-head: As soon as flowers on the annuals or other bedding plants start to fade, whether in beds, hanging baskets or containers, remove them. That will result in the plants producing more flowers rather than seeds.

Dark corners: Most of us have some dark corner where the sun never shines. Of course, many ferns like a shady niche, but flowers?

Go WHITE! White Hydrangea arborescens ( a shrub), Digitalis purpurea albiflora (white spike),Liriope ‘Munroe White’ and many other plants with white flowers will grow happily in shade and, what is more, seem to glow there.

Watering: In dry spells, watering is essential, but if we suffer from a mega-drought as last summer, don’t waste water on the lawn. Lawns may go brown but as soon as the rains return they green up quickly.

It is far more important to keep the flower and vegetable beds well watered, and b y well watered give then a real dowsing every five days instead of a dampening every day. And ii is best to water in the late evening when things have cooled down.

Fruit: In June apple trees will drop some of their fruit. After this has happened, thin out to one fruit per 4-6” of branch. Similarly, thin out pears and plums. You will get fewer fruits, but the fruits will be bigger and better.

In the greenhouse: Keep feeding and watering tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. Most tomatoes need the side shoots removing, but I would take one of these shoots when about 4” long and pop it into a pot of compost. This will root and give you tomatoes after you have enjoyed those on the parent plant. Next month I will suggest a good way of storing things like tomatoes, peppers, and aubergines so that you can enjoy them through the winter.

In the vegetable plot: As soon as one crop has been harvested, sow or plant the next. For instance, when the broad beans are picked, put the old plants in the compost bin and get in perhaps a row of dwarf French beans, or bulb fennel (lovely with fish), or beetroot. Every bed in a veg. garden ought to produce at least two crops every year. E.g.

Overwintered spring cabbage (harvested April-May), could be followed by a late pea crop. This is the time to plant outdoor tomatoes or winter squashes in containers (buckets, tubs, old boxes).

Help The Brick Tackle Holiday Hunger this Summer!

Wigan charity, The Brick, launches its annual tin sculpture competition with schools across the borough, to raise awareness for the issue of ‘Holiday Hunger’ that many families face during the summer holidays.

The summer holidays are the highlight of the year for many children, but across Wigan and Leigh parents on low incomes can face stress and anxiety over whether they will be able to provide food for their families, at this time. With over 11,000* children living in poverty in Wigan, this years ‘Holiday Hunger’ campaign by The Brick is essential to help increase food supplies for the charity’s food bank, ready for the summer break.

The Brick has been running the Tin Sculpture Campaign for 5 years and their aim is to raise awareness of holiday hunger by encouraging schools across Wigan and Leigh to collect as many non-perishable food items as they can and to create a unique sculpture.

Golborne Slimming World were in the party spirit this week when they held their Man of the Year Competition. Consultant Julie Woodward said' I'm so proud of these guys, between them they have lost an amazing 21stone! Every week they inspire the group with their recipes and ideas. They are a huge part of our group and we love hearing how their week has gone.

From Syn free chips to Stroganoff recipes, and walking and even running, nothing phases these guys.

All the food collected goes to The Brick’s food bank to help the charity to meet the increase in referrals that happen each school holiday, especially during the long summer break.

Alice Coren, Reuse and Retail Manager at The Brick, said: “We want to encourage every school in Wigan and Leigh to join us in the fight against Holiday Hunger, by taking part in this year’s Tin Sculpture Competition.

“All schools need to do is to collect as many tins and packets of food as they can and create a fabulous piece of art! The schools need to take photographs or make a film and tell us why they collected the food and what their sculpture means. We will showcase every creation across The Brick’s social media pages and the top three winners will win some fantastic prizes.

If your school would like to get involved you just need to hold food collections, make your tin sculpture, and then send the final entry to alice@thebrick.org.uk by Friday the 28th June.

In June our meeting is back to normal on the first Thursday of the month at 7.15 pm and will be in the usual place at Lowton Social Club on Newton Road.

The meeting will be our Strawberry Treat evening to give us a taste of summer, I think all our members look forward to this as it is a real sweet treat. By Royal Appointment!

With a new suit for me, and an elegant blue dress, jacket and fascinator for Debbie, we decided to treat ourselves and travel First Class on the train from Wigan to London. This made it extra special as we received a superb breakfast, with frequent drinks and snacks served as we journeyed, with the train arriving in Euston on schedule.

It was the warmest day of the year, and we travelled through London on the tube, arriving at Green Park with time to spare. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the royal park to the gates of Buckingham Palace. Already a small queue of elegantly dressed guests had formed and we joined the line. Very soon there were thousands adding to the orderly queue which was now attracting the attention of visiting tourists. The gates were opened and our invitations were checked, and then we walked across the pink tarmac and through the central arch, passing the royal guards on sentry duty. After walking across the central courtyard we were welcomed into the Palace by a line of royal footmen. We made our way down the red carpeted corridors admiring the magnificent paintings, glass sculptures and huge displays of china on the walls.

We emerged onto the Terrace to see two huge white marquees on the lawn and two military brass bands positioned on each side of the lawn taking it in turns to play familiar tunes. We were lucky to secure a table and chairs, and took the opportunity to drink a welcoming cool fresh lemon drink as we basked in the sunshine. The staff efficiently served all guests to an amazing afternoon tea, with a choice of sandwiches and nine different varieties of cakes, including Victoria Sandwich, passionfruit tart, fruit cake and a chocolate mousse cake with a gold royal crest on top. Tea, iced coffee or apple juice accompanied this, and all served on white china.

The schedule indicated that the royal party would arrive at 4:00pm, and at precisely this time Prince Charles, Camilla and Princess Anne emerged onto the terrace and we all stood to attention as the National Anthem was played.. By this time around 8000 guests lined the route, some in uniform, some with chains of office, men in morning suits and lounge suits and ladies in beautiful outfits in every colour with hats and fascinators.

As the royal party made their way across the lawn, they met guests from all walks of life and all parts of the world. We were within a yard of Charles and Camilla, giving opportunities for some great photos for our album. When the royal party entered the royal tent for their own afternoon tea, we decided to walk around the magnificent gardens. There was a huge lake, an 18th century summerhouse and a gigantic stone vase, along with beautiful floral displays of roses, and rhodendrons and a small family of ducklings. There were some wild flower sections, but the lawned areas were entirely weed-free. We didn't find a single dandelion ! We even came across a tennis court that apparently Bjorg and McEnroe had played on.

After a full circuit, we took the opportunity to have a few more sandwiches and cake, and tried the delicious iced coffee, enjoying tunes from Les Misérables. Later as we stood on the terrace looking down on the vast crowds as the sun began to sink, the royal family departed quietly and the Yeomen of the Guard marched back into the palace, just inches from where we were standing. We then walked through the ground floor palace rooms to make our way to the exit, by a slightly different route, admiring huge floral displays, historic furniture and royal portraits on the walls.

It was an amazing experience and I felt humbled to receive this invitation in recognition of the voluntary and charity work I have been doing for many years in Golborne and Lowton. New rules allow photography so we were able to take over 100 photographs of our day which we have shared with our friends and family and will retain as a memory of a once in a lifetime experience.

However, it was back to normal the following morning, as I grabbed my trowel and set off at 8:30 am to meet the Golborne In Bloom group and continue our fun gardening and clearing tasks.

Local Mum Fran is responsible for setting up the Save a Babies life courses. This was after her own experiences when her son Thomas was saved from choking by the fire crew at Leigh fire station. She is hoping that these, along with the launch of the new save a childs life courses, can raise more awareness and help people.
