Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year from Local Living
Welcome to the December Issue of Local Living As I write this the glorious Winter sun is streaming through the window. I really do love this time of year! As you can see my Editor’s letter will have to be rather short and sweet this month. The December issue is packed with a selection of amazing local businesses, What’s on in and around and there are some lovely stories on our Community News section on page 13. The January issue is nearly full already so please do get in touch if you are interested in popping something in there. All that’s left is for me to wish you a Happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. See you on the other side!
Community defibrillator installed at Moss Industrial Estate Two local businesses have teamed up to provide thousands of workers and members of the local community with a lifesaving defibrillator. Moss Industrial Estate, on St. Helen’s Road in Lowton, and Jacobi Carbons, one of its tenants, have funded the defibrillator to ensure that staff based at the industrial estate, plus contractors and members of the public, have access to it in an emergency. The defibrillator, which is located in Croft Court on Moss Industrial Estate, has been registered with the emergency services and is now fully operational. In the event of a cardiac arrest on site, a quick call to 999 will generate a unique access code. The defibrillator itself will guide the user through its operation or, alternatively, the emergency services operator will talk them through it. Mark Downs, global laboratory manager at Jacobi Carbons, who led the project, said: “We have had employees with heart conditions and there have been a couple of instances when we have had to call an ambulance on site so this is a really important piece of kit. Whilst we hope we will never have to use it, it’s wonderful to think we have it there just in case and that it could help to save someone’s life.” Sebastian Moss, managing director at George Moss & Sons, said: “There are over 100 businesses based at the industrial estate and thousands of people work here and visit the site every single day so we felt it was really important that we can provide a defibrillator that is fully accessible to everyone 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “It’ll even be accessible day and night to people living in the local community so we want to make sure that our neighbours in Lowton and Leigh are aware it is here, ready for use whenever it is needed.”

December can be a quiet month in the garden, but there are more things to take care of than you might think. With limited daylight hours as we approach the shortest day of the year, this month’s crisp wintery weather can be strikingly beautiful and bitterly cold in equal measure. • Winter-prune wisteria, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. • Prune climbing roses now, removing diseased or damaged growth and tying in any new shoots to their support. • Prune older flowered side shoots back by two thirds of their length. • Prune Japanese Maples (Acers) and vines if needed, as they will bleed sap if is done any later. Leave the faded flower heads on your hydrangeas until spring, as they provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stems. If any of your rose bushes suffered from blackspot or rust this summer, gather up and remove any fallen leaves to reduce the chance of infection next year. Lift and store dahlia tubers once their leaves are blackened by frost. Move containers of shrubs or bedding planters to a sheltered spots; clustering them together them together helps protect the root systems from suffering frost damage Check climbers are securely attached to their supports with ties. Harvest holly with berries for making Christmas garlands and wreaths. Stand them in a bucket of water until you're ready to use them. Take root cuttings of oriental poppies and grow them on in cold frames. Take hardwood cuttings from suitable trees and shrubs. Spread fresh gravel or grit around alpine plants. Looking after your lawn: Avoid walking on it when it’s blanketed by heavy frost or snow, as this damages the grass. If it's a mild winter continue to cut the lawn if it's growing but raise the height of the mower blades. Spike lawns with a garden fork to improve drainage and aeration. Keep clearing leaves off the lawn to let the light in and prevent dead patches appearing. Send your lawnmower and shears to be serviced and sharpened while they’re less in demand. In the flower garden Dig over empty borders and prepare your soil for next year’s planting. Group potted plants together in a sheltered spot in the garden to protect them from the harshest winter weather. Get pruning - wisteria, fruit trees, rose and Japanese maples are just some of the plants that benefit from a winter prune. Look after the birds - clean feeders, stock up on fat balls and make sure they have access to fresh water.

Sue ended her session by quoting the Pam Ayres poem called ...They should have asked my husband, and closed the evening with a song. Lowton WI have again been making and selling poppies, proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion, we are also part of the community who will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph at St Mary’s church on remembrance Sunday. Asda Foundation spreads magic this Christmas with double delight for Green Token Charities. Local charities set to benefit from £1 million investment. Three organisations in Golborne to receive funding boost as Asda Foundation celebrates 30th Birthday. Asda’s Green Token scheme to reward winning group with £1000 this Christmas. Three local community groups are celebrating after being surprised from Asda with an ‘extra special’ donation this Christmas, as part of the latest round of Asda Foundation Green Token Giving. This Christmas, in celebration of the Asda Foundation 30th Birthday, the three charities in the local area will see their donation doubled as part of the supermarket’s campaign to ‘make Christmas extra special’. The charity receiving the most green tokens will receive £1000 instead of £500, with the other two runners up receiving £500 each instead of £200. Over 1500 local charities and causes across the country will benefit from the boost in funding this Christmas, thanks to a £1 million investment by the Asda Foundation across its Green Tokens and local impact grants as they aim to spread some magic across the festive season. St Thomas's Primary School PTFA (Ashton In Makerfield), Forget Me Not Cafe (Golborne) & Brecon Close Foyer (Platt Bridge) have all been shortlisted for the Green Token Scheme, which allows customers at Asda Golborne to pick charities or community groups close to their own hearts to gain vital funding boosts by placing a green token in the relevant box on the stores community board. To help gain support for their cause each shortlisted charity was surprised with a magical green jar, which features in the retailers’ Christmas advert and encouraged to share their news in their local area and encourage customers to vote. This was along with a note advising them that they are now in the running to receive double the amount they originally anticipated. St Thomas's Primary School PTFA want to enhance the learning experience of the children so would like our help to buy the necessary equipment. Forget Me Not Cafe (Golborne St Thomas's) hold monthly meetings to help people in the community with dementia & their carers so would like to provide a better experience. Brecon Close Foyer (Platt Bridge) are supported housing for young people estranged from their families they want to provide some necessities for their young people. Asda Golborne Community Champion, Cheryl Gillon said: “We’re really excited to be spreading the magic this Christmas by supporting three local charity groups with double the donation they were expecting as part of our Green Token Giving Scheme. We couldn’t be happier that this Christmas the Asda Foundation are doubling their investment meaning we will be donating £2,000 across all three shortlisted groups with the winner set to receive £1,000 – don’t forget to come into store and vote.”
