Along with the rebrand, we’ll be introducing a variety of new sections to the publication, one of which we’re trying out in this issue - Community Noticeboard (pages 36-37). Since our team took over Local Directory Live at the start of 2018, our vision has been to create a local community magazine that is engaging and informative to its readers. We’ve worked hard to source as much local content as possible, and we’ve also spent time gathering and understanding feedback from our readers and advertisers.

I
n October 1984, Sheena Garthley, with a little help from her husband David, started trading as Scruples Jewellers. At the time, passers-by were heard to comment: “A jeweller’s shop in South Queensferry? I doubt that will last”.
34 years later, Scruples Jewellers is the longest trading independent retail business in South Queensferry and Sheena has turned the doubtful passers-by into long standing customers. After nearly 4 decades in business, these customer’s children (and their children too) have shopped regularly at Scruples for diamond engagement and wedding rings, then christening gifts. Sheena’s vision and a passion for the products she sells, her understanding of her customers’ tastes and desires for quality products - whether it be gold and silver jewellery, crystal glassware, ornamentation or gifts - have been the cornerstone of Scruples’ longevity. Sadly, Scruples cannot trade as a jeweller forever as retirement beckons. As Sheena reflects on the last 34 years, she remembers humorous moments, such as customers who have asked: “have you got a watch for my battery?” and the lady who looked around the shop and said “I’m not in the opticians, am I”. Then there were the dogs that dragged their owners into the shop looking for their biscuit treat. Thankful for the memories and appreciative of the gifts as tokens of gratitude received from customers over the years who, in turn, were grateful for the service received. Everyone who has made purchases, whether big or small, has contributed to Scruples’ success. Sheena would like to express her thanks to everyone, having enjoyed being of service and part of this great local community. Sorrowful to be going, and to those doubtful passers-by from 1984, maybe you were right - we did not last, age caught us out!

Christine Jardine MP questions being posed to South Queensferry residents as part of a current consultation exercise. I popped in to Orocco Pier recently to see the exhibition by consultants on behalf of the Queensferry High Street Project steering group. Their aim is to re-establish the town as a high-quality heritage destination. But they are also keen to protect the area as one which provides a service to residents which is both attractive and easy to use. The High Street is the heart of the community and they steering group wants to keep it that way. The mock-ups on show and the vision of the High Street were certainly imaginative and attractive, but whether they are what the community wants is up to you.
O
ne of my highlights of the past few weeks was meeting the fantastic people of Queensferry Care when they held their coffee morning in Ratho. It was terrific to get a chance to hear about the service they provide and how they hope to expand in future. But I also got the chance to talk to some of the people who use the services, and have a cuppa. It’s all too easy to forget the work that organisations like Queensferry Care do, and where we might all be without them.
Of course the music events they run for some of their clients are amongst my favourites and I may have accidentally volunteered to take part – don’t say I didn’t warn you! For me, Queensferry High Street is both one of the most beautiful and at the same time most frustrating stretches of main street in any Scottish town.
The group has invited comments and I hope as many of you as possible will respond.The High Street is a jewel. Let’s make sure we do the best for it and the community. Another issue on which I would particularly like to hear from you is whether we are making the most for the community of the tourist potential of the three bridges? It’s an idea that several people have suggested to me. What each of them has had in mind is somewhere for those visitors with a specific interest in the bridges and who would like to know more about their histories, construction and significance to our economy and culture. The original bridge is both a world heritage site and a monument to the golden age of rail in this country. In fact, all three bridges have been record holders, pinnacles of engineering for their time. Are we missing an opportunity?
But would I change the High Street? If I did what would I do with it?

Kirkliston Comunity Centre sits in the heart of the village and supports hundreds of locals every week using the centre its services and facilities. The Kirkliston Community Centre Association (Management Committee) is made up of local volunteers who oversee the programming of the centre and work closely with Community Learning and Development to keep the centre relevant, attractive and a great place for you, our locals to visit. In addition to the clubs and groups the management committee have also organised music events and band nights in the evenings to entertain and raise funds for the centre.

Kirkliston Community centre now hosts some great activities and groups specifically for the kids and youths from Kirkliston. The groups have seen a huge surge in popularity and we’re so glad to see as many young people attending. Thought we’d let you all know just what there is on at Kirkliston Community Centre.

A Man Of The Wood
T
he recent Greenkeepers Trophy Charity event at Dalmeny Estate Golf Club was dedicated to the memory of the late Ian Andrews, who passed away last year. Ian was a much loved and highly respected member of Dalmeny and Dundas Parks clubs. Funds were raised at the event, from members and friends and also from his friends at the VAT 69 Golf Society. A tree will be planted at Dundas Parks with a plaque in Ian’s memory and a special red oak sapling from Hazeltine, the venue of the 2016 Ryder Cup, will be nurtured for future planting. Dalmeny Golf Club intend to use funds for a memorial trophy. Ian was a cooper of international repute. A native of South Queensferry he worked initially at the cooperage at the King George distillery and subsequently the VAT 69. Ian went on to establish his own business when the distillery closed and his special presentation barrels were dispatched to all four corners of the world. His special skills as a craftsman resulted in commissions to supply many items for both HMS Victory and Discovery. In 2013 the Incorporation
of Coopers presented him with a special award from HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex for his significant contribution to coopering. The golf connection was further reinforced when Ian was commissioned to make commemorative barrels for the Ryder Cup in 2012 for the Medinah CC Heritage collection, Captains Watson and McGinlay at Gleneagles in 2014 and Hazeltine National Golf GC in 2016. These were fashioned from wood taken from a limb of the tree planted on the Dalmeny golf course by Dwight D Eisenhower during the second world war. Ian also hand crafted further barrels from the same wood for Lake Quivira GC, the Eisenhower Presidential Library, the USGA Museum and Lord and Lady Rosebery. The 2018 event was a poignant reminder of Ian’s passing but he is fondly remembered by all as a highly skilled craftsman, a faithful friend and a gentleman. His legacy lives on in his work. On the 20th and 21st October the Rotary Club of South Queensferry held a collection in aid of

his October we raised money for charity by selling gorgeous purple crocus bulbs as a symbol of all the children who have been vaccinated against polio. Over the years, the Rotary club has planted hundreds of crocuses around Queensferry and Kirkliston, but this year we wanted to raise awareness of polio by encouraging the local community to plant their own purple crocus bulbs. Our aim was to turn Queensferry and Kirkliston into a sea of purple next spring. The bright colour will remind the community of the support and encouragement they gave to End Polio Now’s mission to vaccinate every child against polio. Every £1 raised will be increased to £3 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 25 years ago polio struck 350,000 children each year. Thanks to the work of the Rotary Club and others, in 2018 only 12 cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan have been reported, and 0 in Nigeria. These are the only countries worldwide in which polio is still endemic.

Ernie Calls it a Day
O
ctober saw the local fire station saying goodbye to a familiar face and one of its longest serving retained firefighters. After 25 years, Ernie Hinks hung up his helmet and called time on his career with the service. Colleagues, friends and family
gathered at the station for a send off but not before organising a special treat. The current crew, pump and retired colleagues assembled for a photo shoot on Hawes Pier to celebrate his career. Congratulations Ernie!
