Lowton St Lukes Christmas Lights switch on Thank you to everyone that attended Lowton St Lukes Lights Switch on. We had one of the most successful events ever. We have received so much positive feedback on the event, we are so proud to have been able to help make it happen. Thanks go to our volunteers, helpers and stall holder. A special thanks to Shelley, Gary and all the staff at The Rams Head, Rev Helen Coffey and St Luke's church for organising so many great activities and stalls and for their continued support. Finally my sincere thanks for all the hard work put in by Brian and Mark from Worth Plant Hire and Denise and Gareth Banks without you we couldn't stage this event each year. Of course the lights being switched on by Leigh Leopards, Derek Beaumont, John Asiata & Tom Amone accompanied by the Challenge cup was a hit with everyone. See you all next year! Tracy Leach x

WINTER TIPS FROM COMBI DOCTOR With winter well and truly upon us it’s wise to take a few minutes to avoid potential disaster and disruption by running through the following 10 tips: 1 - Check the location of your main cold water stop tap and ensure that your water can be fully turned off in an emergency. 2 - Find the operating manual for your central heating boiler and familiarise yourself with its operating procedure and what any fault codes it may display are indicating. 3 - Check the pressure in your central heating system (if a pressurised system) and ensure you are familiar with the process of increasing the pressure if necessary (ideally to be between 1 and 1.5 Bar). 4 - Check that with the heating on all your radiators heat up evenly. If cold at the top they may need venting (the system pressure then needing to be topped up as detailed above) or if hot at the top only, you may be suffering from circulation issues which may need further attention. 5 - Identify and locate the condensate discharge pipe from your boiler and be aware that if it freezes your boiler will stop working. If safe to do so insulate it if possible or be prepared to defrost it (using a kettle of hot water) if necessary. 6 - Check that the water supply to your outside taps, or any other external plumbing installations have been isolated from within the property and any residual water drained from them. 7 - Ensure all pipe-work in cold areas, such as roof spaces, out-buildings and such like are fully insulated. 8 - Check that no overflow pipes are running/dripping (with the exception of the condensate discharge pipe from your boiler) as if these freeze water could back up and overflow within your property. 9 - If you have an older gas appliance with a pilot light, be aware how to re light it if it blows out but don’t forget that such an appliance will be much more expensive to run than it’s modern equivalent. 10 - Finally, if you’re lucky enough to jet off somewhere much warmer for more that a few days, don’t forget that your insurance company may stipulate that your water should be turned off and water tanks, cisterns and such like be drained down and/or heating left on. If this is not done and a burst occurs then they may decline any subsequent claim, so read their small print and be sure you remain covered. We are able to provide heating controls which can be operated from wherever you are - please contact us for further information. If you need any assistance with any of the above aspects, or are unlucky enough to suffer any plumbing or central heating issues let us know as we will be pleased to assist where possible.

CYCLE PROJECT SUCCESS The Big Bike Amnesty run by The Wigan Cycle Project took place last month to collect as many bikes as possible ready for Christmas. The idea was to help those struggling financially by providing bikes that others didn’t use anymore. The project was put forward to several schools in the area and it wasn’t long before we had some of our local primary schools on board. RL Hughes in Ashton, Appley Bridge All Saints and Gilded Hollins nr Lowton all took part, and what a fantastic job the staff and children did. Over 50 bikes were donated to The Wigan Cycle Project, all of which will be serviced by the volunteers at the project before being passed on to the local community. The Wigan Cycle Project is based in Hindley and is open to everyone. Unfortunately last season the team was folding, so Sean Taylor & Jen Roberts took over the team, to keep the lads off the streets with a good hobby, they are a brilliant set of lads, hard working and thriving within the sport. LOWTON WI What a night our last meeting of 2023 was at Lowton WI our ladies enjoyed their Christmas party, after enjoying a delicious hot pot supper, the party games began, everyone had a fabulous time. I can vouch for that, as the committee received many thank you messages from our ladies which made the effort worth while. As well as enjoying the evening our ladies thought about the Wigan and Leigh Women's refuge and Wigan and Leigh young carers, by bringing in gifts for the two charities which has been supported by our WI throughout the year. We now look forward to a busy 2024 by planning our speakers and trips out as well as our craft group and nibble and natter group which helps to raise funds for the North West Air ambulance. The first meeting in 2024 will be on Thursday 1st.February. If there are any ladies out there who are looking for a new interest in the forthcoming New Year why not try Lowton WI, we meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in Lowton Social Club on Newton Road.
