I live for sunshine; I am solar powered. Just a little of it peeking through my curtains will snap me awake. The days in July are the longest of the year, giving us more time to GO & DO and look great doing it. Our Go/Do issue needs your human involvement to maximize its effectiveness. This is not a sit-in-a-lawn-chair issue. This magazine does not sleep in until noon. It is filled to the brim with OC style and beauty and we need you to be making your best selfie face while reading it. Making THE ISSUE

Working with Balboa Bay Resort, we were able to work on a stunning 128-foot yacht, ‘The Ambassador’, in the marina. We aimed to highlight the glamour of the location and beauty of the girls with our stunning “set.” We can all attest to the “Endless Summer” we experience in Southern California, and the Tone It Up girls gave us the motivation we needed to remain beach-ready all year long. Founders of Tone It Up, Katrina Scott and Karena Dawn made making this issue a total blast! Photographer Bradley Blackburn used a Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 Lens. To control the light, he used a ¾-stop Scrim and a few reflectors. The photos turned out beautifully and Bradley had a great time working with the girls. With great equipment, a creative vision and a beautiful backdrop, he had the recipe for success. Hair Stylist Bri Orozco wanted to keep (the hair) very organic and full of texture to go with our location. She opted for a 1 1/4 in iron by bio ionic to give the girls beach waves by wrapping the sections in different directions and taking different sizes allows a tousled look. The style was completed by using Spray À Porter by Kérastase to give it that sea sprayed effect and Redken Windblown to really give it an airy finish. Wardrobe Stylist Carlye Sandoval wanted to be sure to show off their great athletic figures with designer swimwear, while incorporating some casual yacht attire to stick with the theme. She tried to keep it clean with simple patterns and bright colors and by adding light jewelry pieces to complement each look, rather than over-power. “In this shoot, less was more and it was all about staying focused on the girls’ natural beauty and not going over-the-top glam,” Carlye says. Jenna Anton for Giorgio Armani Beauty took “Nautical Sun Kissed Goddesses” as her inspiration for the shoot, and chose to “(highlight) their natural beauty with an ode to the sixties—bronzed skin, flirty lashes, and baby doll lips.”

Ò To get past those middle of the week blues, I hop into a go-kart at K1 Speed in Irvine. Nothing beats racing on the track with your friends or family for bragging rights. Nothing says love like beating your mom by five laps (just kidding, mom).

Ò Staying active is important. I like to visit The Dunes and hop on a paddleboard with Pirate Coast Paddle Company. Sun is out and the water is glassy. Perfect for a little workout and getting out of the house.

Ò Once I get work out of the way, getting together with pals for an early happy hour is usually in the cards. Mozambique in Laguna is still my alltime favorite with unique and inexpensive happy hour bites and wine and cocktails with a South African flair. Early is key, I try to get a good night’s sleep heading into the weekends which are quite busy in the studios.

Ò Mondays are actually our busiest days in the studios, so I do my best coming off of the weekend to set myself up for success. I always start my day with lemon and vinegar water to hydrate and reset before having my morning coffee, typically from Sapphire Pantry in Laguna Beach. www.sapphirellc.com

Ò Mid-week is my heaviest, mundane, administrative work time, but I always prioritize a sweat sesh—totally nonnegotiable. I’m blessed in that I can jump into one of our mid-morning hot yoga classes in our Newport location, have a quick shower and be back at my desk in a flash. Ò On Tuesdays I work out of our Laguna Beach location, and try to keep the work day as short as possible, as I work all weekend. So I sometimes find myself making a break for it and dashing across the street to the Surf & Sand for a couple of hours of pretending to be a tourist poolside.

Ò By this time in the week I’m checking the calendar for the upcoming weekend—we do a lot of fun social events at the Mariner’s Point Plaza where our Newport studio is located. Ò I'm back at the factory checking on production and shaping boards. Then for lunch I go over to Bear Flag for a bowl of Poke or Poke Burrito before running out for an afternoon surf in Newport. www.bearflagfishco.com

Ò Friday morning I'm in the office for our weekly Sympl Supply Co. meeting with our sales and marketing team. For lunch I’m back at Pie Not, then run out front of my house in Newport for a quick swim before heading to the Wayfarer to kick off the weekend.

Ò Monday mornings you can usually find me surfing one of the jetties in Newport. Then I head up to the factory to check on production and shape a few boards. At lunch I might head over to Outpost Kitchen on Monrovia; they have the best coffee and an epic lunch menu.

Ò Tuesday morning I'm usually back out for a surf. Then I'll head over to my showroom to check on inventory and work on my new surf accessory line, Sympl Supply Co. For lunch I stop by my mate’s Aussie style pie shop Pie Not on 17th. They make the best meat pies in the Northern Hemisphere, especially the Drunken Cow Pie. www.symplsupplyco.com

Ò I try to go up to LA and work on board designs for new models with one of my main team riders Travis Logie. We usually go for a surf in the South Bay and test a few new shapes that we've been working on. 40 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

Ò I'll go south and find some uncrowded waves, bring some funky alternative-shaped boards and test them out on different types of waves that I find. And Saturday night, I'll get together with the boys and go to our good friend Chase Wilson's house “The Byrds Nest” in LA to get rowdy before heading to the Bungalow in Santa Monica.

We usually go for a surf in the South Bay and test a few new shapes that we've been working on.

Ò I'm usually spending the first half of the day down at the beach in Newport with my girlfriend, Erica, and my French Bulldog, Astro. For lunch I'll swing by Bear Flag in Newport to grab a Poke Burrito and then I'll spend the second half of the day shaping boards and working on new board designs at the factory.

HAILING FROM SHANGHAI, CHINA, FENNY YAN IS NO STRANGER TO THE DONUT INDUSTRY. Owning a Donut Star in Dana Point—which caters to traditional donuts—Yan has taken this favorite sweet to a new level with her charming build-your-own shop in Irvine called Poqet [pronounced “pocket”] Donuts. A mom and a businesswoman, she is constantly busy, but keeps trekking on because she is passionate about what she does. Fenny Yan has made a name for herself in OC with a shop that allows not only her creativity, but also the creativity of her customers.

Q: POQET IS SUCH AN INTERESTING CONCEPT. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF A BUILD YOUR OWN DONUT SHOP? Fenny Yan: I just wanted to do customization for donuts. All kinds of foods can be customized nowadays—like burritos and pizza—and I wanted to bring that to donuts.

NATIVE KNOWLEDGE: Poqet is especially busy on Friday and Saturday, selling at least 1,000 donuts each day.

PERSONAL BEST: Fenny cites passion and determination as the keys to her success.

BY DESIGN: If Fenny Yan was not in the bakery business, she would love to be involved in the fashion industry.

Q: Operating a business sounds difficult. How do you keep it running smoothly and effectively? FY: Running your own business, things are nonstop. I take time to work things out. I balance my time and focus energy on it. Q: When creating a menu, how do you brainstorm ideas? FY: Some ideas come from our pastry chef; some ideas are from me. I like to taste different flavor combinations and foods [for inspiration]. Q: Does the menu ever go through changes? How often? FY: Yes. We change the menu every month. We add and take away at least one flavor per month. Q: Is there a certain set of instructions when it comes to building a donut? FY: Yes. 1. Choose either cake or raised donut. 2. Choose your filling. 3. Choose your toppings.

Q: I bet there are some people who don’t want to take the time to build their own donut. Is there a best seller for those who don’t? FY: The glazed donut. They don’t want to spend more time to put the toppings on. Some people just like the traditional donuts. Q: What are some weird combinations your customers have used? FY: It’s been pretty normal. All the ingredients go well together because they’re fresh and sweet, so nothing’s weird. Q: What is the best thing about running your shop? FY: I can meet a lot of new friends here. I love meeting new people. Q: What are your dreams for the future? FY: I want to open more locations for Poqet. I’m looking to open more in Orange County.

Chef Brian Huskey was one of the top five finalists for Top Chef, Season 11. He’s from

Pasadena and has a background in economics. After graduating from UCLA, he decided to dive into the culinary field after working as a short order cook in LA. He earned a

degree at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and climbed his way up the culinary ladder to stardom. fter being featured on Top Chef, he received multiple offers to become the executive chef at many high-end restaurants. Since then, he has worked as Chef de Cuisine of LA Prime at the Westin Bonaventure, Executive Chef for Room Forty, and has also helped start up three new restaurants: Picca, Mo-Chica and Paiche. He now has his own restaurant called Tackle Box, just off the coast of Corona Del Mar. Brian Huskey’s interest in cooking began at a very young age when he used to travel with his parents. As a kid, Huskey felt blessed to have been able to visit Asia, South 62 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

America and Europe, which opened up his view of the world and sparked his interest in food. “Food is a great vehicle to connect with people,” he says, and that became his source of inspiration. Here in Orange County, Tackle Box has been open for about a year. The concept behind it is being able to serve food of the same quality as what you would have at a finedining restaurant, but at a much more reasonable price. “Anyone can create a great experience with lobster and caviar, but can you do that for everyday products like chicken and salmon? That’s the idea. My concept is to change the perception of what $20 can

get you. Here at Tackle Box, you can get a fresh sandwich, house made chips and a drink all for a reasonable price.” There are many popular dishes at Tackle Box, and about a dozen in-house sauces that go with their designated dishes, like the salmon poke, buffalo cauliflower, cheesesteak and lobster roll. Huskey’s secret ingredient? “I put a lot of love in all them,” he says with a laugh. “To work in this industry, it’s very hard. There are a lot of long hours. But in general, life isn’t easy. It’s a struggle, but it makes it that much more special. The key is being humble, working hard and being patient.”

A local favorite has returned to Laguna Beach. The Royal Hawaiian has a long history in the area, 65 years to be exact. Family owned until around 2006, The Royal Hawaiian was known for its tiki room vibe and famous Mai Tai style drink called the Lapu Lapu.

With over 600 different types of wine to select from and 7,500 bottles on the premises, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more diverse selection of wine in Orange County than The Winery. With the original location in Tustin at The District and another in Newport Beach, The Winery has come a long way in nine years. They have 12 sommeliers between the two locations, and 10 of them are employees who earned their credentials while working there. “[For] anyone of our employees pursuing their sommelier certificates, if they pass, we pay for it,” says Founder and Managing Partner JC Clow. The establishment has received countless awards including Restaurant of the Year, Best Wine List, Chef of the Year and Sommelier of the Year, to name a few.

Even if you’re a not a wine aficionado, no need to be intimidated, as Wine Director/ Sommelier Rafael Hernandez Jr. put it, “At the end of the day it’s just grape juice.” Jokes aside, the restaurant takes great pride in their selection of wine, offering a range for any and everyone. Feeling extra special? They even offer an $8,500 vintage 1982 bottle from Chateau Petrus. Hernandez has a passion as a sommelier that helps customers better understand all that goes into each bottle. “There’s so much life in [the bottle],” Hernandez says. “It's not [necessarily] about how much I know, it is about how well I can translate that to something you may like.” With over 600 bottles to choose from, we might be here a while.

If you’re envisioning these two, now, power-house besties as toddlers playing together with two-pound dumbbells in the same backyard, you’d be sorely mistaken. While both of these wellness-wonders fell in love with fitness at a young age (Karena was doing half marathons with her dad by the 6th grade, while Katrina was turning her basement into a home gym as a youth with the help of her father), it wasn’t until a bit later in life that they met organically after both making a move to Manhattan Beach. Oh, this you might have expected... they met in a gym. The girls became fast friends and after discovering their commonalities and shared fit-vision, they moved in together and began creating the now larger-than-life health brand, Tone It Up (TIU).

For the handful of you who aren’t entirely sure what TIU has to offer...it’s got everything. Workout routines (DVDs and free videos online), nutrition plans, healthy recipes (check-out their Perfect Fit line of protein, tea & more), fitness gear, activewear, beauty products, accessories, and, of course, beach babe bikinis! In addition to their innovative routines and fun merch, however, they’ve created something that is even more noteworthy and impactful: a community to participate in. The countless number of TIU meetup groups, fan pages, hashtags (i.e., #TIUmealprep, #TIU, #TIUteam, etc.), and success stories are a source of comfort and community for all of those working toward a common goal of health. The TIU community allows you to work, not alone, but together with a group of likeminded individuals who are there to support you every step of the way. So, what exactly is this fine-toning phenomenon that Karena and Katrina created? “Our finetoning method works with the science of a woman’s body and targets what is actually going to boost your metabolism,” Katrina says. “What we do is work the big muscle groups first and then shift into smaller movements to target the entire body part or area. For example, when working on abdominals, we incorporate three movements to work the entire waistline (i.e.,upper abs, lower abs and lower back) in order to work the core from all angles and hit each muscle group individually. Also, we know women are often short on time and we want to make everything as efficient and targeted as possible.”

While we had the experts on hand, you know we asked them to dish about summer fit-tips and the best ways to stay sculpted this season. What did these beach babes prescribe? Social fitness! K & K encourage us to avoid the mindset of going to the gym, busting out a workout, and being done with it. “Call your girlfriends, get together and make a date of it! You can go to a class and then afterwards get a juice or breakfast...or go on a hike followed by happy hour,” Karena says. You’re probably thinking that there’s no way these bikini babes have an actual life outside of fitness. Well, we’ve got news for you...Karena is about to say ‘I do’ to her soon-to-be husband, and Katrina and her hubby (along with their Cavalier King Charles puppy, Winston..aww) are in the process of renovating and decorating their home. How in the world do these two manage the worklife balancing act? “You just do it!” Katrina says. “It’s a struggle and we continue to work on it, but it’s just like a workout...you make the decision to make the time, just like we set aside time to go to dinner with each other and be girlfriends.” We can relate to that! Personal lives aside, we all want to know what’s on the horizon for Tone It Up! K-squared summed their grand vision up best: “We want to make sure that every girl out there has the opportunity to join the community, because every girl deserves to feel like she has a whole group of cheerleaders cheering her on, celebrating her, lifting her up, and encouraging her to go after her dreams.”

Lindsey Lamoureux, co-owner of West of Camden, tells us more about what’s in store for the boutique. Q: Describe your brand in a snapshot for our readers. Lindsey Lamoureux: We are a collection of clothing, art, and design. Our original store is located in Corona Del Mar and we just recently opened a second location in Pacific City. We are really into art, music, food and local products, and we like to support as many local vendors as we can in our store. Any larger-brand items in house are hand-picked by us as well. Among our favorite brands are Obey, LOVE NAIL TREE, Howe, good hYOUman, Chaser and Nothing & Company. Q: What inspired you to open a store? LL: The store was opened by my husband and I in 2012. Though I’ve been on several sides of the fashion industry through the years, I never thought I’d end up owning a store—it just happened organically. I was a fit model for many years and that gave me the opportunity to mingle with buyers, designers, and merchandisers—basically,

anyone and everyone behind the scenes of making clothing. After studying fashion merchandising in college and working as an assistant buyer, I eventually decided to branch out on my own. My husband, Adrien, was a graphic designer so we combined our skill sets and started out with a kiosk at Fashion Island before settling into our store location in Corona Del Mar. Q: Take us on a style journey through West of Camden. LL: All of our clothes exude an easy vibe with a dollop of edge. You can always expect to find a lot of art and musicthemed prints on apparel in our store as well. No matter the season, we’re all about keeping it casual with a combination of beach and street vibes! Q: Discuss some dos and don’ts for style this summer! LL: Perhaps to the dismay of some of your readers, West of Camden is not largely based in the boho vibe that seems to be trending. We don’t subscribe to a ton of lace, bell bottoms,

or flowers in your hair. Rather, a nice quality rock or artistinspired tank, paired with shorts or boyfriend jeans and a great shift dress for evening dinners is definitely on our DO list. Q: What are some of the latest and upcoming trends at West of Camden? LL: We’re big fans of unique verbiage prints, screen prints and embroidery. We’ve been seeing a lot of smaller, pocket-sized embroidery bits popping up on some of our favorite brands. Many of our newer items have interesting surprises like screen prints on the inside, as opposed to outside, of clothing too. Q: Tell us about summer sporty activewear found at West of Camden! LL: Our favorite activewear pieces are created by good hYOUman. We’re on our third re-order of their muscle tees! They make great pieces that perfectly crossover from working out to lunch or brunch. Also, their items are so soft!

AS MISS CALIFORNIA USA 2015, last summer I got to represent my beautiful home state at the Miss USA pageant where I met 50 other women from across the country with one common goal of taking home the national crown. When I walk in their big red doors and see their picket white fence surrounding the beach view deck, I get Hampton vibes that pair perfectly with their ocean to table dining ambiance. I have a confession to make though, up until visiting Ways & Means, I’ve never successfully enjoyed a good oyster! The display of oysters on the bed of ice was too beautiful for me to resist, so I grabbed my lemon wedge and bottoms up! t’s not everyday you meet a beauty blogger whose hair color changes with the seasons. Oh, and when we say hair color, we’re talking way outside the brown-blonde-black hued box. OC-based fashion and beauty blogger Lina Assayed gives us a glimpse inside her colorful world and invited us to see things through her unique lens. This vintage-shop-aholic and haircare connoisseur continues to dazzle her readers with her inner and outer beauty, and we are stoked to discover some of her soughtafter tricks of the hair-trade.

Q: How did you enter into the world of blogging and social media? Lina Assayed: I’ve been into fashion since middle school and dreamt of going to FIDM. I used to draw up designs and create my own fashion. At that time, social media wasn’t a big thing so I never thought about blogging back then, but I’ve always been fashion driven. I took a few years off after high school before deciding I really wanted to go to FIDM. During college, people always asked me where I got my clothes and where my stuff was from—that’s when I decided to blog! I began blogging in 2013 just for fun without realizing you can make a career out of it! Q: Your hair and makeup looks amazing! Starting with makeup, can you share some of your trusty tips? LA: Believe it or not I never used to be one to use a lot of makeup. All I used through high school was mascara! It wasn’t until college that I started seeing girls with false lashes and perfect eyebrows that I thought, “I wanna do that!” My mom is super creative and she helped and encouraged me to selfteach. We sat down and looked at pictures and videos of makeup application and techniques and learned how to do it ourselves. Q: How about some hair tips for our readers? How do you keep your hair so healthy and strong even through all the fun color changes? LA: [Laughs] Even my hairstylist

is surprised that my hair hasn’t fallen out because we bleached it so many times! Stylists at my salon say, “How are you not bald yet?” My favorite product is coconut oil! I apply coconut oil to my ends and roots daily to keep them moisturized and wash my hair every 5-7 days. I keep a whole jar of coconut oil handy for multiple uses! For instance, I use it to take off my makeup—it works great for removing waterproof makeup minus the chemicals! Q: Where do you get inspiration for coloring your hair? LA: It’s so crazy because I had box-dyed black hair for the longest time and I didn’t even think it was possible to go lighter! My natural color is dark brown but I wanted something that would stand out. For some reason I feel more natural with colored hair! I’ve gone from grey to blue to green to yellow and now when I look back I feel like I look so weird without colorful hair. I love neon colors at the moment. Next I’m thinking I’ll go neon or “Khaleesi white.” Q: What are your goals as a style blogger? LA: I really didn’t expect to see myself where I am now in terms of blogging. That said, I do want to expand my blog more into the lifestyle realm. For instance, I’m a vegetarian and I enjoy doing yoga, etc., and I’d like to share those aspects of my life with my audience. I want others to get to know that side of me as well.

Q: Will you tell us a little about Pure Barre and the physical ability it requires? Monica Pommier Grubin: Pure barre is a type of workout you can do almost every day. It is optimal for weight loss and building strength, and it’s a combination of strength training and highintensity interval training (HIIT), which is why you see fast results. Yet it’s still nice and easy on the joints deriving from how dancers are trained. Our teachers can work with any shape, size, weight, issue, and any injury. You can even do it during pregnancy, so it’s very user friendly. It gives you great results without causing more pressure or damage to pre-existing injuries or your joints. Q: What sparked your interest in barre workouts? MPG: I played college water polo, in addition to high school soccer swimming, and field hockey. We always did high intensity cardio workouts, so I was strong, but bulky. The idea of leaning my muscles and still getting this great workout was something foreign to me, so the first time I tried it, it was very hard. I was completely inflexible. But once I let myself learn the technique and stick to taking a few classes, my body completely changed. I was eventually able to do the splits. It was a great workout for getting a strong but non-bulky body. In addition to that, I also worked in orthopedics. My focus was total joint replacements, so doing research on how much impact people put on their

joints, I was looking for something that would protect mine in the long run. Q: What were some initial challenges you faced at Pure Barre or with the ballet barre in general? MPG: For me, I wasn’t flexible. So it took a little bit for me to get flexible. I’m not good at letting myself be a beginner, so I really had to work to stay with it to see the results. Once you see the results though, you definitely feel like you want to keep going. I have been taking classes for over eight years now and try for four to five times a week. When I do that I am most happy with my body. My posture is better, my mind is more clear and I feel strong. Q: Who or what inspires you to stick to this kind of lifestyle? MPG: My clients and my staff are amazing. I love going into the studio every day. When [I’m] working out in a studio, [I] receive positive energy from the people around me. The instructors are highly motivational as well. They push you. That’s what they’re there to do. You have to keep challenging yourself to get stronger, but the instructor helps to make it easier to take your workout to the next level. Q: Can you describe the Pure Barre community? MPG: Everything we do in the studio is positive. Our cues, the way we run the class, we keep all negativity outside the front door. Our culture is very uplifting; we strive to help empower clients to reach their fitness goals, whatever it may be.

Q: What are some of your personal fitness goals? MPG: I want to take classes more often. I think the biggest myth of people owning a fitness studio is that you get to work out every day, but most of the time you’re running around making sure everyone else can work out. So making a little more time for myself to take classes would be nice. I’m at each location multiple times a week and I’m familiar with everyone. I only teach in one location (Newport Beach), and that gives me the freedom to move around. Q: If any, what kind of diet would you recommend that complements the barre workout routine? MPG: I don’t believe in diets. I believe in full lifestyle changes. To get the best results with barre, I typically eat protein right after the class. This helps to fend off hunger and also give my body what it needs to repair the muscles I just worked. I try to only eat when I am hungry. I think that is the trick. If you listen to your body it will let you know what it needs. I try to start off the day healthy with protein shakes, yogurts and berries. Lunch just depends if I’m on the road, and sometimes I’ll just grab something. Every one of our stores is next to a Nekter which is nice. I’ll just grab a juice depending on the day. Salads and sandwiches are always a "go-to" as well. Dinner is like a free for all. I just try to stay healthy throughout the day, but for dinner my family loves to cook…so we cook and eat healthy of course, but we enjoy ourselves.

Q: How long did it take for you to stabilize your company, and what were some of your initial struggles? Shannon McLaren Wilkins: Since launching, we have been successful due to the booming real estate market in SoCal. Some of our struggles have been keeping up with demands because inventory is always coming in and out. Q: What visions and future plans do you have for your company within the next five years? SW: We launched a remodel/interior design aspect of our business a few months ago. It’s going really well and I love working with clients on their personal homes. I would love to continue that aspect. It’s also always possible that we open up a home store in Newport. That’s just dreaming though. I can only imagine our warehouse and inventory will keep growing with the staging side as well. Q: What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into the same field as you? SW: Do it! I started with one house at a time. Q: What is something you learned on the road to becoming an entrepreneur? SW: Good news travels fast. If it’s going to work and catch on, it is usually a quick positive response. Grow funding as needed, and don't invest money when you're not forced to. We started in my garage, then got a storage unit, then a smaller warehouse and now we are in an even larger warehouse.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? SW: It’s a new project every few days, which can be chaotic for some, but I love the design challenge and the ‘before and after’ satisfaction. Q: What are some of your biggest challenges when designing a particular room? SW: In staging, sometimes we need to furnish homes that are NOT updated, which helps mask some of the design flaws, however it is less inspiring. Q: Where do you get your inspiration? SW: I get my inspiration from design magazines, flea markets, Instagram and the black hole that is Pinterest. I look internationally in Australia, London and New York as well. I always take what I find abroad and add elements that make it feel more Californian. Australia seems to have that laid-back design nailed! Q: Can you explain your process when redesigning a home? SW: I’m all about the flow. I start at the front door and walk the whole house. I take on a weird intuition feeling on how the house should move. If something feels wrong, I fix it. Then I focus on the exterior of the home and ask myself ‘What style is it?’ Then I take the vibe of the house in consideration when selecting materials to update it.

Q: Will you tell us a bit about your delicious chocolate? Amy Jo Pedone: It’s an Italian inspired artisan confections company. We use old family pastry recipes converted to different ganache flavors, as well as doing traditional chocolate pieces. I use the purest single bean origin out of Venezuela. I don’t use any additives or preservatives, so everything is made fresh. Q: Tell us about your transition from working in the corporate real estate industry to becoming a chocolatier. AP: I was in commercial real estate lending for 14 years. Then I left to help my cousin who was battling ovarian cancer. She left me with this amazing gift of really stepping back and thinking, “If I had to do it all over again, what would be my true passion? What is the job that I want to do?” You can’t live with regret. Although I loved what I was doing on my corporate side, I wasn’t getting out of it what I was putting into it. I basically did this soul searching of figuring out what my passion was. Fortunately, I was able to transition my diligence from my prior job into researching what I needed to do to start my chocolate company. Q: What does a typical day as a chocolatier look like for you? AP: I start my mornings at 3 a.m. and I work from 4 to 9 a.m. Primarily because I don’t have my own kitchen

yet and because I work out of a shared commercial kitchen, I have to deal with climate control. I have to have the kitchen between 67-69 degrees Fahrenheit for tempering chocolate. As a small business owner, it then leaves me the afternoons to deal with other aspects of business. Morning is all production. The afternoon is for PR, branding, social media, delivery, all of those functions of running a small business. Q: What was something you learned during your time in Italy while completing your Ecole Chocolat Master Chocolatier Certification? AP: I chose the Italy program clearly because it ties to my branding. We learned traditional pieces from the region that we were in, which was Piedmont in Northern Italy. They’re known for their hazelnuts. It dates back to the Napoleonic Era. They wanted to make chocolate last longer so they took hazelnut and mixed it into the chocolate. And since then, that’s turned into Nutella. And now it’s a sought after Italian chocolate. I brought it back to the states and made it in the traditional form, and I still get my hazelnuts from that region. Q: Where do you get your inspiration? AP: The whole genesis really stems from three women: My cousin Sheri, my mother and grandmother—[they] have had a lot to do with shaping my life and the value of the traditions that I carry on. Being a chocolatier is very challenging and it’s a lot of hard work. That work ethic is something


that all three of those women have had, which has transferred into me. What also keeps me going are my customers. I am so humbly gracious for their support. Because business has grown organically, it’s almost like they feel my success with me. Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge in your career? AP: I think for me personally, it’s overcoming my stages of fear when I have a small business. I went from a corporate career where life goes paid every night and you have that infrastructure. When you launch a new business, each level of the business creates different uncomfortable hurdles. The next hurdle is finding a permanent base and knowing where I’m taking this. It’s overcoming [my] selfdoubt. This goes back to what my customers have really done for me and being my sidelinecheerleaders to seeing how this business evolves. Q: What is the best piece of advice you can give to another budding chocolatier? AP: Be authentic to yourself. Are you going to be a trend follower or do you have something that’s specific to you? How does that differentiate you? For example, I’m not going to do bacon chocolate and I’m not going to do tea-infused because I stick with my authentic brand which is Italian inspired chocolate. I have my own niche, and it represents my culture and traditions. It’s really important that your authenticity is going to show through in your collection.

Italian Roots: Amy Jo is half Sicilian, and growing up, her and her mother always made Italian cookies together. She started the nonprofit organization, Working Wardrobes, after realizing that many individuals and victims of substance abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, and traumatic financial loss need help with restructuring their professional image and getting back into the workforce.

Q: Can you tell us about the mission statement of Working Wardrobes? Jerri Rosen: Our mission statement is to do everything in our power to help our men, women, young adults, and veterans get back on their feet and back to work with dignity. We do that in a variety of different ways. We have staff who are working diligently with clients to do assessments to develop individual employment plans, to provide hard and soft skills training and to help them with interviewing techniques, resumes and pulling together the right questions and answers for interviews. Q: What inspired you to start the organization? JR: Originally we were working with survivors of domestic violence. That’s an audience of people that truly does need a boost to their self-esteem. But after working with them, we realized that there were more issues that they were dealing with, so we expanded over 26 years to do much more for many many clients, adding services for men, young adults and veterans as well. Q: What are some of the biggest flaws in the way our working society is structured? JR: I do think that people need to, early on, probably even in high school, get much more information about financial planning and how they can develop a financial health in their lives. I think

that’s basic information for everyone. I think that because our audiences are so diverse, people are coming with different sets of issues. But at the end of the day everyone is dealing with this need to rebuild their dignity, self-confidence, their sense of who they are and to communicate their skill set in a very positive and powerful way to an employer. Q: You’ve made some outstandingly positive impacts on the community, but how has Working Wardrobes impacted you as a person? JR: I think it’s changed me in any number of different ways. This has been very powerful work for me to see evolve over the years. Everyone is touched when we can help an individual, so I think for me, my sense of compassion for the issues that are happening to our clients, makes me very much more aware of what people go through on a daily basis. I think I’ve become less patient with people who are blasé about what’s going on in the world, and I’ve become much more of a social activist over the years. I would love to think that people have the sense to do something to help whoever is next to us. Everyone can become a philanthropist and volunteer to help the community in some way. Q: What are some of Working Wardrobes’ biggest achievements? JR: We now have seven chains of resale (thrift and outlet) stores that contribute revenue to help


translate to helping more clients. Being able to serve now over 5,000 clients every year, is an enormous effort. The first year we started with 67 women, so there is massive growth in that area. We also have our own army of volunteers to work with us in some shape or form every year. It’s an opportunity to give back and to make an impact on the clients we’re serving. Q: Can you explain the Working Wardrobes process as to how you work with each individual? JR: Each client goes through a series of assessments with our case manager, and an individual employment plan is put together for the client. That can look very different depending on the circumstances. In some instances, the client may need a very broad array of our services. Others are just here to get a professional outfit together for an interview. We want to provide a range of services, but the individual employment plan is critical. We need to know where they are and what they need so that we can make whatever they want happen for them. Q: Who or what inspires you to continue your work? JR: For me, what’s inspiring is always the clients that have gotten back on their feet. They’ve worked so hard to make their transition back into success. I never tire of listening to them and celebrating with them. They inspire me on a daily basis.

She started Miracles for Kids to help families meet the basic needs of their children. The organization helps cover anything from financial aid to housing and other essential needs. With such a caring and humble sense of duty, Autumn has helped change the lives of hundreds of families.

Q: Can you tell us a little about Miracles for Kids? Autumn Strier: Miracles for Kids began in 2004 and we are a nonprofit that provides aid to low income families with critically ill children. There were no solutions for families who had children battling life threatening illnesses. Miracles for Kids began as a solution that provided a community, resources, access to support their family, and also to take care of their children for treatment. We provide very simple ways to remain stable for children to have access to food and other basic needs. Q: What got you interested in your career path today? AS: I was on the receiving side of charity as a child. I moved around a lot and I was also in need of everyday health. I received support from various individuals who reached out. As I grew up I knew that my calling was to help others. Now, I’ve been a volunteer in management of a nonprofit for over 25 years. Q: How has your experience with Miracles for Kids changed you as a person? AS: I really don’t think of this as a job. It gives me perspective, reminds me of the value of health and family and to cherish the things that we have. So it’s taught me a great deal and I’m honored to know the families and spend time with them and to call many of them my friends. Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve experienced so far? AS: One of the biggest challenges is having a greater demand for our support than our resources allow.

We have a waiting lists at all three partner hospitals and their child’s illness could last for days, weeks, months, a year. That is very devastating for a family. Our greatest challenge is to raise enough funds and secure enough support and resources to continue to serve these families while they’re in need of our help. Q: What or who inspires you to continue your work? AS: The families continue to inspire me through days that are very hard in a non profit business. We rely on the generosity of others and the support of large community, and we deal with families and their children with life threatening illnesses. We can’t change trajectory or make immediate improvements. All we can do is make their lives as stable as possible and it’s challenging because they have such great needs. Their basic needs. They need gas, food, shelter, but we have on any given day over 250 families to provide a solution for. And that is a challenge in itself, to introduce our organizations to those who need our services, and to have the ability to reach out. Q: Can you tell us an inspiring story about a miracle you helped create? AS: We have what we call Miracle Manor, the first housing solution for families at risk for homelessness because of their child’s illness. The most inspiring thing I do every day, is making Miracle Manor come to life. It’s the result of a year and half of renovations and support of over eightyfive companies who helped renovate a twelve-unit


apartment complex into a beautiful sanctuary. We have hundreds of volunteers helping us with building furniture, fences, and painting. It’s a great place for families to come together to support each other. It’s all just incredibly inspired. Q: What is your favorite part of your job? AS: Meeting the children and spending time with their families. It reminds [me] how every day is a gift. They’re incredible; their laughter and how they believe that all things are possible, how they’re not weighed down by their circumstances. It’s an incredible thing to witness. Q: What are some ways Miracles for Kids reaches out to the community? AS: We have several volunteer opportunities every month. We partner with community organizations, and clubs in eleven different elementary and high schools. We give the children the opportunity to meet the families. We do a number of fundraisers, golf and tennis tournaments, fishing tournaments, music festivals, and we partner with some organizations, spend time in the community, raise awareness, and have new conversations with people who might be interested in helping. Q: What future goals do you have for Miracles for Kids? AS: It’s very simple. We want to raise additional funds and increase our resources in order to meet the needs of families whom we cannot yet serve.

Growing up in the 70’s, ECO-Warrior Founder James Pribram knew Laguna Beach to be “just a down to earth, blue collar town.” The vast expanse of the Pacific was just outside Pribram’s window and it beckoned every part of his soul to love the sea unconditionally. The smitten Pribram, in turn, took to aquatic activities quite naturally, developing some powerful chops in the sea—like fish to water.

“I remember being mesmerized by the ocean as a boy. It’s always spoke to me in different ways. To this day, I can sit there and stare at it for hours. The ocean runs in my veins.”

The ocean’s majestic beauty and vibrant shades of blue never got old for Pribram. His surfing skills rapidly advanced him to pro-surfer status with companies like Billabong and O’Neill as major sponsors.

O

n the pro-surfing circuit, Pribram traveled around the world to compete over two decades, developing an even greater understanding of waves, tides, safety and surfing etiquette. Everywhere he went on his surfing circuit, he brought that cultivated environmental awareness. “I grew up in a collective community and we were taught at a very early age to give back,” he says. “And because Laguna had a lot of well-known activists like James Dilley and the march for the Laguna Canyon road, there were a lot of unique people here so it was just part of our culture to pick up a piece of trash if you saw it on the sand.” In all his travels and noble gestures, nothing had prepared Pribram for the life changer he experienced in 1993, however, when he encountered a pileup of trash debris on the side of Tahiti while filming a part of the “Hot Summer Nights” series for ESPN. “I couldn’t believe the collection of trash in what I had believed were the world’s most pristine waters. It had collected because of the wind and surf coming together there and this is actually what creates gyres around the world. There are five massive gyres building now because of the currents and winds in those areas.” Ocean trash is indeed a modern-day sea monster. Disposable plastics— packaging, cosmetics, drinking straws, cigarette butts, and fishing nets—many designed to be used only once—are discarded as litter, filtering into streams and gullies that feed into our oceans, rivers and lakes, where it destroys aquatic habitats. When Pribram shifted gears, dipping into the waters of ocean preservation, he did it with conviction. And, as an environmental ambassador in troubled water spots around the world, he was not afraid to look danger in the eye. As part of a research team, he set sail on a perilous journey through treacherous

waters from Brazil to Cape Town to study the South Atlantic Gyre, or waste stream. He endured a 5-day, roughly 110-nautical mile stand up paddle board trek from Pearl Street in Laguna Beach to Mission Beach in San Diego. He has served on Laguna Beach’s Water Quality and Environmental Committees. Pribram also co-founded an organization called They Will Surf Again, which raised money to help those who have suffered ocean-related spinal injuries. He won the John Kelly Environmental Award and received the 2011 Laguna Beach Patriots Day Athlete of the Year Award. That same year, he was hailed a hero for rescuing a woman from drowning. The extent of plastic’s impact is enormous. Today, plastics are found in every ocean and waterway on the planet. Particle plastics are consumed by fish, turtles and even whales and are responsible for killing more than 100,000 marine animals a year from ingestion and entanglement. Pribram decided to take ownership of this plastic-wrap mess after a surfing sponsor, Ocean Pacific, sparked the idea for the ECO-Warrior Foundation, which Pribram initiated in 2006. The ECOWarrior Foundation’s goal is to help people work together to protect and preserve our oceans and beaches. Under the ECO-Warrior banner, Pribram organized beach cleanups and helped to increase awareness, conducting educational programs to curb plastics from entering into our streams or expanding our ocean debris locally. He also established the Aloha School of Surfing to concentrate his efforts on educating the next generations to be more ecologically involved. Despite these and loads of other accolades, the journey of Pribram’s devotion to the ocean would also be tested many times. “I’ve had a series of setbacks starting at the age of three. My health-related

picked up 641 pounds of trash. “That’s how much trouble our local environment is in,” says Pribram.

issues would include having two procedures for skin cancer (but still considered pre), surfing injuries that tore the muscles in my knee and a staph infection in 1997. I remember vividly the doctor telling me that had I not come in I could have died.” Pribram shares. “That was a second awakening for me. But, I’ve always been a fighter despite all the challenges and personal tragedies. It’s about never giving up.” Last year, his foundation hosted beach cleanups and Adopt-A-Beach programs in partnership with the California Coastal Commission’s California Coastal Cleanup Day. They finished out the year on a winning streak, with the first Upstream Cleanup Initiative—before the first rain fell on several different waterways in Laguna Niguel, picking up 551 pounds of trash. Working with a team of volunteers, the foundation removed approximately 3,000 pounds of debris headed for the ocean in 2015. “Since I started this journey, our foundation has prevented debris from contaminating our oceans and streams and we intend to keep that momentum going,” he says. “We need more corporate sponsors to help us succeed in the battle to protect and preserve our most valued asset for generations to come.” There is no time like the present to tackle the toxic waste flow. Water is one of the two essentials all life depends upon. Without it, we are doomed to exist. But, to put it in a more positive perspective, an entire ocean is affected by just one pebble so even one person making the smallest difference to reduce litter is a catalyst towards a major positive change. No experience necessary. Only action is required. Pribram’s work never stops: “You have to create opportunities for people to participate because it’s empowering when we all work together, and I think by doing so we can create a better world for everyone,” he says. “It’s simple. We’re not saving lives here. Anyone can pick up trash. Just walk down the beach.”

JASON PARILLO IS AN “OLD SCHOOL” BOXER.

Boxing is his heart and soul. He has spent nearly every day since he was 17 years old striving to perfect the art and science of boxing. MMA, on the other hand, combines all types of combat styles including jiu-jitsu, wrestling and, of course, boxing. Previously known as “No Holds Barred,” the official term MMA only began in the early 1990s. The rules can be summed up by two restrictions: No groin attacks and no eye attacks. Although MMA has countless origins, many roots of MMA can be traced to Orange County. In fact, at the beginning of MMA fighting, it would have been hard to find a fight card that did not include an OC local like Kimo Leopoldo, David “Tank” Abbott, or Tito Ortiz, who helped bring MMA to the mainstream audience. He’s coached big names like B.J. Penn and Danny Perez, and trained several champions of MMA, boxing and kickboxing. So, how does a professional boxer from Orange County, obsessed with the subtle science and intricacies of boxing, become one of the most successful MMA/Boxing coaches in the league?

Advice for aspiring fighters: “Make sure it’s the love of your life. If it’s not the love of your life, you should think about doing something else. It’s not something you can disrespect—you disrespect MMA it’s gonna disrespect you back; you disrespect boxing, it’s gonna disrespect you back. You gotta have a lot of respect for it and put it before everything in your life.” Native Knowledge: Parillo is an advocate for RVCA, who is his official gear provider. His gym is located in Orange County at the RVCA headquarters and he is open to training anyone who is willing to learn.

Had MMA been as credible as it is today when Parillo began, he may have competed himself. Parillo was well into his professional career and to him, compared to the science of boxing, MMA was sloppy. He would watch the fighters throw chaotic punches, likening it to “bar-room brawling.” Parillo started boxing at the age of 17 and started training beginners at 18. He had a gift, and his coach Jesse Reid aspired to send him to the Olympics. “For me, fighting was mine,” Parillo says. “I thought to myself, ‘All I care about is to be able to do that’.” It was a series of injuries that led Parillo to coaching. On his way to boxing stardom, Parillo had a record of 8-0. While sparring, he took a punch that eventually detached his left retina. Parillo took a two-year break and began to train others full time. On the very week he had a chance to restart professional fighting, his arm was snapped in a brawl at a nightclub, officially ending his professional career. Pat Tenore, founder of RVCA, and friend of Parillo, was sponsoring MMA fighter, B.J. Penn. Penn was up against Jens Pulver, a fighter known for his strong boxing, a skill Penn lacked. Tenore introduced the two and Parillo began coaching Penn on boxing. MMA was picking up popularity after being acquired by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As a boxer, Parillo could see the weaknesses in the fighters in the cage. He could feel where work needed to be done. Most of the attacks seen in MMA fights are

punches and, without proper boxing training, these attacks are usually sloppy. If a fighter masters the basics of boxing, it can be a powerful defensive and offensive tool. Penn defeated his opponent in two rounds, then went on to win NABC and IBC world titles. Penn’s boxing skills are still praised as some of the best techniques in MMA.

Parillo now pours his love for boxing into coaching other fighters. “It’s like osmosis,” he says. “I know how important it [is] to them and it’s important to me. That secondhand osmosis—it’s a feeling that you can’t get through money. You just get through understanding of what this kid’s been through, and what he’s sacrificed.” Parillo works alongside a fighter’s trainers who incorporate other styles of martial arts. Parillo’s coaching isn’t only technique however, he also deals with the mental aspect of fighting. “I try to get into their subconscious,” he says. “I build them in a positive way. And they feel that and they believe in it. And they know it to be true because they see it in the fight.” And it must pay off, because Parillo’s fighters trust him. They keep winning, and even if they don’t, they keep coming back; they keep fighting. Parillo serves as an example that hard work and a love of what you do can overpower obstacles, and it shows in his fighters when they overcome their next challenger.

Brooke’s husband Sam Jreisat (thenboyfriend) originally conceived and ran with the business concept for Beach City Sports. They both had moved here from different states, and Sam was very ambitious towards starting a business in California. He wanted to start a recreational company as a way for adults to meet each other, that shared his passion for fitness. She saw his dream and she jumped in with 100 percent of what she had to contribute... so within a few months it was clear he had a partner in crime to pull off the idea. And since they were both new to the area, Brooke and Sam actually met through playing adult social sports. “We jumped at the opportunity to build a company that brings adults together in an organized way for meeting people and making new friends,” Brooke says. “It makes a big difference to have friends and be surrounded by positive people. We’ve provided a new way to meet adults outside of the normal routine of work, school and church.” BCS has gained popularity since its inception in Huntington Beach in 2011. Two years later it expanded to Newport Beach and last year expanded to Long Beach. There are now roughly 1,500 adults registered to play coed beach sports every season. Beach Flag Football seems to be the crowd favorite at Beach City Sports, followed by Beach Volleyball, Beach Soccer, Bowling and Turf Flag Football. In fact, Brooke is part of the Football group and absolutely loves it. “All leagues are coed. Sometimes guys originally think they don’t want to play with girls, but it provides a whole new perspective afterwards,” Brooke says. While most who are part of BCS love to be active, there are more ways than playing a sport to be involved. “Beach City Social” and “Beach City Networking” are two expansions of the BCS

brand that provide social events and monthly networking events. With so many ways to meet others, you think there would be a membership fee associated with the league. Wrong! “We know that we could make more money by having a membershipbased business model,” Brooke says. “When I first moved to California I felt like Orange County was very exclusive, so we specifically built our company to be a non-exclusive environment. You can just register for whichever individual event you want to go to, no membership required. Even though we don’t have members, the players have coined the phrase #BCSFamily because teams and groups within the league quickly become a family of friends.” Everyone who plays in the league gets a Beach City VIP card; it’s a part of their business model that connects players with local businesses. Cruisers is one of their sponsored bars in Newport, within walking distance of the football and volleyball fields. All players get 25 percent off their food and drinks any day of the week there. “It has a big open-air patio with beer pong tables, corn hole, Jenga, and other games,” Brooke says. “It’s a really fun place to hang out after our sports events on Sundays, but is also open to us 7 days a week. I like to align myself with other business owners who have entrepreneurial outlooks in life. I always say I view the world from a perspective of collaboration rather than competition..” Long beach is the league’s first expansion into the LA market. “We have high aspirations for BCS, but we are taking it one step at a time,” Brooke says. “Our company's 5 Year Anniversary is coming up this August. Executive Director of Newport Dunes Resort and Marina, in partnership with Camp James Ò There isn’t a typical day at Camp James, that’s what makes it so unique and popular among all the other camps in Orange County. “It’s what I call a comprehensive schedule and calendar, meaning that if your child went on a Monday and a Wednesday for the entire camp season, they would never see the same day because they rotate the entertainment each of the five days, so they’re always evolving and revolving,” Thomas says. “For instance, there would be one week that the camp features the gokarts, there’ll be another week that it features the zip line, there’ll be another week where counsellors actually bring in characters and do plays—so that’s what keeps children entertained and excited to come each day because every day is different.” Scottie and Theresa come up with the variety of activities available to the children. These two ladies started Camp James over 27 years ago. The camp’s youngest age range is 5-6 years olds. And then they break them up into pods. Other groups with their roots in Orange County broke it down at Coachella in 2013, including the Mission Viejo-based Local Natives and Social Distortion, arguably one of Orange County's most impactful bands. The 2014 Coachella lineup featured Aloe Blacc, from Laguna Hills, who became famous for his single “Wake Me Up.”

Over the years, Orange County has kept a solid track record of sending its native bands to the Coachella Valley Art and Music Festival. album, Robbers and Cowards. The band members’ combination of independent rock and blues and lyrical sentimentality has earned them widespread appeal among both critics and fans of the contemporary rock scene.

Now it is 2016 and the tide of festival anticipation rises closer to our feet for next year. This year, one of SoCal’s most classic and influential punk groups, The Vandals served as an Orange Country emissary to Coachella along with the indie rock band Cold War Kids, whose well-earned fame and popularity has continually expanded since the release of their debut studio album, Robbers and Cowards, a decade ago.

Cold War Kids traces its influences back through The Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to Radiohead and Led Zeppelin, who served as inspiration for the members’ zealous live rock shows. Their renewal of classic blues sounds, reignited with contemporary soul and indie rock elements has advanced Cold War Kids from being a band loved by bloggers to becoming a soulful, spirited influence over indie rock— packing a serious enough punch to receive critical recognition and release charttopping tracks.

While traveling Budapest, bassist Matt Maust discovered a group of Communistera statues that had been laid to waste in a park. This image would inspire the name for one of Orange County’s most important new bands. In 2004, Cold War Kids was born in Fullerton, CA, where the band wrote and played songs at their guitarist’s apartment. Within two years of knocking out high-energy local shows and receiving props from an array of music bloggers, Cold War Kids signed with the record label Downtown/V2 and released its debut

The group released their fifth studio album, Hold My Home, with Downtown Records in October 2014. The album picked up some attention for “All This Could Be Yours,” “Hot Coals” and the anthemic clap-along hit “First.” Though the album’s overall reviews didn’t receive as much love as Robbers and Cowards, “First” held true to its title and became the band’s highest-ranking and longestcharting single to date, rising to number 1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and remaining on the chart for 62 weeks.

FEELING BUBBLY:

In March 2014, the Cold War Kids song “A Million Eyes” emerged from an experimental partnership with the band and Belgian beer company Stella Artois. Together with inventor Andy Cavatorta, who created instruments out of the company’s drinking glasses, the band’s sound merged with the Chalice Symphony to concoct a one-of-a-kind Stelladrinking soundtrack.

Saturday: DENIAL Saturday was a very busy day for me, and looking back, I’m so thankful it was. I had family visiting for the weekend and was preoccupied by the festivities, which made my first day tech-less pretty easy. I was able to engage with my family without being distracted by a notification on my lock screen. It felt good to be able to give everyone my full attention. By the end of the day, I was wiped out and couldn’t keep my eyes open long enough to even think about turning on Netflix. I rested my head on my pillow thinking how easily Saturday passed by and how great this experiment was going to be.

Sunday: ANGER We all know that there are these studies out there about how blue-light from cellphones and laptops ruin our sleep. Well, I’ve never really paid much attention to these findings because I fall asleep at the drop of a hat, whether I stare at a screen before bed or not. Waking up Sunday morning, I felt extra refreshed and ready to take on the day, so maybe it’s not all bologna. This joyous feeling, however, was soon hit by reality when I walked into the kitchen and my entire family was staring at their devices. It wasn’t unusual, as this is a practice that I normally participate in as well. I check all my social media in the morning, read a few popular articles and sort through emails.

t only took five measly days without my cellphone or laptop to show me that I’m addicted to technology.

I entered into this experiment thinking a week without electronics would be no problem. I can easily put my cellphone away during a dinner with family or friends. I love to be outside and I try not to stare at my computer screen all day. I’m honestly the type of person to make snarky comments about today’s youth and their social mediadriven lifestyles. However, I will admit that I watch a little too much Netflix and procrastinate doing work by endlessly scrolling on Twitter. I choose to do these things though, right? Wrong. Spending five days without any modern-day conveniences showed me that I’m addicted to these daily practices and it was really hard for me to give them up. Reflecting on my experience, I seemed to have went through the five stages of grief for the loss of my technology. I denied that the experiment was affecting my life. I was angry when others were using technology, while I couldn’t even check the time on my cellphone. I became depressed when I realized without social media, I had no idea what my friends were doing. Toward the end of the experiment, I began bargaining for it to end just one day earlier. It wasn’t until the last day of my tech-less life, that I finally accepted that I would be OK without a laptop or cellphone. 176 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

This was truly the first time it really struck me that I was being deprived of something. I sucked it up though, and forced people to actually talk to me while I ate my breakfast. Monday: DEPRESSION I honestly feel bad for anyone who crossed paths with me on Monday. It was not a good day for me. Living a life without technology was affecting my mood drastically and I attribute that to how lonely life feels without technology. It was proving difficult to engage with any of my friends and not being able to watch their weekend Snapchat stories gave me serious FOMO. I’m also in a long-distance relationship while my boyfriend, and this had been the longest period of time we’d gone without talking. To try to ease my depression and occupy my mind, I decided reading would be a worthwhile activity. I always complain that I want to read, but can’t bring myself to pick up a book after hours of reading and writing for work. Of course all my reading material is on my iPad, but luckily I had a hard copy of an oldiebut-goodie stashed in my car. I stopped by the Xanadu Cafe to curl up with it in a corner full of comfy couches. The glass case of savory scones, cupcakes, and cookies taunted me, so I grabbed a cappuccino and macarons. I couldn’t take a Google break or veer onto Twitter when there was a dry spell in the story like I naturally do on my iPad. I had to sit in the simplicity of turning a paper page and the occasional people watch. I spent the rest of the afternoon sunning on my patio and continued to read. The hours flew by and before I realized, it was time for dinner.

Later that morning, I went on a hike at the 1,000 steps to Laguna Beach. I connected myself with nature… since I couldn’t connect myself with Facebook. Step after step, I soon realized that even doing an unconnected activity, I missed my technology. Not even the breathtaking views or the fresh air could change my mood. I’m a hard-core fitness tracker and soon realized that I wouldn’t know how many miles I’d hiked without my Apple Watch. What is the point of exercising, when you can’t even revel in how many calories you’ve burned? My fury continued once I got to the oceanside because I couldn’t Instagram it. Trust me, the caption would have been #nofilter.

SCREEN QUEENS AND KINGS Some statistics on the average American… 1. We look at our phones an average of 4.7 hours a day 2. We spend 1.7 hours of our day on social media 3. Only 12% of Americans report spending time outside every day 4. Only 52% of Americans read a book outside of work or school last year

It was official, I’d hit the second stage: anger. Having to live technology-free was really starting to dampen my lifestyle and I was not happy about it.

Tuesday: BARGAINING Looking for some good vibes and distractions, I spent almost all day exercising. I started my day out at the gym,played some tennis, and ended up going for a run in the afternoon. To calm and exfoliate those sore muscles, I decided to treat myself. A spa day sounded perfect. I took a drive to The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel to indulge in some self-care. I opted for a revitalizing facial to help myself relax. Wrapped snug in a robe as I sipped on refreshing cucumber water, I enjoyed every minute of it. I knew I would be coming back to enjoy their Beach

LOOKING UP: Putting your phone away for only an hour can make a difference. Don’t be tempted to stare at your screen while waiting in a line. You’ll be amazed at the interesting people you meet or cool things you see just because you’re looking up.

I was in constant debate with myself and wanted to end the experiment early. I was bored. My laptop and cellphone were calling my name. I didn’t give in, though. My dad ended up suggesting I help him with some chores. He lured me in with the proposition of homemade candy. Who could resist making, and then eating, Almond Joys? I then helped him sort his coin collection, a hobby he’d done since he was little. I was beginning to realize that my dad had all of these fascinating hobbies and talents because he didn’t spend all day staring at a screen. Sure, he and my mom can be technology-challenged at times, but they’ve acquired skills over their lifetime that I worry my generation won’t even attempt.

Wednesday: ACCEPTANCE

Maybe it was because I knew I was getting my cellphone back at the end of the day, but Wednesday was actually a pretty good day. I felt more relaxed and less anxious about what I could possibly be missing out on. I decided to enjoy the sun by renting a Duffy from Balboa Bay Resort to not only celebrate my completion of this hard task at hand, but take in a stunning view while I was at it. I indulged in a charcuterie board with amazing cheeses and bubbly champagne. The breeze felt nice at 5 miles per hour and allowed me to take time to reflect on the week. The smooth ride let me see the bay clearly, instead of through an iPhone screen where I would normally by Snapchatting right now. I had promised myself I’d turn on my cellphone after dinner, but when I finished the meal I found myself apprehensive. I didn’t feel I needed, or wanted, to look at it quite yet. I actually dreaded having to sift through all the messages I knew had built up over the week.

What did I learn?

I’ve read about many people, who after this type of experiment, felt enlightened and unburdened, but I felt underwhelmed and unchanged. Was this because I’m so obsessed with these inanimate metal objects, that I couldn’t find any benefits of going without them? Initially, this experiment was lost on me. However, it turned out to be one of those “grass is greener” type of situations. It seemed like I wanted what I couldn't have. The day after my experiment, I was thrown back into the harsh reality that is our modern world. I had work emails waiting for responses, a boyfriend who wanted to continually text again and days of my friends’ social media posts to catch up on. I longed for the quiet that I’d become accustomed to. I wanted to be present in what I was doing, but couldn’t help but be distracted by the 10 other things pulling at me. It was all so jarring. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sitting here right now typing this article on my laptop. I wouldn’t, by any means, choose to give up the endless communication and convenience these appliances provide. However, I needed to be given perspective of what technology means in my life and this experiment did that. Recently, post-experiment, I caught myself half listening to a conversation I was having with my dad. I was scrolling through twitter when he had approached me and I hadn’t bothered to look up while he was speaking. Before this experiment, I wouldn’t have given that situation a second thought. Now, I see how rude that was. My cellphone and laptop make my life easier, but not necessarily better. Living without them, my life was a little richer in terms of relationships. Sure, I was lonely when no one was physically around, but that’s life. It made me appreciate the times when I did have company. We think that these devices are bringing us closer, and in a way, they are. We have to be able to put them down though and be social in a way that doesn’t require a Wi-Fi connection.

Everything You Need to Know to Have a Blast on Catalina Island

On a crisp, clear and beautiful day in sunny Southern California, Catalina Island sits about 22 miles off the coast; a mysterious treasure of land resting on the horizon, oft forgotten among the many activities offered along California’s shoreline. “Why haven’t we ever been there before?” people ask themselves. “I bet it’s beautiful.”

IT MOST DEFINITELY IS. For those not afforded the luxury of leisurely floating across the pacific on their yacht, the Catalina Express departing from Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point is a perfect alternative. A general admission ticket is required, or there is an option to upgrade for those feeling fancy, which grants exclusive access to “The Commodore Lounge.” For those that plan to be there for only a day or two, everything you need can fit into an ordinary backpack, which is convenient for the amount of walking the island has in store. The key is to pack light—an outfit or two, bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, sunglasses. For everything there is to do on the island, most items will be provided. The glide across the ocean from Long Beach took about an hour, but felt like mere minutes. Sunscreen and a sweater are all that is needed for this part of the journey, and only for those who plan to sit outside, which should be everyone. The deck of the Express greets its passengers with sunshine, a cool ocean breeze and, on most trips, views of a school of dolphins to point and giggle about with a mixed crowd of people from California to the Middle East. Sometimes it’s even possible to see a breaching whale. 184 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

Now, there are a few options for transportation on the island, most notably the famous Catalina golf carts. Everything in Avalon is within a 15-20 minute walk and this is the option most people will choose. So, it is important to take footwear that is comfortable walking distances in, or at least something to change into at the hotel.
