GEMSTONE CHEER ARE RECRUITING...

I am Lydia Gough a 21 year old girl who has always lived in Leigh. From a young age I took part in pom dance cheerleading traveling all the way to Manchester each week to train as there were no clubs in the area. I competed at multiple UK competitions including representing UK at the Europeans. When I was 18 years old I completed all my coaching qualifications and set up a local cheerleading club in Leigh called Gemstone in the hope of giving children the same amazing experiences I did. In the last 3 years Gemstone has grown to the point of being able to now have its own dance studio in Leigh Spinners Mill and is made up of 6 teams ranging from ages 4 - 25 + years old. Each age group attends competitions all over the UK. In 2019 alone Gemstone has brought back to their Leigh based dance studio 9 x 1st place, 9 x 2nd place and 5 x 3rd place trophies! Recently our dance teams attended ICC Championships in Blackpool this was one of the hardest competition any of our dance teams have attended. They were up against large categories and dance clubs that have been going for many years, but each dancer from Gemstone gave it everything and our Junior pom dance team, Gemstone Diamonds won a bid (invite) to Battle of the Champions. This is a one of a kind bid event/invitation only competition where the best of the best compete against each other to find out who is the true champion of the UK. Winning this bid in only 3 years of dancing when every dancer started as complete beginner's is an amazing achievement. Unfortunately one of our dancers is unable to attend the date of the big event so we are currently trying to recruit an additional dancer to start training now for the event in June. Gemstone Diamonds is made up of 10 extremely talents Leigh and Lowton based girls all aged between 12-16 years old. Each dancer joined Gemstone with zero experience in pom dance and some with zero experience in cheerleading at all. The majority of the dancers have been with the club since we started and as a coach I couldn’t be anymore proud of them. They sacrifice a lot to come to the studio every week training and a lot of weekends away at competitions, there are not many teenagers that would do that nowadays. We are always welcoming new dancers of all ages and I love watching Gemstone grow each week however our junior team (12-16 years old) is the hardest age group to attract and out of all the teams always has the lowest membership. If you would like more information about joining us please get in touch. 07802417516. gemstonecheerleading@gmail.com or www.gemstonecheerleading.co.uk

MONTHLY FOCUS

MEET THE FACE BEHIND THE BUSINESS John is the owner of Jcal Gold Recycling This year is his tenth year at the CPS Centre in Culcheth (above Sainsburys)

My business came about when my wife asked me to sort out what I had been collecting for years. I was at a crossroads in my career at that time and decided to start buying and selling a whole range of things. The opportunity to open a shop in Culcheth arose and I have been here for over 10 years. I enjoy not knowing what is going to turn up for sale and I also like the different customers that shop with me. Everyone has a story to tell much like a lot of the items I sell. I am regularly told that the shop is like an Aladdin’s Cave. It feels great watching a customer leave satisfied with their ‘treasure’ I buy all sorts of items and have regulars who collect. Every day is different and that alone makes what I do great. If you have something that you think someone else might like or some scrap gold or are looking for gifts pop in and see us. You never know what you might find!

The group of volunteers in the Golborne Carnival group has begun work on the return of Golborne Carnival on Sunday 7th June thanks to Wigan Council offering their full support. The event is sponsored by The Bloomin' Nursery and Golborne and Lowton West Voice. We have had the following information from Mark: “The Parade will leave St Thomas's school at 11am heading down High Street, onto bridge Street, turning right onto Legh Street then left on Mitchell Street finishing at Legh Street Park. The groups we have so far are... Stados Stars Drama Group, Rainbows scouts / Guides, Golborne Brass band, Golborne ex miners, Golborne in bloom, at least 7 Morris dancer troups & St Thomas's Gala (May Queen) At Legh Street Park we are having a stage where we will have a few shows on. We already have: The crowning of the May queen, a choir with over 60 members, Arron Bennett (a young talented singer who sang at Wigan got talent and at Golborne Christmas Lights switch on) & Rob Hughes with a rock band (tbc) Legh Street Park will be the Morris dancer competition which alone brings over 600 spectators from around the North West. We are in touch with Silcocks funfair who have confirmed they will hold some of their attractions on Legh Street Park for the day. The funfair will be open from 127pm. We are also opening stalls, a burger van and an ice cream van. All this is so far! Our plan is for the carnival to take place on Sunday 7th June. Wigan Council have offered their full support as the application is currently being assessed by the councils land management team. In the meantime, Jeremy from the council has offered a lot of support and is helping to plan so that the parade runs safely as, in past carnivals, some anti social behaviour affected the events future. We hope everyone will support its return and help prevent this. We are in touch with the local police and are even looking at the possibility of mobile CCTV. It should be a fantastic day for everyone. If any groups would like to take part or anyone who would like to volunteer for this event please contact Mark Collier at The Bloomin' Nursery.. www.thebloominnursery.co.uk

On Sunday February 2nd, Fusion Leigh CrossFit, its members, family and friends will be rowing/skiing half a million meters in aid of motor neurone disease. Recently one of our longest standing members Louise received the horrible news that her husband had been diagnosed with the disorder. Motor neurone disease (MND) is a fatal rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, attacking the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work. It kills a third of people within a year and more than half within two years of diagnosis. It’s a devastating disease that affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time and kills six people every day. There is no cure. As many are aware also the sad news of Rugby player Rob Burrows has been diagnosed so the more money we can raise for this charity will be amazing help for everyone. Our aim is to raise as much money as possible for MNDA which will go towards helping those suffering with and caring for people with the disorder. Everyone is welcome, our doors are open from 9am till 6pm so feel free to pop in and contribute what ever you like to the cause. Whether that be a donation of money or a donation of meters. We also have a just giving page... www.justgiving.com/fundraising/halfmillionrow
