It probably goes without saying that August can be a hot, dry month, so that watering may be crucial. Hanging baskets and containers will need watering every day, sometimes twice a day. This is especially important if you have used peat-based composts, for if you let these composts dry out they are exceedingly difficult to wet thoroughly. Newly planted shrubs and trees will need watering, even if we have rain, at least once per week, as will newly sown seeds, seedlings and transplanted seedlings on the vegetable plot. And if you feel that some other plants are in need of water (e.g. annuals in borders, older vegetable plants), it is better to give them a great soaking once every week than a little daily. Also, don’t forget that some plants benefit from liquid feeds: plants growing in containers and some vegetables such as cauliflowers and celeriac. Give the latter a high nitrogen feed every week and flowering plants a weak (half strength) watering with tomato fertiliser. One year’s weeds = seven years of weeding, is an old saying. But it is true that if you let lots of weeds flower and set seed, you will have much more weeding to do in the future. In dry weather, use the hoe and let the weeds die and dry. In wet weather, remove the weeds, for they will often re-root if root and stem are not separated, and they may regrow if the base of the stem is left attached to the roots. I first enjoyed eating globe artichokes on a visit to France, where these unusual flower-cum-vegetables are highly rated and seen on nearly every market vegetable stall in late spring and summer. Here we very rarely see them, whether in supermarkets or real markets. They do take some getting used to, for eating one takes a bit of practice. The flower head is cut with an inch of stem before the pointed ‘petals’ (really bracts) have fully opened and boiled whole for about half an hour. You then put lots of melted butter and seasoning with the artichoke head in a bowl and pull off the bracts one by one, nibbling off the morsel of soft lusciousness from their bases, the inner bracts having most of the softness.

When you have nibbled at all the bracts you have the flower base and stalk with, inside the base, a circular mass of the developing stamens. These you carefully remove with a sharp teaspoon and discard, leaving the flower base and stalk. These you now devour with the last of the butter and seasoning. Lovely! The pile of nibbled bracts goes to the compost bin. Globe artichokes are dead easy to grow, and they are such strikingly statuesque plants that they will look well in any garden border. Buy some young plants from a garden centre or by mail order (I grow six for the two of us). Dig plenty of humus into the ground and plant the infant artichokes three feet apart. Keep well watered, and mulch the soil around the plants. They will give you three or four years of big artichokes before they need replacing. You can then take cuttings called ‘slips’ from them to replace the old weary plants. Finally: think....what bulbs do I want for Christmas and the New Year? For the bulbs will be on sale by the month’s end.

Hello. I’m Marge. I’ve recruited 40 people to walk, jog and run the Great North Run with me in 2019. The aim is to raise £40,000 as a team for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Why forty by forty? My step-dad has mixed dementia (Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer’s). Since he was diagnosed, I’ve watched how this horrendous disease can strip away everything that makes ‘you’, you. I’ve seen the impact that it can have on surrounding friends and family. And I think more needs to be done to work out how to stop it. Oh, and I’m 40 years old in 2019. So I figured recruiting 40 people and raising £40k sounded like a fine plan. You can read all about it and how to support or help Marge at www.fortybyforty2019.com/ about-the-challenge/
