Garden View Clematis, often hailed as the “Queen of the Climbers”, is a beloved fixture in many UK gardens. Its enchanting flowers, ranging from delicate, starshaped blossoms to bold, dramatic blooms, can transform fences, walls, and trellises into living art. But clematis, like many plants, needs pruning, and understanding the pruning requirements of your particular clematis will depend on its pruning group. Clematis are categorized into three main pruning groups: 1, 2, and 3. These groups are determined by the plant’s flowering time and the age of the flowering wood. Group 1 clematis bloom early in the year, flowering on the previous year’s growth. These varieties, like the alpine clematis, produce flowers in late spring and are generally the least demanding in terms of pruning. Pruning, if necessary, should be done immediately after flowering. The goal is to remove dead or weak stems and to shape the plant, but heavy pruning is not needed. If left unpruned, these clematis can become a tangle of old wood with few flowers.

Group 2 clematis flower in late spring or early summer on short shoots developing from the previous year’s growth and often have a second, less vigorous flush in late summer on the current year’s growth. Examples include the popular varieties like ‘Nelly Moser’ and ‘Miss Bateman’. Pruning for Group 2 should be light, focusing on removing dead and weak stems in late winter or early spring, so February is the perfect time. You can also lightly prune after the first flowering to encourage a more robust second bloom. Group 3 clematis flower on the current year’s growth, producing blooms from mid to late summer until the first frost. This group includes varieties like ‘Jackmanii’ and ‘Sweet Autumn Clematis’. They require more extensive pruning, cut back almost to ground level (15-30 cm above the ground) in February. This encourages strong new growth and a profusion of flowers at a manageable height. When pruning, always use clean, sharp tools to make clean cuts. This prevents damage to the plant and reduces the risk of disease. After pruning, it’s beneficial to apply a balanced fertilizer and mulch to provide nutrients and maintain soil moisture. By Rachael Leverton

Colourfence are transforming gardens across Somerset!

The fence that repairs itself If you scratch or cut Colourfence, the ingenious zinc element in the Zincalume steel reacts with moisture to form a protective barrier to prevent any corrosion with no action needed from you.

It may do “exactly what it says on the tin” but let’s face it, treating a timber fence can never be called fun! In fact, owning a timber fence isn’t much fun either with costly, time consuming maintenance and repairs almost every year. Finally, the alternative to timber fencing…our fence goes up and stays up, resisting wind gusts of up to 130mph! Colourfence fencing solutions are made from innovative Colorbond steel, virtually maintenance free with an occasional wash down with water to keep it looking as good as new - so you never need to pick up that paintbrush again!, Guaranteed not to rot, warp, chip or peel for 25 years. Available in a variety of heights and colours with or without trellis, our skilled installation team will make short work of transforming your garden. The best news is the pricing is just as attractive, starting costs are in line with comparable traditional systems but offer the ongoing peace of mind that your investment will continue to save time and money year after year. For those of us who want a low maintenance garden, Colourfence promises a lifetime of hassle-free enjoyment.

The Impact of Winter Weather for Those with Hearing Loss A warm welcome from Mia, Claire and Toby at Meadows & Wood Hearing Care Specialists. We are slowly coming to the end of the winter, and enjoying spending more time outside. However, the winter can pose unique challenges for us all. Research indicates that colder days have placed those with hearing loss at a higher risk of loneliness, emphasising the importance of looking out for those around us. Hearing loss impacts approximately 30-35% of adults aged 65 to 75, and over 50% for those aged 75 and above. When combined with the fact that 1.4 million older people in the UK often feel lonely, the risk of isolation becomes even more pronounced during winter. Recent data from the UK reveals that using hearing aids can reduce depression symptoms, enhance sleep quality, and reduce evening exhaustion. These factors can directly impact an individual’s ability to socialize with others, which can reduce feelings of loneliness. Our Tips to Combat Loneliness: 1. Community Engagement: Join in community events, clubs, and gatherings specifically designed for those with hearing loss. Creating inclusive spaces fosters connections and combats isolation. 2. Check-In Campaigns: Establish regular check-ins with elderly neighbours, or family members. A simple phone call or visit can make a world of difference during the darker, colder months. 3. Attend a Hearing Check-Up: Encourage individuals with hearing loss to attend a hearing check-up, where they can explore their hearing aids options. A new hearing aid might be that boost of confidence that you need. Please do not hesitate to get in touch, our team are here to help you with any issues you may have. If you or your loved one are struggling with hearing, and you would like to know how we can help, we are here for you at home or in North Somerset’s only full time and fully independent audiology clinic. Is your load unbalanced? I was really encouraged the other day when a customer said they looked forward to reading my little write up here every month. So, with renewed vigor, I am now sitting in front of my computer wondering what I can bring to you this February. Of course, the strange thing about editorial is that you write it a month before its published. So, it’s like projecting your mind into the future! But just for once I’m going to look back. The last year for us was probably one of the busiest we’ve had, and we are so pleased that, despite having longer waiting times than we used to, our customers are still delighted with the service we offer. Fortunately, the phone issues we had at the end of last year have been resolved and the best way to contact us is probably still by phone. You can however email us as well and please remember to leave your contact number. One of the things we are getting a lot of calls for now is fairly new washing machines not spinning at the end of the wash cycle. This is quite often not a fault with the machine, in fact it’s the machine protecting itself. Over the last few years machines have changed and it’s now very unusual for them to do a dance across the kitchen. So, if your machine doesn’t spin out, or if your clothes are much soggier than you expected, it may well be that you have an unbalanced load. This can occur on a small load as well and can often be when we are washing bathmats or dog blankets. So, don’t despair. The first thing to do is to try rearranging the clothes or adding a dry bath towel into a small load. If this doesn’t work, you can check by taking the clothes out of the machine and putting it on to a spin only cycle. If it spins ok, then it’s most likely your load was unbalanced. Again, just to remind you we are here for your domestic appliance needs, repairs, and new machines. Give us a call… 01934 517657.

Staying Independent and Safe in your Home Making sure your home fits your needs is vital, especially for seniors or those who might have trouble getting around. The ability to navigate safely within the house profoundly influences an individual’s dignity and overall well-being. If everyday tasks such as entering and exiting the house, using the bathroom, or preparing a meal become challenging, it’s crucial to consider making improvements. Despite concerns about costs, financial assistance is available through a government backed Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), which can provide up to £30,000 for home alterations. This grant aims to help individuals with qualifying conditions remain independent and safe. Whether it involves renovating a bathroom, making the kitchen more accessible, or converting a room into a wetroom or bedroom, the DFG offers valuable support. To apply, individuals can contact their local council or visit www.gov. uk/disabled-facilities-grants for more information. If eligible for a grant finding a trusted company to conduct the renovation is the next step. AHM Installations Ltd are accessible bathing specialists and have been creating bespoke bathrooms and wetrooms across the UK for over 24 years. They are offer ‘bath out shower in’ options, or they can create a full wetroom or install a walk-in bath. AHM understands it can feel daunting and that customers may have concerns before undertaking home renovations, but their friendly team guides customers through every step. Home surveyors visit to comprehend the challenges and they will assess the available space and provide a customised, budgetfriendly solution. LOCAL EXPERT PAGE

Beware of the ads at the top of search results We have seen a marked increase in people searching for a genuine company’s website via a search engine only to click on an advert made to look like this company, but is in fact a third party trying to piggy back onto what could be a free service in order to add on a fee. A typical example of this is when people are trying to apply for a travel visa which is free, but the third party takes all the information and then charges a processing fee on top. Other adverts can be more similar, as scammers are paying to be at the top of search results, only to try and extract personal data. If you are asked to fill in a form, be very careful who you are giving the information to. Are they asking for too much information that you would not expect, or does something not feel right? If so, I would check with a friend or family member before proceeding. Another thing to watch out for are emails from somebody you know asking you to purchase gift vouchers - this will mean that their email has been hacked and the scammer is trying to catch out their contacts. If you have been the subject of a scam or been hacked, and would like your equipment to be checked and advice given, please see our advert on this page. We can visit you at your home and make sure all your equipment is secure. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299 or email sales@e-cps.co.uk
