Garden View – Fancy foliage

We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they’re relatively short-lived makes them extra-special.

But my garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own.

Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November, and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it.

Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer.

It like soil which doesn’t dry out so a pebble mulch will work brilliantly, and it complements the plant.

Hostas have truly beautiful leaves, but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of hosta-chomping super slugs. I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Mostly though, I now plant them in pots armed with copper rings. Slugs hate copper and my hostas can grow (mostly) unmolested.

Hostas do like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well...preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade.

I have had much more success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring.

New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax has bold, dramatic fountains of spiky purple foliage is my absolute favourite foliage plant. It isn’t frost-hardy, so during extended sub-zero temperatures it will need protecting. If you’re concerned, choose the much hardier green variety…but honestly, the purple on is worth the risk.

Many people overlook grasses when they think about foliage but there are some seriously attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus.” The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February.

Finally, if you have the space, for a real ‘in-yourface’ fancy foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea.” Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around kneeheight each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. Now that’s really fancy foliage.

Children’s Eye Health

Recently we have had the pleasure of visiting a number of primary school settings across the community to speak to the children about eye health.

Paediatric eye care is more important than ever as post pandemic we are seeing more children become myopic (short-sighted). Studies show this is expected to increase significantly with children taking part in more near-work activities and spending less time outdoors. The great news is that there are steps parents and children can take to help combat this…

Book a sight test

Even if you don’t have any concerns. Some eye conditions do not display any signs or symptoms so the only way to know for sure is to see an Optometrist. An eye examination is a comprehensive check that looks at multiple aspects of vision and eye health. In some cases it can also pick up other, more generalised health problems. A sight test can be carried out by an Optometrist on a child of any age (even babies) and is inclusive of any SEND or other communication requirements.

Get out side

Studies show that being outside supports

healthy, growing eyes. Just remember to wear sunglasses if it’s sunny (eyes need UV protection just like skin).

Eat a healthy, colourful diet

Our eyes require macular pigments known as carotenoids to be healthy. The best natural food sources of macular pigments are green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach, and brightly coloured fruits and vegetables like peppers, sweetcorn and red grapes. We accumulate these protective pigments, so the more of them we eat, the better our protection. Time to dust off the smoothie maker!

Take screen breaks

Screens are ubiquitous in modern life, we get it, but taking regular breaks can make all the difference. Eye muscles require stretching just like any others, so encourage children to look up and away from the screen frequently.

Myopia Management

For children with developing myopia, there are now a range of eyewear solutions that can slow the progress. It’s new and very exciting technology. To understand more about myopia management we recommend speaking to your eye health professional (or us!)

Make every millisecond count for your business’s website

Imagine your website greeting visitors with the same warmth and firmness as a handshake. That’s the kind of first impression you want to make in the digital world, where Google’s research indicates you have a mere 50 milliseconds to shine. Blink, and the moment’s gone.

But here’s the good news: a website that’s quick to load, easy to navigate, and pleasing to the eye can make that fraction of a second count. It’s about creating an online space that radiates trust and professionalism from the very first glance.

At Digi Soci, we’re all about making those milliseconds work in your favour. With years of experience tucked under our belts, we’re the go-to local marketing gurus in Somerset. We believe in keeping things simple, setting achievable goals, and then smashing them, rather than overwhelming you with technical jargon.

Our mission is clear: to ensure your business is represented accurately and memorably. We’re here to make sure your existing and future customers carry a lasting image of your brand. And we achieve this by maximizing every penny of your marketing budget to deliver results that you can see and feel.

So, why not give us a ring or drop by our website? Let us show you how we turn brief digital encounters into lasting business relationships. Call us on 01934 268061 or head over to www.digisoci.co.uk/contact-us/ to get the ball rolling.

Let’s create a website that not only meets expectations but exceeds them, making every millisecond — and every visitor — count.

Shower, walk-in bath, or wet room? We can help you decide

Choosing a new bathroom involves understanding your bathing needs but there are various options to consider when deciding to alter your bathroom.

One option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower, this is suited to those with limited mobility. Slip-resistant shower trays, accessories, and grab rails are also available to provide further safety. However, some people still prefer having a bath to a shower so this is when we would recommend a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats and some even have jacuzzi functions.

The third option is a wet room which eliminates obstacles with slip-resistant flooring making them ideal for wheelchair users and caregivers. It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose but at AHM Installations, we have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. We provide FREE quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look.

Call now 01934 805862 to request a brochure or to find out more.

The fence that repairs itself

If you scratch or cut Colourfence, the ingenious zinc element in the Zincalume steel reacts with moisture to form a protective barrier to prevent any corrosion with no action needed from you.

STRONG, SECURE & BUILT TO LAST!

Colourfence are transforming gardens across Somerset!

It may do “exactly what it says on the tin” but let’s face it, treating a timber fence can never be called fun! In fact, owning a timber fence isn’t much fun either with costly, time consuming maintenance and repairs almost every year.

Finally, the alternative to timber fencing…our fence goes up and stays up, resisting wind gusts of up to 130mph!

Colourfence fencing solutions are made from innovative Colorbond steel, virtually maintenance free with an occasional wash down with water to keep it looking as good as new - so you never need to pick up that paintbrush again!, Guaranteed not to rot, warp, chip or peel for 25 years.

Available in a variety of heights and colours with or without trellis, our skilled installation team will make short work of transforming your garden.

The best news is the pricing is just as attractive, starting costs are in line with comparable traditional systems but offer the ongoing peace of mind that your investment will continue to save time and money year after year.

For those of us who want a low maintenance garden, Colourfence promises a lifetime of hassle-free enjoyment.

We are on a mission to protect our customers from hackers, scams and viruses

As technology advances, so do the tactics of scammers and hackers. We are witnessing a sharp increase in the creation of new, deceptive, scam techniques and infections, that we suspect are both designed and manufactured with the help of AI tools – artificial intelligence – to make them leaps and bounds more convincing than ever seen before. Increasing numbers of people are being scammed because it is now harder than ever to know what is and isn’t genuine.

Therefore, we our redoubling our efforts to strengthen the protection of equipment for our customers. The techniques we use to keep our customers safe have continuously evolved over the years to defend against threats as they emerge, and we offer and encourage a straightforward home visit whereby we can review existing equipment and offer help and advice as to what should be strengthened to stave off scammers and infections.

Often, upon attending a customer for unrelated reasons, we realize the customer was scammed, or is infected, despite them having not realised it themselves – often relying on big name anti-virus, that doesn’t always do the job. The most common in recent months is a well-hidden infection that permits scammers to watch the screen in secret. This is often forgotten – that being scammed doesn’t always involve even knowing that it happened. So, with both prevention and dis-infection in mind, we do encourage those unsure about the concreteness of their online security to book us in for a review, at your home or place or work.

All 60s/70s Night in aid Of Weston Hospicecare

We raised the fantastic total of £3,525 at the All 60s/70s Night in aid of Weston Hospicecare on Friday 10th May at Weston super Mare Football Club.

A big thank you to everybody that attended on the night.

It takes the total I have raised to £19,275 over the years I have been organising the event.

I would like to thank the top 60s/70s Tribute Band Locarno Beat, the superb female vocalist Chrystal Bliss, Scotts Services, Philip Cocks who organised all the video footage, the hospice volunteers who sold over £500 worth of raffle tickets on the night. Niel Ann and all the bar staff at Weston super Mare Football Club, Dana of Mug Express who provided the medallions for the best dressed in 60s/70s gear, Terry Carter who took all the photographs on the night and all the local and national companies who donated over £1000 worth of raffle prizes.

The amount raised was massively helped by sponsorship from 6 local companies: Travelbillity, Groves Family Funeral Directors, Mendip Consrvatories, Brooking Ruse Accountants, Davan Caravans and Motorhomes, Rachel J Homes Estate Agents, and a special mention for C & D Associates.

We used Central Roofing to take down an old flat roof and install another on our business premises at Knight Brothers Garage. The company was very reliable, they turned up when they said they would, the guys that did the work were very tidy and efficient. The work was completed in the time frame they set…we are more than pleased with the finished job. Karen
