A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

Supporting Young Students In the New School Year

As the new school year begins, young students embark on an exciting journey of learning and growth. For parents, this time brings the challenge of providing the right support to help their children thrive academically and emotionally. Here are some key strategies for parents to support their young students

Consistency is crucial for young students. Establishing a daily routine helps children feel secure and organised. Set regular times for homework, meals, and bedtime to ensure they get enough rest and are ready for school each day. At home, create a dedicated space for studying that is free from distractions. Make sure this space is well-lit and stocked with necessary supplies like pencils, paper, and books. A positive learning environment encourages focus and productivity.

in their children's education by attending parent-teacher meetings, school events, and volunteering when possible. Keeping in touch with teachers helps parents stay informed about their child's progress and any areas where they might need extra support.

Encourage your child to talk about their school day and share any concerns they might have. Being a good listener shows that you value their feelings and experiences. Addressing issues early can prevent them from becoming bigger problems later on. While academics are important, ensure your child has time for play and relaxation. Encourage participation in sports, arts, and other extracurricular activities to help them develop a well-rounded personality and relieve stress.

resources to help support young students and their families. The Croydon Council provides information on local schools, educational programs, and extracurricular activities.

If your child is struggling academically or emotionally, don't hesitate to seek additional support. Croydon has several support services, including educational psychologists, tutoring programs, and counselling services, to help students overcome challenges and succeed in school.

With the right guidance and resources, children can achieve their full potential and enjoy a rewarding educational experience.

“Contribution to British Society”

The Windrush generation has left an indelible mark on British culture and society. Figures like Sir Trevor newsreader on British television, and Baroness Floella Benjamin, an actress and politician, have made substantial contributions to media and politics. Musicians, writers, and artists from the Caribbean have enriched British culture, with reggae music and Caribbean literature becoming integral parts of the nation's cultural fabric. We are not angry, we are ... overstimulated

Have you ever felt frustrated after hearing “Mummy” for the hundredth time in a day? Are there moments when everything irritates you—the TV blaring, the noise from outside, even the birds singing? I know I have. And then, there are those times when I’ve snapped at my loved ones—sometimes shouting, other times withdrawing into myself—only to be left drowning in guilt afterwards, wondering why I got so angry in the mums, we are not angry. We’re overstimulated.

We don’t talk about this enough, but we should. You’re not alone in feeling this way. I see you, and I feel you. Many of us live with this undercurrent of frustration, an irritability that seems to bubble up without warning. But the truth is, it’s not anger at our children, our partners, or our lives. It’s the result of being overwhelmed—by noise, demands, and the constant need to be everything for everyone. Just as overstimulation can send a child into a meltdown, it can also bring us, as mothers, to our knees. Recognising this can help us be kinder to ourselves as we navigate the endless demands of motherhood.

Here’s something I’ve learned: taking care of ourselves isn’t just necessary; it’s an act of survival. Whether it’s early morning before the rest of the house wakes up, sneaking away for a short walk alone, or simply taking a few deep breaths when the noise and demands get too much—these small acts of self-care can make a world of

our breath, like there’s no room left in our heads for our thoughts, let alone any sense of peace. And if you’re a working mum, that feeling of overload is multiplied as you juggle the expectations of your job with everything else on your plate.

Understanding Overstimulation

From the moment our eyes open in into bed at night, we are on call. Our children need us for meals, homework help, emotional support, a kiss for a scraped knee, a toy retrieved from under the couch, a glass of water at bedtime. Our partners, too, look to us for companionship, for managing the household, and for shared responsibilities. It’s no wonder we sometimes feel like we can’t catch

Overstimulation isn’t just a buzzword— it’s a real and often overwhelming experience. It happens when we’re bombarded with more sensory input, emotional demands, or responsibilities than we can manage. For us mothers, it often means living in a world of constant noise, facing a neverending to-do list, and shouldering the emotional labour of keeping a household and family running smoothly. Unlike a typical job where you can clock out and leave your work behind, motherhood is relentless. It’s a 24/7 gig that doesn’t allow for breaks, and constant pressure can lead to overstimulation.

When overstimulated, it’s easy to mistake irritation or frustration for anger. We might snap at our children or our partners and then feel terrible about it later. But in reality, it’s not anger—it’s the exhaustion of being constantly needed, of never having a moment to ourselves. It’s being drained, not by any one thing but by

For single mothers, this experience

Communicating openly with our partners and children about our need for personal space can help, too. It’s okay to ask for time alone, to set boundaries, and to make it clear that we can’t pour from an empty cup. Having a support system—whether it’s family, friends, or even an online community of other moms—can be a lifeline. Sharing the load, asking for help, and knowing we’re not alone in this struggle can provide the relief we desperately need. Joining a mothers’

sense of solidarity and provide practical tips for managing the chaos. Even arranging childcare swaps with other mums can give us those precious few hours to recharge.

might also help create a better worklife balance. Working from home or adjusting your hours could give you more breathing room, more time for self-care, and more opportunities to be present for your family without feeling overwhelmed.

The

It’s time we start talking openly about what we’re going through. Our partners, families, and society must understand that when we seem overwhelmed, it’s not because we’re angry at our loved ones. It’s because we’re trying to navigate the relentless demands placed on us, often with little support or understanding.

When those around us acknowledge support, and give us the space to breathe, it lightens the load.

responsibilities, running a household, and possibly working outside the home can feel unbearable without a partner to share the load. The weight of it all can lead to an even deeper sense of exhaustion and overstimulation.

So, to every mum reading this: I see you. You are not alone. And it’s okay not to be okay sometimes. It’s okay to ask for help, to take a break, and to remind yourself that you’re not angry—you’re just overstimulated. And that’s something we can work through together.

As I set foot in Switzerland, I was immediately struck by its breathtaking beauty. This small but mighty country, nestled in the heart of Europe, promised an adventure like no other.

Zurich: Where Tradition Meets Modernity

My journey began in Zurich, a city

I strolled along the shores of Lake Zurich, the crystal-clear waters mirrored the majestic Alps, creating a postcard-perfect scene. The bustling Bahnhofstrasse beckoned with its

luxury boutiques, but it was the winding streets of the Old Town that truly captured my heart. Each corner revealed a new treasure - centuriesold buildings rubbing shoulders with quaint cafes and artisanal shops.

Diving into Swiss culture, I found myself lost in the masterpieces at the Zurich Art Museum. The Swiss

journey through the country’s rich history, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for this alpine nation. As night fell, I couldn’t resist the allure of Niederdorf. The district came

alive with a vibrant energy, its bars and restaurants buzzing with locals and tourists alike. I savoured every moment, realising that Zurich was

Lungern: A Hidden Alpine Gem Next, I ventured to the picturesque village of Lungern. As I approached, the sight of emerald-green Lungern took my breath away. The lake’s

the surrounding mountains, creating a scene straight out of a fairytale.

I spent my days exploring peaceful lakeside trails. The village’s charming chapel and traditional Swiss chalets added to the idyllic atmosphere. One evening, my friends and I took a boat ride on the lake, watching in awe as the setting sun painted the sky in brilliant colours. I found myself falling in love with this hidden gem, grateful for the chance to experience Switzerland’s quieter side.

Grindelwald First: Adrenaline in the Alps

Have you really experienced Switzerland without some alpine thrills? Of course not, so I headed to Grindelwald First in the Bernese Alps. The gondola ride up was an experience of snow-capped peaks and pristine valleys.

At the top, I plucked up the courage heart raced as I inched along the narrow walkway, but the spectacular views made it worthwhile. I went down the mountain on the First Flyer zipline

for an extra dose of adrenaline. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the gravity-karting experience. Hurtling down the mountain’s winding track, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, was an experience I’ll never forget.

A Sweet Finale: Indulging in Swiss Chocolate

No Swiss adventure would be complete without savouring the country’s worldfamous chocolate. I embarked on a delicious journey through Switzerland’s chocolate heritage, visiting factories and indulging in tastings. The smooth, up to its reputation. From the classic milk chocolate of Lindt to the unique triangular shape of Toblerone, each bite was a moment of pure bliss. I left with a suitcase full of sweet souvenirs, eager to share a taste of Switzerland with friends and family back home.

As my Swiss adventure came to an end, I found myself already planning my return. With its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences, Switzerland captured my heart. I give it a big thumbs-up as a recommended destination for the adventurous type.

How is Hyrox different from other competitions, and why is it so popular?

It is not a coincidence that Hyrox is arguably the fastest-growing

First, you don’t need to have experience with other sports. You don’t need to know how to deadlift, clean, snatch, handstand walk, or swim. This means everyone can do it; however, this doesn’t mean you can just jump into a race without training like for a 5k-10k running event. Hyrox consists of stations with fundamental movement patterns, like the squat, lunge, push, pull and carry. the main celebrations occurring on the third day, which coincides with the darkest night of the month, usually in October or November.

The origins of Diwali can be traced back to various historical and mythological events. For Hindus, it commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, marking the victory of good over evil. Sikhs celebrate the release of Guru Hargobind Singh from imprisonment, while Jains honour the spiritual awakening of Lord Mahavira. The festival is characterised by the lighting of diyas (oil lamps), decorating homes with colourful rangoli designs, and performing prayers to deities like Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom.

In preparation for Diwali, families often clean and renovate their homes, buy new clothes, and exchange gifts. The festival is also a time for feasting, with traditional sweets and savoury snacks being shared among friends and family. Fireworks and community gatherings further enhance the festive spirit, making Diwali a joyful occasion that fosters unity and togetherness.

Happy shopping, and happy saving!

For generations, the high street has been the beating heart of British communities. A vibrant tapestry of independent shops, bustling markets, and familiar department stores, it served not only as a shopping destination but also as a social hub. However, in recent years, a creeping emptiness has begun to cast a shadow over these once-thriving commercial districts. The question on everyone's lips is: Is the high street dying?

The short answer is yes. The traditional high street is facing a multitude of challenges. The rise of online retail giants like Amazon and ASOS has irrevocably altered consumer behaviour. The convenience of home shopping, coupled with often-competitive prices, has lured customers away from brick-and-mortar stores. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the situation.

Forced closures and social distancing measures dealt a severe blow to high street businesses, many struggling to adapt to the online landscape.

However, the culprit list doesn't

end there. Rising business costs, particularly rent and commercial rates, have squeezed the life out of many small businesses. The cost of living crisis, on top of these expenses, has created a perfect storm, pushing some retailers to the brink of closure.

Here's the thing, the consequences of a declining high street are farreaching. The loss of independent shops goes beyond the closure of a business; it impacts the very fabric of our community. Local businesses often sponsor local events, support charities, and provide employment opportunities for residents. Their absence creates a vacuum, fostering a sense of disconnection and loss of identity.

But is it all doom and gloom?

Thankfully, there are glimmers of hope. A growing sentiment of "shop local" is gaining traction. Consumers are increasingly recognising the importance of supporting independent businesses that enrich their communities. Additionally, some local authorities are taking proactive measures.

One strategy involves reimagining the high street as a multi-purpose destination. Integrating leisure activities, community spaces, and pop-up shops alongside established retailers can create a more vibrant and appealing experience for visitors. relief or provide grants to struggling businesses can incentivise them to stay

The high street's survival hinges on its ability to adapt. Independent shops need to embrace the digital world, establishing a strong online presence to complement their physical stores. Investing in click-and-collect services

help them compete with the giants of e-commerce.

Ultimately, a multipronged approach is needed. We as consumers need to actively support local businesses, local authorities need to implement initiatives that foster economic development, and independent retailers need to embrace digitalisation and explore creative concepts.

Can the high street be revived? It's not an easy feat, but by recognising the challenges, supporting local shops, and fostering a spirit of community, we can breathe new life into these treasured hubs of British commerce.

Aand bring extra joy to your own? Adopting an animal might be the best decision you make this year. Imagine coming home to wagging tails, purring cuddles, and the undeniable charm of a loyal companion!

Why adopt and not buy?

Shelters often include vaccinations, microchipping, and spaying/neutering in the adoption fee, which saves you money. Also, shelter pets receive medical care, ensuring they are healthy. Sustainable Thornton Heath

is a community group run by volunteers that was established in 2019 to help make Thornton Heath and the surrounding area a more sustainable place to live.

The local residents that set it up wanted to do what they could to take action at a local level in the face of the growing Climate & Ecological Emergency, where they felt they could have some impact and see some change.

The group has evolved and developed, especially after COVID, and is now focused on running two regular events in Thornton Heath and South Norwood:

MONTHLY ELECTRICAL REPAIR EVENTS where people can get free help with repairing most electrical items in their homes.

BI-MONTHLY ECO LIVING FESTS where people can get free help with repairing cycles and electricals, receive information and advice across a range of eco-living topics, learn skills such as clothes mending, reusing and recycling, and have fun and enjoy a very positive community vibe!

Like many community groups, we are entirely run on the goodwill of volunteers. Without volunteers, we are nothing.

We are lucky enough to have a good management committee, most of whom have been around since we set the group up back in 2019. We also have a small army of volunteers enabling our electrical repair events and Eco Living Fests to take place, which we have been doing for 2-3 years.

However, we need more people for the following reasons:
