Welcome to the December issue of Local Living Well I can’t quite believe we are here again. The last issue of the year.

After 2020 being such a challenging year I just wanted to take the time to say a few words. What has struck me more than anything else has been the overwhelming support that has been given within our lovely community. From supporting our amazing businesses, care packages being collected and distributed to families, refuges and food banks to a general sense of care for peoples well being.

I for one hope that we can continue to pull together and, in the words of Henry Ford, “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success”.

The lights in Lowton, Golborne and Lane Head are all getting ready to be switched on as I type so we will have some lovely Christmas cheer.

Christmas Shoe Box appeal Rotary Newton-le-Willows successfully launched its Christmas Shoe Box appeal, asking people to create gifts to send to disadvantaged children, families, and older people in other countries.

Rotarian Alan Pomfret, pictured with some of the filled boxes, said, 'Rotary started the Shoe Box scheme in 1994, and we're proud to be part of the team sending over 50,000 boxes every year to people in Eastern Europe. The boxes are filled with household basics for families including soaps and shampoo, and gifts, clothing, and accessories for children and teenagers. We know from our Rotarian friends in the clubs, distributing them that everyone's delighted to receive them.'

The Club's boxes will be collected and distributed in time for Christmas in countries including Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine.

The local ladies are sticking to the Covid 19 regulations like glue and have this reassurance.

We take the safety of our members seriously and have a full risk assessment per venue.

All necessary hygiene and safety measures are in place and we each have a booking system to ensure numbers are limited and we can support track and trace effectively should we need to.

We all stick to the 1m + rule and wear masks to protect each other. Hand sanitisers are in place too.' Booking a place is essential and any new or returning members are encouraged to contact one of us for full details. We can't wait to see you all.

Donna scoops prestigious award shortlist for the Great British Care Awards 2020 Once again, Bridgewater Day Care Centre in Golborne are delighted to be receiving recognition from The Great British North West Care Awards 2020. This year, they are extremely proud that one of their Support Workers, Donna Edwards will be a finalist for the Dignity in Care Award. Last year, Gill Sinar at the Day Care Centre won the same award!

Donna lives locally in Golborne, Wigan and has worked at Bridgewater Day Care since the beginning of July 2017. Donna values dignity in the person-centred care she provides to her clients and on receiving news of her nomination told us: “Being nominated for the Dignity in Care Award means the world to me, just for doing something that I love. I have the best Manager and a great team alongside me, and I am proud to be recognised for what I love doing. I started at Bridgewater in 2017, having never worked in care but it turned out to be my dream job and I have never looked back. Taking care of and making sure our “family” at work is my main priority, to see them smile, happy and safe throughout the day is worth everything to me. Coming to work is like coming home, making a difference to our clients’ day has got to be the best feeling that I’ve had in my job.”

Donna’s Manager, Lisa Lehan told us how incredibly proud she was of Donna when she heard the news that she would be a Finalist for such a prestigious care award and added that: “The Bridgewater Day Care team all work so incredibly hard and show outstanding passion and commitment to making a difference and going above and beyond in their care for our clients at the Day Care Centre. None of my team have any expectation of accolade, but I know that it means a lot to them when their hard work is recognised.”

Gill Sinar, who won the North West Dignity in Care Award last year has been put through to the finals of the National Great British Care Awards 2019 and they are due to take place virtually on Friday 30 th October.

SANTA IS STILL COMING TO LOWTON & LEIGH! We hope that Covid will not stop Santa from touring the streets on the Rotary Sleigh at Christmas BUT he will not be allowed to stop to meet anyone close up.

We are determined to bring joy to children at Christmas, so Santa’s Sleigh will drive around similar routes as last year, at a slow speed.

PLEASE do not gather in groups, keep a safe distance and do not approach the Sleigh.

Details of the streets we aim to visit are given below. Unfortunately, we will not be able to make our door-to-door collections, or attend Supermarkets, which is disastrous for all the local good causes that rely on our donations.
