Welcome to the December Issue of Local Living Well here we are already! The December issue is packed with some fabulous local businesses. So much so that this will be the least I have ever said! Why not save a few pennies this December with our voucher and offers on page 9. On the community news page on page 12 you can find out where Santa is going to be on his rotary sleigh. There is also a list of emergency numbers together for you to keep handy. So, behalf of Local Living, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you next year!

The Devils Junior In-line Hockey Club are seeking new recruits to join their squads at a variety of age groups For those that don’t know much about the sport, it’s very close to Ice Hockey but played on in-line roller skates rather than ice skates and the junior category is open to kids up to the age of 16. It’s widely known that children of our generation spend far too much time gazing at televisions and playing computer games and we all should be encouraging them to be more active. In-line Hockey is the perfect antidote. The sport benefits a child in a myriad of ways, including physically, emotionally and mentally. As a parent of a young In-line Hockey player, I can say with my hand on my heart that this sport has had an incredibly positive impact on my child’s health, social and academic skills. Hockey is one of the best cardiovascular games you can play. Alternating between skating and rest (what is known as interval training in the fitness world) improves the efficiency of the cardiovascular system, allowing it to bring oxygen to the muscles more quickly. It also helps to prevent injuries that often come with other sports that engage in repetitive movements. Playing hockey burns a ton of calories and regular training is a great way to improve their physical fitness and wellbeing. Hockey is a fast sport. Plays develop in seconds, and momentum can shift in the blink of an eye. A child who can learn how to operate in that sort of environment will improve his or her ability to make quick decisions and think on his or feet. Concentration is also improved; being able to concentrate while playing will make it easier to concentrate while learning. The Devils train at the Northwest Roller Sports Rink (Bolton Road, Atherton, M46 9JG). Training times are detailed below. Skates, pads, sticks, helmets and gloves are all available to loan during the classes, but the kids will need to be able to roller skate before they join the Hockey training classes. The standard of skating doesn’t need to be high, as further training in this area will be delivered as part of the Hockey training, but ideally they do need to be able to demonstrate the basics.
4
Once the kids have mastered the basics through the “Introduction to In-line Hockey” class. They will then be invited to attend the advanced classes which are held on Monday evening. Skating lessons: Tuesday 5.30 – 6.30 Tuesday 6.30 – 7.30 All ages welcome (£4.50 each) Hockey training Introduction to Inline Roller Hockey – Saturday 9.30 - 11.30 (£5 per hour) Hockey advanced (under u8’s & u10s) – Monday evening 6.00 – 7.15 (£6) Hockey advanced (under u12’s & u14s) – Monday evening 7.15 – 8.30 (£6) For more information, please visit our Facebook page #jnrdevils or find us on Instagram @devils_inline_hockey_club or pop along to any of the training sessions and have a chat with one of the coaches or team managers.

Bill Sowerbutts was one of the great characters of 20th century gardening who was based in Ashton-under-Lyne. His father died when he was sixteen and he took over the family market gardening business. His favourite flower, he once said, was the cauliflower, because, ‘I made so much money from growing ‘em in’t war!’ Famed for appearing for many years in BBC Radio’s Gardeners’ Question Time, Bill used to say, ‘House plants thrive from a modicum of neglect!’ And he was right, especially in the colder months of the year. You have the central heating on? Most house plants hate central heating, so keep them in the cooler, frost-free room with plenty of light. I use the conservatory, which we don’t use much in winter because of the cost of heating it. Indoor hyacinths: bring them into the warm rooms or porch just as the flowers are colouring up. Christmas cacti the same. Those that flower indoors over the Christmas-New Year period: keep them watered, but don’t give them too much. While we are on the subject of watering indoor pot plants, DON’T put crocks at the bottom of the pot or bowl, because that DOESN’T improve drainage. This was confirmed by an RHS study, summarized in the recent edition of The Garden magazine. Instead, fill the pot with compost. When it comes to house plants you are overwintering that will begin to grow and then flower in spring. Like geraniums and fuchsias – keep them on the dry side. Dec, Jan and Feb are the best months for planting deciduous trees and shrubs that are dormant in winter: fruit bushes, blackcurrants and gooseberries, apples and pears, roses, hydrangeas and lilacs. The fruit varieties and roses are often sold ‘bare-rooted’, and are usually cheaper to buy (Google R.V.Rogers of Pickering. They have a tremendous fruit range, including old Lancashire varieties). Buy a carton of mycorrhizal granules (Root Grow). Soak the roots in a bucket of water as soon as they arrive, prepare a planting hole that is deeper and wider than the roots.
Fork into the bottom of the hole plenty of garden compost or well rotted manure. Before planting, dust the bare roots with the mycorrhizal Root Grow. If your shrub or tree is pot grown, before planting and after removing the pot, tweeze out some of the roots and dust the outside of the compost and roots with Root Grow. Now plant, with bare root ones, spreading the roots out widely. With roses, currants and hydrangeas, plant an inch or two deeper than they were planted in the nursery. With trees, plant at the same level. Water well and scatter some fertilizer (bone meal or blood, fish and bone are fine) around the plant. Water well. Mycorrhiza are fungi that grow into the outer root cells and they take up mineral nutrients from the soil and pass it into the new plant’s root tissues so that, by using Root Grow, you enhance the root growth and then the new stem growth. The fungus/root relationship is a form of ‘symbiosis’, where both plant and fungus benefit: the plant gets lots of nutrients from the fungus and the plant passes on to the fungus sugars it has made in its leaves in photosynthesis. Whatever trees or shrubs you plant this winter, keep them well watered through their first full season: half a gallon every fortnight is not too much. And may I wish you all a very Happy Christmas, and a great New Year. Malcolm Greenhalgh (Newton-le-Willows Gardeners’ Association) Note: NlWGA Sales and Advice Hut on Rob Lane re-opens at 10.30am Saturday January 5th MLS GARDENING SERVICES WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL OF THEIR CUSTOMERS PAST AND PRESENT A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
