editor's note This magazine is a tribute to the risk-takers—the movers and the shakers—the brands and people who exist to inspire. These are the folks who shape our communities, bringing fresh ideas, new products and dreams to life. Within this issue, you’ll discover 20 pages that tell the stories of these inspiring people and how they’ve managed to make an impact. From an all-star lineup of female athletes (pg. 69) to wellness advocates and businesses working to make the world a better place, this guide is an ode to those who refuse to settle. And let’s be real; where would we be without the Thomas Edisons and Steve Jobs of the world? Sure, those may be some big names, but even in our small communities, people like them exist. With that said, we hope you enjoy the tales of inspiring people within these pages. Beyond our Alive Guide (pg. 51), you’ll find a handful of our favorite shops

and restaurants, including everything from San Juan Capistrano’s best dining hotspots (pg. 111) to charming brands like Mo’s Crib (pg. 132) and Business & Pleasure Co. (pg. 134). And for those in search of a well-rounded day of dining and retail therapy, we’ve got the ultimate guide to Bella Terra—Huntington’s Beach’s premier lifestyle destination (pg. 128). To wrap things up, we’ve pieced together a dreamy escape section that’ll surely give you the travel bug. From destinations like Catalina Island (pg. 154) and the high desert of Cuyama Valley (pg. 156) to tropical getaways down south like Tulum (pg. 146) and Cabo (pg. 159), your bags will be packed before we can say Bon Voyage! Here’s to inspiring neighbors and our remarkable SoCal community. It’s safe to say, we’ve got it good. Happy reading!

From your girl-next-door, Orange County local to an icon of the entire Bachelor franchise, Tayshia Adams is making her mark in more ways than one. Adams has experienced just about every role in Bachelor Nation, starting in 2019 as a contestant on Colton Underwood’s season. Shortly after, she starred in “Bachelor of Paradise” and eventually ended up replacing Clare Crawley as the 2020 star of “The Bachelorette.” After finding love and getting engaged to Zac Clark at the end of her season, you’d expect Adams’ stint with Bachelor Nation to be over—but not quite.

A

Adams, along with Kaitlyn Bristowe, co-hosted this past season of “The Bachelorette,” starring Katie Thurston. Although Adams felt it was very unexpected for her, she explains, “I’ve been with the franchise for a couple of years now, and I just created a really good relationship with them—I feel like I was there at the right time.” Not only acting as a host but also as mentors to Thurston, former Bachelorettes Adams and Bristowe helped guide her through this unique experience that not everyone can relate to— both having lived it before. Adams notes, “I wish I had a mentor or female host on my season because it’s someone that can relate, and there’s nothing like talking to a girlfriend. I was really happy we were able to do that for Katie.” Adams’ positive energy and authentic advice allowed for a change of pace on the 17th season of America’s beloved reality show. “When I was presented with the offer, I thought it was the opportunity of a lifetime, and the franchise is something that has really played a role in the woman I am today. I felt like it was the right thing to do,” says Adams. Hosting is something Adams has always wanted to do, and now that she’s found this startingoff position, it’s a career path she certainly wants to continue to go down. And it seems she’s on the path to success, as both Adams and Bristowe are confirmed to

be co-hosting another season of “The Bachelorette”— the upcoming 18th season starring Michelle Young. You can also find Adams co-hosting the Bachelor Nation podcast, “Click Bait,” which discusses juicy gossip and the latest entertainment news. With almost two million Instagram followers, Adams has remained true to herself through her entire journey to stardom—her bubbly yet strong personality, infectious smile and real-life Disney princess aura all included. “I have a really good support system that keeps me very grounded and humble, but also my faith is something I constantly rely on, on a daily basis. With that, it keeps things in perspective and allows me to just be me,” Adams notes. Being the second Black Bachelorette and also the first who is biracial (she is half AfricanAmerican, half Mexican), Adams recognized the platform and representation she would showcase to others. “Since day one of being a contestant on the show, I just wanted to be myself and represent women who looked like me, but also have people realize I’m more relatable to them regardless of what we may look like, where we live or what we’re into,” Adams explains. Over the past two years, crucial, tough and educational conversations have been amplified not only on “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” but across our country as well.

The importance of inclusivity and representation of minorities is strong and loud, and it’s clear that longstanding shows and systems have had to reevaluate their priorities and processes. Adams believes in having a voice and speaking up when something isn’t quite right; she hopes to have a hand in shaping future casts and behind-the-scenes happenings to ensure representation is apparent in all aspects. The show’s 19 years on TV has predominantly showcased a white cast; the franchise, however, now has an opportunity to be a diverse platform that sparks cultural conversations while representing minorities who make up our country. With two female hosts and a more diverse cast, the show is taking its responsibility seriously by heading in a positive direction. Adams says, “As much as I wish I could change everything overnight and have it be a certain way, I know that the franchise is progressing daily, and I’m really proud to be a part of it.” Currently, you can find Adams living bicoastal in both Orange County, California and New York City (where fiancé Clark resides). Sounds like the best of both worlds, right? Adams confirms it most definitely is—New York City being a lively destination full of culture and Newport Beach being where she grew up and where her family lives. As a west-coaster and foodie at heart, Adams gushes about her favorite restaurants when out in her hometown: “We have a little Zinc Cafe in Corona del Mar; do not skimp on the French toast— you better get the French toast.” She mentions Gabbi’s Mexican Kitchen, Bear Flag and Buddha’s Favorite as other favorite local spots. “For dessert,

go to Sidecar Doughnuts in Costa Mesa—my favorite donut shop in the world. I love donuts; I actually was eating those donuts when I got the call to be “The Bachelorette,” so they are very, very sentimental donuts to me.”

While Adams is busy traveling for work, partnering with brands for collaborations, shooting magazine covers, taking her hosting career to the next level and so much more, the couple has had to learn to balance the real-life aspect of their relationship after the fairy-tale reality show ended. Making it a point to plan a date night every Friday evening, the two foodies love trying out new restaurants and exploring the city by foot. The couple also loves weekend staycations around the city. “We’ve definitely learned how to navigate both of our careers—being present there but also being very supportive of one another,” she notes. Away from the spotlight and the paparazzi, they are a normal couple simply trying to navigate the ups and downs of a relationship. Adams plans to soon make New York her permanent residence to feel more grounded. “I’m not gonna lie; it’s tough having two different closets,” Adams laughs. If there’s one thing she’s learned throughout her journey, it’s to be fearless, and she encourages others to do so. “If you want to do something, try it out and do it. If it fails, okay. Keep going; we’re not told enough that failing is okay,” explains Adams. Acting as a role model and inspiration for young girls across the nation, Adams demonstrates poise, confidence and kindness. “Us women are so strong, and there’s so much going for each and every one of us, but there’s enough room for us all,” Adams says.

From finding her spiritual awakening in 2008 to recently co-founding an inner wellness brand, meditation guide, author and entrepreneur Ambi Kavanagh has always listened to her heart—and the energy around her—to find the path to her higher self. b

But this journey didn’t start right away for Kavanagh. Although she always had an interest in astrology and grew up in a family that followed an Ayurvedic lifestyle, she says that she needed to find her spiritual path on her own. Then, after breaking up with someone she thought she was going to marry, she knew she was on the brink of a shift. “I needed to bring myself into energetic alignment,” she says. This shift led her to share her gifts and help others on their own spiritual journeys through performing sound baths. “A sound bath essentially is a meditative experience where you’re bathed in vibrations,” Kavanagh explains. “Different musical instruments are used—I use planetary gongs and crystal balls—and people feel the instruments in their bodies. It’s more healing than simple meditation and completely calms down the nervous system.”

Between her sound baths and becoming a reiki master in late 2014, Kavanagh was attuned to and thriving with the energy that surrounded her—but that flow was hindered during the pandemic. Kavanagh, however, found a creative solution to connect with people while still maintaining physical distance: The Alchemy Store’s Sound Bath Candles! Each candle has its own intention and is crafted with organic coconut wax and essential oils, infused with reiki energy and combined with a custom-guided sound bath meditation, so anyone can enjoy an energetic reset from the comfort of their own home. Simply light, get comfortable and press play. “I didn’t want to make products just to make products; I wanted to make something to really help people,” says Kavanagh. “It’s really about uplifting and inspiring people and encouraging them to become higher, more healed versions of themselves.”

During his final tour of duty in Iraq, retired naval officer Eric Johnson started brewing his own cold brew, experimenting with different recipes. His coffee concoctions soon became a hot commodity, and with his time in service coming to an end, he knew he wanted to create something of his own. During his time overseas, Johnson noticed how a simple cup of coffee or tea often bridged the gap between cultural differences. With this concept at the core, he set out to create a coffee company with a spirit that would connect people from all walks of life. Now don’t get us wrong; there are certainly other cold-brew offerings out there. But when it comes to community, Trident Coffee sets itself apart by fostering connections through symbology and storytelling. According to Johnson, each of Trident Coffee’s nitro cold brews reminds customers that they are part of something bigger than themselves. And when it comes down to the science and methodology of crafting the brand’s

smooth brews, well, that’s something that sets Trident apart too. Johnson explains, “San Diego is the mecca for craft beer, so when we started to make coffee, we modeled ourselves like a brewery. All our nitro cold brews are on nitro from the tap. We allow the coffee and the water to steep at cold temperatures for over 20 hours. That allows all the flavors to come through without stripping the acidity off the coffee bean. From the roast profiles in the coffee to the water profiles, it’s all formulated to get the best out of the coffee, just like brewers try to get the best out of each beer.” While the ethos is modeled on craft beer, Trident Coffee also puts health and wellness at the center of its mission. “I have always really been into health, wellness and fitness,” Johnson shares. “A lot of preworkouts on the market have a lot of artificial ingredients. By using nitro cold brew, you are able to get more caffeine out of the coffee without having to add any sugars or milk because it’s naturally sweeter.” While Johnson’s military background and the tasting San Diego

Put to the Test » Ferrara was coached by Lake at a Navy SEAL Fit Camp in 2016 and was specifically asked by a mutual friend to make sure he got the “most” out of the already intense experience.

Collagen Is Crucial

» Glycine, the amino acid found in collagen, supports metabolic function, bone and joint health and prevents bone loss, making it a crucial part of exercise recovery.

After years of unwittingly riding fresh powder atop the same ski slopes, two adrenaline enthusiasts would eventually join forces to bottle the best powderbased supplements in the business. As athletes themselves, founders Sean Lake and TJ Ferrara created BUBS Naturals on the basis of a simple mission: “Feel Great. Do Good.” Their topnotch supplements backed by philanthropic values do just that.

In their prior careers, Lake and Ferrara both worked in the snowboarding industry, unknowingly attending the same events and trade shows. After years of shared interests in action sports and strong backgrounds in marketing, the two finally crossed paths at a Navy SEAL Fit Camp in 2014 and reconnected the next year to spontaneously embark on their new business venture. While hanging out over a casual cup of coffee, Ferrara noticed a jar of collagen supplements sitting on Lake’s countertop. A fairly new concept at the time, Lake raved about the noticeable positive impacts collagen had on his athleticism. “It was absolutely transformative for me. I would run marathons, had been in the action sports world for a long time and did a lot of CrossFit and SEAL Fit stuff; I’ve put a lot of miles on my body, and collagen really helped me get back in the game.” 60 LOCALE MAGAZINE

» Lake’s wife bought him his first jar of collagen, which eventually sparked the idea to create BUBS Naturals.

Giving Back

» At BUBS Naturals, 10% of profits go to charity.

Lake and Ferrara’s hope is to honor Glen’s legacy and his way of life, where giving back, helping others and helping yourself go hand-in-hand.

» Lake was a professional snowboarder, later transitioning into a team manager for Burton, a snowboarding apparel and equipment brand. He and high-school aged Ferrara worked the same events during this time, though the two don’t recall meeting this early on!

After seeing the passion Lake held for the supplement, Ferrara casually suggested creating their own supplement brand, and it didn’t take much convincing from there. BUBS Naturals borrows its name from Lake’s long-time best friend and roommate, Glen ‘BUB’ Doherty, who went out a hero serving as a Navy SEAL at the terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya in 2012. The brand serves to uphold his legacy and centers its values around his lighthearted nature and adventure-seeking way of life. “If you’d met him, you would remember him, and you would’ve considered him one of your best friends,” says Lake fondly. “He lit up a room with conversation, storytelling and smiles.”

sustainably sourced ingredients—each thoroughly checked for cleanliness, higher solubility and an improved flavor (or lack thereof). “We pursued the highest level of independent testing that we could find in the country to test for quality of ingredients, and we do this through NSF (National Sports Foundation),” says Lake. BUBS prides itself on being the only brand out there that tests 100% of their unflavored collagen through NSF, known as the highest standard and the only seal of approval used by all major professional sports leagues.

Created to improve the wellbeing of athletes, thrillseekers and Navy SEALs alike, BUBS has donated over $115,000 total to charity thus far, primarily the Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation, helping to transition special operations soldiers from active duty to civilian life. Lake and Ferrara’s hope is to honor Glen’s legacy and his way of life, where giving back, helping others and helping yourself go hand-in-hand.

Through their relentless efforts towards creating only the cleanest, most effective supplements for your body, the two find inspiration through positive testimonies given by customers from every walk of life. Lake instantly recalls one customer’s anecdote in particular: “A 50-year-old former Marine who had undergone several surgeries and tried every known product that he could think of over the course of a decade stumbled upon BUBS and wrote us a lengthy email on how we changed his life. That’s moving stuff. That’s what makes you want to get up, go to work and do it all over.”

Best known for their sustainably sourced, high-quality collagen supplement that improves digestive health, joint health and workout recovery time, the brand has since created a MCT Oil Powder that’s extracted from 100% sustainably sourced virgin coconut oil to promote cognitive focus and boost natural energy. Bubs also offers a unique “Fountain of Youth” formula that combines collagen and 1000mg vitamin C. Setting their supplements apart from other companies is their

BUBS Naturals was founded with the purpose of improving the lives of athletes and has created a meaningful, rewarding venture for founders Lake and Ferrara along the way. The duo is committed to continually creating and expanding their selection of the highest-quality, most effective supplements out there with the genuine hope of raising athletes to the height of their abilities. Goodwill of Orange County’s mission statement, listed on their website, says it all: “Goodwill helps people who are facing barriers find and keep jobs, which provides purpose, pride and dignity.” With their first store opening in Santa Ana in 1924, Goodwill of Orange County has since grown to 24 stores and several donation drop-off locations throughout the county. “All money raised at our Orange County locations stays local to help fund OC programs,” says Eric Smissen, director of marketing and communications for Goodwill of Orange County. “About 92-94 cents per dollar goes back to these programs.” They

Chari Hawkins began her track and field career by joining cross country in seventh grade and exploring disciplines like high jump and hurdles in high school. “I have always loved the variety and ability to learn so many different skills; it just keeps me on my toes,” says Hawkins, who trains in San Diego. She specialized in several events in college before transitioning into her current role as a Team USA heptathlete. During meets, Hawkins competes in seven events, including the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run. Learning to prioritize mental health has been a crucial part of her athletic journey. “I had anxiety issues going into college, and something in me knew that if [I didn’t pursue track professionally] I would regret it because I had stressed out so much during college… and knew I didn’t reach my full potential,” remarks Hawkins. She reframed her mindset and overcame struggles with body image and social comparison. “It doesn’t matter how [my body] looks; it matters how it runs,” describes Hawkins. “By thinking that, my mental health improved in terms of body image [and] I started feeling better in my performance, so it was a two-fold victory.” Hawkins spent the past year improving her techniques, recovering from surgery and gearing up for the Trials. “There’s a little bit more electricity in the air when it’s [the] Olympic Trials,” says Hawkins. “It’s everything you’ve prepared for in the past four years coming down to a few moments.”

Liv Stone, a congenital bilateral amputee, discovered surfing at a 2017 retreat hosted by pro surfer and shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton. While she grew up playing sports, nothing felt more natural than being on the board. Stone took to surfing quickly and was able to stand up on her second wave. After returning from a camp with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, the Pennsylvania native began traveling to New Jersey on weekends to train with an instructor. It was during this time that she received an incredible opportunity. “I was really engrossed with the sport, and after realizing it's what I love, I got a call from the para surf Team USA captain [Dani Burt],” says Stone. “She said, ‘Liv, I’ve seen you at different camps, and I’d really love for you to be on our team.’” This invitation to compete in the 2018 International Surfing Association World Championships spurred Stone to pursue her dreams, and she successfully convinced her family to move to San Diego. Since training daily, Stone has improved and risen up the ranks. “I’m blessed to be in the water every day, and I feel myself getting stronger,” says Stone. She earned her first gold medal at the 2020 International Surfing Association World Championships and is ranked number one in her division. “I encourage anyone, especially young girls, to conquer from within and follow their dreams,” she says. “The sky’s the limit; you can do anything you set your mind to no matter what the obstacle is.”

“I’m blessed to be in the water every day, and I feel myself getting stronger.” — L IV STO N E

Gifted and Lifted

» Stone first got involved with the adaptive community seven to eight years ago by attending amputee camps. She credits a strong support system: her family, coaches, fellow adaptive athletes and friends at nonprofit Challenged Athletes Foundation who cheer her on and empower her every day. Her favorite moment harks back to when she won her first gold medal, and her adaptive family picked her up and carried her up the beach. 72 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Sense of Community

» “I didn’t know anyone else who looked like me or had a disability because I grew up in such a small town. Now I hang out with adaptive people almost every weekend. We kick back, surf, have breakfast and hike. It’s a family. Everyone supports everyone.”

Competition Ritual

» Before competing, Stone likes to spend time alone and look for seashells on the beach. “Spending time with my thoughts is a way for me to regroup and get my head in the game.”

From the time he was in seventh grade, rapper Hugh Augustine has created music. It was a craft that took him from his home in the Crenshaw District to college in New Orleans, where he performed local gigs with G-Eazy and then eventually on tour around the world with Isaiah Rashad. “Touring was a life-changing experience for me because it’s almost like watching all of your dreams come to fruition, you know?” Augustine shares. “You see yourself in front of this big crowd and they know your music and everybody’s giving you good energy... It’s really a magical moment.” After returning from his tour, Augustine continued to push his music career with his first solo album, “Dubious,” and more performances and tours, but in 2020, COVID-19 had other plans. Not only did the pandemic affect his music, but it was threatening his vegan lifestyle as well. The few grocery stores close to him had a shortage of fresh produce and other foods that people need in order to eat wholesome, healthful meals.

“It’s honestly surreal to be in a position to impact my community.” —H U GH AU GU STINE

Today, Augustine’s music career is going strong, and so is Hugh’s Hot Bowls, which now partners with Summaeverythang Community Center to provide free hot meals to the South Central LA community. “It’s honestly surreal to be in a position to impact my community,” Augustine says. “So to be someone that takes a hobby and a lifestyle choice to create a platform as a way to get this information out— that has been a dream come true.”

» Augustine had grown up cooking with his mom, but crafting meals for masses of people was a new challenge. He realized that he loves cooking for the same reason he loves making music: the process. “That kind of made it an easy transition for me—just understanding that there are layers and you gotta blend all those layers together to get to that sound, to get that flavor you want,” Augustine explains.

Listen Up

» Augustine’s family has been in Los Angeles for a century, and his most recent album, “100 Years Later,” celebrates that legacy and serves as a dedication to his experiences and perspective. He calls it his love letter to LA.

Creating Change

» As a gun violence survivor, another organization that’s close to Augustine’s heart is WalkGoodLA, founded by friend and filmmaker Etienne Maurice. WalkGoodLA helps spread awareness about gun violence and offers group yoga classes to create a safe space for people to learn and heal.

Fortunately, his mom, who worked as a caterer, had a Restaurant Depot card, which meant that he could access wholesale inventory to support his vegan lifestyle. But Augustine, a natural-born problemsolver, wasn’t about to turn his back on his community. So in 2021, he created Hugh’s Hot Bowls, a plant-based food service created to provide healthy, delicious $10-meal options in a time and place where access was extremely limited.

It’s a known fact that spending time in nature does the mind and body good. Getting some fresh air can improve your mood, lower your blood pressure and even improve immune function. But don’t worry if you’re not the outdoorsy type. You don’t need a full-blown camping trip to reap these rewards—visiting your local botanical garden will do the trick! Luckily, Southern California is blooming with tons of beautiful gardens and arboreta, so there are plenty of opportunities for you to experience some local natural beauty. Here are four of our favorites that we’ve picked especially for you.

Stirring the Pot Founder and CEO of Tabu Shabu Dishes the Deets on OC’s Sizzling Foodie Scene

Costa Mesa NAME: Jeff Chon JOB TITLE: Founder and CEO of Tabu Shabu

3 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE OC COMMUNITY:

RESIDENT OF: Costa Mesa

1. The people; they are vibrant and full of life! 2. The food culture; it’s among the best in California. 3. The unity; for being a very divisive time in history, I see a great deal of togetherness.

LOCAL LIVING: 18 years

DIGGING IN

My favorite thing to order at Tabu Shabu is Snake River Farms Wagyu short rib with tonkotsu pork broth and ginger garlic sauce in a porridge format.

“We strive to provide an incredibly fun and energetic experience when eating out while still being healthy and delicious!”

LOCAL HANGOUT

Ò Eagle and Pig is a traditional barbershop in Costa Mesa. After working long hours, there aren't many things that truly allow me to wind down and have some genuine male comradery. It's like going to a clubhouse with great conversation and great beer, and you get the feeling that comes with a nice haircut and shave. www.eagleandpig.com

FAMILY IS EVERYTHING

Ò My family inspires me daily. My parents inspire me to work hard to give my kids the same or better opportunities than they were able to give to me. My wife and kids inspire me because they bring me happiness even when my business life gets difficult.

PIZZA MY HEART

Ò When it comes to a Friday night slice of ‘za, Brewery X in Anaheim is my favorite spot. The pizza here is easily the best in Orange County and they have an amazing selection of beers that range from hoppy to hazy. But when it comes to choosing your pie, the buffalo chicken is a must! It comes with hand-battered fried chicken, blue cheese crumbles, buffalo sauce, ranch drizzle and green onions. www.brewery-x.com

IN THE OUTBACK

Ò Outpost Kitchen on Bristol St in Costa Mesa is a little gem near South Coast Plaza. It’s an Aussie-inspired restaurant that uses organic and local ingredients. Go on a nice warm day, sit on the patio and try the ahi wrap. You won’t regret it! www.outpostkitchen.com

Ò I have developed amazing friendships from both the employees and guests at Tabu Shabu. I have always loved the dynamic between people who serve and the people they serve. As cliche as it may sound, it is amazing how a good meal and drinks can change someone’s entire outlook and attitude by simply bringing people together. I know—it’s cheesy, but I’ve seen it firsthand for many years.

Eat, Drink, Beach, Repeat This Local Laguna Beach Chef Knows Where to Get the Best Bites

Laguna Beach NAME: Glen Tinsley JOB TITLE: Executive Chef of Harley Laguna Beach

3 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT LAGUNA BEACH:

RESIDENT OF: Laguna Beach

1. Its coastal location. 2. The tight-knit community. 3. The opportunity to serve locals and visitors in a truly beautiful city.

LOCAL LIVING: 30+ years

ADVICE FROM THE CHEF

Learn the basics, hone your technique and be committed to the craft of cooking.... otherwise find a different career path because you will only be disappointed and frustrated by the amount of blood you need to give.

“My favorite part about working here at Harley Laguna Beach is that we are able to create a menu of local ingredients that may change daily based on what is in peak season, and we gear this menu toward our local residents. Also, the fact that I can walk to work helps!”

CHEFFIN’ UP

Ò My favorite part about being a chef is being able to walk through a local farmers market or butcher shop and use those ideas as a blueprint to create a dish. When it comes to dining at Harley, I always recommend the Langoustine Raviolo (with lemon crema, local nectarines, cherry tomatoes and purple basil). www.harleylagunabeach.com

DAILY DOSE OF INSPO

Ò There are many things that inspire me, but to narrow it down, my partner Lisa, the recent owls that have taken up residence in our neighborhood and our local ocean sunsets are my top three! All of these things in our little North Laguna neighborhood keep me going daily.

LOCAL FLAVORS

Ò Since I work at Harley Laguna Beach on Friday nights, on my days off, I enjoy going to San Juan Capistrano. I like to get lengua tacos from El Campeon Taqueria or a breakfast burrito from A’s Burgers in Dana Point. Both spots are delicious! www.elcampeoninc.com asburgersrestaurant.com

CUT N’ CATCH

Ò My favorite hidden gems in Orange County are The Den in Dana Point for a fresh barber cut followed by a visit to Jon’s Fish Market across the street for locally caught seafood for dinner. You can’t beat that combo! www.thedeninlaguna.com www.jonsfish.com

Ò Sushi Laguna is one of my favorite local restaurants to support. This intimate spot is situated just a few blocks from the sand and serves up the most delicious yet affordable sushi in town. This is the epitome of a casual, welcoming sushi spot that never disappoints. Order the Linzy Roll with blue crab, avocado and gobo root, all topped with fresh halibut, crunchy garlic and ponzu sauce!

Celebrity plant-based Chef Matthew Kenney and business partner Christine Mulholland have brought a modern fastfood concept to Costa Mesa. The first outpost for VEG’D, this all-day spot serves vegetablefocused American fare to healthy eaters on the go.

WRITTEN BY: CHEF WHITNEY ARONOFF

Costa Mesa

FOOD • Everything from sauces to burger patties and brownies are made in-house for maximum flavor and quality ingredients.

Mulholland had the idea for a plant-based fast-food eatery in college but wasn’t sure how to bring it to life. Passionate about the planet and sustainability, she went into marketing and sales, getting businesses to swap their paper products for more sustainable options. While on the road for work, she found vegetarian fast-food to be processed, heavy and flavorless. With this in mind, she decided it was time to bring her vision to life. Mulholland then connected with Kenney, who is best known for his Venice eatery, Plant Food & Wine. After a year of looking for the right space, they landed on a former Del Taco location in Costa Mesa. Now, OC residents can be the first to enjoy this iconic fast-yet-healthy concept. “It was important to us to make VEG’D affordable [and] accessible, with competitive pricing compared to other fast-food eateries, while still serving a superior product that is nourishing,” explains Mulholland.

DECOR • An eco-chic, light and airy feel gives this fast-food joint a California vibe. Don’t feel like getting out of your car? No problem—hit the drive thru!

PRICE • $5-$10.50; the prices of the items are affordable, accessible and competitive to the standard fastfood restaurant.

With both dine-in and drive-thru options, VEG’D is upgrading the outdated, unhealthy fast-food concept.

VEG’D continues to set itself apart with its dedication to crafting health-conscious fare and preserving the environment. Chef Kenney and the team take pride in serving delicious and nutritious food—fast! 94 LOCALE MAGAZINE

VERDICT • An upgraded drive-thru alternative, this is the spot you’ll be craving on all your road trips.

With both dine-in and drive-thru options, VEG’D is upgrading the outdated, unhealthy fast-food concept. Expect dishes made with seasonal organic produce, no refined sugars and no animal products. VEG’D is unique in this space, as it is vegetable-forward, serving vibrant foods and far less fake meat. Pro tip: order the Forest Smoothie and 50% of the net profits will be donated to plant trees and protect forests in Sumatra, the third-largest tropical rainforest on the planet.

As the adage goes, “Dogs are a man’s best friend,” and we won’t argue with that. We bring our furry pals with us wherever we go, whether it’s a shopping spree, daily coffee run or on vacation—heck, some folks even bring them to work!

Palm Springs

FOOD • With a Filipino heritage and background in Japanese cuisine, Executive Chef Corey Baker creates classic dishes with an artful twist that’ll have you head over heels.

Lucky for dog-lovers, the sunny city of Palm Springs just welcomed a new Fido-friendly restaurant and bar that’s off. the. leash. No, really— this fresh dining concept spans over 7,000 square feet and features a main dining room, chic lounge, breezy atrium, two bars and a patio complete with palms and stylish rattan furnishings. The entire space tips its cap to the midcentury era with elements like curved arches, clean lines and natural wood finishes. Hues of teal and terracotta are woven throughout along with pops of playful wallpaper, creating a stunning yet warm ambiance. “Our creative director and interior designer, Jenni-Kate Rogers of Raven and the Willow, created all of these little moments throughout the space that make it inviting and comfortable,” says Bryan Rogers, co-owner of Boozehounds.

DECOR • Boozehounds fuses midmod charm with desert drama, yielding a venue that’s chic, sophisticated and far from average. Prepare to be wooed.

Okay, so what’s in it for the dogs? Well, Boozehounds offers a curated menu just for furry friends! While you sip back and relax, your pal can chow down on offerings like chicken bowls, duck treats, turkey jerky and the popular Weenie-Tini dish made with chicken broth, chicken whipped cream and a doggie biscuit crumble.

PRICE

VERDICT Don’t fret—they feed humans too. Boozehounds’ Executive Chef Corey Baker pieced together a divine coastal-California menu with a Japanese twist that’ll make your (imaginary) tail wag. From generational dishes like chicken adobo that was passed down from Baker’s grandma to seafood specials like Tasmanian ocean trout crudo and the 48-hours miso-marinated fish and chips, you’re sure to find something that’ll please your palate. So the next time you find yourself in search of an outing with Fido, this spot gets five paws up! 96 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Everyone relishes a good oldfashioned trip to their favorite chain. Don’t lie—hitting In-N-Out for a juicy double double makes you giddy. Tucked in the hip and spirited neighborhood of North Park, this new concept on University Ave offers a buzzy spot for brunch, dinner or a crafty after-hours cocktail. The space oozes charm with its crisp white interior and accents of brick, marble and wood. Draping plants hang from mounted shelves along with brassy light fixtures, giving the space a warm, homey feel. “We really wanted the space to feel like you’re dining in Chef Ronnie’s kitchen,” says owner and designer Jillian Ziska of To Be Designed. “The space is designed as if you are looking into his kitchen from the backyard, while the rest of it reflects his home’s cozy courtyard.”

GOING WITH

Sara Lezama Owner and Founder of Rye Goods

WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR GORSKI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: KAILEE WALTERS

O

One step into this quaint bakery located at Lido Marina Village and it’s love at first sight (or should we say, smell). Rye Goods is a fully organic sourdough bakery and deli that emphasizes natural, organic and seasonal ingredients. From their best-selling country loafs to their sweet and savory pastries, the menu focuses on utilizing wellsourced ingredients (almost all of them coming from California) by partnering with local farms like The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano. Femalefounded and owned by Sara Lezama, she explains, “I’ve never worked with so many people that care about the ingredients and want to get hands-on with the farms and farmers.” The bakery is 80% women-employed and strives to better the community. A variety of bread and pastry items can be found at local coffee shops and small businesses around Orange County (think Daydream Surf Shop, Reborn Coffee and Neat Coffee). While

the breads and pastries definitely stand out, specialty items like sandwiches, dumplings and ramen from the grab-and-go deli are not to be overlooked. Lezama explains, “My family is Peruvian-based and my partner is Taiwanese, and we tried a bunch of new foods [during the pandemic]; everyone is super accepting, tries it and likes it.” Rye Goods recently launched a dinner series that celebrates women in the kitchen through a mix of Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese cuisine. It’s a playful, intimate dinner that’s held in the evenings, Thursday through Saturday, and hosted on the back porch of Rye Goods. Seats must be reserved for the dinner series, and if you’re stopping in for a pastry or loaf, be prepared for a line out the door. With a strong ethos and mission of celebrating the earth, real food and diversity, Rye Goods has become much more than a bakery—it’s become a beloved community staple that fills the tummy and warms the heart.

“I’ve never worked with so many people that care about the ingredients and want to get handson with the farms and farmers.” —Sara Lezama

Newport Beach

Feeding the Community

» Like most small businesses, “The pandemic put us to the test,” Lezama explains. They were 100% wholesale before turning their business direct to the consumer, supplying customers with market boxes to pick up and take home.

It Must Be Good

» Lezama’s favorite item on the menu is the fiveseed loaf. It’s a must-try!

Community Support

» The sourdough was the first item on their menu. “We started selling to Farmhouse in Orange County,” explains Lezama. “I met Chef Rich Mead, who has been an inspiration, and he encouraged me to make them and sell them.”

WELCOMING YOU INN Inn at the Mission’s Ysidora Restaurant & Lounge Pays Homage to Hospitality, History and Spanish Culture

...Ysidora is a home and a haven to all its guests.

Named in honor of the gracious former matriarch of Mission San Juan Capistrano, Ysidora Restaurant & Lounge exudes warmth and hospitality from the first step to the last bite. Upon entering, guests are greeted by lavish Spanish tile mosaics and the lush, fragrant scent of olive trees. However, it is Chef Aaron Obregon’s stellar selection of Spanish classics, including authentic tapas and savory woodgrilled seafood, that allows this SoCal spot to transport guests to the sweeping bluffs of Barcelona.

Hospitality at Its Heart

Comforting Confections

• Known for her grace and hospitality, Ysidora Forster ran the Mission with saintly benevolence. So when the restaurant that bears her name opened its doors just last year, it was no surprise to see such hospitality pervading the premises. Whether it is the familiar smell of fresh baked churros or the breathtaking sight of the sun-kissed stucco, Ysidora is a home and a haven to all its guests.

• When dining at Ysidora, be sure to leave room for dessert. Offering up everything from familiar favorites (apple cinnamon churros) to decadent Spanish classics (Spanish flan crème brulee), finding a delectable dessert to indulge in has never been easier.

Don’t Skip the Scenery • Don’t let your Spanish escape end after your meal; be sure to take a stroll through historic downtown San Juan Capistrano, the birthplace of Orange County, and see all of the stunning sites and attractions the area has to offer, including the stunning Mission San Juan Capistrano. 112 LOCALE MAGAZINE

A Slice of Spain • Head Chef Aaron Obregon’s meticulously crafted and seasonally selected menus work to help each of Ysidora’s guests escape to the Spanish countryside. With a curated selection of shareable tapas, fresh, sustainably sourced seafood and decadent flame-grilled favorites, the food at Ysidora is equal parts authentic and exciting.

TRACKSIDE TREASURE This Railway Depot Restaurant Serves Up Fresh Fare in a Historic Setting

It’s no secret that Trevor’s at the Tracks embraces the history that surrounds it.

Green-Thumbed

• Not only does the menu feature produce grown in the on-site garden, but Trevor’s mother, Jeanne, is the keeper of the garden.

Brought to life in 2017 while drawing inspiration from the 1800s, Trevor’s at the Tracks is the quintessential old-town eatery. Situated in the heart of San Juan Capistrano’s historic district, this decadent bistro resides inside one of the region’s oldest train depots, which was built over a century ago and boasts an elegant display of master brickworking. And if the charming, ivy-adorned patio seating doesn’t impress, then the menu certainly will. Featuring five-star favorites from around the globe, Trevor’s never ceases to embrace and execute their motto: “Locally Acquired | Globally Inspired.”

History at its Heart

Innovative and International

• It’s no secret that Trevor’s at the Tracks embraces the history that surrounds it. The restaurant has made a conscious effort to preserve and honor the old-world, Spanishstyle architecture that resides within. Whether it’s the iconic terra-cotta tile roof, the brilliant ivycovered stonework or the beautiful blanco dome that towers overhead, Trevor’s is a living homage to the community’s Spanish roots.

• The only thing better-looking than the restaurant’s exterior is the food served within. Encompassing a dazzling array of international favorites, including delicious bites from Europe, Mexico and the Far East, Chef Joseph Tripi is constantly perfecting classics and creating bold new innovations.

Home-Grown Heroics • While many places boast about their ability to source local ingredients, Trevor’s takes it to a whole new level. Aside from maintaining close ties to local, sustainable vendors, the Trevor’s team maintains an on-site garden, from which they source much of the produce used in their dishes.

Dinner and a Show • If its sensational spread of savory eats isn’t enough to draw you in, an exceptional lineup of local musicians and entertainers is sure to impress. With that many blends to choose from, it’s no surprise they took home the SJC Dispatch’s “Best Wine” award in 2017.

Effortless Ambiance • In the event that their pristine, white Spanish stucco exterior may not be enough to draw hungry onlookers to their doors, the wine bar and restaurant also features over 3,000 square feet of outdoor patio seating. Rustic teak tables, vine-adorned pillars and a roaring fireplace all work to create an unrivaled dining experience.

Created With Intention This South African Home Brand Succeeds Through Sustainability and Community

WRITTEN BY: ALLIE LEBOS

Mo’s Crib was started by South African sisters Mo and Michelle Mokone. Since creating their brand, the Mokone sisters have managed to create job opportunities for locals in their small town of Pretoria, South Africa, all while producing sustainable and ecofriendly planters and baskets made from recycled PVC water pipes. “Our mission was really to manufacture sustainable products that are made from unique materials that you wouldn’t expect,” explains Mo Mokone.

Hustling From Home

» Even during the global pandemic, Mo and Michelle managed to seal the deal on all of their biggest contracts from the comfort of their own bedrooms while wearing pajamas!

Adding to the Outdoors

Mo and Michelle Mokone Founders, Mo’s Crib

» In addition to creating some new lampshades made from PVC material, Mo’s Crib is also in the process of creating some amazing outdoor furniture that will fit in perfectly on any SoCal patio.

Female Bred and Led

» While Mo’s Crib does employ a handful of men who contribute greatly to the business, women make up about 90% of the staff at this female-led company.

Focusing on sustainability has become an increasingly important condition for many shoppers over the last few years. From the style and quality of the product to being able to truly know how it is made, trying to find brands that live up to all of these expectations can be overwhelming. While it can be difficult to know where and how to shop sustainably, companies like Mo’s Crib are bringing customers eco-friendly products while maintaining an impressive and creative style with a story.

“Michelle and I come from a povertystricken background, and we’ve had to use nothing but our own resources.” —Mo Mokone

“Also, being that the unemployment rate is so high in our small community, we wanted to provide job opportunities for local men and women to make a real change.” Described as a “natural born artist” by her sister Michelle, Mo developed a skill for origami while in London, leading her to eventually be inspired to sell her creations at a local market. “We never expected to sell as many items as we did, but people loved them!” exclaims Michelle. “Eventually, we came up with the PVC baskets, and by 2019, we were running a full-time business.” Now, Mo’s Crib products are available for direct purchasing through Crate & Barrel, one of the most popular and soughtafter furniture brands in the United States. “Michelle and I come from a poverty-stricken background, and we’ve had to use nothing but our own resources,” explains Mo. “I think what I’ve been most proud of throughout this journey is the hussle that we’ve both had. We are 100% selffunded. Everything that we’ve created from so little really is amazing.”

Making Waves in O’side This Oceanside Local Shares His Must-Visit Neighborhoods in Sunny San Diego

Oceanside NAME: Michael Stephens JOB TITLE: Area Managing Director at Hyatt Hotels Corporation

3 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT OCEANSIDE:

RESIDENT OF: Oceanside

1. It’s incredibly original and unlike any other place I’ve lived. 2. The community is tight-knit yet welcoming and supportive. 3. The town is culturally diverse with a little something for everyone.

LOCAL LIVING: 1 year

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

I love that we have created not one but two very different experiences right next door to one another. Mission Pacific is designed as a “sanctuary by the ocean,” and The Seabird is a “timeless seaside estate.” Both properties feature elevated offerings right off the Southern California coast within an original beach town community.

“When it comes to sunsets, Oceanside has some of the best. Take a walk down the pier as the surfers do their thing, and watch as the sky turns from blue to orange!”

IN ALL ITS GLORY

Ò In San Diego, we live our lives outside more than in any other community I can think of. Most of my greatest memories have all taken place in environments that are so scenic, so memorable and so San Diego. When I tell people that I live here, I typically receive a response like, “OMG, I love San Diego!” It makes me very proud to be a part of our community that is legitimately the envy of everyone. 138 LOCALE MAGAZINE

GIVE ME LIBERTY

Ò Liberty Station is mine and my wife’s favorite spot. We enjoy walking, shopping and dining with so many options in this unique and special neighborhood. Liberty Station also puts on so many great outdoor events throughout the year in its many venues. You might find us at Stone Brewing, Ikiru Sushi or at Liberty Public Market! www.libertystation.com

A SLICE OF HEAVEN

Ò We enjoy everything about The Privateer in South Oceanside and find ourselves there at least once a week. They have a great wine selection, awesome craft beers, incredible service and the best pizza in North County. The Privateer boasts a rustic, laid-back vibe that totally fits the Oceanside community. www.theprivateercoalfirepizza.com

EASY STREET

Ò I always enjoy authentic experiences, and Convoy St is exactly that. One of the highlights for me in this district is Dumpling Inn and Shanghai Saloon. But explore the whole district and you’ll discover some of San Diego’s most memorable food experiences. Pro tips: go hungry and avoid peak dining times, as you will not be alone. www.dumplinginn.com

MID-MOD MECCA FROM TOURS TO AUCTIONS, HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MODERNISM WEEK FALL PREVIEW

WRITTEN BY: REX LEE SEARCEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: MODERNISM WEEK

Modernism is a design style that features simplicity, clean lines, modern materials, open floor plans and a connection with the surrounding landscape. This was the perfect style for the desert environment of Palm Springs while it was being developed in the 1930s-’60s when celebrities from the Los Angeles area enjoyed this desert getaway. Many structures designed by famous architects of the time are preserved, and current designers are maintaining the tradition. Modernism Week is a celebration of this style and features numerous events for visitors to enjoy. Here’s an inside look at three must-do events at Modernism Week’s annual Fall Preview!

IN TODAY’S AGE, MODERNISM WEEK IS A CELEBRATION OF THIS STYLE AND FEATURES NUMEROUS EVENTS FOR VISITORS TO ENJOY.

FEATURED DESIGN PROJECTS

O

One of the highlights of Modernism Week is touring exclusive properties. During Fall Preview, check out the Featured Design Project Tour: Limón, a colorful seven-bedroom property that was recently renovated by H3K Home & Design. It was transformed into a holiday landing place that can accommodate

144

LOCALE MAGAZINE

14 guests in separate suites that surround a swimming pool. An allsteel structure, Limón is one of the most unique buildings in Palm Springs and features a large communal kitchen outfitted with state-ofthe-art appliances and international decor. The design was inspired by the optimistic era and continental graphics of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Palm Springs

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME • During Modernism Week’s Fall Preview, you won’t want to miss the walking tour of Twin Palms, which is recognized as the first full modernist neighborhood in the area and includes the Frank Sinatra home. Being offered for the first time this year, it features homes designed by several notable architects. Other tours include the stunning James Logan Abernathy home, a walking tour of the El Dorado Palms neighborhood in Indian Wells and the 2.5hour double-decker, architectural bus tour of notable commercial and residential buildings in Palm Springs.

BUY, BUY, BUY! • For those who are inspired to bring the modernism style into their own lives, be sure to attend the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale. Held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Oct. 15-17, this event will feature 50 premier national exhibitors offering vintage and limited-edition items. An Opening Night Party and Buying Preview will be held the evening of Oct. 15 for those who want cocktails and a first crack at the items for sale before the general public.

A Unique Identity • The modernist designs in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley are unique to the area. Often called desert modernism, they are designed to integrate smoothly into the desert environment and adapt to its climate. Bring Home History • Love that midcentury fashion? At the Curated Vintage Event on Oct. 16, you’ll find vintage, rare, iconic and authentic apparel, textiles, jewelry and accessories to satisfy your deepest desires. For Obscure Trivia Lovers • At Best of Mod With a TWIST, held on three days (Oct. 14-16) at the exceptional home L’Apparita, you’ll enjoy a lighthearted but deep dive into some of the more obscure topics of the midcentury era.

The Dreamy Mexico Destination That Needs to Be on Your Bucket List WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ERIK HALE

» Lately, you cannot browse Instagram without feeling like everyone you know is in Tulum—either drinking rosé on the beach or trying out the dances they learned on TikTok at jungle discos under a full moon. Mexico is the mosttraveled destination from the United States, and for many visitors, the sheltered experience of an allinclusive resort in Cancun is their idea of Mexico. But there’s so much more to explore. Once a hidden gem, the accessibility of this destination and allure of a cross-pollination of Mexican and Venice Beach cultures is no longer just for the well-traveled. After personally visiting Tulum six times recently, these are the must-stay, play and slay places that should be on your highly organized friend’s list of what to do once you arrive in Tulum. » This darling of Instagram is a beachside eco treetop resort. If Tarzan had hired John Lautner and told him to use sticks instead of concrete, this might be the result. Our suite was accessed by a rope bridge, possessed a private tiled pool with an accompanying swing and only had a single outlet. Candlelight was the only way to get undressed, and the sun was the morning alarm. Unplugging is both overtly and directly encouraged here. Our favorite feature was writing a note for requests, putting the note inside a wooden ball and then depositing it in a bamboo mail delivery service that sent it careening though some unseen maze to the staff. The on-site spa’s design is magnificent—unlike anything we had ever seen. They offer yoga, chakra harmonization and a series of massages at the spa or in your very own room. www.azulik.com

Hideaway

Midcentury Meets California Cowboy at This Reimagined Motel in Cuyama Valley WRITTEN BY: KERI BRIDGWATER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: CUYAMA BUCKHORN When designbuild team Ferial Sadeghian and Jeff Vance first laid eyes on this iconic roadside resort in New Cuyama, they knew they had found something special. Designed in 1952 by George Vernon Russell—the architect behind the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas—the Cuyama Buckhorn had good midcentury-modern bones but needed a lot of love. Now completely restored and restyled to incorporate gorgeous outdoor spaces and a ‘Gram-worthy pool, the 21-room high desert retreat is putting this soon-to-bediscovered destination in northern Santa Barbara County on the weekend getaway map. With hiking and horseback riding in the nearby Los Padres National Forest to go with wineries, a wildlife refuge for California condors and the Carrizo Plain National Monument to explore, for a stylish stay in the “Hidden Valley of Enchantment,” look no further. Rooms are decked out with cowhide rugs and vintage cowboy hats, plus a new-school mini bar called the Golden State Goodies box. Outside, there’s a bocce

ball court, barrel sauna and cozy seating areas to toast s’mores beside the fire while catching a sunset over the Caliente Mountains. Beyond swoon-worthy design digs, Sadeghian and Vance have made the Buckhorn a must-visit for food lovers, too, thanks to culinary and community-focused workshops and hyper-local eatery, The Buckhorn Restaurant. Helmed by Executive Chef Daniel Horn, produce from small-scale farms and ranches in Cuyama Valley shines across dishes, including the signature Santa Maria-style tri-tip sandwich smoked on red oak. Belly up for drinks at The Buckhorn Bar (or have them delivered poolside) and sip your way through Bar Manager Brandon Gomez’s cocktail list that showcases small-batch spirits and housemade bitters. Before heading home, load up on local items like Rock Front Ranch Honey, a bottle of Cuyama Beverage Co. JuJu-Bee Mead or Pedro Ximénez from Condor’s Hope Vineyard. Skip the crowded desert destinations this year and head to Cuyama Buckhorn for the perfect mix of off-the-grid relaxation and trendy accommodations.

 Bringin’ the Heat •Before you take a dip in the pool, be sure to pop in the hotel’s barrel sauna for a quick sweat sesh!

 What’s in a Name? •The name Cuyama comes from an Indian village named for the Chumash word kuyam and means both clamshell, for the fossilized oyster shells found embedded in the ground throughout the valley, and place of rest. Decorated in History •Once called “The Safari Room,” the back dining room was allegedly home to a giraffe head. Not much is known about the lobby bear, but deer heads in The Buckhorn Bar were all landed by legendary local Lamar Johnston.

 Myths Busted •How could a motel “in the middle of nowhere” possibly be luxurious? We hear you. But this enchanting retreat simply pulls it off. Each room features a semiprivate patio, soft Brooklinen towels, bath products from eco-friendly LA company, Further and a mini bar stocked with locally made booze and snacks.

Rooms are decked out with cowhide rugs and vintage cowboy hats, plus a new-school mini bar called the Golden State Goodies box.

 Keep an Eye Out •Cattle-branding symbols from ranches across Cuyama Valley are featured throughout the property— from wooden guest bathroom vanities to the wall outside The Buck Stop coffee shop and Buckhorn Market.

ARE YOU A

PERSON?

THIS MEMBERS-ONLY CLUB ALLOWS YOU TO FLY PRIVATE AT A FRACTION OF THE COST OF COMMERCIAL

H

Have you always thought that flying private was only for the elite? Like us, you probably believed every one of those flights was boarded by a billionaire hedge fund manager, trust fund-milking kid or a budding and connected Instagram influencer. Several aviation companies have emerged that are attempting to shatter that myth. Set Jet is a membership-based flight service that offers private flights on the west coast to LA, San Diego, Orange County, Scottsdale, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Cabo San Lucas.

CHECK, PLEASE » When I fly, there is normally a gnawing sense of dread that I will somehow miss my flight. We checked into Set Jet at the private LAX terminal for our two-hour trip to Cabo San Lucas only 30 minutes before our flight, and they told us we were early! We were greeted at the door by the valet, who took our luggage and escorted us into the luxurious private air lounge. Our gate agent checked us in, and moments later, we were escorted to the plane without having to pass through TSA checkpoints. not. While we were told by the pilot that flights are often more full than we experienced, on each of our roundtrip legs, there was only one other passenger. The sparsity of the occupancy on our flight to Cabo in conjunction with the luxuriousness of picking two of 14 open, reclining and swiveling plush leather seats made this flight feel truly private.

We were greeted at the door by the valet, who took our luggage and escorted us into the luxurious private air lounge.

POOCHES + CHAMPERS

» Commercial flights seem

to be set on diluting their customer service in favor of profits as they enact more and more baggage rules, sharply mandate that you “raise your tray before takeoff” and even cancel peanuts and canned sodas on short flights. Set Jet is taking the opposite approach. On Set Jet, you can bring your puppy, enjoy pre- and in-flight Veuve Clicquot and munch on as many snacks as you want.

 Join the Club » Members pay a monthly fee of $99 to enroll in the club, which grants them access to one of two Bombardier CRJ200 aircrafts, both of which have been converted from the 50-plusseat configuration typically found to an ultra-luxurious 15- to 19-seat VIP cabin.

 Clean as Can Be » Set Jet was the first private jet charter company to provide free COVID-19 antibody indicator testing upon request from members prior to flights. They employ a Decon 7 cleaning system—the same used for cleaning ambulances and nuclear spills.

 Livin’ the Dream

» They have a private VIP

lounge and free valet. The staff is gracious, thoughtful and patient. You truly feel like you own the plane you are flying on.

CABO TO KITCHEN PACKAGE » Hilton Los Cabos’ new Cabo to Kitchen package offers a twohour cooking class and private dinner with Executive Chef Mauricio Lopez. Guests are guided to his vertical garden to hand-pick aromatic herbs and search for Baja’s “chocolate clams” (aka “Baja’s seafood candy”). He then prepares a beautiful dining experience under the stars, starting with a traditional fish and clam ceviche made with la talla octopus over a roaring wood and coal bonfire.

ENCLAVE BEACH CLUB » The newly opened Enclave Beach Club is outfitted with an energetic rum-centric bar, four private cliffside bungalows, DJs, eight oceanfront cabanas and sunken fire pits for nighttime relaxation. We enjoyed one of the private cliffside elevated bungalows that allowed us to soak up the sun, relax in the shade, take in views of the Sea of Cortez, sip margaritas and relax in the in-deck rope lounge.

The anticipation of a vacation is amplified by what you can expect to experience. Oftentimes, the anticipation outweighs the experience. As we prepared for our trip to Cabo San Lucas, we read about Plunge Pool Suites, elevated beachside cabanas, fireside s’mores and a “floating breakfast” at our final destination. The Hilton Los Cabos Golf & Beach Resort had undergone a multimillion-dollar renovation, and we were prepared to love it. Spoiler alert: we did.

Walking into the room, the view of the Sea of Cortez and palm trees reflecting in our private plunge pool made us instantly feel like vacation had started. their food and create conversation with a group of strangers, founder Jim Denevan says, “I dreamed of having an environment where the deeper story about where our food comes from could be told.” Denevan was inspired by his older brother’s work as an organic farmer, and he soon realized how incredibly interesting the work of agriculture was. Outstanding in the Field was born in 1999 to create this one-of-akind dining experience situated outdoors in nature. Denevan hopes guests gain a different perspective on food after attending an OITF dinner. “[My goal is] for people to look at things differently when they’re at the grocery store, and to support farmers and chefs and the whole ecosystem of people working with each other,” he says. Marketplace and Andy Huynh of Full Steam Dumpling. “Finding venues and local chefs is one of the most fun parts of the job,” Denevan explains. The relationship among the farmers, chefs and land of each event is what ends up making each dinner so special. After a year-long hiatus in 2020, Denevan says, “It’s fantastic to be in a place where people are celebrating getting back together; we’re outside, and it’s a fantastic environment that has emerged from a time of separation.” Whether you’re searching for an exquisite meal or craving that authentic community connection (with strangers or close friends), Outstanding in the Field provides a memorable experience.
