Welcome to the September/October issue of Spotlight Magazine!

H

ow was your summer? It seems like it was here and gone in the blink of an eye. Despite this, it is pleasing to report that following Kirkliston’s Gala success in June, South Queensferry managed not one, but TWO Ferry Fairs AND a Burryman Tour in August! I am delighted to present photo features in this issue of all 3 events. While some Covid-19 restrictions remained in place (we moved to level 0 between the 2020 and 2021 ceremonies taking place) it is safe to say that the main threat was our old friend, the weather. Although some rain fell on 7th August as the 2020 queen was crowned, after a two year absence, it was never going to spoil the celebrations! A week later, we all basked in the sunshine as the 2021 queen was crowned, also in the glorious setting of Rosebery Estate.

A warm welcome to Allium - the latest advertiser to join the Spotlight family. Have a look at pages 22 & 23 to see some of the fantastic products available at this great shop, run by Kirstin Heggie. As a thank to all our contributors and supporters who make this community magazine possible, last month we hosted, courtesy of our friends at Rogue Detailing, the first Spotlight Social evening. With refreshments supplied by The Ferry Brewery, this was event designed to bring all business and community contributors together to see how we can best support each other. This might be through a business referral or sharing valuable knowledge and experience. It is great example of how Spotlight is so much more than a printed magazine.

To take part in the next one, you simply need to be a Spotlight advertiser.

Spotlight continues to work with our community partners at Queensferry Parish Church, The Rotary Club of South Queensferry and the Queensferry & District Community Council to bring you news of what is happening in the area. In this issue, we are also reporting on the book, Queensferry at War, that has been published recently by the Queensferry History Group. By working with community groups like these, Spotlight is able to highlight events and organisations that are important to the area and inform people about news and developments. With the onset of autumn, it is time to look forward to our next issue which will be the last of the year and will be available throughout November & December.

It is impossible to predict what 2021’s festive season will look like but I can report that some early planning is underway already for events in the community.

Ferry Fair 2020

A

fter a length delay due to Covid-19, the 2020 Ferry Fair Queen, Jessica, was crowned on Saturday 7th August 2021 in the grounds of the Dalmeny Estate.

Despite the changeable weather, everyone was smiling as the ceremony took place.

Thereafter a tour of the burgh was made in a procession of vehicles before a wreath was laid at the war memorial on the High Street.

Time for Something New A s we slowly shake off the restrictions of these last 18 or so months, many of us are beginning to find ourselves asking questions about what happens next. We’ve journeyed through an unusual time where many of the things that we took for granted were out of our reach.

For the prophet to see his message take root, it wasn’t enough just to say there’s something new coming, there’s something new happening – he had to set out a fresh vision of what the new thing might look like. Time and again he set before them perhaps the most exciting, radical, hopeful, life affirming and liberating vision ever found in a nation’s manifesto. It was you might say just what they needed to hear and at a time that they needed to hear it.

The world got a bit of a rest from our constant demands upon it and we ourselves adapted to a way of life marked by less travel, fewer gatherings and at a pace unknown. Whether the last 18 months have been frenetic or calm, the passing of time has given many of us the opportunity to evaluate and re-evaluate that which matters in life and as we slowly emerge, you may well be asking yourself bigger questions about what next.

So here we are and all of us with the opportunity to shape and fashion our perspectives on our areas of influence be that family, community, workplace, neighbourhood, society and world. What might be the things that we would paint as the vision that would lift the heads and hearts of those we are journeying through this time with?

Many years ago an ancient prophet or herald, spoke to a group of people who had been through a season in which everything familiar had changed. Despite being taken from all that they knew as ‘normal’, a new season began to emerge for them and no doubt they would have had many of the same thoughts, hesitations and feelings that we are all living with today.

No idea? Then let me ask…

Is there something you’ve always dreamt of doing yet around you and within you there have been voices saying to you; ‘who do you think you are to think such things?’ What is it ?

Is there something that these last months have taught you that you don’t want to let go of as we return to our new ‘normal’? What is it?

The voice speaking above the crowd spoke with a hope and a passion and a perspective that stood out from all the other voices of the day. How did they respond to such a voice and message?

Is there someone you could share your dream with that won’t squash it but will help you discover what the first step might be in making your dream a reality?

Who is it?

and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and placed it into the sea. The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”. The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Returning the starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I get them back into the water.” The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”. The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and gently got it back into the ocean.

Then he turned, smiled, and said, “well, it made a difference to that one!”

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work.

Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions. Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often

(adapted from ‘The Star Thrower’ written by Loren Eiseley) Whatever your dreams – go make them happen – how the world is waiting for the casters of dreams to make them a reality and perhaps just maybe the words Jesus invited us to pray in the world’s best-known prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, might just come to pass… ‘your kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven…’

The Burryman

2021 T

he annual Burryman tour took place on Friday 13th August. This year was even more special as the 2021 tour was Andrew Taylor's 10th outing as The Burryman. Andrew showed no signs of getting tired of the tradition, and was helped as always by his loyal team of attendants and supporters. The Burryman's hat is traditionally presented to an outstanding member of the community and this year it went to two people; Jane Harkin, vice chair of the Ferry Fair Committee, who was retiring after 25 years of service, and Cameron Forrester, who has served as bell ringer for 10 years.

HAYLEIGH HONOURED FOR HELPING OTHERS

This year, three young people were nominated for the Ronald Ainsworth Trophy, awarded by Rotary to a young person who has made a difference in the community. The trophy was donated by founder member and past president of the club Ronald Ainsworth in 2017. Ronald passed away in 2018, and his widow Sheana joined President Irene Brownless and past president Jim McCulloch in the difficult task of selecting a winner from three very worthy candidates. After careful consideration, the award went to Hayleigh Glendinning.

Hayleigh, who is now starting on year S6 at Queensferry High School, has shown resilience and focus, especially over the last few years. Since 2018, Hayleigh has been a Police Scotland Youth Volunteer and her aim is to join the police force.

She is community minded, caring, and happy to give up her time to support others. She was nominated for the trophy

by Queensferry High School.

VIRTUAL HANDOVER MARKS CHANGE OF PRESIDENTS AND START OF NEW ROTARY YEAR On Thursday 1st July, the Rotary Club of On Thursday 1st July, the club held a meeting to mark the end of Irene Brownless’s year as president and install Derek Clark as president for Rotary Year 2021-22. Gerald Smith showed a presentation of Irene’s year as president. President Irene thanked all club members for their support over the year and Vice President Derek and Secretary Liz Mackenzie for their invaluable help.

Irene then handed over the meeting to her successor, incoming president Derek who congratulated Irene for all she had achieved in 2020-21 despite the limitations imposed by Covid 19. He promised that she could have her photograph taken in the presidential chair as soon as the club was able to move back to the Hawes Inn, though this might still be some time ahead. He proposed a toast to Immediate Past President Irene.

President Derek thanked Gerald for his superb presentation and IPP Irene said it would be a great memento of the year for her to keep.

T

he second Ferry Fair coronation within a week took place on Saturday 14th August, and saw Grace Higgins elected as the 2021 queen. Grace's reign will be longer than her predecessor's but, we hope, no longer than the usual amount! A relaxation of covid restrictions also meant that a small public parade could take place after the wreath laying, to observe the lowering of the flag.

Queensferry at War S oldiers who made the “ultimate sacrifice” are being remembered by local historians. Queensferry History Group has produced a new book and website highlighting the men from the town – and neighbouring Dalmeny – who went to fight in World War I but never returned.

The beautifully illustrated “Queensferry At War” book is complemented by the www.queensferryhistory.org site. It includes pen portraits of people named on local war memorials and highlights the area’s involvement in the War effort.

Caroline Clark, Director Scotland of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “We are delighted to have supported the Queensferry History Group to produce this important history and record of the contributions of the local people to such a life-changing period for the local community.

DCC has continued operating remotely throughout the pandemic, using various online tools. Monthly meetings are held on the evening of the fourth Monday of every month except December, open to the public and are currently conducted using MS Teams video conferencing. Planning Major housing developments in construction at South Scotstoun and Ferrymuir; two more in the pipeline at Springfield and Builyeon Rd (mixed use) subject to approval, and Scotstoun House (Arup site) is being considered for housing.

Details of those and other developments are available in our monthly newsletters on our website. The next phase of developments under City plan 2030 is due before the council in the autumn.

Transport

Car Park commenced after the Ferry Fair. This negates the need for multiple turn points and is part of the preparation work for the High St refurbishment which still awaits an additional funding decision.

Local policing Local community officer PC Martin Crow retired in Aug and is replaced by PC Dave Campbell along with PC MacLeod.

PC Gill Young continues as community liaison officer at QHS. We wish Martin a happy retirement and thank him for his invaluable support. Traffic police have increased monitoring of the town following complaints of antisocial driving behaviour, particularly late evenings.

Education & Recreation The new QHS Leisure facilities have returned to normal hours now schools are back. Please make full use to demonstrate demand, this will support us in negotiating for more facilities but equally hinder us if underused. The safety audit on Spaces for People has been presented to Edinburgh Council; we await details and recommendations once released. A further traffic study of the area is expected imminently.

Environmental Work outside QHS by Scottish Water continues to upgrade the drainage system.

Forth Bridge Experience The previously approved plans for the Forth Bridge Walk Experience Reception Centre have had to be revised by Network Rail due to cost. The new design also addresses some of the concerns expressed by residents and the community council. Online consultations prior to planning submission will be held with 15 minute booking slots. Additional slots can be booked if required and a third session will be created if necessary. New Public Access Defibrillator on the High Street

Anne Mitchell of St John Scotland was delighted to receive a new defibrillator from Liz King in memory of her husband, Davie. The defibrillator has been installed on the west facing wall of Neilson’s Solictor’s and Estate Agents.

Anne said, “This has been a great project, which was facilitated by St John Scotland, with the equipment purchased
