Welcome to the April Issue of Local Living So finally we have officially ‘sprung forward’. The April magazine really is a bumper issue of articles, what’s on and, as always, lovely local businesses and service. If you pop over to p13 you might be able to spot someone you know that has taken part in World Book Day. I love seeing all your pictures and all your news is gratefully received. I was told last week that some of our local events that have been in our what’s on guide are now very well attends. Fantastic news! Keep it coming! You will find lots of suggestions for Easter on p8. Hope grows strong in Golborne After being brutally attacked by a stranger and suffering life changing injuries Mark Collier,29 from Golborne, is in the process of setting up a community project called ‘The Bloomin’ Nursery’.

This is an idea he has developed while recovering from a bleed on the brain. Mark, a former landscape gardener, was out with friends in Ashton when he was knocked unconscious in an unprovoked attack.

Mark, who is expecting his first child with fiancée Hayley Melling, has spent a number of months trying to rebuild his life following the attack. The attack left him hospitalised with serious head injuries.

Following this he was unable to drive due to constant dizziness and eventually had to give up his landscape gardening business leaving him struggling financially and emotionally.

During his road to recovery Mark began planting thousands of seedlings in his greenhouse given to him as a gift. “It’s kept me active and mentally challenged. I’m not very good at just sitting and doing nothing. It was my mum’s idea. I was a gardener anyway and she has always said that when she retires she would love a nursery. I think it’s a good way to combat mental health problems. There’s allsorts of medication for depression but, doing this, I didn't need that anymore.”

Mark has taken his initial nursery idea and turned it into a project for the community. He has received support from may sources including Wigan Council, Wigan Borough in Bloom and Golborne in Bloom to name a few.

Mark’s plans to open a ‘spud hut’ look fantastic. This would see customers sampling jacket potatoes grown by his own hand.

This is an idea that would hopefully be started in Golborne but we could see them popping up all over the country all being well. In Mark’s words “It will start in Golborne but I’m hoping to get as many as possible. I want to reach as many communities as I can”.

“I am in talks with local schools. The children would be coming down and growing their own plants. I think it would be great to help others. I am really pleased that I have been accepted as a mentor for young people. I feel something like this project will help them to focus on something worthwhile”.

Mark is currently discussing potential sites with the council but at the moment you can show your support by visiting him at his monthly market stall. This is situated on Kane Square 10-4pm every Saturday. Join The Bloomin’ Nursery at 10am on Easter Sunday for the ‘Golborne big Easter Egg hunt’. The Easter Bunny will be hiding some chocolate eggs on Peter Kane square.

LOVE LEAH

Annual bike ride May 12th is the date for the annual Love Leah bike ride. If you can ride a bike we would love you to join us. Our daughter Leah was involved in a motorbike accident in 2012 . Leah received treatment for her injuries at Salford Royal she never regained consciousness. Leah died a week after the accident she was an organ donor saving 3 lives in her passing. Had she survived she would have needed extensive treatment at the Walton Neuro Centre. The Love Leah charity raises money for the relative accommodation at Walton . The Leah Davies suite enables relatives to stay near loved ones while they receive treatment. To date £65,000 has been raised in Leah’s name. The annual bike ride is from Salford Royal to Walton 28 miles . Its for all abilities and goes at a slow pace with stops . We go as fast as our slowest rider. Its about doing something to remember Leah and any donations or sponsors are welcome. We hope you can join us it will be a great day ...and we get cake at the end !! Small businesses are an integral part of any local community and those that give back to their community are considered as local heroes to many.

One Warrington family who is very grateful to local company Bumblebee Plumbing and Heating Ltd are the Olliers from Culcheth. Their old boiler had been malfunctioning for two years, during which time three separate heating and plumbing companies had failed to find the fault and mend it, leaving them with intermittent heating and hot water.

John was diagnosed with Leukaemia in November 2018 and has undergone extensive chemotherapy in Whiston Hospital during the past four months. “It was during this time,’ says Anne, his wife, “that our boiler got worse, switching itself off several times a day. This wasn’t good for John when he was at home between treatments, as he feels the cold and the house needs to be kept warm.”

Ross Coen, from local Warrington Company Bumblebee Plumbing and Heating Ltd heard about John and Anne’s plight, and offered to help. Thanks to the generosity of Ross and his colleagues at Intergas Boilers, the family have now had a new boiler installed for free, and now have a warm home with a continuous supply of hot water again. The boiler was installed in one day thanks to Steve, the fitter, who displayed great knowledge, efficiency and professionalism. The hot water supply is now constant, and an up to date thermostat means that the Olliers can easily control the heat in every room.

Jamie Penny from Intergas Boilers took the trouble to visit while the boiler was being fitted. “We at Intergas want to support local installers who are well involved in supporting their local community,” he commented to Anne. “I hope the boiler delivers you plenty of warmth and hot water and is a small burden off your mind. I wish you and John all the best in the near future.”

Anne and John are thrilled with their new boiler. “This has taken away some of the stress and worry from our situation and has already made such a difference to us,” says John. “It will be more efficient than our old one, not only have we saved money on the installation but it will save us money on our gas bills, and will reduce the impact of global warming – a win-win situation!”

John now has to have more serious treatment in the form of a bone marrow transplant, which, in the words of his doctor, is ‘big treatment’ and will take up to two years for him to fully recover.

Without a bone marrow transplant the disease will prove fatal for John. He’s on the bone marrow recipient register, but it may take time to find a good match for him. Time he doesn’t have.

In the meantime, there is a drug that may help, but this isn’t available on the NHS as John has rare form of leukaemia. One dose, lasting two months, costs around £11,000, and he may need several doses. It’s been shown that it could help to put him in a better position before his treatment, as it will curb the development of more mutating cells which could give him more time for a suitable donor to be found. This drug has also been shown to improve prognosis for recovery after treatment.

April is when the garden really begins to flourish, with the days lengthening and the days and nights getting warmer (remember February...very warm days, but very cold nights?). And it’s not only our garden trees, shrubs, flowers and veg that get growing. So do the weeds. I get asked especially about two weeds, the Japanese knotweed and the mare’s tail (or horsetail).

Japanese knotweed is a foreign and invasive species and the law says that it may not be transported anywhere and should be rigidly controlled, for it can easily damage property and can spread rapidly. In contrast, mare’s tail is a native species and does not cause serious damage (on our Lowton estate it grows through tarmac pavements). The problem with both is that their underground stems go very deep and it is not easy to wipe a colony out with a single spray of Roundup.

It is especially tricky with mare’s tail, for its shoots are covered with a fine impervious layer so that herbicides run off.

There is a herbicide – Kurtail – that kills these, but it is expensive, not recommended for amateurs, and is going, I believe, to be banned. You could do what many gardeners do: put washing up liquid in with your Roundup spray, and this washes away the mare’s tail protective layer.

However, the real answer to all weeds is to get them out as much as you can and prevent those like knotweed and mare’s tail building up their underground stores by cutting out any green shoots as soon as they appear, and preventing annual weeds like bittercress from producing seeds. So keep beds weeded as much as you can by using a hoe, and if you have a mare’s tail or knotweed problem, examine daily and cut away any shoots as they appear. A hard and long task, but it works. And whatever you do, don’t put knotweed in a compost bin: burn it.

April may be the middle month of spring, but early morning frosts are quite common. Such frosts will kill half-hardy annual bedding and hanging basket plants, such as begonias, petunias and geraniums so wait until the middle of May to put those out. Similarly, those who enjoy growing vegetables look forward to those first early potatoes and the tomatoes that we grow ourselves as distinct from the Spanish red ball bearings we suffer in winter.

Plant new potatoes at the beginning of April (main crop at the end of the month), but if a frost is forecast after the first shoots appear cover them with sheets of newspaper or

fleece, weighted down to stop them from blowing away. And you are fine to put toms in the greenhouse by the end of April provided you have a heater ‘just in case’.

A tip: the best F1 tomato plants are expensive. If you need more than one, buy just one or two and, when the first side shoots grow (we usually cut them off and bin them), take them and pot them as cuttings.

F1s for free! And when your tomatoes are producing well in summer, let another side shoot grow and when it is 6” long pot that up.

It will give you tomatoes in autumn when your old plants have gone.

The spring bulb season is coming to an end, the flowers gone but the leaves still nice and green. If they are in pots, give them a half strength feed of a high potash fertiliser such as rose fertiliser. When the leaves eventually dry up, plant them in the garden. Give those in the garden a little feed and you will get better flowers next year.

Cheeky Monkey’s Playgroup are raising money for charity The ladies that voluntarily run Cheeky Monkeys Playgroup every Monday and Thursday at Golborne Sports & Social Club are taking on two challenges in the next few months. On the 26th May Elaine is doing a sky dive in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society. On the 13th July Denise, along with friends, will be joining in The Mighty Hike in the Lake district in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Both charities are close to their hearts. Lowton WI meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in Lowton Social Club on Newton Road. The next meeting will be on the 4th April. Our March meeting was a piece of culinary delight for all cheese lovers and a insight into how cheese is produced. Our members were able to sample various flavours of cheese during the demonstration, many went home with cheese that they had purchased.

St Thomas’ CE J & I School have been very busy!

Congratulations to St Thomas’ year 6 children who have won the Inter-School Highland Games trophy for the second year on a row.

There is a lot of competition within the interschools teams so we are really impressed with their skill and determination in winning again.

A huge well done.

The community have pulled together to help the school PTA win the first prize of £500.00 in the Asda Green Token Scheme. This is the second year running where the PTA have managed to clock up enough tokens to win the £500.00 and this money goes towards those little extras that the school budget would not be able to support. The children, staff and governors are incredibly grateful to St Thomas’ PTA, and all members of the community who supported us in this campaign. Cheryl from Asda Golborne came to school on the 16thMarch to present the big cheque.

St Thomas’ took part in Red Nose Day this year and raised money for Comic Relief by wearing a red nose and bringing in a £1.00 donation. We were particularly impressed with the creativity of those children who chose to paint their red nose on in a bid to help save the oceans from plastic waste. St Thomas’ is a Silver Flag ecoschool and we are now working towards our Green Flag. The planet is very important to us and our next project is to build a greenhouse from recycled plastic bottles.

Low Bank Ground Residential Pupils from Years 5 and 6 took part in a 5 day residential at Low Bank Ground Outdoor Education Centre.

During the visit the children participated in a wide variety of activities including; canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, rock scrambling, selfled walks and a range of team building tasks.

Another focus during the residential was bush craft which involved the children constructing shelters and cooking on an open fire.

As we are a registered provider for the John Muir Award the children were able to achieve their Discovery Award.

It was a very rewarding residential experience for all the pupils, one of the many we do at St Thomas’.

The Praise Service is very much

family orientated and less formal than a normal church service.

YOUR CHILDREN – Welcome people at the door, give out the service sheets, Help with the offertory collection, Get involved with activities, Sing their hearts out to modern church music (led by our Praise Group on keyboard and guitars). Learn about Jesus and the Gospel while having fun.

If you have not been to the service before, then please come along and support your children in what has become a vital link between your church, your school and your Uniformed Organisation. There are 5/6 services per year on Sunday mornings. Please see school news letter, church magazine or website for dates and start time.

Lowton West Residents Meeting Residents in Lowton West (west side of Slag Lane and adjacent roads including Scott Road estate) have decided to form a non-political neighbourhood group to discuss local issues and work together to improve our area. A Constitution has been agreed and a committee formed with all posts being filled by volunteers. Meetings will take place on the last Tuesday of each month, 7.30pm in the Community Room at Manor Court and elected representatives will be invited along regularly to address residents concerns. Why not come along and find out what is happening in our local area and make some new friends?
