The rules for sudoku are simple. The 9×9 square must be filled in with numbers from 1-9 with no repeated numbers in each line, horizontally or vertically. To challenge you more, there are 3×3 squares marked out in the grid, and each of these squares can’t have any repeat numbers either.

Please see page 18 for the answers.

Two French armies march towards the bridge, one from the North and one from the South. If they meet the British are lost. Only Sharpe’s small group of men with their cunning and courage to rely onstand in their way. But they’re rapidly outnumbered and time is running out.

The attention comes from The Secretary of Defence who calls for an inter-agency task force to investigate. Jack Reacher recently demoted from Major is assigned as the Army’s representative. Top 10 autumn tips to prepare your Autumn is your opportunity to get rid of dead vegetation left over from the summer, tidy your borders, clear out your gutters, and more. This season is all about picking up and packing down before the arrival of winter. Here are our top ten tips to make the most of your autumn garden.

Scrub off shade paint

Tidy up borders

As the nights draw in, make the most of the available light by scrubbing shade paint from your greenhouse windows. This lets more of the sun’s rays through the glass, helping winter temperatures to climb that little bit higher, saving you money on heating.

To ensure a vibrant display next spring, dig up annuals and plant your beds with pansies, bellis daisies and wallflowers. Cut back faded perennials to 5 cm above ground level, but don’t be too tidy – attractive seed heads are great for insects, look wonderful covered in autumn dew, and provide handsome winter silhouettes.

A bucket of hot water and some elbow grease is all it takes to bring the glass up sparkling clean. Now’s a good time to check and replace damaged panes, and clear your greenhouse gutters too.

Once your borders are clean and tidy, spread a thick layer of compost, bark chips or well–rotted manure. Don’t worry about digging it in – let the worms do the hard work for you.

Lawn Care Autumn clean Before overwintering tender plants, remove everything from your greenhouse, sweep out plant debris, and disinfect all paths and staging, including the inside of the glass. A hot solution of garden disinfectant or Jeyes Fluid will help to prevent pests and fungal infection. Ventilate your greenhouse over the next couple of days to dry it thoroughly. Also clean pots and seed trays in preparation for spring sowing and planting. 14

I S S U E 0 4 | N O V/ D E C 2 0 2 3

Remove thatch and moss using a spring-tined rake and add it to the compost heap. If you have large amounts of moss, you may want to use a moss killer on your lawn first. Brush in a sandy top dressing afterwards, followed by an application of autumn lawn feed to prepare your lawn for the cold winter months. Improve drainage and aeration around paths and play areas by making deep holes with the prongs of a garden fork at 10 cm intervals. Autumn is a great time to lay new turf too, giving it plenty of time to establish before next summer.

garden for winter Make leaf mould

Lift tender species

Leaf mould adds structure and organic matter to your soil and is a great way to recycle fallen leaves. Choose a sheltered spot that won’t spoil the view of your garden and using wire mesh and wooden stakes, make a large bin. Fill with leaves, sprinkle with water and leave.

Do lift tender species like begonias, dahlias, and cannas before the first frosts threaten. Cut back the stems and gently lift the tubers/rhizomes from the ground. Clean the soil from them and store in trays of dry compost or sand, with just the top of crown visible.

Once the leaves reach a crumbly texture, spread as a mulch throughout your borders. Oak, alder, beech, and hornbeam rot fairly quickly while sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut, and sweet chestnut may take a little longer. Shredding the leaves first will help to speed things up, but in general the process takes about two years.

Put the trays in a cool, frost free place over the winter ready for replanting when spring arrives and all risk of frost has passed. In very mild areas it may be possible to protect tender species without lifting them, instead covering the crowns with a thick blanket of mulch.

Clear out compost bins The autumn clear up of borders and vegetable plots always generates a lot of plant material for your compost heap. Now is the ideal time to clear out last year’s compost and use it around the garden, making room for this year’s waste. If your compost isn’t quite ready, turn it to improve decomposition, and create a new heap next to it for fresh organic matter. You can never have too much compost.

Plant evergreens Evergreens provide structure and interest during the drab months of winter. Warm soil and cooler air temperatures make autumn the perfect time to fill gaps in your borders with evergreens like sarcococca and daphne which provide glossy, green leaves and beautifully fragrant flowers even in the depths of winter. For an elegant larger shrub, try spring flowering camellias, or fatsia for its large architectural foliage. Alternatively, box or yew are ideal choices for topiary enthusiasts, while Lonicera nitida, bay, and holly make wonderful formal shapes or excellent evergreen hedges.

Net ponds Decomposing leaves turn your pond water foul and block filters on pumps. Save time and effort later, by catching falling leaves before they hit your pond. Spread a fine meshed net across the pond and pin it down with bricks. Remove any leaves that fall onto it and add them to your leaf mould bin or compost heap.

Maintain garden equipment Before you store your lawn mower at the back of the shed for the winter, it’s well worth sending it for a service to ensure that it’s in perfect condition when you need it next spring. Shears and secateurs need sharpening – do this yourself or send them away if you prefer – while spades, forks, and other tools benefit from a good wash. Dry everything thoroughly and oil metal parts to prevent rust. Wooden handles can be cleaned and protected with linseed oil – but do dispose of rags carefully as linseed can combust as it dries. Now your autumn garden is clean, tidy and ready for winter. Not only will the view from your house be so much more pleasant, but you’ll also have a head start when spring arrives and it’s time to get growing again. www.locallifemagazine.co.uk

Find more balance in your life In turbulent times many of us harness ways to feel grounded to calm anxiety and sooth stress, so it’s not surprising that alternative therapies like crystal healing have come to the fore.

Benefits: The proposed healing benefits of crystals predominantly surround areas of mental well being; including feelings of tranquility, positivity and focus, as well as enhanced immunity and pain relief. Individual crystals are also known to have their own special energies that align to different areas of your life, with their shape and colour as well as their type affecting their influence. • • • • • • • •

Crystal healing is an ancient therapy that utilises the natural power of crystals and gemstones to improve health and wellbeing. Crystal healing is holistic, meaning that the treatment restores health and balance at all levels, emotional, physical and spiritual.

• • •

Provides a sense calmness, peace and tranquility Releases anxiety and stress Increases levels of alertness and concentration Lifts feelings of depression, despondency and desperation Eases mental tiredness Balances Chakra energy Releases stagnant energy, boosting available energy on all levels Connects you to a place of inner peace and healing Helps to develop spirituality and find your true purpose in life Provides a general feeling of being healed There are many physical benefits too, helping with lots of common ailments.

The concept of using crystals to heal has been around for centuries. But with celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Adele speaking publicly about their belief in the practice, there has been a mainstream resurgence in recent years. Adele has been particularly open about her battle with stage fright and has frequently spoken about the use of crystals to calm her nerves. In your session you will be fully clothed and laying on the bed. The therapist will check the flow of each of the seven main chakras and bring them back to balance. A combination of appropriate healing crystals are chosen and placed on the chakras and bring balance back to mind, body and spirit. The treatment is suitable for everyone. Perfect for those needing a less invasive treatment to bring help during difficult times, ease stress and anxiety or physical healing for the body. 16

A faithful adaption of Harlan Coben’s young adult series about Mickey Bolitar, a traumatised teenager who moves to live with his aunt in New Jersey suburb after his father is killed in a car accident. What unfolds is initially a textbook US high school drama – Mickey falls in with the goths and the geeks and finds himself set against the jock with the racist cop dad. But there’s a supernatural element too as Mickey starts to suspect that a creepy old house could hold secrets connected to his father’s life and death.

Based in Quantico, Virginia, the Behavioural Analysis Unit is a subsection of the F.B.I. Called in by local Police departments to assist in solving crimes of a serial and/or extremely violent nature where the perpetrator is unknown, The Behavioural Analysis Unit uses the controversial scientific art of profiling to track and apprehend the suspect. Profiling entails coming up with basic characteristics of the unknown subject and the victims using evidence from the case and matching that information to historic precedents and psychological analyses as a means to solve the case. Because of the nature of the work conducted. - the work being time consuming and psychologically demanding - its members are fiercely loyal to the Unit and to its other members.

Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive.

Time to Hibernate

The transition from the warmth of summer to the shorter days and Autumnal mists is not just an important time for us. Among the most endearing and vulnerable creatures seeking shelter and sustenance during this season are hedgehogs. This small, spiky gardeners’ friend plays a crucial role in maintaining garden ecosystems by keeping pests in check. We can do so much to support hedgehogs by helping make sure they can survive their upcoming hibernation. Hedgehogs are natural predators of a variety of insects, slugs and snails. By munching on these garden pests, they help maintain a balanced and healthy ecosystem without the need for harmful pesticides. This natural pest control not only benefits your garden but also supports the broader environment by reducing the use of chemical toxins. And they’re super cute! Autumn is a crucial time for hedgehogs because it marks the beginning of their hibernation period. Hedgehogs, unlike some animals that migrate or stay active throughout the winter, 22

I S S U E 0 4 | N O V/ D E C 2 0 2 3

enter a state of torpor during the coldest months. They rely on the fat reserves they’ve built up in the preceding months to survive hibernation, which can last from October to March or even longer in some cases. Hedgehogs need to reach a healthy weight before entering hibernation to ensure their chances of surviving until Spring. If they are underweight, they may not make it through the winter. This is where you can make a real difference. Hedgehogs have specific dietary needs and its essential to offer them suitable food. Commercial hedgehog food or a mix of wet cat or dog food along with water is ideal. Avoid giving them bread and milk as these can be harmful to their digestive system. Designate a specific area in your garden for hedgehog feeding. You can use a shallow dish or tray for the food and a shallow bowl for water. Ensure that the feeding station is easily accessible for hedgehogs but protected from other animals like cats or foxes.
