How to Have a Sustainable Christmas Enjoy Christmas and the Environment
I
n the run up to Christmas it can be easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff, gifts, decorations, wrapping paper and food. If you are on a budget or concerned about the impact of the Christmas festivities on the environment then why not cut out the clutter and have a sustainable Christmas? Everyone loves giving and receiving gifts at Christmas, but you can still have a wonderful holiday without breaking the bank or buying a lot of useless items that will be broken or forgotten by the start if the new year. If you love the idea of a lot less crap at Christmas, Spotlight Magazine have a few tips to help you get it right.

1. Buy Less Stuff The first place to start is by just making the decision to buy less physical stuff for people. It does not mean that you have to turn into Scrooge, just get more creative with your gift giving. Instead of buying things, why not treat your family and friends to experiences that they can enjoy. This can include going to a restaurant, cinema and theatre tickets or memberships to art galleries or museums. You can even buy special activity packages where people can learn everything from stand up comedy to how to skydive, or cook Italian food.
2. Buy Vintage Gifts Charity shops can be a great way to buy presents on a budget or when you want to recycle goods. You can buy everything from toiletries to cheesy Christmas sweaters and stocking fillers. If you want to splurge a bit more, check out eBay, it has everything from designer clothing to dolls houses and artwork.
3. Make Your Own Gifts If you have a talent for something creative, why not make your own Christmas gifts? If you are great at knitting, knit warm hats or jumpers for people, or if baking is more your thing, nobody is going to be unhappy with a home baked cake or a tin full of cookies.
4. Buy Locally Save on air miles by buying locally instead of buying goods that have been flown in and may not have been ethically made. When you buy from a local business, you are not only supporting the local economy but encouraging small businesses to stay rather than large chain stores.
5. Buy Ethically When you buy gifts for Christmas or food and drinks for the festivities try and buy organic, fair-trade products that are plastic free and sustainable. Use your Christmas pound to make a point about how you want the world to be.
6. Use Recyclable Wrapping Paper Instead of using throw away metallic paper, think about wrapping gifts in upcycled fabric or old maps for an interesting, original way that can be reused.
A Few Sobering Facts About Christmas Clutter: Only 1% of the gifts bought at Christmas are still used after 6 months. 227,000 miles of wrapping paper is used every Christmas in the UK, this translates to enough paper to wrap around the world a whopping 9 times! 74 million mince pies that end up in the bin, as well as over a billion Christmas cards. 13

Christmas Decor Christmas is a time of the year where families get together for good food, festive drinks and of course great company. Decorating your home or table at this time of year can create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that will help everyone relax and get into the festive spirit. If it is your turn to host this Christmas time, Spotlight Magazine has some tips to creating elegant seasonal décor for your home or even your business. Completely Natural Being conscious of the environment has been big news this year, you can reuse found objects and use natural colours to create cost effective, environmentally aware festive décor. Dried flowers have been on trend this year, and can be blended with items such as holly branches and pinecones for an interesting yet natural look. If you combine this using long lasting wooden decorations and a real Christmas tree that can be planted after the festive season, you can enjoy Christmas 2019 with as little waste as possible.

Create a tactile effect by mixing different textures, including coloured felts, pinecones, wooden decorations such as stars and animals and simple red and white or blue and white painted crockery, for a rustic, Scandinavian look. 3. Fit for an Ice Queen
Feel inspired by nature and use the visual elements of a forest in winter for your Christmas designs. Use a combination of snow white flowers, evergreen branches and holly berries, or play around with plants in moss or lichen green, or pale blues, even spray branches silver for a really striking look. groups, local families and local businesses to make sure that the shore was kept looking beautiful, and something for everyone in and around South Queensferry to feel proud of. Clean Ferry also worked alongside students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards from Queensferry High School.
outh Queensferry is full of committed, community minded people but Spotlight Magazine wants to highlight the amazing work that has been done by Clean Ferry throughout the past year. The clean up crew work hard to clean and maintain community spaces in and around South Queensferry. They work in partnership with local schools and businesses including McDonald’s, Dalmeny Primary School, Wind & Cloud Travel, Scotmid and local Scouts to undertake challenging tidy up projects to keep the community shared spaces looking clean, tidy and above all, safe for children to play in.
This ability to form working partnerships with a diverse group of local people of all ages and abilities enables them to learn about sustainability and the importance of keeping the environment clean. This year has been so positive for Clean Ferry and the wider community that next year they want to build on their success, and attract more volunteers. In addition they want to share their message about creating a sustainable future, something that everyone can learn from. If you know where there is a lot of litter, why not contact the group to let them know, and lend a helping hand.
Clean Ferry in their current incarnation started off in 2016, and have gone from strength to strength, with over 30 volunteers currently helping to keep town and shore tidy and free of unsightly rubbish. They worked all summer with youth 20

Rotary International and Hopet o Project Trust Supported by the Rotary Club of South Queensferry
T
he Rotary Club of South Queensferry has been kept busy recently, with not one but two landmark projects. On Thursday the 24th of October buildings and landmarks around the world were floodlit in purple to honour End Polio Now, the worldwide campaign to eradicate the disease. This included Hopetoun House and Queensferry Parish Church.
funded by Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have succeeded in reducing incidences of the disease by 99.99%. Polio mainly affects children under five. There is no cure, but it is preventable with a vaccine. The purple theme was inspired by the purple dye put on the pinkies of children who have been vaccinated. The programme has been so successful that polio is now endemic only in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. In 2018 only 21 new cases were reported in Afghanistan and 12 in Pakistan. For the second year running there were no new cases reported in Nigeria. Bill Gates has stated that the progress in fighting polio has been one of the best-kept secrets in world health.

So as well as raising almost £667 for End Polio Now, which will be tripled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in spring, the flowering purple plants will be a colourful reminder of this worthwhile programme.
Project Trust In addition to the End Polio Now project the Rotary Club of South Queensferry contributed financially to support two local girls, Amy Rankin and Laura Marnie

All volunteers are sent alongside another volunteer for support and companionship. Amy taught English at a private school in India. She stayed in the school hostel along with many of the school’s students and another Project Trust volunteer and taught classes ranging from kindergarten to thirteen year olds. In addition Amy started a dance class with the other volunteer, which proved popular with both girls and boys. While she was in India she celebrated Hindu festivals Diwali and Holi as well as Christmas at the school. She is now studying psychology at Glasgow University.

Lauren taught in various government schools in Phana, which is a small town in the North East of Thailand. She taught children from nursery age up to senior year at primary school. While teaching in a Buddhist culture was a new experience, Lauren made good friends locally and with her fellow volunteer. She is now studying environmental science at Edinburgh University, in addition to talking to primary schools about global citizenship. South Queensferry Ex-service Club Remembrance Day Parade
T
he past weekend saw South Queensferry, along with the rest of the world observe Remembrance Day. This yearly commemoration marks the great sacrifices of the armed forces and civilians in times of war. Sunday saw two minutes of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month; this was when the First World War ended in 1918 between the Allied Forces and Germany. Hundreds of poppies and wreaths were laid in and around South Queensferry to mark the 101st year after this event, which changed history.

he parade started at 10am on South Queensferry High Street, past the Rosebery Hall War Memorial then up the Loan to the Church of Scotland, and was attended by many local people and members past and present of the Armed Forces. Spotlight Magazine want to join in by paying our respects to the members of the Armed Forces and civilians who are affected by war. Remembrance Sunday comes at the end of the annual Scottish Poppy Appeal, the charity which raises money for veterans in need.

Fundraising Going Ahead for the Priory Church Community Garden Project
T
he Priory Church of St Mary of Mount Carmel, more commonly known as the Priory Church, is a Scottish Episcopal church on the banks of the Firth of Forth in South Queensferry. The church dates back to the 15th Century when it was built for the Carmelite Order. Now it is the only medieval Carmelite church that is still in use in the UK, as well as being a category A listed building. The Priory Church Garden was the original location for the cloisters of the Carmelite Friars, but has fallen into disrepair. The site until recently had two portacabins, where the church used to run activities for children as well as a foodbank, but due to damp, issues with rats and eventually a collapsed ceiling, the portacabins had to be closed, and the foodbank moved inside the church.
The new building will provide: • Access for all • Kitchen with serving hatch • Storage for the Foodbank • Meeting space for Fresh Start, Housing Support and Health in Mind
Now the Priory Church is trying to raise money so that they can build a Community Garden facility, in the spot where the portacabins were situated. This Garden Room will have a small function room, as well as a kitchen with storage space for the Food Bank donations as well as two wheelchair accessible toilets. Architects have already come up with plans for an oak framed building with a flat roof with a glass skylight that will be an ideal meeting place for community groups. 40

t was shocking to see the BBC programme “Drowning in Plastic’, last year. Plastics are choking our rivers and seas and the additional problem of micro plastics, items such as glitter and cosmetics, packaging and teabags, are being ingested by marine life who mistake them for food. Ultimately, these plastics get into our food chain and some have been found in our bodies. Like many people I thought I was playing my part by recycling, but there is so much more we can do and if everyone joins in it can make a difference. By Rosie Johnson

I am passionate about sustainability and keeping the environment clean for the next generation. As a primary teacher I saw how children were encouraged to become ‘Responsible Citizens,’ through the new Curriculum for Excellence. Many nurseries and schools are involved in Recycling, Reusing and Reducing and gaining their Eco flags, which is fantastic. Other local groups are organising beach cleaning days.

I decided that there were other ways to involve children from an early age and wrote a children’s picture book called ‘Flo and Flip the Inchcolm seals’, based locally in South Queensferry by the Firth of the Forth. Although it is an engaging story with loveable characters, I also wanted to highlight environmental issues by giving a subtle message regarding plastics in the sea, that would help the reader; teachers, practitioners, parents , older siblings and carers could engage in meaningful conversations with the children asking specific questions on this subject. It is my hope to help our younger generation to become more aware of these issues and encourage them to take action through this life long learning.
