The Six Nations may have come to an end (Go Scotland!) and you may be left wondering what on earth you are going to do with your weekends now?

Myself and a small team recently took the reins over from Mike Smith, who was the previous Editor. Mike started the magazine five years ago and has grown it to be a well established and respected magazine within the local business community.

QUEENSFERRY LIFEBOAT FUNDRAISING BRANCH

n integral part of the organisation at Queensferry Lifeboat Station is the Fundraising Branch. It will come as no surprise to learn that just to operate the vital life saving service provided by the boat and crew at Queensferry RNLI costs many thousands of pounds each year. What may surprise some is that the RNLI is entirely funded from voluntary donations and legacies: there is no Local Authority or Government funding whatsoever. In order to raise these necessary funds, most lifeboat stations have a fundraising branch staffed by volunteers.

ing”. This hugely popular event has contributed almost £13,000.00 to our funds. Our most important event is the annual Open Day, held each year at the Station and on the Hawes Promenade. This is a joint effort with crew members and their families joining forces with the Fundraisers to organise the day which over the years has raised many thousands of pounds, every penny of which goes towards the operating costs of the Station. This year’s Open Day takes place on Sunday 1 July from 12 noon to 4pm and we welcome everyone to attend. We also have a souvenir shop at the Station; this is manned by dedicated volunteers all year round and is a significant source of vital funds.

This is where Queensferry Lifeboat Fundraising Branch plays a vital role. The small group of volunteers organise various fundraising activities throughout the year: examples are a Country Dance, a bucket collection at the Loony Dook, an annual Christmas Raffle, a mulled wine and home made soup stall at Queensferry’s Christmas celebrations, bucket collections at our local Tesco and Scotmid stores and other ventures. For the past two years we have been involved with other local groups in organising “Strictly Dundas”, an event based on television’s “Strictly Come Danc-

CleanFerry Takes on Clean Ups and Prevention

Introduction to the group CleanFerry operates under the GreenFerry Trust, aiming to reduce the amount of litter and waste in South Queensferry, inspire others to take action and to raise awareness of the littering issue. In 2009, the group won a Keep Scotland Beautiful Award for organising the biggest Clean Up in Scotland with over 1,300 people taking part. Big Clean Ups continued for three years before the group stepped back and the local schools took on their own organised Clean Ups. However, in recent years, members of the community identiﬁed that litter was once again becoming an issue in the village and the CleanFerry group was relaunched. After just a year of action, and using the Litter Pick Plus Toolkit for guidance and inspiration, the group now has a core of 14 volunteers, led by David Hutcheson of the GreenFerry Trust, taking regular action in the village.

Taking Action Most of the CleanFerry volunteers meet every six weeks to complete a major litter blitz of a local known hot spot. Additionally, all of the team work on their own or in small teams to adopt a litter trail, which they cover weekly or fortnightly. This provides the highvisibility presence which is seen by all members of their community and is the behavioural ‘nudge’ to remind people that littering is not acceptable. Alongside the work that each volunteer carries out, David Hutcheson and David McGuinness (co-leader) work with other community groups and businesses to align resources, recognising that there is strength in numbers. Queensferry Parish Church Eco-congregation and Community Group, and Friends of Ferry Glen have all joined with CleanFerry to reduce litter and show that by working together they can change the social norm around littering.

CleanFerry Takes on Clean Ups and Prevention David commented:

Communication stories and that this is vital to motivate, inspire and educate the wider community in South Queensferry, the group continues to expand its communications reach. Using local press has been key to sharing their message locally and Cleanferry has already featured as front page news on the Queensferry Gazette. A Facebook page has been created with advice from Keep Scotland Beautiful, so that the group is accessible to people looking for more information about them. The group has plans to invest in a banner and posters utilising the advice highlighted in the Litter Pick Plus Toolkit to advertise their Clean Ups to other community members. They have also purchased high visibility jackets complete with personalised logo to make them instantly recognisable and further ‘nudge’ local people to more responsibly deal with their litter. Community events are also key to their success and, as the planned in the village, with a photographer, birthday cake and bin bag display, showcasing the group’s achievement of 1,000 bags of litter removed in a year.

Campaigning

The group is extremely ambitious to build on the work of its volunteers, reaching out further to local businesses and schools, to engage the whole community with litter awareness. David Hutcheson approached Scotmid, Orocco Pier and McDonalds, amongst others, encouraging them to maintain the cleanliness of their sites and most have complied with this request. Three of the group members have made a commitment to design and deliver “litter – it’s a messy business” workshops to S1 pupils at the local high school and are following on with litter awareness presentations to the three primary schools in the area.

The engagement with the pupils during the High School workshops has been very positive. The children are open and honest about their own littering habits and those of their peers and provide us with a good insight into the minds of young people. The kids regularly quote peer pressure and not being seen to be ‘cool’ for reasons not to use litter bins.

When asked what he thinks is the key to litter prevention, David answered:

There is no simple answer. The big challenge is to change the culture in this country where littering is acceptable. Lack of litter bins and the like are really smoke screens to the underlying issues. Using an analogy many years ago, drink driving was almost tolerated, but the culture has changed and culprits now receive the appropriate sentences. The change in attitude was not only driven by severe penalties, but by generating greater awareness of the dangers and impacts of drink driving. Unfortunately, we have a signiﬁcant minority of people in all our communities who for various reasons have few environmental values and they will not change their ways so we need to focus our malleable to change. The main plank of our anti-litter strategy will be to educate all young people on the wider impacts of littering in the community. Hopefully through these young people we can lead them to become better citizens and help discourage bad behaviour amongst the wider family group and friends.

A Busy Cruise Liner Season Ahead A total of 24 cruise liners will visit South Queensferry in 2018, with some staying for two days. The Royal Princess (making the first of 11 visits on a series of 12 day round Britain cruises from Southampton) is the first ship of the season arriving with 3600 passengers on 10th May. A full list of arrivals is produced below.

As usual, local welcome volunteers from the CruiseForth Project will meet each of the tenders arriving at Hawes Pier providing them with local maps of South Queensferry and advice on how they may best spend their day ashore. Keep an eye on the CruiseForth Facebook page for more up to date information as the ships start

to arrive. Overall 113 ships will visit the River Forth this season, with 40 of those sailing under the Bridges to Rosyth. The remainder arrive at Leith or Newhaven.

Feast of food and drink on the menu alongside watersports fun at Port Edgar Marina Open Weekend

his year’s Open Weekend at Port Edgar Marina will feature a feast of new food and drink treats alongside its amazing array of watersports fun, thanks to the addition of Canteen Street Food Festival, from pop-up specialists Rogue Village.

The Open Weekend, which takes place over Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 May at the largest watersports and activity centre in Scotland, will feature 100s of 60-minute on-the-water taster sessions for families. Expert instructors from Port Edgar Watersports will be showcasing everything from paddleboarding to kayaking. New for this year, the marina team has developed its food and drink offering by joining forces with Rogue Village. Renowned for Canteen Street Food Festival at Archerfield Walled Garden in East Lothian, Rogue Village will be cooking up a storm of street food stands, DJs and family-friendly activity for the event. The Marina’s own Down the Hatch café will be joined by vendors such as ShrimpWreck, Chick & Pea, Meat Stack, pizzas from Pizza Geeks and The Big Blu, Spice Pots, Moo Pie Gelato, cocktails from Herringbone, Poco Prosecco, Ferry Brewery and delicious baking from Mimi’s Bakehouse. 18

Less than 30 minutes drive from the city centre, on the southern banks of the Firth of Forth, Port Edgar Marina boasts stunning views of the Queensferry Crossing and the Kingdom of Fife beyond.

More than 5,000 visitors attended last year’s Open Weekend to try their hand at a myriad of activities on and off the water and to discover the on-going multi-million-pound development of the marina, which will soon include the addition of a 200-capacity restaurant, Scotts, which opens this summer.

The dry land activities promise to be equally exciting, including loads of kids’ activities - with arts and crafts, science and slime making with Be Experimental, a mobile cave and face painting. There will also be live music from Four Corners DJs. As one of the east coast’s largest marinas with berths for over 300 boats, Port Edgar is also home of Port Edgar Yacht Club and a number of major marine businesses.

he new and improved Hawthorn Bank Park is set for another £20,000 make-over with Phase two planned for completion this summer.

Juliette Lee chairs the small team at GreenFerry Trust and they have been working hard to raise more funds since the £7000 transformation in May 2016. “Phase two is a much bigger project and involves further design and landscaping to make Hawthorn Bank even more appealing. In the future, I hope the area is used for all manner of things, from yoga and outdoor theatre to community picnics.” The project has been supported by local businesses such as Edinburgh Airport, Scotmid, Rotary Club and Almond Partnership. However, GreenFerry are £3,500 short of the final sum needed for the works and are appealing to local

Kirkliston Comunity Centre sits in the heart of the village and supports hundreds of locals every week using the centre its services and facilities. The Kirkliston Community Centre Association (Management Committee) is made up of local volunteers who oversee the programming of the centre and work closely with Community Learning and Development to keep the centre relevant, attractive and a great place for you, our locals to visit. In addition to the clubs and groups the management committee have also organised music events and band nights in the evenings to entertain and raise funds for the centre. Kirkliston Community Centre are looking for new people to join the management committee. They meet once a month for a couple of hours so it won't take up too much of your time. FERRY FAIR First, a piece just giving some basic information about this year’s Fair…… The Ferry Fair Committee looks forward to welcoming friends old and new to this year’s Ferry Fair week celebrations which run from Monday 6 August 2018 to Saturday 11 August 2018. This will be the 82nd year of the Ferry Fair. Full details of all the activities planned throughout the week will be displayed in our programme which will be published well in advance of the Fair.

The Ferry Fair Queen and the Main Court characters will be provided by pupils from Queensferry Primary School, all the names will be listed in our programme together with the names of the Posy Girls and Escorts who are pupils from all three Primary Schools.

One of the highlights of Ferry Fair week is the Tour of the Burgh and the Queen’s Procession which kick off the celebrations on Ferry Fair Saturday, 11 August 2018. The Parade of the Burgh starts off from Burgess Road with the judging of the decorated floats and vehicles with all the vehicles, motor cycles etc led by the Queen and her court moving off to tour the Burgh at around 10.30am. These all return to Burgess Road to be joined by the marching bands and walking groups for the final procession led by our Town Crier down to the High Street stage leaving at around 11.15am. Once all the vehicles have passed through the High Street to Edinburgh Road they disperse and that should be just after 12 noon.

Then, an appeal for help…… We are sure the whole community of the Ferry and district is aware that planning, preparing for and putting on the Ferry Fair each year doesn’t just happen by itself. In addition to the work of the committee, help and assistance in different forms from local individuals, organisations and businesses is essential to keep the Fair going and to maintain the standards which we all now come to expect.

So, what the committee is appealing for are decorated floats, cars, vans, motor cycles, bicycles, any interesting or unusual vehicles such as vintage cars and also walking groups who would like to take part in this colourful and fun-packed and of course important aspect of the Ferry Fair. FORTH DIMENSION

ORTH DIMENSION, South Queensferry’s very own Musical Theatre group for the past thirty-nine years, for many years performed an annual Musical production and also our Concert Party travelled about locally to entertain members of local Clubs, Societies and also residents of Care Homes and long-term Hospital Wards. Currently we perform an annual Concert in the spring and a Pantomime at the beginning of December.

Rehearsals have begun for our Spring Concert which will take place at the Priory Church – details of dates and ticket contacts to be announced later - follow us on our Facebook page – Forth Dimension Musical Productions for those.

We have a mixed age membership – Forth Dimension Juniors (9yrs – 17 yrs) and our Adult section, all working together, meeting for rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 7.00pm until 8.30pm for the Juniors, with the Adult Section continuing until 9.30pm, plus a few Sunday afternoons.

Rehearsals for the Panto commence in August, so if you would like to boost our membership (especially the Adult Section) you would be most welcome to join us. If acting isn’t your thing, join up for next year’s Concert, a solely a singing affair.
