Welcome to the May/June issue of Spotlight Magazine

I

t has been a delight to see life returning to our community and the High Street in Queensferry now has a buzz to it that has been absent for so long. While not all the businesses have reopened yet, many were able to on Monday 26th April, including Spotlight Magazine’s home, Words & Pictures. It has been so nice to see friends and neighbours back at work. Everyone is looking forward to when the last remaining restrictions lift and, among others, hospitality businesses can operate normally.

The magazine’s distribution network goes from strength to strength – possibly one of the few positive outcomes of the pandemic. Spotlight is now using a combination of commercial, and volunteer distributors together with staff and advertisers. It would be remiss not to mention a very hard-working W&P team member, Matthew, who has been overseeing much of our letterbox distribution. Matthew’s energy and dedication are much valued. A massive thanks, also, to our friends from Rotary and QDCC who deliver a significant number of magazines in return for the space we give them. An example of community partnerships working at their best.

Although restrictions on many aspects of our lives and livelihoods remain in place, and the early summer may not be what you wished for, let’s hope things continue to improve. As always, Rev David Cameron has a hopeful message for us in this issue which may inspire you as he asks, is it time to fly? Whether you have, or have not, any plans to fly (or travel) anytime soon, my very best wishes for May and June.

Time to Fly?

ecently I came across this spectacular photograph of three stages of life experienced by a caterpillar.

The beautiful colours and details in the picture paint, as the old saying goes, a thousand words. And that, our editor will be pleased to know, is my target!

The picture is also I believe a parable for our times. It speaks powerfully about the journey we have all been on this last year and the question I want to invite you to ponder is this: ‘Looking back over this past year and looking at where you are at today, which part in the picture best describes your position?

For myself and for many folks I speak to, the second stage is perhaps the one which best captures where we are at and it is where I’d put myself – in a place of cocoon-ment.

This is no passive, lethargic, inactive place – it is a place of transformation, of anticipation, of preparation, a place where letting go of old ways and preparing for new ways of living and being are forged.

Being in such a place perhaps feels a little daunting and unsettling but some ancient words that I’ve used to close our Sunday morning livestreamed services over this last year will, I hope, input some courage and confidence as you move through whichever stage you are at.

On the night before Joshua began to lead God’s people into a whole new land across the river Jordan, God spoke to him some words which I find to be some of the most encouraging words ever written: 8

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Book of Joshua in the Bible, Ch1 vs 9)

Time to fly? How about a prayer to help us find our wings: “Lord, the thought of changing and transforming in such a radical way may at times feel terrifying, I’d really prefer change to be gradual, almost unnoticeable – like the subtle appearance of grey hairs and wrinkles.

Let me encourage you to take strength from these words finding wings to fly is an exciting but challenging adventure.

During his three short years as an itinerant teacher and preacher, Jesus invited many different people, from all walks of life and especially those who weren’t too religious or were often excluded and marginalised from the rest of society, to go on an adventure of transformation with him.

Moving, as we are, through times of major change, we’ve already seen our world adapt to a whole new way of being and although there is a big part of me that would be quite happy to return to being caterpillar like, I know that to discover something new, something different, something that I never have known before, is, if I’m honest, far more appealing.

Since those years millions the world over have also experienced his invitation, no matter what kind of past they had and what kind of present they faced.

He quietly and graciously says: “come follow me” and, as we respond to such an invitation, the new life experienced is on a par with caterpillars becoming butterflies! What are some of the features of this new life?

Give me Lord, and those around me, courage to change, confidence to begin a journey of transformation and perseverance to keep pressing on until the new world is my home. Amen.”

Our past is fully forgiven.

Our present has a new purpose and meaning.

Our future becomes filled with hope.

he effects of Covid-19 will be felt by society for years and people at all stages of life have had different challenges to face. One such challenge is now knowing when the right time to retire is. The pandemic has brought with it a number of issues that have affected retirement planning – and it may be a surprise to know that it isn’t always the case that these have delayed plans.

community projects. Irene mentioned a few highlights such as Castles in Film from Mary's Meanders, sharing stories from various film locations for Outlander and Outlaw King around our area. The club presented Amazon Fire tablets to carers for people living with dementia to help alleviate stress and isolation. In co-operation with Edinburgh University IT Reuse Project, the club made refurbished tablets available to local primary schools to support home-based learning.

In her round-up of the third quarter of her Rotary year, President Irene Brownless remarked that the past year had been an unprecedented time in the club's history due to the Covid crisis which has 'set the world on fire'. To keep members and the public safe, most club activities, events and projects have been cancelled and weekly meetings have moved to Zoom. Despite these difficulties, the club has maintained a lively programme of regular speakers and managed to continue with a restricted range of

n Thursday 22nd April the Rotary Club of South Queensferry held its Annual Photographic Competition. For another year, the eighty-five entries from club members and their families were viewed virtually through Zoom. A shortlist of 13 entries was announced, followed by the top 3 prize winners (pictured). There were ten raffle prize winners, and the proceeds of the competition will go to the charity Freedom From Fistula which treats women suffering from childbirth injuries in Africa. The charity has recently resumed operations after Covid forced it to close, and already twelve women have received treatment. The theme of next year's Photographic Competition is 'Home'.

A Rotary Foundation Grant was a welcome boost for the project at Maude's Close, Kirkliston, where an outbuilding was remodelled to provide a warm and safe place for residents of the young people's sheltered housing to meet family and friends in compliance with Covid regulations. Previously they could only meet outdoors. Vice President Derek Clark visited Grangemouth on behalf of the club to deliver another fantastic supply of much appreciated woolly hats for use by seafarers. These unseen key workers during this pandemic spend many months, sometimes years, away from home often ill-equipped with clothing for working in northern climes. President Irene, Beverly Clarkson and Jeanette Clark knitted some hats, others were supplied by Derek's business contacts.

The current messages from RIBI and the Scottish Government were to exercise

great caution. Vaccination does not necessarily remove all the risks, so it is not a given that weekly meetings will resume just because the hospitality sector can legally open again. We are monitoring the situation, but it is likely that Zoom meetings will be with us for some time.

Queensferry & District Community Council

DCC has continued operating remotely throughout the pandemic, using various online tools. Monthly meetings are held on the evening of the fourth Monday of every month except December, open to the public and are currently conducted using MS Teams video conferencing. Anyone wishing to join the meeting or to raise any points should email us through our website www.queensferrycommunitycouncil. co.uk/.

PLANNING: Two major housing developments in construction at South Scotstoun and Ferrymuir; two more in the pipeline at Springfield and Builyeon Rd (mixed use) subject to approval, and Scotstoun House (Arup site) is being considered for housing. Details of those and other developments available in our monthly newsletters on our website.

TRANSPORT: The Spaces for People project was implemented on the High St in March. It presents the opportunity to trial a one way traffic system. Whilst no solution will satisfy all, early indications are an improvement on the previous two

way system for many but adjustments required. The Just Eat cycle hire pilot in the town has now ended and the organisers have decided not to continue for now without the pilot funding from CEC. Initially very popular but usage dropped latterly. QDCC is of the opinion this is a premature decision and that the condition of the docking stations and bikes should be addressed to encourage the original interest, discussions are ongoing at the time of writing.

EDUCATION & RECREATION: John Wood, Head Teacher of QHS has announced his intention to retire after the summer term. QDCC wishes John all the best and thanks for 37 years in teaching with the last 10 years as HT at Queensferry, latterly involved with his team in the layout of the new state of the art QHS designed around modern learning methods. We look forward to working with the new HT and senior team across many levels from engagement with our young community to community access to the fantastic new leisure facilities including a swimming pool which opened in April. QDCC worked hard with the support of ward councillors to negotiate some fantastic facilities for the community, we continue to negotiate increased access hours.

LOCAL ECONOMY: April saw the reopening of many local businesses with May 17th to see further lifting of restrictions. The Spaces for People measures will be tested more rigorously once the town is running back to full capacity or as close as we can get in the circumstances. To help kick start business CEC have been running focus weeks on various parts of the city through edinburgh.org and Queensferry had a fantastic prize draw competition offer in April which was well subscribed. Thank you to the local businesses who participated and generously donated prizes.

South Queensferry Harbour Review Our harbour is owned by the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) and it is leased and managed by the Queensferry Boat Club (QBC). The club ensures that all of the vessels in the harbour area are properly moored and insured for third party risks.

The CEC has overall liability for the safety of people. We at the QBC have a deeply felt love for this ancient harbour facility and have been concerned by the deterioration of the fabric over the last twenty years.

We are delighted that, thanks to support from Queensferry and District Community Council (QDCC) and other concerned individuals, funding from the CEC has been agreed and work has started on a repair programme. The programme has been planned, organised and will be supervised by the relevant CEC departments. As well as being an asset to the people of South Queensferry and Edinburgh in general, the harbour is a major tourist attraction in its own right - affording wonderful views of the Forth and our magnificent bridges.

The repair work will be directed towards ensuring that access to the harbour is safe and sound for the use of all of our people. I must warn everyone of the dangers associated with close proximity to the sea. There is always the danger of slips, trips and falls and great care must be taken in the areas where the sea weed might cover irregular stone work. Use of all the stairways should be avoided until the repairs have been completed. Always bear in mind that when the tide is out it is a long drop to the bottom of the harbour. It will be great to see all our boats back on their moorings this summer and we at the QBC are looking forward to the sailing season so come on down for a breath of sea air.

Proposed Residential Development Scotstoun House, South Queensferry, EH30 9SE Pre-application Consultation

AMA (New Town) Ltd is undertaking pre-application consultation regarding its proposals to redevelop Scotstoun House for residential development. The proposal is for: Redevelopment of Scotstoun House including conversion and extension of existing buildings to residential use, part-demolition of office extension, and erection of new build residential development with associated infrastructure, landscaping, access, and parking.

Due to on-going Covid restrictions, AMA and the development team are holding a drop-in online question and answer session on 20 May 2021 between 6pm and 8pm.
