Welcome to the 9th Edition of Spotlight Magazine
I
t’s good to be back. The world has turned upside down since we were last able to bring you an issue of Spotlight. From everyone on the team we hope you are safe and well. If you have lost someone, are suffering or are struggling, our sympathies are with you. The courage, resilience and care this wonderful community of ours has shown throughout these difficult times is great to see. Thank you to everyone who has helped.
Elsewhere in the issue you will find our usual summary of what’s on in the area over the next two months. There were many Covid-19 restrictions still in place at the time we went to press so this list is significantly smaller then usual. If you have an event to promote in future, just drop us a line at hello@spotlight-mag. co.uk and we’ll happily include it. We’re proud to feature stories from the community and will always make space for district & community councils, the Rotary Club, local churches, youth groups and schools. We’re also pleased to report that in return, volunteers from many of these organisations are now helping to distribute the magazine. If you think you could help, please get in touch - we’re keen to talk to local people who would be happy to distribute the magazine to a few streets around their home.
This resilience was evident on 14th August during the 2020 Burryman Tour. Despite all the challenges, the team were able to put on a socially distanced tour. For those who witnessed it, it was clear that everyone was thankful for a small amount of normality returning to the community. Credit is due, in no small part, to Police Scotland who helped make it possible.

A
s we are now into the third phase of the Scottish Government’s Route Map through and, hopefully, out of this pandemic we continue to give consideration to the possibilities afforded by the legislation in the use of our buildings. Already we have opened Dalmeny Kirk for Private Prayer on Wednesday afternoons between 2 and 4pm and this has proven to be a blessing to the number of folks who have popped in.

For those, and only those, unable to access it at home, the livestreaming service being broadcast online each week from Queensferry Church will be shown on a large screen in the Dalmeny Church Centre on Sunday. Mornings at 10.30am.
With the current restrictions, our Fresh Expression of Church called ‘Sanctuary’, continues to gather online at our ‘Virtual Gathering’ at 3.30pm on every second Sunday afternoon – next Gathering on 6 September. T
his year, the Burryman event was like no other. Due to Covid-19, the 2020 Burryman Tour was in doubt up to a couple of weeks before the event. By working with Police Scotland, the Burryman team decided they could - and should - go ahead as it would be a much needed boost for the community. Special protocols were put into place and enforced by Police Scotland. Where possible, the Burryman stayed on the pavements, and used the roads as little as possible, so traffic wasn’t stopped and crowds didn’t form. No-one approached the Burryman and photos were taken at a distance.

On the tour itself, a “bubble” was created which was protected by a police cordon. PPE was used by the Burryman attendants (see pictures) and only Andrew’s wife, Claire, gave him anything to drink - well wishers poured their contributions into a sanitised glass beforehand and Claire gave it to Andrew. The reaction was amazing - well wishers and locals alike commented frequently on how nice it was to see a bit of normality return.

Speaking of the event, Burryman Andrew Taylor said, “Every year is special, but never has this been more true than of 2020. We thought long and hard about whether it would be feasible, and about the restrictions in place for the pandemic. We took advice from Police Scotland and, with them, we managed a socially distanced Burryman Tour! The reaction from the locals on the day was breathtaking. It was clear that we represented a return to normality. Everyone respected the distance and only my wife, Claire, was able to give me a drink! It is said the Burryman banishes evil and brings bad luck, we hope that is true today more than ever before! It has been such a tough year!

he global pandemic has suspended many projects presently, however QDCC has still been actively engaging with residents, local businesses, City of Edinburgh Council, local police, developers and other organisations through socially distant discussions, email, Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, MS Teams, Skype and Zoom. Plans are in place to commence monthly full community council virtual meetings through the MS Teams platform from August. The High St – temporary social distancing (Spaces for People) proposals by CEC have been discussed and are progressing. QDCC has suggested an alternative to the unpopular ‘no through road’ proposal with a widely supported opportunity to trial a one way system, widened pavements and investigate peak period pedestrianisation trials. The permanent High St refurbishment project which was suspended due to lockdown is evolving towards a more pedestrian friendly orientation, in line with a change in public expectation. O Fellowships Awarded & New President
n Wednesday 1st July, The Binks at Queensferry foreshore was the chosen location for the presentation of four Paul Harris Fellowships. In one of his last duties before the end of his year as president, Jim McCulloch said he was delighted to present one of the highest awards in Rotary to four worthy members who has each served the club and the local community in different ways. Suitably spaced out, Drew Graham, Sandy Mackenzie, Graham Clarkson and Richard Brown received medals and certificates. Drew Graham, at 88 the senior member of the club, was nominated by Allan Smith. Drew spent many years farming in Canada. He has performed many services for the club over the last eleven years, such as towing Santa's Sleigh. 32
Sandy Mackenzie, nominated by Craig MacKenzie, joined Rotary in 2004 and from the outset was enthusiastically involved in running and promoting the club. He served as president in 2018-19, not missing a single meeting, and is well-known and respected in District 1020 as a fine Rotarian. Graham Clarkson, nominated by Adam Dzierzek, has put an immense amount of time and effort into organising the Rotary Forth Bridge Abseil over the last ten years. Graham used his technical expertise to devise the online registration system and was largely responsible for recruiting and liaising with the many charities which benefited from the event. Richard Brown was nominated by Assistant District Governor Graham Leith. In his citation ADG Graham said that although already a Paul Harris Fellow, Richard deserved a second one because of the work he does for the club and community. For the past 30 years Richard has ensured that the club has a functioning Santa's Sleigh ready for every Christmas. On Thursday 2nd July, the Rotary Club of South Queensferry held a Zoom meeting to mark the end of Jim McCulloch's year as president and install Irene Brownless as president for Rotary Year 202021. President Jim welcomed the thirty-two members, partners and friends who joined the meeting.

Orocco Pier Spotlight on Food
I
n a new feature for 2020, we are highlighting some of the great food and drink available in the local area. For our first outing we are paying a visit to South Queensferry High Street favourites, Orocco Pier.
There are three flavour combinations; shown left to right in the photo. Firstly there is pulled lamb with mint and capers, followed by a crispy fish fillet with tartare sauce. The trio is rounded off with a classic beef slider, topped with brie and chilli jam. A basket of crispy fries seals the deal.
For those that don’t know, or may have forgotten, Orocco Pier offers 3 venues; the cafe bar, Antico; formal dining restaurant, Samphire; and events venue, Fuschia. For this visit, we sampled a dish from Antico which is open Sunday to Thursday 9am to 11pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to midnight.
It is a taste sensation and generously priced as the whole lot is washed down with a pint for not much more than the price of the meal itself. Perfect for a casual treat on a relaxed weekend outing or a quick midweek bite with friends.
For many, a decent burger is hard to find yet Antico serves up 3 great burgers for the price of 1. Smaller burgers - or sliders as they are known - are presented as a casual dining experience for a very reasonable £15.95. However, Antico is currently serving these tasty treats together with a pint of Belhaven Best for only £17.50.
