Look to the future in faith believing the best is yet to come Invariably, it’s only when we’re the other side of our challenging circumstances that we can truly see the positive aspects and purpose of our journey.

We are told many times in the Bible that God is good and to believe this we have to have faith in Him when we’re faced with what we would call bad experiences. I’m sure like me, despite the COVID pandemic being one of the worst experiences of my life you can reflect on some of the positive things that have come out of it and a renewed appreciation of life, health and family.

At Destiny Church we have just finished a message series called Jireh where we’ve been looking at two characteristics of Jireh - the God of more than enough and the God Who sees to it!

As we continue to go through one of the most challenging seasons of our lifetime it’s so good to know that Jireh is still all-knowing, all-present and all-powerful. We might not understand some of His ways and therefore we will have many ‘whys’ but it doesn’t change the fact that He remains faithful to His promises.

One of those promises in Romans 8:28 is that He is working all things together for good. It might not look good or feel good but it’s working for good.

We’ve been reminded of priorities in life and that life is so precious and how we need to make the most of every opportunity to live each day as if it was our last. We’ve been more mindful of others and have shown care to those around us. We’re more appreciative of the freedoms we had before lockdown and I for one, will never take them for granted again! So all in all good has come out of something that has been so bad and my hope is that we won’t fully go back to how we were.

I pray that we will look to the future in faith believing the best is yet to come!

ColourFence Fencing - Keeping Hedgehogs safe in your garden ColourFence are often asked about creating hedgehog highways in our fences and we do so gladly!

There’s no better time to do our bit to make sure our gardens are hedgehog-friendly and, for that matter, are safe havens for all wildlife. During the long days of summer, hedgehogs will often venture out before it’s fully dark and activity an hour or so before and after sunrise/set in the summer is not unusual.

Hedgehog Highways Hedgehogs are known as the gardeners’ friend but their numbers are in decline so it’s important that we do everything we can to help them. Providing shelter, wildlife rich gardens and food are great ways to help them thrive but helping them access your garden is hugely important too. Hedgehogs travel around one mile every night in search of food and a mate so ensure hedgehogs can pass freely through your garden by creating Hedgehog Highways – a small opening between your garden boundaries (a space of just 13 x 13cm is enough for any hog to get in and out of your garden!).

Feeding hedgehogs Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Specialist hedgehog food is also recommended and can be bought from wildlife food suppliers.

Leave out water - Never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea; instead simply add a shallow bowl of water in the shade (preferably near the hedgehog hole).

Leaving clean water in small dishes around the garden is good for lots of wildlife if they pass through, especially in very cold months where most water is frozen at night.

Check for hedgehogs before using lawn mowers or strimmers. Check compost heaps before raking them over.

Build bonfires close to the time of lighting, and check before you set them ablaze. Avoid the use of pesticides, as they can be poisonous to hedgehogs.

Doing some of these tasks won’t just enable these cute mammals to make full use of your garden, but it could save their lives. Hedgehogs play a vital part in our ecosystem, they are deeply rooted in our culture and they will help protect your flowers as they eat snails, slugs and other pests.

this was banned. Thereafter the design of men’s swimwear was equally constrained by the need for modesty and it was illegal in most places for men to have a bare torso. The typical costume resembled an undergarment with sleeves down to the elbow and the legs down to below the knee and was usually made of wool. Some beaches also required men to have an additional piece of fabric covering their genital area. Although the length of the legs and arms became shorter over time, it was not until 1936 that men were allowed to swim bare-chested at the Olympics and 1948 before briefs were allowed.

The development of both men and women’s bathing suits owes much to the use of new materials for which we must be very grateful. No more wet wool!!

Those of you of a certain age may well remember knitted swimming costumes that sagged once they got wet. Whoever thought wool was a good material for swimwear was wrong! Having said that, everyone today would recognise what they were. If you look back at what women were wearing in previous centuries, however, you would probably not believe that their dresses were, indeed, what they wore to go into the sea.

In the 1800’s sea-bathing became increasingly popular for women but modesty was all-important and bathing dresses were designed to cover most of the body. At this time a typical costume would have been a voluminous wool dress worn over bloomers which were named after, but not invented by, Amelia Bloomer. By the end of the century the dresses were shorter and would have been worn over knee-length bloomers with long black stockings and accessorised with bathing slippers and fancy caps.

Sporting Fest Saturday 14th August: Sporting Weston are a local football club that play in the Weston and district league.

The club is non profit making and relies on fundraising to sustain its future and provide a sporting activity for the local community. To help raise money for the club they have decided to run a family fun day event at their home ground at Kewstoke village hall.

Marathon Around The Pier Thursday 19th August: Local man Paul Hobbs, aged 72, will walk a marathon around Weston’s Grand Pier, two years to the day of having lifesaving heart treatment in aid of The British Heart Foundation. The 26 mile walk will match 26 years of charity

“He has improved at such a rate that he has become one of our team’s most outstanding players. He is a skilful, quick left sided midfielder and likes to use his skills and tricks to get past opponents.

“But for me one of his standout characteristics is his personality. He is such a happy, kind young man who will help anyone when needed.”

Volunteering for Scouts We rely on people like you playing their part to give young people the opportunities they need. As with many aspects of life, scouting has suffered due to the lockdowns caused by the pandemic.

Weekly face to face meetings, camping experiences and fun days out have all been cancelled due to the restrictions.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers are slowly starting to come back following the hiatus and although young people are keen to re-join the adventure, the movement has lost many of its adult volunteers, who are essential to run the exciting activities and experiences for the children.

A Feat of Endurance Swimming the English Channel is still an amazing achievement mumbles, and loss of gross motor co-ordination the stumbles. At this point the shiver response stops and the heart might become arrhythmic, leading to sudden death.

Afterdrop - While the environment is cold, the body protects vital organs by constricting blood vessels in the skin and extremities. When the swimmer exits the water, blood rapidly returns to the extremities, causing bright pink skin, and a correspondingly dangerous drop in core temperature.

For an official channel attempt, no aids to heat retention, such as a wetsuit or neoprene cap are allowed, so these are real issues that any potential channel swimmer has to overcome.

Weight issues - Many budding channel swimmers gain extra body fat deliberately prior to their attempt. This comes with certain risks: hernia, acid reflux, and gout have all been recorded, and these tend to be reversible. But there is also a condition called swimming-induced pulmonary oedema, where the lungs fill with fluid, making it difficult to breath.

On August 24th, 1875, Captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel without the use of artificial aids. Since that time, the channel swim has become the pinnacle achievement for an open-water swimmer. But the journey to success is complex, and most people who attempt it fail.

There are many factors that combine to make the Channel swim so difficult, but the cold has to be number one. Ironically, super-fit swimmers with lots of muscle and little body fat get cold more quickly, so are more likely to suffer from hypothermia.

Unpredictable Channel tides and extreme weather conditions mean that swimmers need to book pilots almost two years in advance. Pilots are people with years of experience of tides and weather, who are skilled in escorting swimmers and evaluating when to pull them out of the water.

The health risks of swimming the channel are high: Hypothermia - Known as the ‘umbles’: Cold - the grumbles; loss of fine motor co-ordination - the fumbles; the slowing of thinking and speech - the 16 | www.localreach.co.uk

Seasickness - This can afflict swimmers as badly as it does boat passengers. In addition, repeatedly swallowing salt water which often contains excrement, is guaranteed to induce vomiting.

Jellyfish - The zone between the two shipping lanes in the channel is full of jellyfish, some of which have a particularly nasty sting!

Ships - To swim from England to France you have to swim across the shipping lanes. In normal, nonCOVID times there are over 600 commercial ship movements and 80 to 100 ferry crossings between Dover and Calais every DAY - and it’s the job of the pilot boat to keep the swimmer out of the path of these vessels.

In addition, swimmers are alone in their heads for long periods so face huge a huge mental challenge during a feat that can last an average of 13-15 hours but may be far longer.

Windows 11 is confirmed to release later this year and will come as a free upgrade for Windows 10 users. It will be important to perform the upgrade in a proper and safe way, as to avoid data loss.

How to look after your precious rug There are many types of rugs, from modern classic contemporary to oriental and antique. These maybe made from wool, cotton, man made fibres or silk. Rugs are wonderful at brightening an otherwise plain room and bringing warmth and colour.

Like all carpets they lose their lustre over time with daily use. Fortunately, with the right care they can redeem their vibrancy even after many years of use. Here are just some simple tips to help you care for your rug: 1. The most important thing you can do is vacuum it weekly. Rugs fill with dust and grit so turn it over and vacuum the back of your rug, this will vibrate all the grit to the surface. Then follow this by vacuuming the face surface. If it is small enough try beating or shaking it as it all helps.

2. Check the label. There is often a label underneath your rug which will tell you what it is made from and may offer cleaning advice. Cotton, Wool and Silk rugs will need very careful cleaning and you may prefer to use a professional specialist rug cleaner.

3. Spots and stains. Accidental spillages are best dealt with whilst they are still wet so blot them with a white terry cloth. Always apply a tamping motion and never rub as it may damage the pile and spread the spillage. Next dampen a cloth with cold water and blot again, but first test in a corner to make sure the colours don’t run. Rugs are often coloured with natural dyes which are not colour-fast.

4. Move your furniture. Heavy furniture can flatten and damage the pile over time. To prevent this, move your furniture a little every few months to even the wear.

5. Keep out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can fade the bright colours of your rug, keep away from windows and if that is not possible then rotate the rug so it has an even fade.

by Penny Vincenzi Sometimes we’re daunted by the thickness of a book and wonder whether we should invest our time in something so enormous? Well 880 pages is certainly a big commitment. Anyone who has seen Vincenzi’s books on the shelves in a bookshop or library may well have felt a little intimidated. But Vincenzi really is worth the time and energy, though you may need a cheat sheet to keep track of all the characters!

An alibi. A simple alibi. That’s all Brad Channing asks of his wife, Francesca. She simply has to say that he spent the day in the country with her, and so could not have been in London. All a mother wants for her family is for them to be happy and safe. If Brad is convicted, it would be the end for all of them. His business would fall apart and the comfortable life they’ve built for their family would be destroyed.

Like her other novels The Dilemma is ultimately a family saga. It may be set against a backdrop of wealth and business success on a scale that most of us can only dream of, but it shows that no matter your position or status in life we will all fight for the same things when it comes to those we love.

Tonkatsu Pork A taste of Japan

Preparation time: 15-20 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 eggs, beaten 4 tbsp flour 75g panko breadcrumbs 4 thick pork loin steaks Oil for frying (sunflower or ground nut) ½ Chinese cabbage, finely shredded Salt Freshly ground black pepper For the Tonkatsu sauce: 125g tomato ketchup 75ml sake or rice wine (dry sherry makes a good substitute).

2tbsp Worcester sauce 2 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 clove of garlic, finely grated 1tsp finely grated fresh root ginger 1 tsp Japanese mustard (Dijon makes a good substitute) 1tbsp mirin 1tbsp sugar Method: The Sauce Place all the sauce ingredients into a small saucepan and stir well. allow to simmer for about 5 minutes or until the garlic and ginger are soft and the sauce has a good pouring consistency. When its ready strain it through a fine sieve and allow to cool to room temperature.

The Pork You’ll need four plates. Pour the flour (seasoned with salt and pepper) on to the first; pour the beaten eggs on to the second and the breadcrumbs on to the third. NOTE - Panko breadcrumbs are crisper than normal breadcrumbs. The recipe will work with normal breadcrumbs, but you might prefer to use finely crushed cornflakes or crackers.

Coat each pork loin generously in the seasoned flour, then dip it into the beaten egg so its covered, then finally coat each loin steak in breadcrumbs.

Transfer them all to the fourth plate.

Pour enough oil into a frying pan to shallow fry the pork steaks and allow the pan to heat up over a moderate heat. When hot enough add the steaks and fry until golden on each side (4-5 minutes per side). Don’t overcrowd the pan as this will cause the steaks to steam and the breadcrumbs will become soggy.

Place the cooked steaks on a plate and cut into thick slices. Drizzle the Tonkatsu sauce over the steaks and serve with some shredded cabbage and Japanese pickles.

Three Top Summer Kitchen Tips from Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers 1. Tear basil rather than cutting it?

Chefs often say that you must tear basil, rather than cut it with a knife, to get the best flavour. Nope.

The flavours in basil are primarily contained within the cells of the leaf. If you tear it, it tends to come apart between the cells but if you cut the leaf, you will break open the cells releasing the flavour. This makes the most difference when you are using the basil raw eg in a tomato salad.

Best to wash the basil, pat dry with paper towels, and remove the leaves from the stem. Stack several leaves together and roll into a cylinder, then cut crossways into thin strips.

2. Should I use foil on the base of my Oven?

Many people line their grill pan or the bottom of the oven with aluminium foil to keep their cookers cleaner. This becomes heavily coated in grease and smells revolting! But it actually damages the enamel in the grill pan and on the base of the oven. The foil creates a super heating effect by reflecting the heat back onto the base of the oven or grill pan which then causes enamel damage.

I recommend using an oven liner made from PTFE with a non-stick coating. This will catch any food drips keeping the bottom of the oven/grill pan clean. Remember to take the oven liner out regularly and wash it in warm soapy water.

3 “Hot pan - cold oil - prevents sticking” Is this mantra really the best way to prevent food from sticking to the pan when sautéing or stir frying.

The idea is that you heat up the pan first then add the cold oil and almost immediately add the food and that will stop it sticking. What you really want is “hot pan, hot oil”. When you add cold oil, it heats up almost instantly when added to the hot pan – giving you “hot pan, hot oil”. You get the same results if you heat the oil along with the pan so take your pick – they both work!

My dictionary defines ‘hobby’ as ‘an activity or interest pursued for leisure or relaxation and not as a main occupation.’

There have been many scientific studies over the years which show that people who participate regularly in hobbies live longer, healthier lives. This beneficial effect seems to be independent of other factors such as general health or how wealthy you are.

However, there’s more to a hobby than belonging.

Hobbies allow us to tap into two qualities which are fundamentally human. The first is our capacity for imagination. Whether we’re creating something beautiful, like a quilt, or painting, or designing a new layout for our train set, or planning a route for a hill-walking weekend, it’s our imagination which is key to the final outcome. The second quality is our need to drive forward or push boundaries.

Whatever our hobby, we’re always striving for improvement: can we obtain that particularly rare stamp; can we climb a higher mountain; can we take a better photograph?

While we’re using our imaginations or pushing ourselves that bit further, our hobby acts as a release valve for the stresses of modern life. It’s difficult to worry about your boss or the household bills while you knit, play guitar or swim.

So where do you start when choosing a hobby?

There is an old saying that everyone ought to have three hobbies: an intellectual one; a physical one and a spiritual one.

Modern life doesn’t leave much time for three hobbies but it’s still a good starting point and some hobbies can combine two or even all three of those desirable attributes. Bird watching, for instance combines intellectual and physical, as you’ll learn about birds and get out and about to find them.

Yoga combines physical and spiritual attributes.

Get creative: make a list of things which interest you and design your hobby to fit your lifestyle. You never know what you might achieve.

During some quiet time during Lock Down last year she finally made the dream a reality.

‘The Adventures of Eco Eddy: Eddy talks to the bee’ was written, illustrated and self-published on Amazon.

It is a story with a message. It is an environmental story to educate children on the plight of the bees as they navigate Climate Change.

Eddy is a 10 year old boy who gets transported into deepest space to meet some friendly aliens. They give him special powers to be able to talk with animals. His mission is to talk to the animals to get their perspective on living with Climate Change.

The book was written from Marie’s experience of being a beekeeper and reflects her love of nature.

It is beautifully illustrated with bold bright pictures that bring the story to life.

Some of the feedback from parents who have brought the book, say that their children have been captivated by the story. One parent said her grandson would only read Eco Eddy as he wanted to know the ending. Of course, the ‘ending’ and the plight of nature is in our hands.

Recalibrate Your Life What will your new normal look like? our lives while at the same time secretly dreading a few things about ‘the return to normal’.

So how can we bring about some permanent positive changes.

Write these two specific questions down and underneath, write your answers.

What did I dislike from my life before the pandemic and haven’t missed?

What do I like from the pandemic times that I will miss when normality fully returns?

Be particularly honest about the first question. Be specific about toxic friendships, and unproductive habits and behaviours.

Make a list of things to leave in the pre-pandemic era.

Be honest, before the pandemic did you ever think, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to start over? If I had a fresh start I’d do things so differently.’?

As we exit the 18-month period during which life’s ordinary patterns paused, it’s a good time to ask, before a more ‘normal’ life kicks back in, what would I like ‘normal’ to look like for me?

My friends and I often talk about pre-pandemic life in a pretty sentimental way. We speak in general terms: we miss visiting family, hanging out, and travelling.

More recently I’ve been trying to work out what specifically my friends and I don’t miss: toxic friendships, endless commutes, arrogant bosses, rude customers, and irritating co-workers came top.

Pre-pandemic life how often did you hang out with that friend who makes you feel bad about yourself?

How often did you avoid conflict at work, even when you knew your boss or co-worker was being unreasonable? How often did you feel ‘guilted’ into attending a family dinner? It’s a human trait to avoid rocking the boat...then COVID came along and rudely capsized everyone’s boats!

I’m not making light of the past year. I lost my grandfather to COVID. It was a truly awful time, and no-one ever wants to return to the huge death counts of last summer. But most of us have been looking forward to a relaxation of the restrictions on 28 | www.localreach.co.uk

Some things you may feel you can’t change, like a commute, a job, or a friendship /relationship. But if you examine them closely you might find you have more control than you think. If the pandemic has been a welcome break from any of the answers you wrote, ask yourself whether you could make that break permanent. What would it take? This might be your best chance.

Make a list of what you want to keep and take forward.

Did you find you liked spending more time at home and discovered a love of gardening or reading? Did you take up running, cooking, painting, or singing?

Think about how about how you might be able to re-engineer your life to include fewer business trips, fewer meetings, and more time for your hobbies, on your own or with friends who actually enrich your life.

I’m not suggesting that you abandon your family and run off to a retreat in the Outer Hebrides or resign from your job and announce you’re a writer, with no thought for how you’ll support yourself. This is an exercise in recalibrating and making a few adjustments to your course through life.

2020 and 2021 have been unrelentingly grim, but human beings are amazingly resilient and most of us have experienced glimpses of ‘happy’ here and there. The trick going forward will be to scrape of the grim while holding on tight to the happy.
