elcome back to the 5th edition of Spotlight Magazine, your friendly, local guide to what’s on in South Queensferry, Kirkliston, Dalmeny and Newton.
history of the upcoming Ferry Fair and a look at Kirkliston Kids Gala. We also met with Dalmeny Cars who are up for a national award. At Spotlight Magazine, we feel that this area has a lot to offer, and our what’s on guide shows you what events are happening over the summer months. We would like to take the time to wish everyone a great Ferry Fair, and we hope to catch up with The Burryman when he makes his rounds.
This edition we first of all want to say thanks for all the positive feedback about our rebranded magazine. Our latest edition is packed with great features about what is going on in the area. We take a look at what some of our local charities and volunteer groups have been doing. QUEENSFERRY ROTARY ABSEILMAKES
£1 MILLION Ten years of Rotary Forth Bridge Abseil tops £1,000,000 for charities. On Sunday 7th July the Rotary Forth Bridge abseil reached a milestone when it topped £1 million raised for charity over the event's ten-year history.
People of all ages dressed in colourful outfits abseiled from the bridge to the beach, watched by family, friends and other supporters. The weather was sunny, and everyone dropped to the beach around 5pm.
Originally conceived as an emergency stopgap when repairs to the Hawes Pier prevented holding the Rotary Club of South Queensferry's annual raft race, the Abseil was an immediate success, proving one of the most significant fundraisers in the district. The aim was to raise money for national charities as well as enable local Scottish charities to raise money.
Iconic Forth Bridge an Attraction for Charity Abseilers The iconic position of the Forth Rail Bridge, which now has World Heritage Site status, attracts people from all over Scotland, the UK and further afield keen not only to support charities but to experience the thrill of abseiling from one of the most recognised bridges in the world. The minimum sponsorship required to take part is £150, but most people raise much more, with some groups and individuals achieving several thousand pounds.
Local Charities Benefitting from the Rotary Abseil The beneficiaries this year were The Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity and Strathcarron Hospice. Each charity is adopted for two years and spaces are also made available for supporters to abseil on behalf of many other local and national charities. There was also a charity village in the grounds of the Hawes Inn where participants and spectators could find out more about the charities being supported.
Ian Heigh, Network Rail Senior Project Manager, who visited the event, congratulated the Rotary Club of South Queensferry for having achieved £1 million from Forth Bridge Abseils. He stated that Network Rail was delighted to make the 8
as DJs from K107 FM and Xpress photographers also join in to make sure that the Rotary Forth Bridge Abseil is not only an experience to remember but also an enjoyable way of contributing to charity.

Rotary Club of South Queensferry Awards Evening LOCAL HEROES GET RECOGNITION FOR SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

resident Sandy presented a Community Award to GreenFerry’s David Garner. As a founding member of the GreenFerry environmental group, and a founder and active supporter of the Friends of Ferry Glen and Back Braes team, David has greatly improved the Queensferry environment. The next Community Award went to Juliette Lee of Hawthorn Bank Walled Garden. By founding the GreenFerry Trust and leading the project to transform a derelict site in the historic centre of Queensferry into a garden and play area for the benefit of residents and visitors alike, Juliette had brought new life to a run-down and neglected area which has it’s open day on Saturday August the 17th. Past President Neil McKinlay nominated both candidates.
TOP ROTARY HONOUR GOES TO SEA CADET CO The Paul Harris Fellowship, one of Rotary’s highest honours, can be awarded

FELLOWSHIP FOR OUTSTANDING ROTARIAN On the final evening of his presidency, President Sandy Mackenzie had the pleasure of awarding a Paul Harris Fellowship, to a club member who has rendered exceptional service not only to Rotary but also to the local community. Proposer Stuart Ridge said that Past President Neil McKinlay richly deserved the fellowship. As vice-president and president, Neil had reformed and updated the club’s systems and structure to comply with current legislation. He had also greatly contributed to promoting Rotary’s support for young people through long-term involvement with Queensferry High School on several projects including arranging job fairs and mock interviews for senior pupils. Neil was also a keen supporter of Queensferry Sea Cadet unit for which he also arranged mock interviews. In the broader community, Neil has a deep commitment to the environment. He helped develop Ferry Glen as well as supporting CleanFerry. President Sandy said Neil was a most worthy recipient of the honour, a sentiment warmly endorsed by members and guests.

By contributing $1,000 to Rotary Foundation, a club may nominate a deserving recipient and this year the Rotary Club of South Queensferry was delighted to honour Lieutenant (SCC) Colin Butcher - commanding officer of the Sea Cadet unit based at Port Edgar, Queensferry. After his naval career ended due to ill health, Rotarian Grainger Falconer said that Colin devoted himself to running the Sea Cadet unit in Rosyth before taking over the Port Edgar unit. He also formed a new Royal Marines unit currently with sixteen members. For the past twelve years, the unit has received the prestigious Burgee Award, given only to the top 25% of the 425 Sea Cadet units across the UK. Colin is now updating premises at Port Edgar that will enable the unit to increase its numbers to one hundred. The benefit of the organisation on the lives of the young cadets and marines is unquestionable, with many going on to careers in the navy. The Paul Harris Fellowship marked Colin Butcher’s selfless commitment to the Sea Cadet Corps and improving the lives of many young people over the years.

n Saturday 29th June 2019, volunteers of the Edinburgh Rapid Relief Team together with Kirkliston’s local community filled over 30 bags of rubbish picked up off the streets of the Kirkliston area. This litter pick was organised by the RRT in conjunction with the Edinburgh Gospel Trust to help clear up the litter but also to inspire those people to eliminate litter now and for future generations. Covering the entire Kirkliston village for 2 hours with their black sacks and litter pickers collecting anything that didn’t belong on the streets. Daniel White, RRT Team Leader for this event said “We had over 40 enthusiastic volunteers who enjoyed clearing the surrounding areas of rubbish before joining us at the leisure centre for a well-deserved burger lunch. It was fantastic to see the community come together with a passion to arrest the growing problem of our parks and streets being blighted by litter. We care about the communities we live in and felt this was a fantastic cause for the RRT and Edinburgh Gospel Trust to get behind and support” Well done to all the volunteers involved, a very good day’s work! 18

he summer months bring many visitors to Queensferry and for those arriving in August they may well find the streets decorated with flags and bunting as the town prepares for the Annual Fair. The Ferry Fair Festival as it is called now has seen many changes over the years. Even the original date of the 25th July, as recorded in the proclamation from 1687 has been moved back to August. In the 1600’s the Baillies and Burgesses of the town would parade on Fair Day dressed in their finery, complete with swords and horse races
The story, from the files of Queensferry History Group, report that a ham used to be strung to the top of the pole as well as a bag of flour, so when you tried to grab the ham you got covered in flour. During wartime as there were no hams available due to rationing a duck was used instead.
would take place in the street. These events are now only a recorded memory as sword fighting and horse racing were taken over by sillier pleasures. The Greasy Pole used to be a popular event, drawing laughing onlookers from in and around South Queensferry. This photograph from our archive, dated 1947 shows the Greasy pole situated at Craw’s Close. The two men “up the pole” are John Bell and William McLucas. Also in the picture is “Tutti Frutti” dressed in the boiler suit at the left foreground with Alfie Cockburn, in the braces with his back to the camera. The policeman shown is Jimmy Mackie.
The Ferry Fair Festival programme has undergone big changes over the years. In 1933 it ran to 24 pages, with the only photographs being black and white images of the Ferry Fair Queen, Jean McBain and the Marchioness of Linlithgow, who crowned the Queen. In 2019 the Ferry Fair Festival programme features 97 pages jam-packed with images and articles about the local community’s involvement in the Ferry Fair. The programme also gives local businesses a chance to advertise, and as seen by this advert from 1933, the way businesses advertise has also changed over the years. What has never changed, and will never change is the enjoyment that locals and visitors feel when they celebrate the Ferry Fair Festival. It is a credit to the local community that this ancient festival is still growing and evolving. Queensferry History Group is a small, friendly group of local people who have a keen interest in researching and recording every aspect of local history. If you enjoy history and want to do more to keep local history alive, then why not join the History Group on Monday morning from 10am until 12 noon. Friday 9th The Burryman Tour The Burryman is a burr-covered character that only comes out for the Ferry Fair in South Queensferry. He is played by a strong, local youth, namely Andrew Taylor, who can bear the weight of the heavy plant covered costume all day. The day before the Fair he tours the town and pubs, having a dram of whisky in each bar. His 7-mile route is heralded by a town crier, and is well worth a watch. Sir Walter Scott famously spent a lot of time trying to find out the origins of The Burryman. Starts at 8:45am, South Queensferry
Sunday 4th until Saturday August 10th Ferry Fair Queensferry’s annual Fair was originally started in 1687, but in its present form it has been going since 1930. It is a festival of sports and entertainment held for local children, which culminates in the crowning of the Ferry Fair Queen, who is chose by primary school children from south Queensferry. Activities this year include races, a fancy dress competition, face painting, bouncy castles, quad bikes, obstacle course and live entertainment throughout the day and evening. The festival ends with the flag being lowered to the sound of massed pipe bands playing Highland Cathedral. The festival technically starts on August 4th but Saturday 10th is when everyone comes together to celebrate the end of the festival. High St, South Queensferry

Prostate Scotland Sponsored Walk N early 1 out of 2 men in the UK get prostate disease at some point in their lives. A recent survey of men over the age of 55 saw that more than half did not know the signs of prostate disease. This can include: • Passing urine more frequently • Waiting for longer before urine starts to flow • Stopping and starting when urinating • Weak, dribbly flow • Having to get up frequently during the night to urinate • Having to rush to the toilet • Needing to push to start urinating

The West Highland Way is a 96-mile hike, which turned out to be more like 115 miles from Milngavie to Fort William. The team started on Monday the 27th May and were accompanied by the mum and aunty of one of the hillwalkers until Balmaha. They stayed there overnight before walking to Inverarnan, up the east side of Loch Lomond, with another overnight stay enroute.

On Wednesday the party were joined with a walker’s dad as they continued up towards Bridge of Orchy. The group were lucky enough to have sunshine for the
first three days. But as this is Scotland, when the team left Bridge of Orchy the weather changed and it started raining. They stopped off for a lunch at the Kingshouse Hotel in Ballachulish in Glencoe before climbing the Devil’s Staircase above Rannoch Moor over to Kinlochleven for an overnight stay. The Devil’s Staircase was given its name by General Wade’s soldiers when they were building roads. The name was carried on by workers on the Blackwater Dam,

who used the route to travel to and from the pub at the Kingshouse Hotel On the last day, the group of hardy hill walkers climbed towards Glen Nevis in pouring rain, before they reached Fort William where they were joined by their wives and partners. The group raised £1500 for Prostate Scotland but they have a Just Giving page where they will accept more donations.

Hawthorn Bank Walled Garden Open Day

A Brief History of Hawthorn Bank
Queensferry Ambition survey recognised a need for a safe green space for the local community to enjoy. Local environmental heroes GreenFerry started to transform the area into a clean, welcoming space by getting rid of rubbish. Community consultations in 2014 saw the majority of respondents state that they wanted the space turned into a community
Hawthorn Bank Park was very generously gifted to South Queensferry as a community space in 1994 by Lord Rosebery. Originally it was a play park for children but sadly fell into disrepair after years of neglect by the local Council. A 2014 34
garden, so funds were raised to survey the site and prepare the land for transformation into a garden for everyone in the Ferry and surrounding areas to use. To celebrate the completition of the first phase of the project there was an open doors day for the local community in 2016. After that the Hawthorn Bank Walled Garden project raised money to complete the garden, this included moving earth, laying paths and building two platforms, one of which has two seats with a scenic view over the Forth Bridge. This stage finished in August last year with another open doors day, and the scene was set to add the finishing touches that would make a beautiful community garden for play, gardening, events and performances and just for relaxing in a restful spot.

Opening Day Celebrations Hawthorn Bank Walled Garden is inviting everyone in the local community to their opening day from 2pm on Saturday the 17th of August. The Honeypot are providing special crafts for children and adults during the opening. They are bringing along clay that can be cut into decorative tiles and decorated with leaves and flowers. If you want to create something lovely, bring along your favourite dried flowers or grasses or even some coloured beads to press into the clay. Then for a donation of £3-£5, it can be painted and glazed at Honeypot’s studio. It will make for a fun, creative activity for all the family, with something to take home at the end of the day. Please see examples of what can be done, you can even sign your name on the tile.
Mosaic Mural to Be Unveiled Over ten years ago, Mike Spring and Gary Smith of the Queensferry Mosaic Mural worked with over 100 members of the community to create a stunning piece 36
of art. Once finished they searched for a home for it and as none were appropriate or large enough it was stored in a garage for years until now. In the meantime as Hawthorn Bank Walled Garden was developed there was a large space on the back wall that urgently needed decorated with something artistic that was in keeping with the surroundings. After consultation with Edinburgh Council, it was agreed that the mosaic mural could be mounted on boards supported by scaffolding to provide a feature point for the wall. The mosaic is created from 30 separate panels which all had to be sealed with special resin. Local scaffolder Ian Gracie was kind enough to gift Hawthorn Bank with the backboards and scaffolding support, making this a true community project. The Walled Garden and Queensferry Mosaic Mural are excited to finally have a home for this stunning artwork, that will be shown to the public for the first time in ten years at the open day.
Sensory Trees Octopus Energy donated a bundle of 12 sensory trees to Hawthorn Bank as part of their national initiative to plant 10,000 trees in schools, parks and community gardens all over the UK. The Walled Garden has Lime trees for smell and sight, Crab Apple trees for taste and smell, Juniper trees for smell, Aspen trees for sound as well as Wild Cherry trees for smell and sight and even English Oak for touch. Hawthorn Bank had to share the love and donate the oak tree to a local park, as it will grow too large for the Walled Garden. The trees add an interesting, innovative touch to the community garden and are a nice way to explore the different senses with people.
Community Plant Drive Once work was done on the garden, there were raised beds but no plants or flowers. Members of the local community were invited to bring in any unwanted plants at the open doors day last August as Ferry Fair Saturday Sing in the City serenaded them. The project was also given plants throughout the year by generous locals and council rangers. This means that now there are two raised beds filled with flowers and plants, making it a true community garden in every respect. There is now a dedicated maintenance team of twelve keen gardeners, who are working every other week in teams of three, to weed, cut the grass and generally keep the garden looking beautiful. The sandstone walls feature sculptures created by sculptor Simon Burns-Cox who carved words and the Eye of Horus into the walls. The garden was featured in the Edinburgh Botanical Garden’s Shoreline project and exhibition, which is how Simon became introduced to the Hawthorn Bank Walled Garden.
Future Projects Hawthorn Bank Walled Garden has many plans for the future including ongoing lime pointing on the limestone steps and more planting in the raised beds and in planters throughout the garden. There is also an edible plant theme with a hedge of apple and pear trees with red and white currants and Cherry tree planting. The project will be putting up signs on the High Street so that locals and visitors can find the garden and enjoy it as a place to relax in. There will be a music and drama event in August’s Ferry Week for teenagers and later in the year there will be Christmas carol singing by torchlight. To enjoy your local community garden and see the unveiling of the mosaic mural, come to the open day on Saturday the 17th August from 2pm onwards. There will be light refreshments including delicious home baking and live music as well as clay tile decoration and plenty to do for every member of the family.
The local Tom Thumb nursery are the regular users of the garden, and have created play areas in different locations for small children to enjoy being outdoors in a safe, healthy location surrounded by plants. 37

he Kirkliston Children’s Gala on Saturday 8th June beat the weather this year and took place during a few dry and bright hours among an otherwise wet week. The organising committee worked hard on contingency plans that would have been needed if, as predicted, the rain was to arrive during the ceremony. Thankfully these were not required and the streets were lined to watch a well attended parade. Many local groups took part and walked proudly to the Cross to observe the wreath laying.
