Welcome to the June Issue of Local Living Hello June! Ok those that know me know how much I love to chat! But this issue, other that to tell you that there is so much in here I’ve struggled to get it all in, I am handing my Editor’s letter over to tell you about the lovely ladies below…

If you do recognise any of them it will no doubt be if you have been to Cheeky Monkeys Playgroup. They have given their time for many years to run a local playgroup for the under 4’s.

They decided there was something missing in the community and decided that afternoon tea was a great way to bring everyone together (after all who doesn’t like cake!)

The events are monthly at the moment but, if this proves popular, they may do them more frequently. All profit goes back into running the events to make them bigger and better. Booking is essential and the next one is on Thursday 14th June. Good luck ladies!

Some fantastic celebrations going on for the Royal Wedding.

Here are some of the fabulous pictures you have sent through...

St John’s C. Of E. Primary school, part of The Keys Federation Academy Trust went all out and had a Royal Wedding extravaganza. The children of Year 4/5 and indeed the whole school dressed to impress in celebration of the royal nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. This was no small scale event. The whole event has been linked to the children’s learning and the children have worked in committees together to make the event happen. The children planned the whole day which included a wedding ceremony at St John’s Abram church, a wedding breakfast, speeches, a 2 tier wedding cake, a choreographed first dance and beautiful white doves. Special cars and ribbon covered minibuses brought the bridal party to the church. The children of the class played members of the royal family and celebrities. The choir sang the bride down the aisle and for the signing of the register. A 3 course meal was served to 90 guests and included speeches and the cutting of the cake. The whole school embraced the event. A real community effort helped to make the day so memorable. The local hairdresser did the children’s hair and nails. Chair covers and tablecloths were donated by Bounce A Lot. Ntertain gave us giant LOVE led lit letters. Tesco in Hindley donated bunting and food for the children’s garden party. All the school wore their best outfits, fascinators and heels. The idea which began as a suggestion from class teacher Sally Naylor, has become one of the largest events the school has ever been part of.

Believe in Golborne Group (formerly Golborne 5 year plan) This month's meeting, held at Golborne Library on Thursday 17th May, was once again a really well attended evening. This shows the concern our residents have in the future of our town and how willing they are to put in the time and effort to make improvements.

The meeting opened with a welcome from Susan Gambles, who outlined the background of the group, where we started and things achieved so far.

The major part of the meeting was to agree a constitution, which was carried unanimously and then to elect a committee. All posts were filled and four other members of our amazing community put themselves forward and were elected as committee members.

It was opened up to the meeting for suggestions of a topic to be addressed at the next meeting and a diverse number of issues were raised including: better publicity, defining our area, speed limits, lack of policing, litter and the general state of our streets, Leigh St park children's safety, fly tipping and the fact that no investment is being made in Golborne regarding the island on the East Lancashire Road. A further issue was raised regarding the lack of monies coming into our town from WMBC for all the new housing.

The two items decided upon for the next meeting are to be Environmental issues and Highways. A request has been made to WMBC for representatives to be available.

The date of the next meeting to be held in Golborne Library is 28th June at 7.00pm If you’d like to be involved with the community moving forward please email your details to biggcommunity@gmail.com Golborne Comp Leavers of 1978, 40th reunion - The reunion is for people that attended Golborne Comprehensive (Golborne High now) and left in 1978 so it’s 40 years since leaving. The reunion itself is being held at Lowton Social Club on Saturday 14th July at 7:30pm. Tickets are £3.00. There is a Facebook page called ‘Golborne Comp Leavers of 1978, 40th Reunion’ where people can find more information. Officially the first of the three summer months, in June most plants should be growing rapidly, including the tender annuals that have been planted out in flower beds, containers and hanging baskets, now that the last frosts are behind us. Check all containers and baskets daily and water thoroughly if they are showing any sign of dryness. Most of us still use peat-based composts and if you let them dry out they are very, very difficult to get fully wet. Also, with plants growing in containers and baskets: give them a feed of liquid fertilizer every ten days (half strength tomato fertilizer is ideal).

Spring is over and flowers on spring-flowering shrubs will have faded. Those should have been pruned if they needed pruning, for the summer and autumn growth on these produced next spring’s flowers. In contrast, those shrubs that will flower June onwards flower on growth produced this year and are pruned in late winter next year. This included buddleias, that benefit from a hard cut-back in March, and roses that are best pruned in late February-March.

Roses will be flowering. As soon as the flowers fade, cut back to just above a strong bud that will grow to produce the next flowers. You might notice round black spots on the leaves, a fungus called ‘black spot’. It will not kill your roses; it’s just unsightly. Organic gardeners often ignore it; others, who are not, spray with Rose Clear or similar chemical spray.

Fruit trees should be carrying swelling fruit. Should be. In very cold springs, pollinating insects may not have been active enough to carry out pollination so that there is not ‘a set’ and the flowers fall with no fruit. Plums and damsons are particularly prone. But then, in June, fruits trees also have a ‘June drop’ where they shed some of their swelling fruits, leaving those that they can supply adequately with water and nutrients. At the end of June, when the June drop has ended, look at the remaining fruits. Leave them all and you may have lots of tiny apples, pears or plums. Far better: thin out the remaining fruits to one every three or four inches. You will now get the same weight of fruit, but of larger and juicier fruits.

Those of you who grow vegetables, why wait until everything has attained maximum size before taking a harvest? New potatoes are best when eaten small and straight from the ground, so start now and grub up enough for this evening’s supper. You have a row of summer cabbages? Start eating them before they all reach full size and you will enjoy the last before it bursts into flower. Similarly carrots and turnips and beetroot. Even if you don’t have a vegetable plot, you ought to grow lettuces in containers, for the variety of lettuces that you can grow are infinitely superior, especially when picked and immediately eaten, to supermarket ones that have been picked for days. An Old Husband’s Tale: My Boltonian grandfather, Bert Haslam, used to say to me when we were potting up plants, “Tha mun QUALITY LANDSCAPING GARDEN MAINTENANCE LAWN CARE AND JET WASHING always put plenty of broken crocks in the bottom of a plant pot for drainage!” This is NOT SO! It does nothing for drainage. Instead, give the plants a full pot of compost.

Did you know Baby Hedgehogs are called Hoglets?

Lots of hedgehogs will have spent time ‘courting’ and ‘mating’ during the months of March and April which means that after a 35 day gestation period there will be litters of hoglets being born during May and June. If you see a hedgehog in your garden that is visiting regularly then it is more likely to be a female and if she is about to give birth she will put some finishing touches to her nest by carrying leaves and grass to a certain place in the garden – often making repeated visits. In this case her being out in the day has a definite purpose and she should be left alone.

Hoglets are born blind, deaf and naked. Within 2 hours of being born a cushion of fluid that covers their first set of spines is absorbed and the spines appear. They have around 200 white spines that are in straight lines running from head to tail. Their darker second set start to push through 36 hours later. The hoglets’ skin is a grey colour on their backs and pink on their face and tummy. When they are 8 days old they can curl into a ball and at 14 days their eyes open, quickly followed by their ears.

When they are 4 weeks old they start to venture out in the evenings with mum. By this time they are little miniatures of an adult.

If you have a nest in your garden, DO NOT be tempted to peep inside as mum may abandon them or move them to a new site.

Be aware that a female may have chosen your garden in which to make her nest and take extra care when gardening so that you do not disturb her.

Should you accidentally disturb a nest then re-cover it as best you can with the nest materials then move away and watch from a distance, if the mother hog stays in the nest with the babies then they should be ok providing there is no further disturbance, if the mother hog runs away from the nest then watch from a distance to see if she returns, with luck she will return very quickly (she may actually move the hoglets to another nest). If she does not return within one hour then the litter will need to be taken into a rescue centre or vet asap.

In general any small hoglets found in the garden squeaking or just lying about, or attracting flies will need to be rescued. They may have been abandoned or orphaned if the mother has been killed. If you find a single hoglet please look for more as there can be 4-6 in a litter. Bring them indoors, put in a high-sided box and most importantly provide them with a form of warmth by using either a pop bottle or hot water bottle with very warm (not hot) water in it and then wrap the bottle in a towel and place into the box with the hoglets (keep replacing the water so it does not get too cold). Then gently place a towel over the hoglets for them to snuggle into. DO NOT attempt to feed them as they require specialist care.

First Thursday of the month This month (May) we had a talk by Mr Eddie Tarry from Styal prison who gave us a interesting and thought provoking insight into the life and work which is undertaken by the women in Styal and the preparation for their future when they are released. This meeting was the last one to be held in the social centre at Golborne. President Lin Hayes, the committee and WI members would like to thank all at Golborne social centre for their hospitality over the last few years. EXCITING NEWS: Lowton WI are moving back to Lowton. Our meetings as of June will now be held at Lowton Social club 214 Newton Road Lowton. The meetings will continue to be held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.15pm. Deli-licious shake it up by opening evenings Deli-licous has been owned and ran by Susanne Roe with the help of her children for 7 years. They open 7 days a week and every bank Holiday. They decided that they wanted to give the kids somewhere to go of an evening so have now opened a shake bar.

The shake bar opened in March and has so far been a great success. It is open Thursday to Sunday 4pm-9pm. There are some lovely treats on offer for kids (and adults too!)

Local whizz kid footballer has a bright future ahead of him After signing his first contract with the new Premier League champions Manchester City Mason Stephens, from Lowton, was introduced to the first team squad along with other youngsters on the day he joined. His blonde hair, pace and attacking ability have lead to comparisons to the club’s Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne.

The eight-year-old, who goes to Lowton West Primary School, was paraded with the new academy recruits at half-time of Manchester City’s recent home game victory against Swansea City.

Hid dad Simon said: "Mason's mum and I are delighted that he has signed for City. The club are fantastic and that is hard to say as a Manchester United fan. "We only went to their facilities during a summer break as the club had heard whispers about ‘this little blonde kid up front’ and asked us to pop into a session so they could see him. As soon as we attended our first session at the City football academy we knew it was the right place for Mason. City made their intentions clear within a few sessions that they wanted to sign him.

The way that they have nurtured Mason so far has been great and we have seen loads of improvements in his character on and off the pitch while he has been there. They develop people, not just footballers, and take the time to make sure his school work is not affected. Lowton West have also been really accommodating and supportive.

As parents, we could not be prouder of Mason and we are all looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead for him."

Mason’s talents have led to him playing for Manchester United, Everton, Liverpool, Bolton, Wigan, Stoke City and finally Man City in the last three years after he first played for Leigh Genesis. He ended up going to City (even though he is a Massive United fan!)

He has also had success at tournaments in Brussels and Turin and is off to Marseille at the end of the month.

Mason's grandad Graham Burnett added: "I am a massive football fan and am beside myself with pride that Mason has signed for City."

The youngster has also been presented with a first team signed shirt. Good Luck Mason!
