elcome to the 3rd edition of Spotlight Magazine, the upbeat guide to what’s on in South Queensferry, Kirkliston, Dalmeny and Newton.

We also cover the Rotary Club of South Queensferry’s annual photography competition and the pioneering Dementia research at the Memory Lab at Heriot Watt. In addition we celebrate St Margaret’s RC Primary School’s 60th anniversary.

St Margarets’ RC Primary School Turns 60! S .

t Margaret’s RC Primary School first opened its doors in 1959, so pupils and staff, past and present, are celebrating the 60th anniversary this year. A number of events are planned, not least of which is the presentation of a specially commissioned painting of St Margaret (pictured) and the publication of a yearbook at the end of the term.

However, before moving to work in St Margaret’s and The Ferry I did not appreciate fully the sense of togetherness there is here within the school, its relationship with the other local schools in the area and its relationship with the wider community. Further I have been struck by the feeling of something more than a community, that of a real sense that The Ferry feels more like a family, one another willing to help each other, support each other, stop in the street and talk to one another and offer genuine friendships.

The book will be featured in the next issue of Spotlight, in the meantime, a foreword by acting headteacher, Mr Martin McCann:

It is this feeling I am going to miss most when I leave, although one I look forward to experiencing whenever I return."

Can you help with local dementia research? research at Heriot-Watt University, near Currie. Dr Craig explained, “Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of conditions that affect the brain. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 2/3 cases. Problems in memory are often one of the first signs of Alzheimer’s Disease and these memory problems can impact a person’s independence and wellbeing. It is therefore important that we understand the causes of these memory problems”. Through their innovative research, the Memory Lab have shown that a very basic technique can help the memory of people with and without Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr Craig continued “Research from our lab shows that if we quietly rest for several minutes immediately after learning something new, it is likely that we will remember more of what we have learned. The key is to rest quietly. If we busy ourselves with something else immediately afterwards, then our ability to remember learned information is reduced”. The team have found that quiet rest modestly benefits healthy minds, but the benefit is particularly strong for people with Alzheimer’s Disease.

esearchers at Heriot-Watt University’s pioneering Memory Lab are looking for male and female volunteers aged 60 years and over to help with a study investigating how memory changes normally with ageing and differently in people affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. Study leader, Dr Michael Craig, is carrying out the Alzheimer’s Society funded 12

To further research this hypothesis, Dr Craig is using a safe and non-invasive brain activity recording method called electroencephalography, better known as EEG, to record brain activity as people complete a memory test. This involves the volunteer wearing a snug-fitting cap that contains lots of electrodes. These electrodes can record tiny changes in the electrical activity of the brain. Dr Craig commented, “When a new memory is formed, it is fragile. For fragile new memories to be retained over the longer term, they must be processed by the brain. We think that quiet rest benefits memory because it supports the processing of new memories”. Dr Craig and his colleagues at the Memory Lab are now investigating how the processing of new memories by the brain changes normally in older age and abnormally in Alzheimer’s Disease. They are hopeful that this research can lead to new diagnostic tools and interventions to help people retain their memories and make new ones.

South Queensferry Foodbank Seeks Volunteers Give Your Time to Local People in Need

he South Queensferry Foodbank, operated by Edinburgh Food Project, believes that nobody in South Queensferry and the surrounding areas should go hungry. People referred to the foodbank are given three days worth of nutritionally balanced food, as well as support. The Edinburgh Food Project is part of the Trussell Trust network of foodbanks across the UK. This worthy project is looking for new volunteers, who want to get involved with providing food and support to their local community. Their recent volunteering day attracted a lot of interest but the South Queensferry foodbank still needs people to volunteer their time so that the service can keep on helping local people in need. Whether you can spare a couple of hours a week, or a couple of hours a month, all help is much appreciated. Volunteering is a great way to add experience to your CV, or meet new people, and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are always appreciated by the foodbank.

Local Photographers Snap up Awards Rotary Club of South Queensferry Photographic Competition The Rotary Club of South Queensferry recently celebrated their 12th annual Photographic Competition. On Thursday 25th April, members of the club accompanied by partners and guests got together at the Hawes Inn to judge the competition. The photographs shown were taken by Rotary Club members, their families and artistically minded friends. The first Rotary Club photography competition was held in 2007, and has become a popular feature of the Clubâ€™s yearly event calendar. Each year Club members and their friends and family are invited to enter photos related to a theme, that changes every year. This stunning photo was submitted by Martin Prentice back in 2016 a worthy winner

In 2017 this Historic shot of the Rotary Raft Race received First Prize Photo by Jason Roseweir.

Timely Themes The topic this year was â€œTimeâ€? which was set by the well known local photographer, Alistair Pryde, who is the proprietor of Words and Pictures on Queensferry High Street. Judging too has changed over the years, with the first ever judge being Cameron McVean, Road Safety Officer with Lothian and Borders Police. After that voting was done by the attending audience, with prizes given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. 25

Since 2015, Alistair has set the theme and judged the competition. In addition, Alistair has run photographic workshops which some of our more artistically minded members have benefited greatly from. The winner of the 1st prize always receives the Robert Cleland Quaich. Robert, who passed away several years ago, had a keen

We meet every Thursday at 6.45pm in the historic Hawes Inn beside the Forth Rail Bridge. All Rotarians and guests are sure of a warm welcome interest in the arts. His memory lives on in the memorial quaich kindly donated by his family.

2019 Prize Winners In first place this year was Lisa Falconer with “Young and Not-so Young” who received the Quaich and a framed print donated by Alistair Pryde. In second place came 'Time Traveller' by Sarah Brownless and Kathrin McAllister came in third place with 'Turn Back Time'. The entrance fee and proceeds of the night’s raffle were donated to the charity Freedom from Fistula, and the sum raised was doubled by match funding from Rotary Foundation District 1020.

CleanFerry Cleans Up The Ferry C

leanFerry are a local group of over 30 community minded volunteers who spend their spare time cleaning up litter hotspots in and around South Queensferry. They started with just 5 volunteers in April 2016 and since then have undertaken many clean-up ventures around The Ferry.

Their last clean up on April 8th saw 14 locals turn up to tackle a big community clean-up, which was the biggest ever. One particularly jungle like area was opposite the Haven, behind Rosebery Avenue. The bramble filled spot was filled with everything from a baby bath to a car battery, metal framing and lotâ€™s of timber, which would have been a danger to local children. Chris, David McG and Ernie cleared the space for local residents

to turn into what could be an attractive, safe space for children to play in. Other CleanFerry volunteers including Neil, Fiona C., Dave M., & David G got to grips with a large area around Hill Court, which included West Terrace and gardens. They cleared up lots of litter including bottles, cigarette ends and general trash. Plans are already being made to carry out further clean-ups of this area in the summer.

Town Litter Spots Tidied The space around the Scotmid Recycling area was tackled by Fiona Mac., Ian, Vic and our new volunteer Elaine. They even used a long litter picker to clean up out of the way rubbish. Robin and 30

Nigel cleared up all the litter from Viewforth Place, under the Road Bridge and around the Cemetery. David H tidied around Plewlands House, and has made plans to contact the long term resident to arrange another visit. This was one of CleanFerry’s best-attended litter outings, with 17 bags of rubbish collected in total. In addition to working with regular volunteers, Clean Ferry has also been supporting a local guy to get his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Sol C approached CleanFerry in 2018 to help reduce waste and protect the local environment. He was given his own litter trail to keep clear on a weekly basis; this included a safety inspection check so he could be given the correct materials such as a high vis jacket and gloves. Between January and April this year, Sol managed to clean up two sacks of rubbish per week, a phenomenal result from this young man. The clean up of The Ferry doesn’t stop here however, as in June CleanFerry are running some fun initiatives to get local adults and children involved in keeping community spaces clean. This includes:

• Saturday 1st June, Family litter collection @ 10.00 Meet at the new Hawthorn Bank community garden for a local litter clean then return for snacks, coffee, tea about 11:30. This annual event run in partnership with CleanFerry and Wind & Cloud Travel enables local people of all ages to get together, clean up and then enjoy some well deserved social time together, with a children’s play area, so it’s a nice morning event to take the kids to. • Thursday 20th June @ 13.15 Meet at Dalmeny Primary School 13.05 for local litter clean with the schoolchildren, to educate them about the importance of caring for their environment. • Friday 28th June @ 19.00 clean up, meeting at Hawes Pier then a BBQ at 20.30. This tidy up is in collaboration with CleanFerry and local Scouts to keep the beach clean. • In July, there will be regular CleanFerry community clean-ups every Monday. Gardening Scotland Celebrates 20 Years

ardening Scotland celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and everyone is welcome to join in the celebrations at the Royal Highland Centre. Scotlandâ€™s national festival of plants and outdoor living is showing from Friday, 31st May until Sunday the 2nd of June with a focus this year on creating the perfect outdoor space. This means that visitors can expect to see design presentations on how to turn your garden into a stylish, yet welcoming outdoor room. There will be plenty of ideas about what plants to use and also on new trends in garden furniture and accessories.

Gardening Scotland was started in 1999 by volunteers called who wanted to set up a festival based around horticulture and the art of plant growing. Now it is run by Rural Projects on behalf of Gardening Scotland. It became a charity with the aim of assisting other people to enhance and enjoy their green spaces, be it a garden, allotment or even a window box. The volunteers felt that gardening was a great way to connect with the environment and improve mental health by switching off from day to day stressors.

Gardening Scotland is an opportunity for anyone from South Queensferry or Kirkliston to visit the nearby Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston and get in touch with nature. Visitors can learn all about creating and maintaining a garden or small green space such as a terrace or window box. But the event is not purely about gardens; there are many other attractions that people of all ages can enjoy. Some of the features at the festival this year include the Plant Pavilion and Show Gardens, Bonsai and Botanical Art, special Gardening Scotland cocktails and of course high tea. In addition there will be around 400 exhibitors from all over the UK, a Food Fayre, a Plant Village, crafts and Garden4Life. Another popular event at the festival is a forum for plant and gardening advice as well as a plant crĂ¨che. The three-day event is expecting around 35,000 visitors this year. For anyone interested in horticulture, Gardening Scotland should be as much a part of the plant calendar as the Chelsea Flower Show.
