appy New Year! For many of us, 2021 hasn’t brought much good cheer or reason to celebrate as Covid-19 restrictions continue to prevent us from living our lives they way we would like. However, as we put this issue together, we were struck by the determination and resilience of this amazing community of ours.

Everyone is making sure strict social distancing guidelines are followed. As a result, while we may have to suspend some door-to-door deliveries, the magazine continues to reach as many people as it ever did. Sincere thanks to everyone involved, and we look forward to working with more businesses as restrictions are relaxed in the future. We’re particularly interested in hearing from businesses in Kirkliston.

Finally, as restrictions may tighten and change, please rest assured that we will continue to do our best to meet print and distribution deadlines. Sing When You’re Winning

by Pastor Clive Parnell The crowd backing the winning team lose a goal and fall silent. The opposing team take the time to sing in unison “Sing when you’re winning, you only sing when you are winning.” Have you ever asked yourself the question Why do we sing? Why do we sing whether it feels like we are winning or losing?

What if singing was more than survival?

What if we sing because we have a desire to worship? It maybe you call yourself an atheist, agnostic or a Christian but music and singing have a transcendent nature.

Nick Hornby the writer says “I try not to believe in God, of course, but sometimes things happen in music, in songs, that bring me up short, make me do a double take. When things add up to more than the sum of their parts, when the effects achieved are inexplicable, then atheists like me start to get into difficult territory.”

I have thought about this quite a bit on two fronts 1) As a singer/songwriter who can’t sing and play live to audiences due to restrictions and 2) As a Pastor at Kirkliston Community Church where we are unable to sing due to the restrictions of the global pandemic.

I think it is important to be aware of the good times and the bad times and different genres of music remind us of this. As a church we love to sing and play music and it has been really hard not being able to do this. Singing in church is about us relating to God and each other we are also reminded of the words which speak of the relationship God wants with us through Jesus.

I enjoy seeing and hearing the birds sing at this time of year and one bird who makes itself known with his song is the robin. In the book “The Robin: A Biography” by Stephen Moss we learn many things about robins and why they sing. The male robin sings to his chicks so that they can learn the song and that they may survive, “They need to listen to their Father’s song – Much as human children need to speak by listening to their parents.”

As a christian, I see that music and singing is a response to that to which we know is true. I think we sing and are all

worshipers of something. Watch or go to Glastonbury and look at people lifting their hands to the heavens. The Bible is full of songs, 150 psalms, love songs, songs of celebration, songs of lament and songs of hope.

SANTA GOES ONLINE From early December, Santa normally tours the streets of Queensferry with his Rotary helpers. But last year, as everyone stayed safe and avoided close contact, he wasn't out and about with his sleigh. Children could see him online, however, by visiting the Rotary Club's website, or using Facebook or You Tube.

Santa had a message for everyone and viewers could watch a specially produced video of Santa at Hopetoun Estate. Santa and his Sleigh also appeared at the virtual switch-on of Queensferry's Christmas lights on Thursday 26th November. There was a chance to contribute online last year, and everything donated to Santa went to help local causes. Funds are used to support many groups and individuals and an extensive youth programme.

ECHLINE PRIMARY SCHOOL THANKS SANTA AND ROTARY In December a happy group of children from Echline Primary School, South Queensferry, showed appreciation to the Rotary Club of South Queensferry for the presentation of ÂŁ750 to provide exercise and play equipment to improve their health through safe activity. They also displayed the Santa's Sleigh Colouring Sheets, designed by Ed Kelly, which were supplied to all primary schools in the area. Children took them home to colour in and put in their windows.

DONATION HELPS AMAZON MEDICAL PROGRAMME Queensferry Rotary received a letter of thanks from The Vine Trust for the club's donation of ÂŁ500 made in December. The Vine Trust, based in Edinburgh, runs the Amazon Hope Medical Programme which uses medical ship expeditions to bring floating medical and dental care to remote communities in South America. The Trust reported that the Covid 19 pandemic has put a temporary halt to its volunteering programmes. However the hospital ship Forth Hope has resumed working on the Amazon in a Covid-safe manner. The Rotary Club's donation will be of great help in ensuring that a full medical programme can be restored when it is safe to do so. Queensferry Rotary's association with The Vine Trust goes back many years. When the Amazon Hope 1 was being fitted out at Rosyth before taking up her duties on the Amazon, the late Rev John Carrie and Rotarian Gerald Smith removed the cross from outside the disused sailors' mission at Port Edgar. It was attached to the Amazon Hope's mast and blessed for a safe journey.

Queensferry & District Community Council Q

DCC has continued operating remotely using various online tools. Monthly meetings are held on the fourth Monday of every month except December, open to the public and are currently conducted using MS Teams video conferencing. The City 2030 proposal will be presented to City of Edinburgh full council, which incorporates a potential development to the west of the Queensferry Crossing approach.

Transport: The High St refurbishment plans continue to be developed by CEC, Ironside Farrar and the Steering Group.

An application for a significant grant to bolster the funds available has been submitted. The Spaces for People High St plans, which aim to facilitate safer social distancing and trial a one way (west to east) traffic system from Gote Lane to beyond Sealscraig, with widened pavements, were postponed by CEC from pre-xmas after QDCC intervened with serious concerns expressed by local businesses on Christmas trade and our concerns over insufficient infrastructure preparation in the instalment plan. The Forth Bridges Forum have now committed to publishing newsletters. Trials have been conducted by Transport Scotland on a contingency for closures of the Queensferry Crossing to divert traffic over the Forth Road Bridge.

Planning: Ambassador has commenced construction at the Ferrymuir housing site. The area has been fenced to separate passing pedestrians and cyclists from the construction traffic. Discussions over the Ferrymuir access road continue, as does a residents’ dispute over land ownership between the site and the Varneys estate. The Springfield housing application (referred to as Echline) has been submitted to the council by Cala after much public consultation and input.

The Builyeon Rd detailed plan is being developed for submission, also by Cala.

Youth Engagement: CEC Lifelong Learning personnel have re-commenced local work and QDCC is working with QHS pupils and management to build on the constructive work done by our young community and address some of the minority issues.

Thanks to both Morrisons and Matalan in Livingston for giving us a discount on these purchases too. St Vincent de Paul linked with us and by the Ferry Elves supplying presents and finding winter clothing they were able to support the families in other ways with fresh food or fuel payments.

Health & Wellbeing: On the back of a support initiative by two local residents, the QDCC Health and Wellbeing sub group identified that there was a potential for more families in the area to struggle this Christmas than would normally.

To support families who found themselves in this position, particularly due to COVID19, the Ferry Elves were born!

The Pupils and staff of Queensferry High School collected food and toiletries for food banks and anyone else who needed extra support. They very kindly allowed us to make up food packages for the local families before we took the remainder to the food bank, as well as surprising 6 older folk who needed a bit of help. We had people donate wrapping paper, make Christmas stockings, donate handmade children's quilts, give us books they had written and offered their help. We do have some items and money left over and that is being discussed the best way to utilise these within the community. On the basis that older people are part of our families we have already taken the extra toiletries and gifts to Queensferry Care to use as they see fit, either as gifts for their clients or for use in the fundraising raffles that they rely on to keep functioning.

Any remaining clothes we will discuss with the local Health visitors, the Early years centre and Kids Love Clothes. The latter takes ‘as new’ clothes, wash and iron them, then wrap as new to give to families. They have a 3 month waiting list at present so it was well used in this local area. Thank you to all who supported us.

In the space of 24 hours we had a Just Giving page, a dedicated email address that only one person would access in order to maintain confidentiality and somewhere to store the odd item we were donated! We put out flyers on bus stops and information about our plans on various Facebook sites.

The people in this area did not let us down - the Just Giving page far exceeded our target with over £1200 pledged and the donations of pre-loved but immaculate toys, clothes and gifts were overwhelming. Thanks to the generosity of this community we supported 51 young people. We tried to spend about £20 on each youngster then made sure that the under10s had about 6 toys including the pre-loved ones. Parents never asked for themselves so we tried hard to include them as appropriate.

Many organisations were already supporting people in varied ways and we were able to tap into those resources; the local primary schools had been given funding from the Rotary club to buy winter coats and shoes so we managed

ith pubs and restaurants closed and some hotels only open to guests, options for eating out have been limited recently. Takeaways and delivery outlets have been able to remain open, subject to some very strict guidelines. It was therefore appropriate for Spotlight to pay a visit to one of these so we decided to call on our friends at Picnic.

Along with coffees, teas, tray bakes and special treats, a walk (or drive) to the kiosk makes a welcome change from staying at home for lunch every day.

Our visit was no exception. The ciabatta pictured above was filled with delicious roast chicken and vegetables and oozed warm mozzarella in every bite. Well worth the trip!

A friendly couple from Italy, Francesco and Franca, first opened their premises in South Queensferry’s High Street a few years before opening their kiosk at the Bridges View Point. Nowadays their original venue is the new home to Maisie’s Gift Shop and the kiosk is their sole food outlet. It has become a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Never before has eating out been more literal, as takeaways are currently required to serve customers waiting outside via a hatch, doorway or from a kiosk like Picnic. Our advice is to wrap up warm and enjoy the experience. A hot drink and a warm meal make a wet and windy (or even frosty!) walk even more enjoyable.

Most recently it has become a focal point for the daily exercise route - as many people take advantage of daylight hours to take a walk and a break from locked down living. A stroll to the Bridges View Point at lunchtime is a great idea with a range of tasty filled ciabattas, paninis and toasties being served daily Monday to Friday.
