Planning ahead thoughtfully Why more people are putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place Law firms are beginning to see a gradual shift in how people approach long-term planning. Alongside Wills, pensions and investment arrangements, many are also choosing to put Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) in place much earlier in life. This isn’t out of concern, but from a desire for clarity and control.

Putting an LPA in place while circumstances are stable allows decisions to be considered calmly and without pressure. It ensures responsibility rests with people you have personally chosen, reflecting your wishes and values.

An LPA is a straightforward legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you were ever unable to do so due to loss of mental capacity.

Once viewed primarily as something for later life, LPAs are now widely regarded as part of sensible modern planning.

A common misconception is that creating an LPA means giving up control. In practice, the opposite is true. While you have mental capacity, you remain fully in control of your affairs. Attorneys can only act when needed and must always follow strict legal duties to act in your best interests.

Preparing for the unexpected

Many people now prepare LPAs alongside their Wills, recognising that the two documents serve different purposes.

A Will sets out your wishes after death; an LPA protects you during your lifetime if circumstances change.

Loss of capacity is rarely predictable. It may follow illness, an accident or a sudden medical event. When this happens, even everyday matters such as managing finances or making healthcare decisions can quickly become complicated for those closest to you.

An LPA allows trusted individuals, known as Attorneys, to step in if required. A Health and Welfare LPA covers decisions about medical treatment, care arrangements and personal wellbeing. While a Property and Financial Affairs LPA enables Attorneys to manage finances, property and practical matters.

For those with demanding careers, family responsibilities or complex financial arrangements, the reassurance lies in continuity. Affairs can continue without interruption, guided by decisions made in advance rather than left to uncertainty.

Avoiding unnecessary complications Without an LPA in place, families often need to apply to the Court of Protection for authority to act. The process can be lengthy and involves ongoing court supervision. At a time when families may already be coping with emotional strain, the additional administrative responsibility can often feel overwhelming.

rtists at Home returns to Chiswick, Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush from 19–21 June, offering a rare opportunity to step inside working studios, meet artists in their own environments, and experience a wide range of contemporary art across the area. Now in its sixth decade, this much-loved open studio event continues to evolve—this year bringing together an exciting mix of new voices alongside artists with well-established practices.

Across the weekend, visitors can follow a trail through local homes and studios, discovering painting, ceramics, printmaking, photography, jewellery and more. What makes Artists at Home distinctive is its informality and directness: this is not a gallery setting, but a chance to encounter work where it is made, to talk to artists about their process, and to see the breadth of creativity embedded in the community.

This year sees the introduction of ten new artists, bringing fresh perspectives and approaches. Among them are ceramic artist Karen Young, whose work focuses on texture and abstract sculptural forms, often embellished with lustres and metallic leaf; painter Jan Anil, who works with oils and inks to create expressive landscapes and seascapes; and Catherine Beckett, whose contemporary jewellery explores layered surfaces and rich texture. Together, they bring a sense of energy and curiosity that complements the strength of the wider group.

Alongside these new additions are more established artists who continue to shape the identity of the event. Among them are Mary West and Gillian Brett, both of whom have had particularly busy and successful years. Their work reflects a depth of experience and a sustained commitment to their practice, offering visitors the chance to see how ideas develop and mature over time. The balance between emerging and established artists is central to the appeal of Artists at Home, creating a lively and varied dialogue across disciplines.

Visitors can expect a rich and engaging mix of work. Painters show pieces ranging from bold, large-scale compositions to more intimate studies; ceramicists present both functional and sculptural forms; photographers offer closely observed and often unexpected perspectives; and jewellers bring finely crafted pieces that balance design and wearability. Whether drawn to colour, form, texture or process, there is something here to capture attention and spark interest.

WHY ART BELONGS IN THE HOME

W

e often think of art as something encountered in galleries— framed, lit and set apart. But its real power is felt much closer to home.

Living with art, in whatever form, changes the atmosphere of a space and the way we experience it.

Art brings texture, colour and focus into everyday life. A painting can shift the mood of a room; a ceramic piece can anchor a table or shelf; a photograph can draw the eye and invite a pause. These are small but meaningful interventions that shape how a home feels to live in.

More than decoration, art creates connection. We respond instinctively to objects that carry evidence of making— marks, gestures, surfaces that reveal the hand of the artist. These qualities invite curiosity and often spark conversation, whether with visitors or simply within our own daily routines.

Living with art also encourages us to slow down. In a world that is increasingly fast and screen-based, physical objects offer a different kind of engagement. They ask

to be looked at, noticed over time, and appreciated in changing light and context.

FROM £1.7M TO £4.6M: TWO CHISWICK SALES THAT DEMONSTRATE THE POWER OF EXPERIENCE

In property, it’s easy to assume results are dictated by price.

That the higher the value, the greater the expertise required, and that the most impressive outcomes are reserved for the most expensive homes.

In reality, what matters most is the approach behind the sale. Two recent transactions in Chiswick, at very different levels of the market, demonstrate exactly that.

With the right strategy, we believed there was an opportunity to exceed those expectations, and the property was launched at £1.7 million.

Rather than rushing, we allowed the market time to engage properly. Over ten days, 15 buyers were introduced, each given the opportunity to view, reflect, and return if needed. That created something far more valuable than speed: competition.

The result was a sale agreed at the full asking price within ten days, setting a new benchmark for price per square foot on the road.

The buyer, a cash purchaser from Kensington, was introduced through our wider network, a reminder that the right buyer is not always the most obvious one.

Precision and Persistence on Chiswick Mall At the other end of the market sat Red Lion House on Chiswick Mall, one of the most significant local sales this year.

There were further complexities, including insurance challenges linked to the property’s redevelopment potential. These are the moments where experience and relationships matter most.

The property had initially been offered off-market through another agent, without achieving a sale. At this level, close to £5 million, success relies less on exposure and more on identifying the right buyer and introducing them in the right way.

More Than Just Price While these two sales sit at very different levels of the market, the principle remains the same.

Working from a small pool of carefully considered buyers, we introduced one individual we had been advising for some time.

While their search had focused elsewhere in Chiswick, our understanding of both the buyer and the property suggested a strong alignment.

Inside THE KITCHEN GARDEN Rosie Fyles Takes Us Around The Chiswick House & Gardens’ Hidden Gem

H

idden behind the wider grounds of Chiswick House & Gardens is a space that feels almost untouched

by London’s pace. The noise softens almost immediately when you step inside, the paths open into flowers, herbs, fruit trees and vegetable beds, and suddenly the city feels very far away.

At the centre of it all is Rosie Fyles, Head of Gardens at Chiswick House & Gardens, who, alongside her team, continues to shape the garden into a place that is both beautiful and deeply connected to the community. We spoke with her to learn more about what makes the Kitchen Garden such a special part of Chiswick House & Gardens.

“For us, it’s a really beautiful place that people want to visit and spend time in,” starts Rosie. “It’s free, and it’s open four days a week, and anyone can come in.”

The kitchen garden has become a space for schools, volunteers, community groups and visitors to learn, grow and reconnect with nature. It produces vegetables and flowers, supports educational programmes and creates what Rosie describes as “a different atmosphere” in the middle of London.

“There are over 200 fruit trees in here,” Rosie says. “We wanted to create a garden that has really high horticultural standards, but also for the community, not to have compromises.”

What makes the kitchen garden unusual is the number of roles it plays at once. “It’s not set up to be as absolutely productive per square centimetre as possible,” Rosie explains. “It needs visitor space. It needs to be beautiful and accessible and understandable for people.”

The garden grows more than three tonnes of produce a year, with around half donated to community causes. “We donate at least as much as we sell,” Rosie shares.

Flowers and produce are sold from a small pop-up stall on Thursdays and Saturdays, while many flowers are also donated to charities.

“We’re cutting buckets of flowers for £30, so people can take away a big beautiful bucket of flowers grown here and arrange them however they wish.”

The garden changes through the seasons, from roses and peonies to sweet peas, sunflowers and dahlias. “All the things you’d expect in a British cut flower garden, really.”

The Community at the Heart of the Garden The garden relies heavily on volunteers and community support.

“Our volunteers give us thousands of hours a year,” Rosie explains. “We have volunteers who work on the productive side, edible side, and people who work with flowers.”

The wider community also contributes through memberships, café visits and donations.

“Anything that is made in terms of income is ploughed back into the community work, and this garden is at the centre of our community work,” Rosie adds.

School programmes have become an especially important part of the project.

“The goal in the next few years is getting up to about 6,000 children a year,” says Rosie. A new learning hub currently under development will allow more school groups and community organisations to use the space.

“It’s basically using an area that was otherwise empty and redundant. Now it’s bringing everything together and opening it all up.”

The aim is not simply to teach gardening, but to reconnect children with how food grows.

Sustainability and Organic Growing Sustainability is deeply woven into how the garden operates.

“The whole of the gardens now is operated on organic principles,” Rosie tells us.

The kitchen garden uses no-dig methods, avoids chemicals wherever possible, and focuses on creating a circular system where waste becomes part of the growing process.

“Anything that is a weed or a log or anything like that is used in another way and eventually creates better soil,” Rosie explains.

Rainwater is collected from surrounding roofs and stored for irrigation, while pollinators are encouraged through planting and beekeeping projects.

“We have beehives over the other side of the wall, and this year we’re trialling school groups coming in and working with our beekeepers,” says Rosie.

A Space to Slow Down For Rosie and the garden team, one of the

most rewarding moments is seeing visitors experience the space for the first time.

“The best thing is when you see a little kid come in and something just makes them go, ‘Wow.’ I would love people to just think they’ve visited a beautiful place where it feels like you’ve entered a different atmosphere.”

Even regular visitors often discover something new — whether it’s the tea garden with more than 16 varieties of mint, the flower borders, or simply the quietness of the space.

As the garden continues to grow, Rosie hopes more people will discover it. “We’re just trying to create a lovely place for people,” she says.

And perhaps that’s the simplest way to describe the kitchen garden. A place where flowers are cut by hand, vegetables are shared, volunteers gather around tea tables built from reclaimed wood, and children stop in the middle of a path just to stare at a rose.

CHISWICK FLOWER MARKET OPENED 2026 COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAMME The Chiswick Flower Market’s 2026 Community Grants Programme is open, offering a total of £30,000 in funding for projects that help make Chiswick greener, more sustainable and more connected.

Grants of up to £3,000 are available to charities, community groups, schools, non-profit organisations and small independent businesses based in Chiswick and the surrounding W4 area. The programme supports initiatives that benefit the local community, promote Chiswick High Road, or enhance environmental sustainability, biodiversity and urban greening.

Since launching last year, the fund has already awarded £17,500 to a range of local projects, helping improve community gardens, support youth activities, enhance biodiversity and upgrade facilities used for local plant sales. These include improvements to the garden at Cavendish Primary School, including the creation of a sensory garden; funding for art materials and room hire for the Hogarth Estate Junior Youth Group; enhancements to the community garden at St Paul’s Church to support biodiversity; expanded wellbeing, arts and physical activity programmes delivered

by W4 Youth; biodiversity planting and school garden improvements led by Wild Chiswick; upgrades to greenhouses and equipment used for community plant sales by the Chiswick Horticultural and Allotments Society; plants for the community garden at Wendell Park Gardening Friends to diversify planting and attract bees and birds; development of the Brooks Lane garden and school gardening projects at Strand on the Green Junior School; gardening equipment for volunteers working in the walled garden at Friends of the Walled

Garden in Ravenscourt Park; and accessibility improvements at Number One Allotment Chiswick Trust to help adults with learning disabilities and impaired mobility safely grow vegetables, fruit and flowers.

Plant-Powered Quinoa Sushi Plate Serves: 4 Ingredients

Zesty Rocket, Walnut & Quinoa Salad Serves: 4 Ingredients • 1 cup quinoa • 2 cups water • 100g rocket • 3 spring onions, chopped • 1 bell pepper, finely chopped • 8 cherry tomatoes, chopped • 3 button mushrooms, finely chopped • 1 cucumber, chopped

• Small bunch of parsley, finely chopped • Handful of olives, sliced • Handful of walnuts, finely crushed

Dressing • Extra virgin olive oil • Juice of key limes • Salt and black pepper • Cayenne pepper (optional)

Method 1. Rinse the quinoa thoroughly, then add to a saucepan with 2 cups of water.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer until the water is absorbed and the quinoa is fluffy. Allow to cool completely before adding to the salad.

3. In a large bowl, combine the rocket, spring onions, bell pepper, cherry tomatoes,

mushrooms, cucumber, parsley, and olives.

4. Add the cooled quinoa and gently toss everything together.

5. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and fresh key lime juice. Season with salt, black pepper, and optional cayenne pepper to taste.

6. Finish with a generous sprinkle of crushed walnuts over the top.

Method Prepare the Quinoa 1. Rinse the quinoa thoroughly, then add to a saucepan with 2 cups of water.

2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer until the quinoa is light and fluffy.

3. Allow the quinoa to cool completely before assembling the sushi rolls.

Assemble the Sushi Rolls 1. Lay a sheet of nori flat on a sushi mat or clean surface.

2. Spread a layer of cooled quinoa across the nori, leaving a small border around the edges.

3. Add strips of bell pepper, cucumber, jalapeños, and sauerkraut.

4. Roll tightly into sushi rolls, sealing the edge with a little water if needed.

Bean & Tomato Side Salad • 1 can chickpeas • 1 can kidney beans • 10 cherry tomatoes, halved • Handful of sun-dried tomatoes • 1 long green pepper, thinly sliced • Extra virgin olive oil • Salt and black pepper

5. Slice into bite-sized rounds using a sharp knife.

Prepare the Hummus 1. Spoon hummus into a serving bowl.

2. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and finish with paprika and sumac over the top.

Make the Side Salad 1. In a large bowl, combine the chickpeas, kidney beans, cherry tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, and sliced green pepper.

2. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and black pepper.

3. Toss gently until evenly coated.

Serving Serve the quinoa sushi rolls alongside the spiced hummus and fresh bean salad.

Empowering Women Through Fitness Interview by Daniela Milusheva

Sarah Campus is a holistic wellness expert, personal trainer, marathon-running mother of three, and the founder of LDN MUMS FITNESS. She has spent more than a decade helping women prioritise their health and wellbeing. Specialising in pre- and postnatal fitness, she launched her platform after recognising how many women were being told to stop exercising during pregnancy — something she is deeply passionate about changing.

Driven by her belief that movement is medicine, Sarah focuses on supporting women through every stage of motherhood, from pregnancy and labour to postpartum recovery and beyond. Her realistic and relatable approach to fitness encourages women to move their bodies in a way that feels achievable, sustainable and empowering, even within the chaos of everyday family life.

Alongside her online community, Sarah hosts a fortnightly run club from Soho House in Chiswick, as well as women’s HIIT and stretch classes designed to make fitness accessible and supportive for busy women. Through her work, she continues to inspire women to build strength physically and mentally, while showing that health and motherhood can successfully go hand in hand.

Tell us about your journey into fitness and wellbeing. How did it all start?

I’ve always been sporty throughout my whole life. At school, I swam, played tennis, did athletics, skiing. I’ve always loved sport.

Every April, though, because of Easter, things would go really quiet. There were no corporate events, everyone was away, and I realised I didn’t want to go back into the corporate world. I’d already taken the leap to work for myself full-time because I had that entrepreneurial flair. I thought, “Trust your gut. Give it a go. If you don’t try, you’ll never know.” So I asked myself: what else do I love that I could turn into something meaningful? The answer was sport and fitness.

Fitness grew from a real passion for helping women move their bodies while doing the incredible thing of growing a baby. Exercise supports not just the mother, but also the baby, the pregnancy journey, labour, postpartum recovery and beyond.

What inspired you to specialise in pre and postnatal fitness?

The number of women who stopped exercising completely during pregnancy honestly shocked me, and it made me really sad. So many women believed they should

After school, I went into the marketing and events industry and spent time in the corporate world. When I came back home, I wanted to do something different, so I started a cake business called Sprinkled Magic. It was great, although I’m actually not into sweet things at all! I loved the concept of getting brands on cakes and delivering nationwide. At one point, I was producing around 10,000 cupcakes every weekend. It was crazy and I had people in to help.

stop moving altogether just because they were pregnant, and that’s absolutely not the case.

Pregnancy isn’t a disease. It’s one of the most incredible things your body can do.

I wanted to help change that mindset because movement supports you physically and mentally throughout pregnancy and postpartum. There’s that cliché saying, “movement is medicine,” but it really is true. It helps so much.

What’s one of the biggest misconceptions you see in the fitness world, especially around pregnancy?

Absolutely. I try to keep everything as authentic and realistic as possible because I want people to relate to it.

I think people need to see that fitness can fit into real life. I wake up at 5 or 5:30 most mornings to train because that’s my “me time.” It’s my golden hour before the chaos of the day begins.

People often think motivation is the key, but it’s not. You can’t rely on motivation.

It’s discipline. It’s setting goals and showing up, whether it’s dark, raining, windy or snowing. I’ve completed three marathons while having three children under seven, and people often ask how I managed it. The answer is consistency and discipline.

Being a mum, business owner and athlete must come with huge pressure.

How do you manage it all?

A huge misconception is that pregnant women shouldn’t exercise. When I was pregnant with my first child, people constantly said things like, “Don’t lift that box,” or “Don’t do that because you’re pregnant.” And I’d think, “Why? I can lift the box. I can do these things.” It’s about listening to your body.

The research around pregnancy and exercise has progressed massively. There was even a woman who ran the Boston Marathon while 22 weeks pregnant. If you exercised before pregnancy, your doctor says you’re healthy, and you’re listening to your body, then movement is incredibly beneficial. It’s not about pushing too hard — it’s about moving safely and sensibly.

How has becoming a mum shaped your approach to fitness?

It’s actually made me stronger because I’ve realised that I am the role model for my children.

Health and fitness have always been important in my family. My parents were active and still are. But now, seeing how much I inspire my own children is beyond incredible. Honestly, it makes me emotional. They come to most of my races, whether it’s a running event or hybrid race such as HYROX, The Urban Race or ATHX, because I want them to see that their mum can do hard things. I want them to see resilience and strength in action.

I also encourage women to exercise at home because we’re all so time-poor. Getting to the gym takes time, and childcare can be difficult, so I make fitness realistic and achievable. You just need a few weights and a structured training plan.

My children are often around while I’m training, and if they join in, I don’t stop. I encourage it. They now know exercises like walking lunges and ski ergs because they’ve grown up around movement.

Your online presence feels very real and authentic. Was that intentional?

Routine is everything. Children thrive on routine, and I’ve always had a structured routine since they were born. They’ve fitted into my life and work from the start. They came to meetings with me, they travelled with me, and I made it work.

I also believe asking for help is really important. A lot of women feel they shouldn’t ask for help, but I’m lucky to have an amazing support system. My husband and my parents are incredible. That said, I probably still don’t ask for help enough!

My evening routine is also really important.

Once the children are asleep, I make time to reset, unwind and prioritise sleep because sleep is essential. Focusing on yourself isn’t selfish, it’s necessary.

Who has been your biggest supporter?

Definitely my husband and my parents. My husband works from home a couple of days a week, so if I need support with bath time or childcare while I have meetings, he steps in immediately.

My mum is also incredibly flexible and supportive, especially when I need extra help with the children. I’m very grateful for all of them.

Through your platform, you’ve inspired thousands of women. What impact are you most proud of?

What small daily habits can make the biggest difference to overall wellbeing?

First — drink 500ml of water as soon as you wake up. Your body is dehydrated after sleeping. Second is habit stacking. While you’re brushing your teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil, do calf raises, squats, arm circles or stretches. You are starting the day right with a movement.

With nutrition, I always say: instead of restricting food, ask yourself what you can add to your plate to make it more colourful, more nutritious. I encourage people to add mixed seeds to meals like porridge, yoghurt, smoothies or chilli con carne because they increase fibre, protein and healthy fats.

Fibre is so important, and most people aren’t getting enough.

Consistency is so important. You don’t need an hour in the gym every day. Five to twenty minutes of movement done consistently is enough to make a real difference.

And finally, having a wind-down routine at night to sleep well.

What’s next for you?

I’m launching my own podcast, called Showing Up Stronger, which I’m so excited about.

We have real and powerful conversations which shines a spot light on women who have achieved incredible physical and personal feat while raising a family.

I’ll also be launching regular classes at a new parent community club called Mumadoo from June. Some of the classes are specifically designed for mums and babies. You can bring your children with you. It’s not just exercise for the mums, it’s also sensory and educational for the children because they’re watching their mums prioritise health and movement from such an early age.

Finally, what inspires you the most?

My children! They’re watching everything I do, and they copy. We are their role models.

We are everything for them, and they are everything for me.

I think I’m most proud of showing women that it’s possible, even with children, busy schedules and limited time. I love getting messages from women saying, “I signed up for this because you inspired me,” and that they’ve completed it. I always respond or comment because I’m so proud of them.

The hardest part is always starting. One client of mine completely transformed her health just by strength training for 10 minutes, three times a week. We stripped everything back to basics and focused on consistency. Her transformation was incredible.

Another client trained with me through pregnancy after previously struggling with conception. She later became pregnant again, and hearing those stories is 29

BEDFORD PARK FESTIVAL 12 to 28 June 2026

First established in 1967, the festival was created to celebrate the arts, strengthen community spirit and raise funds for the church and local charitable causes. Over the decades it has become closely linked with Bedford Park’s identity as one of the world’s earliest garden suburbs and has played an important role in preserving the area’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Organisers say the festival still remains true to its founding ideals of creativity, inclusivity and neighbourhood involvement.

Days Fête and Craft Fair on Acton Green is expected to once again attract large crowds with live entertainment, food stalls, children’s activities and local crafts.

A strong emphasis is also placed on accessibility and community participation.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF READERS MC Grammar (Jacob Mitchell) has transformed classrooms, festivals and social media feeds by bringing learning to life through rap and performance.

The award-winning teacher, rapper and author first began using music in his own primary school classroom to help children engage with spelling, punctuation and grammar lessons, eventually creating the now globally recognised MC Grammar persona.

Today, MC Grammar stands as a creative force in education, using music, storytelling, and live shows to inspire children to read with confidence and curiosity. We caught up with MC Grammar to talk about his recent projects, future plans, and mission to make learning fun.

When did you realise MC Grammar was becoming bigger than just a classroom idea?

When I was teaching in the classroom, I was using rap as a learning tool, and the kids I started using it with did really well.

The moment I realised it was bigger than just my classroom was when other schools in the local borough, London Borough of Barnet, started asking me to come in and do shows. Then I started travelling to schools in places like Ipswich, Bermuda, Italy, Cyprus, Colorado.

Then, of course, the Gruffalo video went viral, I got the phone call from Ellen DeGeneres, brought my whole family to LA,

and after that, we came back to the UK and did all the chat shows. Then came a record deal with Universal and a television deal with Sky. That’s when I really thought, “Wow, this is now a real thing.”

You’ve broken a Guinness World Record, become a World Book Day ambassador and performed at huge festivals. Which achievement are you most proud of?

There have been so many amazing moments.

As a primary school teacher and English lead, World Book Day was always massive for me because I’ve always been passionate about getting children to read. Reading changed my life.

So becoming the official World Book Day Ambassador was a huge moment because it felt like the pinnacle of everything I’d worked towards.

But then, on the other hand, breaking a Guinness World Record is pretty epic too.

I used to get the Guinness World Records book every Christmas as a kid, so this year I’ll open it and actually see my face in there. What makes it special isn’t just the achievement itself, it’s the fact that it impacted so many children. We had a theatre full of kids all rapping, rhyming and celebrating language and reading together.

What’s one book every child should read before they grow up and why?

Honestly, I don’t think there’s one single book.

The problem nowadays is that children are often forced to read certain books. For me, reading is about discovery. It’s about finding what you enjoy reading.

Reading for pleasure is the key thing. It shouldn’t feel like a chore, it’s a privilege and a joy. A good book can take you anywhere. You can walk in someone else’s shoes, feel someone else’s feelings, or even discover more about yourself.

And reading doesn’t have to mean a giant novel. It could be a graphic novel, a magazine, rap lyrics, song lyrics, Harry Potter, football articles, Guinness World Records — anything. It could even just be

reading road signs on a family journey. At the end of the day, we just want children to read.

What’s the funniest thing a child has ever shouted during one of your performances?

Sometimes during shows, I ask the kids to shout out their names so we can all get to know each other.

Then I’ll ask, “What’s my name?” One child once shouted back, “MC Grandma!” I had to quickly correct them and explain that it was MC Grammar.

If you could perform with one fictional character, who would it be?

There are so many. I’d love to go back-toback with the Gruffalo and see what he thought of my rap.

Matilda would also be amazing because she’s got all the superpowers, and she could probably move the microphone into my hand while I’m performing.

What’s your mission beyond education through entertainment?

My mission is really about being a positive role model for children. A lot is happening nowadays with social media, and kids are seeing things they probably shouldn’t at such a young age. I want children to enjoy their childhood. But if they are going to follow someone online, I want to be a positive influence. MC Grammar now has influence over young minds, and I see that as a privilege and a responsibility.

I want to celebrate kindness, celebrate difference, encourage children to be themselves and continue making learning fun. Anything where I can positively impact children’s lives, I’m interested in.

What’s next for MC Grammar?

Loads is happening. We’ve got Rap Kid 3 coming out in 2027, and my first picture book, Fart in the Dark, is coming out in July.

Over the summer, we’ll be performing at many festivals, and I’m also heading out to LA to work on some exciting projects in America.

Some huge collaborations are coming to my YouTube channel very soon, including some US rappers and some really cool children’s brands.

For me, the next 12 to 18 months are all about creating loads of fun, safe and inspiring content for children and families.

I want kids to have a space where learning feels exciting and enjoyable.

The Ultimate Weekend for Little Readers 27 & 28 June 2026

For over a decade, the riverside village of Barnes has been the home of now the UK’s largest dedicated children’s literature festival. Marking a major milestone in its history, the beloved Barnes Children’s Literature Festival has officially rebranded to the London Children’s Literature Festival.

Returning on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June 2026, the festival is set to transform the banks of the Thames into a sprawling wonderland of imagination, illustration, and storytelling.

A New Chapter for a National Treasure Founded in 2015 by a group of local parents at the school gate, the festival has grown from a community initiative into a worldclass cultural event. Despite its scale, it remains the only national literature festival entirely organised and delivered by a dedicated army of over 150 volunteers, an achievement recognised in 2021 with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Amanda Brettargh, Festival Director, said, “In twelve years we’ve grown from a conversation at our school gate to become the UK’s biggest children’s books festival.

We are all volunteers at the London Children’s Literature Festival and are immensely proud of our achievements. Our new name reflects the work we have done, bringing children from all over London to events both on our school and public programmes. It’s the best job in the world and we can’t wait to welcome children and families back to Barnes for another stupendous weekend!”

To celebrate this new era, the 2026 festival branding has been designed by comics superstar Jamie Smart. The creator of the smash-hit Bunny vs Monkey series has brought his signature “total chaos” to the new logo and posters, perfectly capturing the energy of the event.

Star-Studded Storytelling The core of the festival remains its weekend public programme, featuring over 100 live events.

Leading the charge is international screen star Michael Sheen, making his festival debut alongside co-author Jess Webb and illustrator Sarah Massini to introduce their first children’s book, A Home For Spark the Dragon. For those who prefer their stories told through rhythm and rhyme, national treasure Michael Rosen will be performing alongside the book-rapping sensation MC Grammar. Dominica is one of the few islands which is still home to indigenous people.

There are 365 rivers, numerous waterfalls and 300 miles of hiking trails through lush rainforest on the island, plus black volcanic and white sand beaches. There are also nine volcanoes, of which just one is currently active. All this adds up to a nature-lover's paradise, an adventure playground, and the perfect unspoilt retreat for those looking to get away from it all in an idyllic tropical setting.

The world's second-largest hot spring lake, Boiling Lake, is a freshwater-filled volcanic crater which at present can be reached on foot via a 3-4-hour challenging hike.

The new cable car, which is due to open in October 2026, will transport visitors to the lake in about 20 minutes, making the site accessible to all.

Hiking Keen hikers can explore some of the island's most challenging walks. The UNESCOlisted Morne Trois Pitons National Park dazzles with waterfalls at every twist.

Don't miss Emerald Pool - where a 40-foot cascade spills into a hypnotic green plunge pool.

The Waitukubuli National Trail is the longest hiking route in the Caribbean, spanning 115 miles from South to North.

Take the waters Swim in the island's magical pools, said to have health-enhancing properties.

Titou Gorge is part jungle cathedral, part lava-sculpted tunnel. Formed by lava and rushing water, it's a short swim through echoing rock chambers and towering cliffs.

Light slips down the cliff walls in shafts, and you can drift in on an inflatable ring. Stop in the village of Wootton Waven, with hotwater pools and tubs filled with sulphur-rich waters bubbling from beneath the earth.

Originally known as Caribs, the Kalinago are believed to have originally come from South America and represent the last remaining tribe of the pre-Columbian Carib Indians, going back to about 3,000 BC. Visit the Kalinago Territory at Barana Autê on Dominica's east coast to learn about their culture, history, and traditions. Tours include cultural performances, and visitors can buy handcrafted products and enjoy local food.

One of the most striking landmarks here is L'Escalier Tête Chien, a staircase carved into the cliffs, believed to be the path made by a mythical serpent. A descent leads to the amazing spectacle of natural pools formed by crashing waves.

THE QUIET LOSS OF PRESENCE How our phones take away the moment

S

ome of the biggest changes in modern life have not arrived loudly. They have arrived as habits. The small habits we repeat so often no longer feel like choices: checking, scrolling, refreshing, documenting, comparing. Social media has slipped so naturally into the structure of everyday life that it can seem harmless, even invisible. In many ways, it has expanded our world. It keeps us connected, informed, entertained and in touch with lives far beyond our own. But it has also changed something quieter and more personal: our relationship with attention.

Don’t get me wrong - there is real value in social media. It gives people space to express themselves, share ideas, promote their work and feel less alone. But its effect is not always obvious enough to notice straight away. More often, it works quietly, training us to fill every pause, respond to every impulse and move quickly from one thought to the next. Over time, that can leave us less comfortable with stillness and less able to stay fully inside the moment we are actually living.

I notice this in ordinary moments. I go to my phone to check one message, and suddenly, twenty minutes have passed. I open an app without really deciding to.

I reach for my phone in the few seconds before anything has the chance to feel still in a queue, in a lift, during an advert break, or while waiting for someone. Sometimes I am not even looking for anything. It is just a habit. Just reflex. Just a learned response

to silence. That is what makes it so easy to overlook. It does not always feel harmful. It often just feels normal.

But when something becomes that constant, it starts shaping the way we live, without asking for permission. It affects what we notice, how long we can focus, how deeply we listen, and how present we are in our own experiences. One of the biggest losses is not always time itself, but the presence, the feeling of fully being somewhere, instead of slightly outside it.

And when presence is reduced, fulfilment often follows. A moment can look good, sound good, and even be well shared, yet still feel strangely thin when it is over. Not because it was not meaningful, but because part of us was never fully there for it.

Attention is what gives an experience depth.

It is what allows a conversation to land, a walk to calm you, or an evening with friends to actually stay with you afterwards.

Summer makes this even more noticeable.

It is the season people wait for: longer evenings, warmer air, holidays, pub gardens, walks, festivals, weekends that feel lighter. It is meant to be a time when we feel more alive. Yet it is also the season that tempts us to capture everything. The sunny table. The drinks. The outfit. The view.

The perfect clip. Before we know it, we can end up half-living and half-documenting, splitting the moment in two.

I have caught myself doing exactly that stepping outside an experience, before it has

even finished, to film it, post it or compare it. Becoming aware of that was my first step to a change. It helped me understand why, after some experiences, I did not always feel fulfilled. At times, I was more focused on preserving the moment than actually living it.

So I started making small changes. If I am out somewhere special, I might take a few photos or videos at the beginning, just enough to keep the memory, and then I put my phone away. If I am doing a chore I do not want to do, I put my phone on Do Not Disturb and leave it out of sight until I finish. If I am reading, meeting a friend or at the gym, I try to remove the temptation altogether. I remind myself that life is first and my phone is second.

That shift in mentality has changed me more than I expected. I feel calmer, more focused and more connected to myself. I enjoy things more deeply, and I remember them better. Even simple moments feel fuller when I stop interrupting them.

This summer, the challenge is simple: resist the urge to turn every good moment into content. Let some memories belong only to you. Take the photo, then put your phone away. Go for a walk without checking it. Sit outside without filling the silence. Journal a memory at the end of the day instead of posting it in the moment. Small choices like these may seem insignificant, but they begin to restore something valuable.

A meaningful life is not measured by how visible it is, but by how fully it is lived. The challenge is not choosing between online and offline, but learning how to remain present in both. As William James wrote, “My experience is what I agree to attend to.”

The next time your attention drifts, catch yourself. Keep doing it, and you may begin to notice how much fuller life feels when you are actually in it.
