elcome back to the 6th edition of Spotlight Magazine, your friendly, local guide to what’s on in South Queensferry, Kirkliston, Dalmeny and Newton.

At Spotlight Magazine, we like to showcase the best of what is going on in the local area. We hope you can make it to some of the exciting events on our What’s on Guide, as there is always something going on in around around South Queensferry, Dalmeny and Kirkliston.
First of all want to say thanks for all the positive feedback about our rebranded magazine. This edition is once again packed full of features about what is going on in the area. We take a look at what some of the charities in the area have been up to including Clean Ferry and the Rotary Club of South Queensferry. We also take a look at some of the events and characters at this year’s Ferry Fair. Hats Off To the Rotary Knitters

The crew of tankers and cargo vessels moored in areas such as Grangemouth, Braefoot Bay and Hound Point are also not forgotten, as there can be around 500 seafarers in Grangemouth at any one time. The Vice President of the Rotary Club Irene Brownless along with Beverly Clarkson, Jeanette Clark and Linda Murphy produced between them a total of 130 hats.

recent talk at the Rotary Club of South Queensferry by David Graham-Service of the National Mission to Seafarers spurred four Rotary Club members and friends to pick up their knitting needles. Attendees were told how seafarers from warmer countries such as India and the Philippines often have no warm clothing when they arrive in the northern hemisphere. Woollen hats are practical yet very welcome gifts for sailors as they are cheap and easy to make yet keep wearers cosy. Cruise ships carry huge numbers of low-paid male and female staff and last year over 3,000 hats were given out at Rosyth alone. On the Forth, woollen hats 8
Junior Vice President Derek Clark, owner of a local painting and decorating company, approached paint manufacturers such as Dulux and The Paint Shed and other building trade suppliers who offer promotional woolly hats to tradespeople. The companies were delighted to be able to donate their promotional hats to the NMS Woolly Hats Project. At the club awards night, David Graham-Service was provided with five boxes of hand-knitted and promotional woolly hats for visiting seafarers. Irene Brownless stated that, ‘ We like knitting and hope to continue with this worthwhile project.’ At the free wi-fi facility in the Hawes Inn, provided by the National Mission to Seafarers for crew who find it too expensive or difficult to contact friends and family when at sea, Mr Feleton Ferdandes, a seaman from Goa, India, confirmed that, ‘The hats are a
simple gift but mean a lot to sailors who spend so much time in cold weather. We are very grateful to the people who think of us and make the hats.’ The Rotary Club of South Queensferry meet every Thursday at 6.45pm in the historic Hawes Inn beside the iconic Forth Rail Bridge. Building a Clean Future with Clean Ferry
With a Little help from Our Friends from McDonald’s & the Local Community
S
outh Queensferry clean up crew CleanFerry are always looking for new innovative ways to engage the local community in keeping the town and surrounding area clean for everyone to enjoy. This time a member of the local business community approached them to find out about CleanFerry operations. The manager of McDonald’s at Builyeon Rd met with David from CleanFerry to hear how the organisation first reformed in 2016, and went on to have a team of 30+ volunteers who work together to maintain South Queensferry’s common spaces. The franchise owner and manager of McDonald’s expressed interest in joining up with CleanFerry to reduce litter and waste and discussed how to make this happen. They currently pick up litter on Builyeon Road but are now extending the clean up down the slip road to the Road Bridge bin every two weeks. In addition to this, they have replaced the plastic salad bowls with cardboard boxes, which are more environmentally friendly. With just this one change, 102 tonnes of plastic will be removed from the system every year. They are also committed to reducing more plastic later in the year. 14
McDonald’s have a goal to achieve zero waste to landfill, recycle all guest packaging and massively reduce the amount of single-use plastic. This vision ties in with that of CleanFerry, and aims to reduce the use of plastic worldwide as much as possible. In addition to a helping hand from McDonald’s, dedicated local volunteers have enthusiastically supported CleanFerry. During the summer months, the group reached out to community groups and businesses to help with their blitz of unsightly litter on the streets and beaches. They were helped by Katja from Wind & Cloud Travel on their big family beach clean up. In
addition all the children from Dalmeny Primary School joined together to tidy up the village. They also were approached by Scotmid about doing a big clean, as well as by the Scouts for an end of the season big beach litter pick at the Whitehouse Bay BBQ. This summer CleanFerry reached out to youth organisations, local businesses and families to educate and encourage them on how to build sustainable habits that will last a lifetime, to keep the environment clean. They had such positive results this year that they want to build on this and get more people involved in keeping their local areas clean, as well be informed about how to live a sustainable
life. The environment is reaching the point of no return so it is up to everyone to do their bit to reduce waste and litter.
