Magazine, we want to tell you all about local events, projects and interesting people doing great things for the community. Christmas and New Year may be distant memories, but there is always something going on in the local area.

Queensferry High Street Public Realm Design Project Update T he Queensferry High Street Project Steering Group want to re-establish the Town as a high quality heritage destination that serves its residents and encourages increased use.

Over 2018 a series of consultations were held at the CEC South Queensferry Local Office & Registrar building and a design proposal has been formed.
The original brief stated “the Queensferry High Street Project Steering Group wants to re-establish the Town as a high quality heritage destination which serves its residents and encourages increased use. The project will develop proposals for the High Street, reinforcing it as the heart of Queensferry and improving connections within the town that can make
it more attractive, safe and appealing to both residents and visitors.” Now that the design proposal has been presented, the principles are described as having been informed by participants in the consultation process and have guided the design development process itself.

Keith Giblett, chairman of The Queensferry and District Community Council said, “Following the three public consultations in 2018 the proposals are now expected to be finalised and presented in February 2019. We expect the main stakeholders of this project to meet very soon

CleanFerry: Keeping the Area Tidy Sol started off by cleaning up after a party in Inchcolm Park, and went on to clean up litter from around the Varney Estate and the old Motel site. In addition he cleaned up litter and debris from the Hopetoun Road and Shore Road area. This marks another successful year for CleanFerry and its fantastic team of committed volunteers. As well as volunteers, CleanFerry is urging residents and schools of Queensferry to ‘Just Bin It’. We want to make 2019 the year when everyone in the local area becomes litter aware and supports us to make a CleanFerry.

leanFerry aims to conserve the environment around South Queensferry, all year round, regardless of snow or rain. This winter, a new recruit from Queensferry High School joined the CleanFerry team. Sol, a third year student, is participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award so needed to volunteer with a local project for at least an hour per week. He was drawn to volunteering for CleanFerry because he wanted to help the environment and felt that it was important to help keep his local area clean. As part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, he needed to have an assessor confirm his involvement and achievement, which David from CleanFerry was more than happy to do. 14

Building the New High School
C
onstruction of the new Queensferry High School is ongoing, and readers who have passed the site recently will no doubt have seen the progress for themselves. This is a City of Edinburgh Council project, delivered in partnership with Hub South East, with Morrison Construction appointed as the main contractor. The project remains on track to complete in March 2020.

Young Musicians Hit a High Note at Dalmeny Church Rotary Club Young Musician Contest
T
he Rotary Club of South Queensferry held their annual Young Musician contest on the evening of the 14th January at Dalmeny Church. It was a fantastic event, with skilled local young people sharing their musical talent and competing for prizes. The standard was extremely high this year, but local girl Megan Lees won 1st for voice, with Laurie Whike winning 1st for cornet. Dalmeny Parish Church was a worthy venue, with acoustics that really brought out the best in every performance. The facilities for tea and biscuits after were much appreciated by all the contestants and guests. With standards this high, South Queensferry can be assured of a musical future.

The Queensferry Memorial Pipes & Drums
The Queensferry Memorial Pipes & Drums has long standing links to the South Queensferry area with members coming from The Queensferry Caledonia & Queensferry & District Clan Albannach pipe bands. We first got together for a one off appearance at the Ferry Fair to honour past members who are no longer with us. These included local characters such as John Armstrong, Owen Butler, Jimmy Orr, Bill Heatlie, Craig Purves, Chris Bell and Ian Whyte. Friends from other local bands joined us in this celebration, & the event was such a success that we were encouraged to keep the band going. One musician there was The Pipe Major of the Army Cadet Pipes & Drums in the Edinburgh Area, who was instrumental in allowing us to hold weekly practice sessions at the Army Cadet premises on Rosebery Avenue every Wednesday evening.
This included taking on any cadet who was keen to learn piping and drumming. Since then our pipe band has been busy running a Crowdfunder Appeal to raise money for uniforms & musical instruments. Tesco staff organised a hamper raffle and included us in the Tesco Bags for Help scheme to support us. In 2019, we are recruiting new members from P6 age upwards & are planning more fund raising events for our band to get it to competition level for 2020.

Upgrading the street lights across Edinburgh – look out for your new lights in April and May
M
any of Edinburgh’s street lights are no longer made and can’t be maintained. So, the City of Edinburgh Council is upgrading them to energy efficient ones which are better for the environment, cheaper to run, give off a clearer light and can make streets feel safer at night.
and clearer than the more orange light we’re used to, but it’s not a blue light. There’s also less light spill, lighting up roads and pavements better, rather than escaping upwards or shining into people’s homes or gardens.
Making our streets feel safer at night
We’re also putting in a new street lighting control system at the same time. This will help us identify faulty lights quicker and without people needing to report them.

The work began last October and is going well. We plan to upgrade the lights in the Almond Ward which includes Queensferry, Kirkliston, Newbridge, Ratho, Cramond and Ingliston in April and May. It should only take around 15 minutes to replace each light and since the street lighting columns aren’t generally being replaced, the work shouldn’t cause people any disruption.
Better for the environment • use 60% less energy and reduce the Council’s carbon footprint • reduce light pollution and providing a better environment for birds and wildlife • no ultraviolet light reducing the attraction of night time insects • almost 100% recyclable and don’t contain any harmful substances
Trees/hedges Before we start we are checking the lighting columns to make sure there is a clear space around the column and the light. If there isn’t we will write to people asking them to cut back trees or hedges.
